Absolutely Outstanding Pasta
Outstanding home made pasta and I mean outstanding - Really special - very casual atmosphere without "fancy decor" . Definitely on the return list .

Since my name is Farina, I had to try this restaurant on our visit to the city. I was thoroughly pleased with the food, wine and service. Great atmosphere and our waitress was wonderful.

I was there one other time and the noise level was insane...said I would never return. Tried again with a 530 reservation and it was only a few customers.

I went for my thirtieth birthday
I went for my thirtieth birthday with a small group of my girlfriends, and we were treated like royalty. Emilio and all of the waitstaff were absolutely wonderful, recommended all of the best dishes, and the food was ridiculously good. I would highly recommend this place--best authentic Italian food I've had in the city.

Amazing pasta and service!
This is one of my favorite places to eat in the Mission! The pasta is amazing and I had the best veal chop ever. The staff are very switched on as far as service and passion for the customer from the front door to the bar.

Steady Local Spot
Cab it. Bad Parking, high valet charges.

Convo & Vino
Sleek interior but not pretentious. Friendly but not pusy wait staff. There is always a busy buzz but the acoustics allow for private conversation. I like the wine list, varied and well matched to food selections. My food was a bit too tepid last night but also enjoyable. I have never been disappointed.

This was an overall fantastic
This was an overall fantastic dining experience. The pesto is amazing, the best we've ever tasted, with delicate freshly made pasta. The focaccia is unique and absolutely delicious. Every dish we had was excellent, and the service was equal to that. Our waitress had a personal touch, with the perfect combination of being friendly and attentive and making excellent recommendations, while also allowing for the feeling of having a private, leisurely meal. We're definitely going back soon!

week night get together
Went here on a Monday evening for dinner with eight people. The food was good and the place is lovely! I'm surprised what the yelp reviews are on this place because we had a great time with no problems with the food at all. The only issue is the service isn't to best comparing to places of similar level. Since I remembered the reviews I made sure to pay more attention when speaking to our server. Otherwise the evening was great!

Delicious in every way!
It was the first time I had gone to Farina after living in SF for 9 years, and finally decided to try it with a friend. IT WAS PHENOMENAL! Our server, James was incredibly attentive and made you feel like you were the only people in the restaurant. Food was outrageously delicious, Wine list proved to be yummy, and the atmosphere was perfect. Would recommend this place while being aware that it is a bit pricy, but worth every single penny!

Great atmosphere and creative food
Farina has very good food and a beautiful restaurant. The service is lacking.

We had an awesome! waitress. I wish I could remember her name.
But I will ask for her every time.

3rd time, a bit deflated
Have been here two other times before, both with fantastic results. This time was a bit of a let down. The food is always good if not excellent but, this time my wife and I both had less than impressive fish dishes. The menu changes often, seasonally if not monthly/weekly so there are bound to be some hits and misses. However, both of our dishes were essentially plain fish with a wilted green and a salty sauce. Meh...the first two times we went were nearly epic: Initially dining here on a gift card from a coworker and being super impressed with the perfectly cooked scallops with speck and pea puree. The second time, entertaining "true Italian" friends on ours from NY to great accolades. This time, just fell a bit flat.

2 appetizers, 2 entres, 1 side, 2 cocktails, 2 glasses of wine for $200. Food was fine but nothing to write home about.

Wonderful food! The pasta was some of the best I have ever eaten.
I loved the deco.

Early dinner in the Mission
I have only praise for the food. I had the soft shell crab, a treat since it is available seasonally. Of course the pesto on the handkerchief pasta is like no other. I know they import ingredients, it shows. We shared a halibut and it was cooked to perfection.

One of my favorite Italian place
The neighborhood is a gem and Farina fits perfectly with it. They may have the best pesto in town. I like their italian wine list (bit expensive but good selection) and the service is very sympathic. Come here if you like italian food and accent ;-)

The home-made pasta makes
The home-made pasta makes all the pasta dishes extraordinary (especially the handkerchief pasta with pesto sauce), but all of the other food was fabulous as well (even the non-Italian dishes like steak). The service is very friendly and highly competent. I have two issues though: (1) the pricing seems unduly high, even by good SF restaurant standards -- we paid over $400 with tip for four people, two of whom had nothing to drink; and (2) the tile floor/walls etc. certainly create the buzz I assume the owners and designers were hoping for but it makes normal conversation pretty darn difficult.

Excellent food, service and ambience. Fabulous pasta...especially the pesto. I was there in a large group and all courses were timed perfect. It was a great meal, I would go back again and again. I felt the portions were decent size. Everyone enjoyed the meal and wine.

Give it another chance!
This is our second time going here - first was about 5 years ago - it has definitely improved. The pasta melts in your mouth and so light. There is a walnut pesto that my husband raved about and the genovese pesto is outrageous. The ravioli with lamb and mint also is a must try. Service was exceptional as well. And there is a roof top terrace that is lovely - i would like to sit there next time (bring a group of 5 or more to do so).

I would go back
I have eaten in China, Japan, Korea, Russia, and places throughoutplanet Earth. I have eaten at Farina and I would go back there

Amazing everything. Cocktails, wine, appetizers, fondue, focaccia, pasta, pesto, fish.

I don't live in San Francisco but I stop in for a meal every time I'm in town. Food and drinks were delicious and the staff was perfectly attentive. This time we couldn't sit on the patio but the front window was a great alternative. The music choice (Bob Marley) seemed out of place considering the look of the restaurant.

Great restaurant, terrific service!
A really great experience overall. The food was exception and the service was amazing. Their award winning pesto with fresh handkerchief pasta is a must. A little noisy so perhaps not a good romantic get away, but perfect for friends and foodies. It was out first time visiting Farina; the owner rewarded our visit with a free home made Pannacotta dessert which was the best I have ever tasted. Can't wait to go back!

