Great Food & Service
The food and service are great. Best to dine early, however, because it can get noisy.

This is a real find!
What an amazing surprise to find the neighborhood gem in the Castro district. The menu is creative and food delicious! Plates vary in size to share, which I highly recommend. The more you explore the more amazed you will be! This restaurant is now an Open Table favorite on my phone.

It's been found
Reservations are highly recommended, especially near the weekend. The menu changes subtly according to season, but we have never had a mediocre dish. Here's a place where you can try everything. (Plenty of vegetarian options.) The wines are carefully chosen and reasonably priced. Try the unfamiliar Spanish selections.

Warm and Friendly
Canela has a warm and friendly staff who are great at making reccommendations from not olny the menu but the wine list as well. The food is outstanding with plates designed to share and larger plates for those who want to hoard the yumminess. There is a wide variety including salads, soups, fish and meats so it can accomodate omnivors and carnivours. Don't miss the flatbread or the croquettas.

Kudos to Mat and Paco with this gem in the Castro neighborhood (on Market Street). The food is always so tasty, and Mat is always introducing new items as well as being attune to seasonal produce etc that he incorporates into dishes. All the staff are sooo friendly, they feel like family.
Highly recommend Canela!

After discovering Canela six months ago I have had a number of delicious meals at this great Spanish gem. I really like that most dishes can be order in tapas and entree sizes, which give you a lot of choices of sharing or devouring a dish alone. Their flatbreads are divine. I love trying a new Spanish wine each time I visit, and I have loved them all.
The restaurant already has a very inviting atmosphere, but they are upgrading the interior a bit in coming months. Can't wait to see it even better.

Charming tapas bistro
Wonderful selection of tapas, colorful and attractive decor and friendly, capable service.

Love it at Canela!
Great Spanish tapas, lots of items to try, plus co owner and chef, Mat, introduces new specials all the time, plus keeps his menu seasonal. Great staff and great location on Market St. We love coming here. Cheers!

Really nice surprise. Our
Really nice surprise. Our dinner was delicious! The Gambas (garlic shrimp) was made with some unusual (to me) spices and came with a couple of pieces of bread to soak up the mouthwatering broth it rested in. The Flatbread was nice and thin but had a crispness underneath the cheese and toppings. The salad was wonderfully fresh and light with a well-seasoned vinaigrette. Also had the Lamb Riblets, and debated between that and the lamb kabobs (tapas), and it was good. The meat was very tender and nicely-flavored, fell off the bones.
I don't typically like to go to someplace 2x, but I would come back to Canela and try the Spanish Tortilla and the Croquettes and probably a different Flatbread.

5 STARS ALL AROUND!!!
Reggie the Manager was super friendly. He sat us in a great spot. The waitress who served us was extremely helpful and bubbly.
The ambience was pretty and the overall experience was great!!! Food was absolutely delicious without a doubt.
We will definitely be dining there again.

The Canela Experience
I have dined here several times. Food is consistently excellent. The setting is splendid. The only criticism is the noise level--unless you dine early, it is difficult to have a conversation without making yourself hoarse.

Great place for dinner not brunch
I have been here several times for dinner and have no complaints regarding the food or service. I brought a group of friends for Sunday brunch, and while the food and service were still good, I found that the menu options were kind of pricey for brunch, especially considering the competition.

Really great food a bit disjointed
Really great food a bit disjointed service during busy time - my guess in not enough ipads to take order on.

I have taken friends to Canela multiple times, and everyone has fallen in love with the place. Great Spanish food and wines, plus an inviting atmosphere makes the place a winner.

As marked above, the restaurant was a great find. Superior is all aspects especially the tasteful decor. An excellent ambience, talented designer, so hard to light a restaurant properly. Congratulations!

Have been to a number of the SF tapas restaraunts, however have not found one better than Canela's.

Just eat here!
A friend and I have dinner together once a month and we love tapas joints. Canela was one of the best! The food - flatbread with snap peas, arugula and gorgonzola was too good, the jamon croquetas, the delicious wine, an olive oil flight (a delicious first for me), the fun and friendly atmosphere, would have been sufficient. But do not leave without trying the fluffy wonders called churros with the chocolate dipping sauce! I had the cinnamon syrup coffe, so didn't really need the dipping sauce. But don't expect the chewy churros you've had from street vendors or the ones at a Giant's game. These churros are like hot and light, cinnamon-flavored clouds...All in all, just prepare yourself for one of the best meals you foodies have ever had!

Lives up to the first bite
I sampled the watermelon gazpacho from Canela at SF Chefs Brunch event. It intrigued me enough to try out the restaurant itself a week later. Canela did not disappoint. Seasonal tapas - love those padron peppers while they're in season! - in addition to welcoming and helpful waitstaff that guided us through the mussels, sofrito, more gazpacho, and even dessert. Just when you think you might be full, somehow we found room...and thank goodness we did! The churros are not to be missed. Far, far away from stadium-fare, these delectable cinnamon-sugar goodies transported me back to Madrid.

