Organic with gluten gree options!
We went to Toast for a special dinner and our experience was excellent! The only downside, if you are looking for a romantic time, is that it was pretty loud (we were there at 7:30 on a Tuesday) and most of the tables are pretty close together. If you would like some more privacy, request a table against the wall.
But the food, drinks and service were all top notch. The food is mostly organic and all from scratch, and you can feel it! After a full meal of drinks, apps, entrees and dessert, we felt amazing and not bloated ;) And our server was attentive and always there when we needed her but not hovering at all.
Overall, highly recommended! And oh, I almost forgot, they offer Mariposa gluten free bread for their sandwiches - YUM!

Great neighborhood wine bar
Fantastic place in all respects...except for noise!
The noise level is very difficult...when crowded, its impossible to talk to your friends!!

Food and service were excellent.
Food and service were excellent. Our only suggestion for improvement would be to work on the acoustics - on a busy night it is really hard to hear each other. Maybe put some sort of sound absorbers in the ceiling.

go for the food
I have visited Toast twice recently, and both times I was wowed by the food and the personable staff. Roast chicken and meatballs have been elevated to a superb level here. The yellowtail crudo with rhubarb and mint was both adventurous and unpretentious. Our servers were relaxed and real. The wine menu offers tastes as well as wines by the glass, to suit every need and every occasion. I hope Toast is around for a long time -- this lively restaurant is a wonderful addition to the Rockridge scene!

Great spot to meet with friends
Have been several times and each time have been impressed with the quality of the food. I appreciated that when our inside table was not quite ready on time that we were offered the option of either waiting a few minutes or sitting in the table being held for us outside. It's very noisy inside, so I do recommend sitting outside.

Fun at Toast
The food at Toast was exceptional, and I appreciated the ambience. The wine and cocktail list was very good, and our server was very knowledgeable about all the wines and helped our party make a fine selection. The only problem was the kitchen forgot one of the meals for our table, so one guest had to watch the rest of us eat while they made her food. The server explained they just moved to a new kitchen and they were working out the kinks. She bent over backwards to accommodate us for the error, and I am going to assume this will not be a regular mistake. When the food finally arrived, my friend proclaimed it was worth the wait and was very delicious.

Toast: Great Food, Great Fun
The revamped Toast is really fun. We have eaten their twice in the past week. The tapas style plates filled with fresh fish, pork, outstanding meatball, tasty salads, unbelievably great almonds, and world-class desserts are all excellent. This place is a delight and is one that we'll keep coming back to...
5/23/2013 4:00:00 PM
I had lunch there with a friend and it was wonderful. Leila was our server and she had a great attitude and was there when we needed something without being pushy or intrusive. The food was excellent (pork meatball sandwich) and the cookies at the end were a perfect finish! I highly recommend this restaurant and will go there again soon!

food was delicious - lentil soup and salad. We sat outside and service was superb - even gave us blankets for our laps !

Delicious and Fresh
Enjoyed my meal here, which was all salads. Everything was very fresh and well orchestrated. The hibiscus, lime drink was amazing.
5/30/2013 4:00:00 PM
Toast has a pretty small menu, but my dish (braised pork shoulder) was quite tasty. My friend's pasta looked quite plain, but she liked it. Dessert (Boca Negra) was delicious, but I wish they had an espresso machine. However, I will definitely go back. The service was very good.
6/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
The noise level inside was high so we sat on the patio which was far more pleasant. We were there for lunch and both the food and service were very good. I had hot tea which came in an open pot (i.e., no lid), so the tea became cool very quickly. I suggested to our server that they heat up the pots before brewing the tea and to use pots with lids. The server agreed and we talked about using tea cozies, which would add an interesting touch!
My lunch partner decided that her lunch was so delicious that she and her husband would go back there for dinner the following evening.

One of our favorites!
We have been to this restaurant several times--one of our favorites! Wait staff are all friendly and welcoming, food is consistently good, and wine list is fun and tasty!

when in Rockridge
We live in the East Bay, but rarely get to Rockridge. However, Toast will bring us back. Very friendly staff, great food (although small menu, likely changes frequently). Fab ambience, with large windows throughout and twinkly lights. Only sour note was the tables in the dining room, which are very crowded. We were there for a date night and decided to eat at the bar instead.
6/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
As sometimes happens, when one arrives to a restaurant with an Open Table reservation, the restaurant has no record of it. This occurred to our party of 6 with small dog wanting to celebrate Fathers Day. The manager arranged to move already seated guests to another table, and we were seated quickly and she sent us a round of drinks. Impressively handled!

