Pastaio is consistently good.
Pastaio is consistently good. We love the slower service. It gives you time to enjoy your dinner and to also relax a little before the next course.

Great little place for a great meal. The pasta dishes and seafood dish special were fabulous. The sea bass over rice was great and their meatball and lazana dish was superb. It is BYO so you save money that way. Gelato selction was huge and very unique. Well worth a try and you will not be disappointed!

My husband, mother-in-law,
My husband, mother-in-law, toddler-aged daughter and I went to Pastaio for dinner Saturday night in honor of Jersey Shore Restaurant Week. Our server, Jennifer, was a delight and incredibly helpful walking us through the menu and giving us history on the restaurant itself and the chef and trained pastaio (which means "pasta-maker" in Italian).
The pasta was light and delicious, the dishes were simple and allowed the outstanding quality of ingredients to show. We intend to return again. Mangia!

This is truly a unique dinning experience. All the food is fresh and made to order including the pasta. I felt like I was back in Italy. A must go to !!!!

My wife and I visited this gem on Friday May 3rd. We were escorted to our requested table and prompty greeted by the owner's husband who welcomed us and thanked us for visiting. Although there were no specials that evening, this weekly changing menu never ceases to satisfy our palate's. My wife had the gnochi as a main dish - served in a light creme sauce - to die for ! Just as good as Italy !
I had the pink ribbon dish - light home made pasta served with a sweet but tangy crumbled sausage. Never tasted anything so good !
We appreciate it being a BYOB - there is a package store 1/2 block up 3rd Avenue.
Prepare to be WOWWED at this hidden gem
If homemade pasta

One of my favorite spots
Every week the menu changes. The food is always great and the new items on the menu are always outstanding. It is always interesting to trynew and different dishes.
The staple of the menu are the meatballs which are the best you will eat anywhere.
5/3/2013 4:00:00 PM
The burrata appetizer - homemade
The burrata appetizer - homemade - is creamy with a luscious milky aroma and comes with a side of prosciutto, mostarda, crusty bread and green olives. This can be a meal itself if you're not very hungry. But that would be a mistake because then you would miss the fabulous fresh pasta dishes and the meatballs. The gnocchi here do not taste like starched cannonballs; they are soft little pillows of ricotta and dough in a creamy mushroom sauce. Pastaio is a BYO with a small but tastefullly stocked wine store up the block. And the menu will force you to come back to try all of the dishes you've missed.

My husband and I love this restaurant. The food is excellent and very different from other Italian restaurants. It is a gem in Spring Lake NJ.

Spring Lake's finest restaurant
The food is outstanding. The owner goes out of his way to make you feel welcome.

A Rare Find:Must Try
Had a very interesting meal to say the least. This was my first time at this restaurant. After waiting 45-50 minutes for our appetizers all I can say is a good thing for great company, wine, and conversation. The Stuffed Zucchini Flower was incredible stuffed with a clearly homemade herb Ricotta then fried was surprisingly light and refreshing.Topped with a caper sauce that was light and slightly salting what a great compliment. The other appetizers were the Burrata Cheese that was salty creamy and smooth.Served with olives and figs do not pass up trying this dish. The last appetizer was seasonal salad that was a mix a local greens (tasted like they were just picked) tossed with a micro herb salad with a homemade vinaigrette.Entrees great!

Perfect if you're not in a rush...
We had read reviews that the service wasn't that terrific and the wait was long, but when we go out we like our meal spread out so we took the plunge. We were very happy. Our appetizer (a very good traditional meatball serviced with romano cheese and crostini) came out early enough on our arrival that we were satisfied until our entrees come. We sipped our wine, enjoyed each others company, and appreciated the fact that we were going to be enjoying pasta made to order. Our entrees were wonderful. We actually had enough to enjoy the leftovers for lunch the next days. The portions aren't ridiculous, but they are ample. Our servicer were pleasant and we never felt neglected. We liked everything about this place.

Service is terrible, food is great
Service was terrible, but they are trying. The food is super expensive, but I guess it is Spring Lake. I had an unbelieveable pork belly that was out of this world.
Also love the fact that they change the menu once a week. Definitely would go back... After I get paid :)

A wonderful gem
The service was a bit off tonight but it is a great place and superb food.
I really enjoy myself every time I go.

Not too many options on the menu but each dish sounded delicious. I had the meatballs and it was excellent but the pomodoro sauce didn't have too much flavor

I went to Pastaio with work colleagues and I definitely will make a return visit! It is a quaint, understated BYOB restaurant in down town Spring Lake. The waiter says the menu changes weekly, but they keep a few signature dishes on all the time. All pasta is HOMEMADE and the MEATBALLS were seriously the BEST I have had in my life ( including homemade)! We shared multiple apps, one was better than the other ( the crostini was my favorite ). And the dessert of the day was delicious.....a chocolate torte that was decadent. I feel price is fair, portion size more than adequate , however service unimpressive. We had to ask multiple times for water refills and waited awhile for the check

We went for lunch on a rainy day so it was as quiet as a church. I wanted to take my friend to lunch for her birthday. This was her first time to Pastaio, even though she's lived in the area for a while. Some would say she is a major food-snob, others would say she has very high standards. I wondered if she would find something she liked. Not only did she, but she was pleasantly surprised to find that one dish after the other equaled those she's had in Rome, her personal standard. She intends to return for dinner.
Thank you Pastaio.

consistently great experience
The menu changers weekly and all the dishes are outstanding . Brian is so passionate about his resturant and it shows in every detail about this restaurant.