Amazing food, Service fair.
This was our 3rd visit to Farina. We enjoyed butter fish, kale, raw carne, and the pheasant/duck ravioletti. Wines recommended by the bartender were perfect and delicious.
While the bartender met our expectations, our server and the hostess seemed distracted and we found ourselves repeating our requests.
As my partner has celiac disease and cannot tolerate gluten, we notified the restaurant the day before our reservation requesting gluten-free pasta. We arrived for our reservation to find Farina had received our request and my additional phone call the day before but the chef had not made gluten-free pasta.
While the food is incredible, be prepared for spotty service and some indifference to special requests.

Overall Great Experience
Took my niece for a graduation dinner and the food and service were exceptional. Well done!!!

The service left a little to be desired, as we waited at least 10 minutes before even being acknowledged by a server, but the food and wine was outstanding.

A Ligurian star
Over the past few years Farina has developed into an outstanding regional Italian restaurant, specializing in the food of Liguria. The establishment is very friendly, the service is great, and the food is outstanding. My own favorite is their handkerchief pasta with pesto, something I haven't found anywhere else, and a delicious "first course" that can easily serve as a main dish.

Best Italian food outside of Italy! Authentic italian. You will see the pride they show in their work. Great place, great service & great food! Go there!

The environment was great. Service was awesome? Food was good, but a bit pricey for such a small serving that they provide.
8/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food was amazing especially the pesto!!! Can't wait to go back. Do wish they had some less expensive wine.
8/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food is very good, thankfully they have valet parking because otherwise you could not park anywhere close. It is kind of expensive, a moderately priced wine was $66. a bottle, expect to pay about $90 to $100. per person.

Perfect Dinner at Farina
Farina served a perfect dinner this past Friday. Salads were fresh; pasta was creative without being contrived. Done perfectly. Do NOT miss the "foccacia calda" -- a warm, unleavened foccaccia with Italian ham and a wonderful creamy cheese. Topped with fresh herbs. Out of this world. Unleavened foccacia = a verysoft, flat-ish bread, remotely like very soft naan. The "dorado" was mild and perfectly done. Duroc pork chop disappeared immediately even though it was a very hefty chop. Side of sauteed spinach was excellent and not overwhelmed by garlic. We tried 3 pasta dishes -- all outstanding. Waitstaff are bright and friendly. Great vibe. It's noisy, so don't attempt to have cozy conversation or conduct 'business.'

A neighborhood standout
Farina is my go-to spot to take out of town guests for an authentic Italian meal that is often beyond the reach of tourists. The service is always wonderful and the food is excellent. Favorites include the pansotti or any pasta dish made with their famous walnut pesto sauce, the focaccia de recco, and the tiramisu. I have noticed that their prices have steadily risen over the past few years, making it more of a special occasion restaurant for me now. Hint: if you dine at Farina often, be sure to sign up for a Ruby Club card on their website.

Pasta was fabulous
Cordial wait staff. Offered champagne for our birthday celebration. Could see pasta being made in the open kitchen. good wine selection. Exceptional Hendricks gin martini with elderberry. Valet parking. Will definitely come back with friends.

Perfect food and service!
We had a group of 6 and they accommodated us right on time for our reservation. Everyone was friendly and the service was top notch! Our Server was amazing And nice, something that is hard to find in this day and age. It was fun and hip without being pretentious. The food was delicious, we ordered a bit of everything and ate family style. The pork chop was cooked perfectly, the shrimp and basil pesto pasta was divine, and the burata prosciutto appetizer was superb. We also had the seafood fritto misto, arugula salad, and more! Perfect dinner for a great group of friends! Highly recommend!

A little Gem
My boyfriend and I have been twice now and each time we just fall in love with the detailed menu and wine list. In addition the staff is very knowledgeable and also friendly. We'll be back again and again.

I often take out of town guests and business colleagues to Farina. The Lagurian food is unique and well executed, and the communal table is great for large groups. Plus, it's neighborhood-y and tourists don't usually find it.

The prices at the restaurant
The prices at the restaurant have gone way up and I do not think that the value is consistent with the price. The food was excellent but it wasn't worth the price.

Outstanding Food; Service Breakdown
Their signature dishes compete well with the best in the City. Service problems: No valet available and no call warning the diner about it. Suggestion to go to their Pizza outlet for a valet was wrong; there was no valet there. Lights on much too bright thereby ruining what is normally a romantic dining experience.
However, our waitress was excellent in responsiveness and in her food and wine suggestions.

This was our second dinner
This was our second dinner at Farina. Like the first dinner, the food is very good but also expensive. We tried the pasta stuffed with guinea hen with a demi glace and it was very good. The tomato salad was fabulous. The duck on orange flavored rice while not typical Italian was also very good. The atmosphere is funky to say the least. (Some chairs are recycled public school desk chairs.)
11/14/2013 4:00:00 PM
dinner for four
We had, Octopus (Soppressata di polipo con finocchi e dadolata di frutta), Prosciutto San Daniele, burrata e focaccina, Focaccia di Recco with tomato sauce, capers and anchovies, Ravioli di ricotta e spinaci con burro e salvia. Excellent! Its pricey for a reason, the quality, preparation and presentation delight the senses. Our waiter was charming and attentive but not intrusive.

The pasta was so fresh and the sauce was perfectly done. I had the curry butterfish and I swear it just melted in my mouth. A little pricey but definitely worth it!!

New Yorkie Italian spot in sf
Been there twice and similar experience. Very good service and great help translating the Italian wine list to my California wine knowledge. Serious old school Italian food.
