As always Hops & Hominy was fabulous. The servers are helpful, kind, and present. The atmosphere is energetic and fun. Most importantly the food is wonderful! Each time I've been I've had a different item on the menu and each time I am impressed. This place is great for a dinner with friends or a date. The drink menu is creative and tasty. I highly recommend the shrimp and grits! You will not be disappointed!!

Fantastic place. I've been
Fantastic place. I've been here twice to celebrate special occasions and I'd gladly recommend it to any friend looking for comfort food or a good bar in the area.

Great list of beer on tap.
Great list of beer on tap. The deep fried oysters were fabulous. Best pork chop I have ever eaten; moist, tender, flavorful. Everyone at the table was satisfied. The bread pudding isn't what I would call a traditional bread pudding, but was out of this world tasty. Our table also ordered the fried green tomatoes, the burger, and the duck breast. Everyone left happy. Would definitely eat here again. Vibe wasn't amazing but was comfortable and pretty quiet for a small space - although we were definitely off peak with a 6:30 Friday reservation. What a difference the coat of paint makes - almost didn't realize it was the old Azul space.

I loved the black eyed pea
I loved the black eyed pea fritters. The cocktails were well-thought out and had a nice balance of original not too-sweet options and dessert-like drinks. The sous-vide seared pork chop was fantastic and the burger a delight. I wish that we could have stayed for dessert. On the whole, a great experience that I'd be happy to repeat. Our server also was incredibly attentive. I was surprised that the food came out so fast for prime time on saturday night.

Food was creative and beer
Food was creative and beer and bourbon selections were fun.Acoustics were a bit loud and it was hard to read the menu in the dim light.

Nice relaxed atmosphere with
Nice relaxed atmosphere with excellent flavorful food. Everything was cooked perfectly and seasoned to bring out maximum flavor. Service was friendly and prompt. Can't go wrong here. Just don't ask them to call a cab. Apparently they don't have much pull with the cab company. It's much easier to just flag one down outside.

Different food from the usual fare
The food here is pretty heavy - corn bread, fried chicken, macaroni and cheese. Even the salads are heavier than usual.
The food was tasty.
The owner/chef came by the table to say hello, which was a very nice touch. We appreciated it.
The place was bustling on a Saturday night. They seated us upstairs which was almost too quiet at first and then a big group showed up at a nearby table and things got very loud. Things were pretty intense on the main floor, so I'm not sure where the best tables are.
The food choices were interesting compared with the usual fare at other places.
The waitress was amazing - great timing and just the right amount of engagement.
I'd recommend the place for an interesting night out in SF.

First time there and it was AWESOME. Absolutely loved the fried oysters. The "vibe" was outstanding and definitely will be returning.

Great find for a pre-theater dinner
We found Hops & Hominy through OpenTable and are glad we did. The food was great as was the wine. We plan to return to try more items on the menu. The Halibut and the Shrimp & Grits were very good. We followed that with the bread pudding, which was also pretty darn good.

Great spot! Catch of the day is always delicious. Shrimp and grits are amazing though.
5/3/2013 4:00:00 PM
Service was excellent on abusy night. Fried green tomatoes were excellent! The shrimp and grits were amazing! Definitely will come back!

Chic, Southern style
LOVED the collard greens and mac and cheese. Great, homey Southern comfort food with an upscale slant. Service was very attentive - nice, unpretentious attitude. Definitely a favorite!

Found this little place hidden by Union Square, down an alley. The ambiance was fantastic and the food was very good.

Great Food, Unique Menu
The staff is friendly, helpful, and unafraid to give recommendations--somewhat easy because every dish on the menu must be delicious.
Black bean fritters and fried oysters to start, followed by fried chicken with collard greens and corn bread, and bacon infused shrimp and grits for dinner--everything was well-prepared and tasted great!!
We also got tasty cocktails that often featured bacon :)
This was a top notch dining experience that is definitely repeatable. I'll be back to try more of the menu and deserts!!

Great food and great atmosphere.
Great food and great atmosphere. A staple for dates, good friends, and good food.
6/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
Good food, slow service...
When we arrived we were the second table, and for some reason the service was slow. It was like they were not actually ready to be open at 11, we got there at 11:15. The food was great and creative, and they change their brunch menu often. The grits were amazing! The chef was friendly, atmosphere pleasant. I would give it a second try.
6/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
Insanely good Mac & Cheese
This great neighborhood bar/restaurant is a must, simply for 1 dish...the cast iron Mac& Cheese.
6/23/2013 4:00:00 PM
This place is awesome!!! Will be eating here again when I visit my son.
6/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
We happened in here on a whim and it was a great whim! Delicious food (especially the pork chop), great friendly service and a cool-hip ambiance.
6/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Was just what we had hoped for in our dining experience. The black eyed pea fritters were crab able good!