On my best list
Possibly the best place to eat in the Castro.
Everything we had was great. Good services, good atmosphere.
I highly recommend it.

Great for Groups
Went to Canela Bistro before a comedy show at the Castro Theater, which is walking distance. The ambiance is warm and inviting and the staff are wonderful! As a party of four the menu offered something for everyone's tastes and we ended up splitting 6 dishes at our server's recommendation. The large portions are perfect for sharing between 3-4 ppl and they also offer individual portions for the picky set. Highly recommend their house sangria (we had the red) which you can order by the glass, 1/2 liter or liter. The Spanish olive oil flight, gazpacho, chorizo flatbread & ham croquettes were standouts and shouldn't be missed. At $50/person (tip included) for 3 salads, 6 large plates, a liter of sangria & 4 beers the price is very fair for SF!
8/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
This was our third visit to Canela in the past year and the food on each visit has surpassed the previous. The tapas are as good and often better than any we have experienced on our twice a year visits to Spain. This place is great!
8/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
a gem of a place for tapas
I have been to Canela three times now and for me that's unusual because I like to check out new places. I'm not a foodie so you'll have to trust me that the food is fabulous. Also, the service is outstanding; owner sits and chats about spain and spanish food. My companion knows about spanish food culture and she said that Canela has tapas from all different parts of spain. Highly recommended.

Getting better and better
I have been to Canela now a number of times, and it keeps getting better and better. The first time I had diner there was last December. Since then the interior has transformed little by little to an elegant but approachable ambience. Love the Moorish screens in the windows and chocolate brown!
Great ambiance aside, the wait staff is always welcoming and the food never disappoints. I am addicted to the flat bread, Moroccan spiced skewers, gambas and the Crema Catalana. They also have a great Spanish wine list with selections you cannot find elsewhere.
8/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
I lived for years in Spain and miss the food so much, so I was very curious and excited to see how Canela would satisfy my everlasting craving for Spanish cuisine... and it totally did! We absolutely loved it. The gazpacho was perfect, as were the rest of our selections... pimientos de piquillo, patatas bravas, gambas... And the wine selection was fabulous. Great ambience, great service, and a great value. I'll definitely be going back!
8/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
This was our second time to Canela. We enjoyed both experiences thoroughly. We will definitely go back. If you like mussels, you have to try the Mejillones con Cava which are Mussels Cooked with Cava, Tomato and Chorizo. Awesome! We also had a tapas dish with steak that melted in my mouth. The atmosphere is sultry, service great, and overall, a wonderful dining experience. Wine was yummy too.

Definitely for special occasions
We had a marvelous time for our friend's birthday. The service and atmosphere was wonderful. The food was amazing, interesting, different and delicious.
The price was a bit over the top, but the experience was amazing. Please order as you go. The server will probably advise ordering two to three plates per person. We found this to be way too much and were quite satisfied with 7 tapas and 2 Racion, which was plenty for five people.
So for a special occasion, paying about $65-$70 per person, this is a wonderful experience.

A place you will want to return to
Paco and Matt have a winning product at Canela Bistro. The food, service and ambiance are high quality and flawlessly consistent. The gambas are a must!!!

Spanish-Fusion in the Castro
The menu combined traditional Spanish influences with new American flair. Potential diners might think tapas constitute lighter fare, but it entirely depends on which and how many you order. At one end of the spectrum, Canela presents a great option for drinks and a few quick bites. On the other, this restaurant could be a great location for a small feast. If you decide on just tapas, I recommend the Patatas Bravas in particular. The chef added a garlic aioli to the traditional tomato and pepper sauce. For me, this dish represented the greater scope of the restaurant and the menu. Innovative and thoughtful experimentation with traditional Spanish recipes.

Delicious food, fun atmosphere
We had a great time here for a girls' night out/baby shower celebration. The food was great, service excellent, and atmosphere fun! We will all definitely be back.

Spanish on Market
I love this restaurant. Especially their flat bread pizzas, yummy. A nice combo of entrees and tapas. Adequate wine list and quite an extensive menu.

Options options options
Great Spanish food and wine. Terrific tapas variety and lovely desserts.
Took our son and his partner there (5 blocks from their house) and they said they'd never noticed the place because they always walk on the other side of the street!
(A lesson there about the trouble with patterns?)
They loved the place and we did, too.
Our server, Melody, was very helpful and very attentive.
We worried about finding a parking space, but no problem: a small attendant-managed lot is a few doors down. (It's a funeral home parking lot that opens up to non-funeral parking at night. A $10 bargain.)

While the menue extensive, the tapas were some of the best I have had. I cannot recommend any specific one, all I had were fabulous. Wine selection was extensive with some wonderful Spanish Reds. Service was five star, silverware and plates changed for each serving. GREAT place, ambiance was fantastic.