A College Avenue Gem
We shared 9 dishes among four people including some starters a salad and 2 desserts. Each dish was delicious. The desserts were especially wonderful, not too sweet, in fact the olive oil cake is more savory than sweet and we all 4 loved it.

Love this place!
My fourth time here, and will be back! Such a great neighborhood spot with a great urban ambiance!
6/17/2013 4:00:00 PM
Good place, despite the noise
This is a great restaurant with excellent food and service. My only concern was the noise level. My friend couldn't hear anything I was saying to him, even sittin directly opposite me. If you can sit outside, that's definitely better than inside. Wines are excellent even if a little pricey.
6/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
I visited this restaurant with my girlfriends a year ago and the food was so bad, that we decided not to go again. This past weekend my husband booked a table and didn't tell me about it so when we got there I told him that it was so bad but he insisted to give it a try. I was so impressed to taste this new delicious menu. I was pleasantly surprised!
6/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
Thoughtful, interesting menu
From the eponymous toast-based appetizers to the entrees, the menu features a good variety of well-prepared dishes. Those in our group appaulded the buratta but panned the squid.

We were pleasantly surprised
We were pleasantly surprised at how good the food was. Service and atmosphere were great also.

Fab food - too noisy
We have had many brunches at Toast since it opened and were looking forward to trying dinner. Four of us were in our party and we chose to eat inside the new dining room. Although it is attractive and the booths are comfortable the noise level was really distracting. We love the hanging lights and the vaulted ceiling. What is needed is dampening product on the ceiling and the ambiance will be maintained with a lessening of noise level. Next time we will eat outside where it is peaceful! Loved sharing the small and large plates. Each dish was prepared beautifully (chicken, broccoli, meatballs, pork, salad) and the service pleasant and efficient.

My friend and I enjoyed our
My friend and I enjoyed our lunch. We ordered the cheese plate and a salad each. It needed more crackers and there weren't great choices of iced teas but the salad was delicious. I don't know if I'd go there for dinner. The wine list wasn't very impressive.

We had a great meal and delightful
We had a great meal and delightful dining experience at Toast last night!! Too often we had past this restaurant on Collage Avenue going somewhere else for dinner. This was our first time dining, and will definitely be back soon. The service was attentive friendly and engaging. The food was great, and attractively presented. I had the salmon with grill corn and small tasty tomatoes! Everything was unusually favorful. Finally, the dark chocolate flour less cake is to die for; we agree to come back just for desert!! Paul

Went with 5 adults and one 3.5 year old and everybody had a great time. Delicious food, mostly tapas-style. Plenty of kid-friendly food (unless your kid is the type that only eats chicken fingers and french fries). The kid with us loved munching on the meatballs, fried green beans, roasted chicken, bread, and of course the flour-less chocolate cake. The adults loved all of that as well, in addition to several other plates.
The atmosphere is energetic, but in a happy and calm way...hip people and foodies out with friends, families, etc. The patio is a great spot and they have blankets you can use if you get a chill.
The bar serves up some fantastic cocktails and the wines and beers are all solid picks at reasonable prices.
We'll be back.

I TOAST them
Outstanding experience. The menu was thoughtful and creative. We gad three different entrees and all were memorable. Our server was the best I have had in a year. Could not have been happier.
8/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great setting, limited menu
Toast is one of my favorites in the Rockridge area- nice bar, outdoor seating, and a new large dining room. I do find their menu somewhat limited, and it doesn't change that much. Even with that said - it is still where I take people from out of town because of the good atmosphere and service.
8/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
We had a charming waitress Jana, who made the evening memorable. It was a rehersal dinner for the two of us, and the staff could not have been more pleasant and enthusiastic. We felt as though we should invite them to the wedding before the evening was over. The manager-sommelier was also very warm and welcoming, and knew his wines furthermore. We enjoyed the food as well, it was immaginative and flavorful. Definitely worth another visit.
8/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food but TOO NOISY!
Love the menu and the restaurant is a great addition to the neighborhood. But the noise level is really a problem. Prepare to shout.
9/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
Very good vegetarian-friendly fare
We enjoyed both the food and the wine and beer, and were very impressed by the # of vegetarian options

Fun place to eat
TOAST is a great combo bar and restaurant. The appetizers are priced so low we ordered them all. Don't miss the chickpeas. Our group of four ordered most things on this sparse menu. Everything was prepared well. Don't miss the chicken. As the evening progressed the whole service team caught our laid back party mood and a large portion of the staff were "toasting" drinks with us. Treat your servers nicely and you will be rewarded. Not a place for smugness. Go and expect to have some fun.