A happy dinner experience
What a great restaurant! All of the food was amazing and tasted wonderful. I had the shrimp and cheddar grits which were phenomenal. My family ordered the fried chicken and the halibut. Both dishes tasted great! I loved the interior of the restaurant and it's location, tucked down a quiet alleyway. The wait staff was kind and helpful, the service was somewhat slow but only because of how busy the restaurant was. Overall the pace was good and the beer selection definitely kept my family occupied. Being from the northeast, I've perceived southern comfort food as rich, fattening and starchy. Hops and hominy had my preconceptions smashed and delivered fresh, delicious, and flavorful dishes that made my taste buds do a happy dance :)

As holidaymakers in SF we were just finding our feet when we saw the sign, intrigued, we investigated further and was so glad we did.
Great place, simple, laid back atmosphere, fantastic service, craft beers to die for and the food; outstanding!!
We are already planning to go back before we leave!
7/2/2013 4:00:00 PM
The food was extremely flavorful and the service competent. Really enjoyed H&H and will return for the sophisticated comfort food!

A Go-To Restaurant for me
One of my favorite restaurants. I'm always happy with the food! Great cocktail selection too.
Only note, this time my friend ordered the salmon and it was rather bland.
7/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
Love Hops and Hominy!
Have been here on 2 occasions, always great food and service. We had the Fried Oysters with Jalapeno Aiolli, scrumptious! Followed that with Shrimp and Grits, and the Fried Chicken special. All was delicious! The service is great, we were never lacking for anything! Highly recommend Hops and Hominy!
7/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
I loved this place and will definiltey be back!! The chef came out to greet us and he even modified a dish for my two children and made it kid-friendly. The hostess was very accommodating and friendly. The waitress was great and responsive. Overall, it was a great experience. I enjoyed my fried oyster. Too bad the asparagus was not on the menu that night...........
H&H is situated right across from a parking structure and we lucked out on paying $11 in the city!!! Big plus if you frequent H&H after 7 pm.

Great dinner w/ out-of-town friend
The decor/ambience is young & stylish but not uncomfortably hipster-ish. This was a Tuesday night and it was hoppin'! I'm glad I made us reservations. We got there at 6:30 and every seat at the bar was filled with lots of people standing around it chatting. There was also a group party. We both got the "Gin & Jam" cocktail which was great! They make the jam there. I got the mushroom ravioli for a starter which was FANTASTIC and then had the "Southern Carbonara" which was ok: there was very little meat in it and the sauce was kind of too thick for me. The server was pleasant but slow (+ forgot my order) and my friend told her he had a nut allergy which she kept forgetting. She was attentive about the drinks, though :).

Hops & Hominy for a Special Night
This restaurant is amazing - southern comfort food that is ON POINT (those fried oysters are to die for). I especially appreciate the unique and well chosen wine list. The beers and wines are all very special and different and just made it extra cool. A great find for downtown where the food is almost always mediocre, overpriced and catered to tourists. This is a great restaurant!
7/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Comfortable & Friendly
A small menu but a few well seasoned options. Comfort food, good drink options. Could use a few more staples that are endemic to southern cuisine.
7/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
Came here for Chicken Fried Steak but got swayed by friends to try the Buttermilk Fried Chicken....All had a great time! Dinner, service and Ambiance was great! My friends Love the Chicken Fried Steak but wish the portions were larger . I had the Buttermilk Fried Chicken which was juicy, also amazing! Will definately come back.

Great new find
Although the noise level was a little too loud for my liking, as it is at many places (hard to hear the other people at my table), I am looking forward to going back to try other dishes. With the noise level, I would probably prefer to dine with only one other person. The fried chicken was super moist and delicious! The service was great; not pushy, making you feel rushed, never had to wait long to ask a question/order drink or food and a very nice, friendly attitude. Even, who I think was the head chef, came by to ask how we liked our meals and thanked us for dining with them. Looking forward to a return visit.
8/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
There were a number of interesting choices on the menu. The fritters were a great start but I can't recall the last time I had such an amazing Country Fried Steak. The Chorizo Gravy was delicious along with the Summer Corn. My companion's Southern Fried Chicken was another perfect selection. And dont miss out on the Cornbread! Loved our waitperson and was very comfortable in this upbeat space. The only down side was lighting. I had to use my cell phone to read the menu. If you like Southern cuisine, don't miss this place!

This was a great find tucked
This was a great find tucked away in a quaint Connor of Union Square. The food was great quality, presentation made the food tempting, and the food tasted great. I loved the space of the restaurant. This is a good place to meet friends or for dates. Bar selection is accommodating to cocktail connoisseurs.