We love this place! Service was great..service friendly..owner/host is very accommodating and knows the food his wife prepares to a tee! Answers any questions you may have about the food and are willing to change up the menu to your liking :-) All the pastas are made fresh to order and sauces are superb! We have been here three times and look forward to returning again soon! LOVE the music!!
8/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Portions inconsistent, food tasty. "Sunday gravy" entree overwhelmed w/short rib meat, meatball size of baseball, & just a handful of pasta. Gnocchi portion very small in comparison. Water on table served warm, no ice. Service inconsistent: some waitstaff knowledgeable, others had no clue. Music (dance music rather than background) was too loud, had to be turned down so conversation could be heard at a normal level. Check is paid with iPad & no explanation of usage;can be confusing, challenging for someone who has never done it before. Staff kept accidentally turning off lights. Still busy restaurant. Dining out shouldn't be work: pay to be served & fed well. Guess not everyone has high standards. What's happening?
8/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
I was actually not sure if we should eat here or not based on the prior reviews but I am glad we did. The service was very efficient. The food was excellent. The blueberry crumble for dessert was 5 stars, be sure to ask what the special dessert is because they do not tell you. Some small things could use improvement..... Making sure the guests have a fork for the dessert and serving cream and sugar with coffee. Overall we will definitely return next time we are in Spring Lake.

Glad I went
The reviews don't paint the real picture. I'm sure there are problems when busy but the food is worth the wait.

Spring Lake Sparkles.
This is a quiet, enjoyable spot in town that serves great food. Bring your own wine is the policy. The service is attentive, not rushed and we shall return.

Great food, great service
I had the stuffed zucchini flowers and they were excellent. I also ordered the filet mignon and that too was fantastic, I highly recommend this BYOB restaurant. I also didn't feel rushed, we wanted to relax. The waitress asked us if it was ok to prepare our entrees, she sensed we wanted to take our time, which I really appreciated. We will definitely come back.

Dined with another couple. Everything was superb, from the appetizers to the dessert. Very attentive service. Great value.

Would highly recommend this restaurant. It has a changing menu based on what is fresh and in season. BYOB which provides you the opportunity to enjoy your favorite wine. It was well staffed receiving prompt attentive service.
My husband had the chef's specialty, which was meat balls and homemade pasta.I sampled his dinner and they were the most delicious meatballs I ever ate. I had the swordfish and it was impeccably prepared.
It was served over spaghetti squash and potatoes. The flavor was scrumptious. We had gelato for dessert. There were many, many flavors and actually the best I have ever tasted.

I enjoyed dining at Pastaio.
I enjoyed dining at Pastaio. Perfect place for a "girls dinner out." The food was delicious and 3 of us ordered the Gnocchi dish and loved it! The atmosphere was calm, quiet and very relaxing. Its a BYOB so we brought our favorite wine. Service was excellent and timed very well. Would highly recommend this restaurant. Perfect for date night, or just a night out with friends. Will definitely be going back to try more of their signature pasta dishes.

We were definitely blown away by the outstanding food at Pastaio, an unassuming storefront restaurant in Spring Lake. The staff couldn't have been any more attentive or helpful. My husband's clam stew appetizer was delicious and more like an entree. The homemade pasta melts in your mouth. We had the cheese ravioli, which were incredible, and the meatball was like nothing I've ever tasted. The chocolate marquis dessert was also fabulous. Bravo, bravo!!

This is an absolute favorite
This is an absolute favorite restaurant of mine. I love every thing about it.
I live in San Francisco and we have many great restaurants but this one
stands out….it is special.

"Special Thanksgiving Menu" advertised, but actually only one entree (turkey stuffed with sausage over a pumpkin puree and broccoli) was on the menu! Every other side was a la carte. All other entrees were pasta centric. My guests wanted to leave and go elsewhere, but we decided to stay.
That faux pas aside, everything was delicious. Most tender, moist turkey I have ever tasted, puree was superb, side veggies of asparagus and spinach were excellent. Stuffing nicely seasoned. Service was attentive, as restaurant was almost empty. BYOB.
Noted other menu items (pasta centric) seemed a tad pricey ($24 for ravioli?) but guess that is offset by the BYOB feature.
Will return next Thanksgiving. Will also try a pasta meal next summer.

Little Italy at the shore
One of the best italian restaurants I have been to including NYC and Italy! The homemade Raviolis were outstanding as was the lasagna. Whenever we are near Spring Lake we make sure we have dinner at Pastaio