Excellent Tapas in San FRancisco
Tried Canela Bistro Bar for the first time after hearing a good review on "Check Please Bay Area". The tapas are really excellent, and the service very helpful in making choices. Had an excellent wine as well. I highly recommend this restaurant as a real dining treat.

I love this restaurant so much! Ever changing menu of tapas and great Spanish wine list
10/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
We got there before the doors opened and they were nice enough to let us and a few other folks that arrived early stand inside when it was windy and a bit chilly outside... very hospitable, excellent customer service and the food..... I could just go on-and-on-and-on...... about how fantastic "EVERYTHING" we tried meet or exceeded our expectations. The staff was very helpful, and you could tell they really enjoyed their jobs because it showed in the outstanding customer service we received throughout the dinner. Parking wasn't that difficult, although we did get there at about 5:20pm on a Saturday.
10/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
This new hot spot is an amazing find! The ambiance was classy and hip; relaxing and fun - all at the same time. The staff were very knowledgable and gave great suggestions. The small plates were just the right size and the best tapas I've had in a very long time. It's crowded and hip but you don't have to shout at each other to be heard like so many hip spots. The clientele were eclectic. Dress is classy/casual.

Castro neighborhood gem Canela
Canela is a wonderful restaurant to share tapas (small plate) and raciones (larger entrees). Elegant, yet casual, atmosphere, but can be quite loud. Service is good, the food better.
For our anniversary dinner, my man and I enjoyed succulent venison steak salad; a smoky trout salad; autumnal pear / blue cheese / arugula coca (thin, crispy flatbread); tender cauliflower and crispy jamon serrano; and wild boar stuffed piquillo peppers. Everything was so delicious! We had a minerally white wine and left no room for dessert.
Go now, and enjoy!

Like a Trip to Barcelona
What a find! Canela is one of the best Spanish/Catalan restaurants in the county. Excellent tapas and main courses that are authentically prepared. The atmosphere is pure Barcelona. A very nice wine list as well. If you've been looking not just for something called "tapas," but for the authentic tapas experience, I can't recommend this highly enough.

Take Time to Enjoy
I really enjoyed my experience at Canela. Our server Daniel, was so nice and friendly, and was very happy to make us happy. The food was amazing, but what I really enjoyed was that it felt like we stepped out of time, and got to enjoy our meal, without looking at our watches, and my family and I, even had somewhere to be afterwards. It felt like dining as it should be, slow and intentional. Would love to go back. The Cafe Canela was incredible, and a delicious treat.
10/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
I've been to Canela many times and it's always great. I love the new look of the place -- a bit more fancy but still very comfortable and welcoming.
10/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
A pleasant Surprise
A friend recommended this place and so we went for it. I didn't even checkout the menu before going. But we were greeted with a smile and quickly taken to our table. The service was attentive but not overly done, which was nice. Every item we ordered on the menu was very very tasty (the cauliflower was the least tasty dish but still good). I'd definitely go back to try more!

Tasty Tapas in the Triangle
We've been to Canela's 5 or 6 times now and always have a great meal there. The staff is friendly, great sangria and the fish special is consistently awesome. I like that you can go the tapas or the entree route.
11/1/2013 5:00:00 PM
Tapas dinner with 5 adults was great. Service is amazing -- they time the tapas deliveries perfectly (hard work for waitstaff) and pay attention. Everything was delicious. Having lived in Spain as a poor college kid, any chance to eat like the other half is one I'll especially enjoy. Loved the cold cucumber gazpacho, boar stuffed peppers, and of course classic tortilla.

Can't wait to go back
It was our first time at Canela and it was a fantastic experience. Every dish I had was great and my companions were happy too.

Great tapas restaurant
I loved the food, we just had to ask them to bring all the plates at once. Otherwise, they were bringing them one at a time, and we wanted to share the different plates. The food was delicious.
11/7/2013 4:00:00 PM
I have dined several times closer to when it first opened, and decided to return this year. The recent renovation was very appealing to the eye. The warmth that exudes with the interior makes for a comfortable experience.
The service was spot-on in terms of the right amount of checking back on the table.
The food was perfect. We were able to have the last brussel sprouts appetizer which was delicious, along with the flat breads, and the meatballs. The clear stand out was the recommended cod fish and the gambas. The desserts were also good as well.
I won't wait that long to return back.

Good Spanish Food
My favorite La Brea bread is now darker and not pure white. The restaurant has been redecorated and now is much more elegant. The previous decor was nice and now a lot more cozy. The panels next to the door to keep the draft out is a nice addition.
The food is still good. My favorites, the shrimp gambas is still good. They are served in a wonderful sauce of paprika and other spices. The bread is used to sop of the delicious sauce. The croquetas have not lost their attraction, deep fried balls of a creamy cheese with bits of ham. The Spanish wine list is nice.
Guests are always treated with the greatest friendliness.