True southern cooking!
This place nailed it! We had the shrimp and grits, pork chops, and duck all which were excellent. Loved the cornbread cooked which was served in the mini iron pans. The drinks were fantastic and strong! The place had a positive energy and excellent service. The prices were reasonable. If you want a real southern dish in the heart of San Fran, this is the place! This place should be on the "MUST EAT LIST" when in San Fran!
9/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great go to for a nice dinner!
Great restaurant to meet up with friends and the food is awesome. I think the restaurant should find a way to dampen the noise. It is so loud in the restaurant and it is great for groups so big groups get a little rowdy. Otherwise, Love the place and will be back again!
9/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
Southern hip yet comfy
Hip yet comfort southern food. Loved it. Like bringing charleston to sf!

Good southern food ...fun place
We found this restaurant while shopping in the union square area hidden in a cute ally. We enjoyed the shrimp and grits as well as the fried chicken. Great find in the union square area if you like southern food.
10/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
Non tourist downtown spot
This is a great place to go if you need a before show dinner in Union Square. There is a garage right across the street. Its a 5 minute walk to the Curran and about a 15-20 min walk to the Orpheum. Great drinks and food. Not an overly complicated menu which I prefer and really just get the fried chicken. Its amazing.

I lived in New Orleans for
I lived in New Orleans for over 35 years, so I know shrimp and grits and cornbread and fried chicken . Everything prepared at Hops is well-done and tastes fine. The version of shrimp and grits is differerent from other I have had but the difference (cheddar cheese?) is welcomed. The main complaints are the noise level and the price. Let's get real. This is southern home cooking not fussy gourmet dishes. The cost alone at this restaurant necessitates that it become only a place for special occasions, and who would go to a place for a special occasion that presents a limited menu of items that can be cooked in most home kitchens?
10/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
such great food and amazing drink list. plan to go again and again! so great to find a spot like this in the downtown area. not a tourist trap, just a great hidden gem of a local spot!

Southern charm in San Francisco
As someone who has lived in the Southern part of the U.S., I am always looking for a restaurant that serves authentic Southern food with a modern flair. Hops & Hominy was exactly what I was hoping for. Delicious food, truly authentic Southern-style dishes, warm ambiance, and friendly, competent service. I had the shrimp and grits, which was outstanding, along with the corn bread and shared a fall salad with my boyfriend. He had the pork chop with a variety of vegetables which he loved, and a side of cheese grits (the sides are large, so plan on sharing). It was a bit loud since we were seated near the bar, but there was another section of the restaurant that you might request. Overall, we really enjoyed it and would recommend highly!
10/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
Go for the food
The upscale southern cuisine hits just the right note. Every dish we had was spot on. Highlights were the mac and cheese appetizer and the shrimp and grits. The micro-beer selection is small but diverse. It was very loud so not the place to go if you really want to have a lot of in-depth serious conversation.
10/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
We were looking for fried chicken and stumbled upon Hops and Hominy. The beer menu was great and interesting. We got the fried chicken and the Prawns and Cheesy Grits, both were excellent.
11/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great Southern Style food
The food here was mostly outstanding. Perfect fried chicken with a nice spice. My wife had the pasta and it was quite rich, but very nice homemade pasta.
11/11/2013 4:00:00 PM
Very good food and cool atmosphere
Very good food and cool atmosphere but because the bar is part of the restaurant it is very, very loud. Had a hard time talking with the people at my table. But we were there on a Friday night so maybe other nights of the week are not so loud. But worth going for the great comfort food!
11/14/2013 4:00:00 PM
Great food quality and excellent bacon infused bourbon!
11/17/2013 4:00:00 PM
Twice in one week
Took a group of colleagues out for a team dinner and everything was great. Food & drinks -- you can't to wrong with anything.
Also went for a dinner for two. Excellent all around. We tried the fried chicken, shrimp & grits, and ribs. All fantastic. And for appetizers you have to try the black eyed pea fritters & oysters.
For drinks - try anything with the bacon infused bourbon.

Down home goodness
Took my girlfriends parent who were visiting from out of town. They are always looking for something a little more upscale but do not always want to pay for it. So we decided on this place after a long day of wine tasting. It was a great choice! It has a wonderful ambiance, lively and energetic with great ever changing beers on tap and a great cocktail program to match. The food wS delicious as well. We chose a few things before our entrees and each chose something different. None if us could say one poor thing about our food. Great service+great food= great find. I would definitely suggest this place for anyone looking for some great food and friendly without breaking the bank.
11/22/2013 4:00:00 PM
Not very flexible
They would not make any exceptions to the menu, we wanted to trade some sides and they would not allow, seemed petty. Also asked for hot tea and they had a small miserable selection. The food we did have was good, especially the dessert, but it seems they could be more accommodating. It was only their way.
