I live in San Diego, CA and
I live in San Diego, CA and I've not found a restaurant here that I think is as good as Local Roots. Incredible flavors, creative and lovely preparations... I always want to lick the plate. I had Sunday dinner there this visit and they offered a more family style dinner menu. I had a spicy bison chili that was out of this world, just melt in your mouth and the spices... yum. I was told there was a bit of dark chocolate and ancho chilies. Whatever the seasoning was, it was delish. I'll be back to this restaurant every trip and I never have eaten the same thing twice.

Amazing Chef's Tasting Menu
We had the 7 course chef's tasting menu with paired wine - had a TREMENDOUS time, three hour dinner and just the most fabulous flavors/textures and all the dishes were just beautiful. We explained we wanted to just have fun with food, open to trying anything and one course was served as a hot rock (350 deg) on a bed of rock salt and herbs (which created a wonderful scent as they got hot) and raw fish we were able to cook ourselves on the rock. Just fun, flavorful and amazing. Couldn't recommend a restaurant more highly.
The chef clearly has as much fun as his customers with this and he is a regional treasure.

Very good restaurant focusing
Very good restaurant focusing on locally sourced ingredients. Shitake rissoto was excellent. Mackerel a bit overcooked. Service very helpful, but orders, including dessert, took a long time to come out of the kitchen.

Great birthday dinner with Mom
We became members of the clean plate club for the evening, every bite (including the fresh herb and flower garnishes) was delicious. Local Roots chefs obviously like to play with food, that makes the food fun and puts a uniqueness and variety on the plate that is well beyond what I could/would prepare in my own kitchen for a single meal. And Erin is great, she has experience in some of Roanoke's best restaurants, the strawberry mojito she prepared with beautiful mint from her own garden was divine.

The food was wonderful and very creative. We had a beet appetizer that was very inspired and just popped with an array of flavors. The fettuccine with consume was so tasty and creative and the pork chop special had a bone in pork the was extremely tender. We would highly recommend this restaurant. It is a gem.

I was here for dinner with two friends and each of us absolutely loved all we ordered. The beet salad was perfect and so beautiful that I had to take a picture. The bread pudding was to die for.

Simple, inventive, Delicious
My fiance and I enjoy Farm to Table dining. Local Roots demonstrated excellence at every level. We will be dining regularly for Sunday Brunch.

Overall, I enjoyed my dining
Overall, I enjoyed my dining experience. The dining area is light and airy and the restaurant is located in what appears to be a somewhat ecclectic neighborhood which seems fitting for the farm-to-table concept. The menu is rather limited, so this may not be a restaurant for finnicky eaters, although my finnicky dining companion did enjoy his selections with one exception: we both agreed that tomato sorbet absolutely does not say "dessert". The portions are not large, but what we ordered was superbly cooked, and we didn't leave hungry, it's just that it made it seem slightly overpriced. I would classify the restaurant as one fit for adventurous diners on a special outing.

We were passing through Roanoke and wanted something other than roadside chain restaurant fare. This was a great find, unique, authentic, freindly. Very creative presentations and combinations.

Great Food, Locally Grown
My wife & I had stopped by for brunch previously, first dinner for us. Salad starters were excellent, the arugula salad with apples and soft hen egg was delicious. Main courses, bison and trout, were both outstanding. Server was friendly, very attentive and pointed out all the ingredients in the dishes. We will be back, soon.

Flavors and texture abundant
Arriving early for our reservation we were seated and selected good red wines, malbec & grannacha from a wide ranging list.
The cheese plate at the start was excellent - although the cheeses were not complex - it was the points of contrast on the artfully arranged serving slate that gave us pause. Pickled onions, relish, pickles, horseradish infused chutney, fig jam, nuts, seeds and flatbread. Glorious - much as the fabulous bread pudding dessert - a range of flavors and textures. The roasted heritage chicken
leg was excellent as well - flavors and texture fantastic. The special seafood mix cornmeal fried with citrus was very good.
The entire meal was an inspiring work of flavor and texture pairing and presentation. Bravo!

Ask for the bar menu
The farm trout sounded splendid, as did the chicken breast served with wood-fired shiitakes, but something more hearty seemed in order. The waiter suggested the bar menu, where we found a pub burger drenched in spicy pimento cheese on a Brioche bun with large steak fries. It was cooked to a delightful medium to medium-rare. Quite a find on an autumn Saturday night in Roanoke.

Fabulous Find in Roanoke VA
My sister and I were visiting Roanoke to attend a Virginia Tech football game. We chose a dinner at a restaurant that focused on locally grown food. I found "Local Roots" on Open Table and the reviews were excellent, so I booked it. Local Roots lived up to the wonderful reviews. Our table, right in the window, was ready for us when we got there. We chose a hand-crafted cocktail that was one of the best drinks either of us have had. My drink was the Ginger-craveworthy. The food was delicious and beautifully plated. We both had salads which contained original ingredients that blended together for a lovely first course. Then, I had the duck confit and my sister had the pork ragu. Both were perfectly cooked. I strongly recommend Local Roots!

Even better than before
We've always loved Local Roots. Farm to table really is the way to get the freshest, local ingredients. They are very accomidating to my special food requests (no bones, skinless chicken etc). The menu options have grown recently and the food is always beautifully prepared. The wait staff is top notch, friendly and knowledgeable. So glad to have this gem in my neighborhood.