Great neighborhood place to dine!
Good food, good service, nice ambiance. Pleasant for eating outside on a warm day. An Oakland asset!

Delightful outdoor setting on patio. Food was exceptional

Strong menu, hurried service
Loved the food despite the short menu. The vibe here is really good, fun young energy, the kind of place the 30 something foodies go to as well. The service was a little too eager, too hurried, a bit of a buzz kill. And unintentionally so, we thought, because there were a lot of open tables that night. On two occassions the back of the house help tried to remove plates that still had food on them, and despite her sunny personality, the waitress never asked if we wanted refills of wine. However, all in all a very good dining experience and we would come back again. We didn't feel the restaurant should be punished for an off day on the service side.

Awesome as always! Toast to you
TOAST - thanks so much for the nice touch on the special note wishing us happy Virgo birthdays when we arrived. Your cocktails rocked! Especially the Indian Summer. Yum. A very happy birthday had by all. Toast to you.

Terrific evening inside and out.

Second visit lived up to first
This is an outstanding East Bay eatery. The menu is not extensive, however the execution of the dishes far exceeds expectations. The wait staff is friendly, competent and knowledgeable. Good wine choices. They even have Fernet Branca! (Not that you need it).
10/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food and a bit loud...
The menu was great for our group of 5 and I really appreciated our waiter offering our 9 year old mac & cheese. It was a bit small so she ended up eating half my salmon which was amazingly good - she would have been happy eating off the real menu but it was nice to offer it.
I also had the soup which was fabulous and got to try a meatball my son ordered - very very good.
The only downside is that the restaurant is just too loud. Unless you yell, its too hard for a group of 5 or 6 to really talk with each other. This is not true if you sit outside (the heaters and blankets are nice) and the bar seems fine if you are there early for wine and snacks. Dear Toast, please add something soft to soak up the noise!

Toast for Oakland food scene
Our first time to Toast, everyone order something different and all claimed them to be very, very good. I liked the subtle flavor combinations that melded together perfectly - no overpowering flavors that prevented the basic ingredients from being appreciated. The only thing we thought could be better was that the portions for the entrées could be a little larger. None of us are 'heavy or big eaters and we were left thinking that the serving sizes didn't really satisfy.j

Welcome to the neighborhood
Very pleasant new corner spot with indoor/outdoor seating to replace a chain restaurant is a welcome addition in Rockridge. Thoughtfu, tasty creative menu delivers flavor without over-reaching. Great brunch spot. Friendly & skilled staff. I'll be back with friends soon.
11/16/2013 4:00:00 PM
Delicious Food - Reasonable Prices
The menu is small, but has good variety. We liked everything we had: chicken liver pate, pickled seasonal veggies, red lentil soup, salmon rillettes, warm kale with avocado, and house-made bacon sausage with toasted veggies. The kale was especially delicious with fresh olive oil and sprinkled with white and black sesame seeds. The desserts were very good too, though not unique. The salmon rillettes were a little too oily for my taste, but had good flavor and paired well with grilled Levain, apple slices, and dill. My Chardonnay was served way too cold.

Good for celebrating an occasion, in this case a birthday.

Leisurely brunch spot
Four of us came for brunch and sat outside since the weather was beautiful. We ended up spending most of Sunday afternoon there, drinking excellent Bloody Marys and beer and noshing on the white bean spread (to die for), sandwiches, French toast and egg dishes. Unusual and delicious dishes prepared with fresh ingredients, although a little pricey. If you are hungry, you are going to drop a lot of money. Even so, it was perfect for what we wanted-a place to catch up with friends and have something to eat and drink. at a leisurely pace. I'll be back.
11/23/2013 4:00:00 PM
What a drink!
The night we tried Toast for dinner was freezing cold. I told the waiter it was Manhattan weather, but wondered if any of their specialty cocktails would fill the bill--nothing sweet. He brought me a Bella Spezia, and I'm in love. No cherry, big orange peel instead. Fabulous drink. We shared three plates: one salad, one small plate, and one main course, plus pumpkin bread pudding for dessert. It was a great meal.
After 7, the places fills up with thirty-somethings, often in tables of four or more.
12/4/2013 4:00:00 PM
Just all around great.
Great food, service, and the new diningroom is very nicely appointed. The lights hanging from the ceiling are beautiful. There were 4 of us at dinner and everybody loved each course and the service was impecable.
