You Get What You Pay For
Flawless, artful, delightful. A total homerun. To anyone reading a review about them being bossy, ignore. The servers, hosts, and sushi sansei are kind professionals. Omakase means entrustment. They know what they are doing.

The sushi is amazingly delicious
The sushi is amazingly delicious and fresh, the service is impeccable and the omakase is a must-get.

Great Food and Service!!
Brought a mainland guest who heard of the place but wanted to the experience. We sat at the sushi bar. Sushi staff was excellent at explaining each of the dishes that were brought out. The food was perfect and filling enough when the set menu was finished. My guest wss thoroughly impress with the food and service and it is now favorite sushi place.

Great Sushi and experience. Some might find the no soya sauce a challenge but otherwise great

Beyond all expectations!
We arrived early but were seated within 5 minutes of our time. Unlike some of the reviews I read, the service we received was top drawer. The servers were helpful, friendly and informative. We opted for the 13 course tasting, two pieces per person. You can stop any time and we were told and the cost would be prorated. We literally stuffed ourselves! We probably should have stopped after course 8 or nine, but we were experiencing new tastes with each course and did not want to miss anything that we never tasted before. We knew after the first course that we were in one of the best sushi restaurants. The cost of the 13 course tasting is $120 pp. We chose the recommended saki, that was in the middle cost wise. We will be back in two years

Simply the best sushi ever.
Simply the best sushi ever. The chefs and wait staff were extremely attentive and personable. I don't have the money to go there all the time... but wish I did.

What to say that someone else
What to say that someone else hasn't?!? Sushi Sasabune is #1 for a reason, they pay attention. Everything from the second you walk in has been well thought out. Their staff is extremely knowledgeable, the atmosphere very comfortable and their chef is a mad scientist. I took my girlfriend there for her birthday, we both got Omasake (sp). She got the eastern, I went with western. We ate things I don't ever expect I'll have a chance of trying again, and I'm an adventurous eater. Out of 13 courses we both had 3 that took our breathe away. Whomever commented that you could feel each grain of rice in your mouth was 110% right. I would recommend this place to anyone for a special occasion, or if you just want an unforgettable meal.
4/19/2013 4:00:00 PM
One of the best meals I've ever had, hands down. The staff was charming and super helpful in guiding me through the omakase experience. Don't be afraid to ask questions, then sit back and enjoy. Follow the one-bite rule for the nigiri. You wouldn't tear a Picasso in half, would you?
4/23/2013 4:00:00 PM
The Japanese omakase was amazing, but you have to be willing to be adventurous because it's chef's choice and all seafood.
4/30/2013 4:00:00 PM
A Must Try at Least Once
The food that I was served was of exceptional quality. However - it was all pre-cut. And it was not at all adventurous - pretty straight-forward run-of-the-mill servings. I was not served uni.
Omakase taken to an extreme level. Almost arrogance. One chef went out of his way to describe each individual offering. Another didn't say much - but stared at what seemed like everyone just to make sure they were eating each piece appropriately.
One Japanese couple were refused soy sauce - they were instructed that their nigiri was appropriately seasoned for them. I was in town for the evening. Not sure if it was worth the money. However it was generally a pleasant experience. I dined alone
5/3/2013 4:00:00 PM
best sushi ever!
We did the omakase and every dish was absolutely delicious. It is definitely worth a return visit.
5/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
I would dare say that this is the best omakase I've ever had - even better than the ones I've tried from my last trip to Japan. There were just really subtle and significant creative points for each dish that still stayed true to Japanese food.

For serious expert sushi eaters
For serious expert sushi eaters only!!!!!
All fish course sushi was excellent. I couldn't do the raw ika, squid, and uni. Bill was $350 for two if us. If a first time amature sushi enthusiast were to eat here and get this bill, he would have a heart attack. Seriously!!!! This was my second visit here but I dont think I'll dine here again. For this price, I can get an iPad mini. Hahahahhaa!!!!

everything we heard, but better
My wife and I had been hearing about Sasabune for some time, but this was our first time trying it. It deserves every bit of its amazing reputation. I have never had a sushi experience like this before. It was truly breathtaking.
We sat at the sushi bar and had omakase, or chef's choice. For 13 courses our sushi master presented us with sushi, both familiar and unfamiliar, that left us amazed and wanting more. All the while, the service by the chef, and the restaurant staff was friendly and flawless.
This is n expensive meal, but if you value quality, creativity, newness, and service, it is worth every penny and more.
5/16/2013 4:00:00 PM
There may be a few places that comes close but this is close to the pinnacle of sushi. Very expensive but it is worth the price as everything is seasoned or sauced perfectly. You will savor every bite. You will be wasting y our money if your idea of sushi is a california roll.

Incredible Experience and Food
This establishment was recommended by my foodie nephew that is a Captain in the Army and has been stationed in Hawaii. We found this gem to be the best sushi we have ever experienced and I have traveled the world including Japan. We sat at the sushi bar which requires we receive the chef's 13 "course" selection . Similar to Seinfeld's "Soup Dictator" there are some specific rules to follow which made sense to us but may ruffle the feathers of others. If less adventurous or just want to control your own experience don't sit at the bar. Highly recommend this restaurant. I believe reservations are necessary, especially if you want to be at the bar. Ensure you arrive hungry.

At the pinnacle of Sushi art.
I've been to the Honolulu outpost of Sasbune three times. Each time the 13-14 course Omakase style meal has been truly outstanding. The minced and reformed toro with special house seasoning is perfect sushi, but all the meticulous creations seved are a delicious adventure. Overlook the sketchy location on S. King street, the food and service are 100% luxury.

Best Sushi in Hawaii
Sasabune is worth the price. All fish is wild and flown in daily. They were very accomodating to adjust the Omakase to not include shellfish and the sequence and seasoning of each course was amazing. Service (Derrick) was also impeccable. Restaurant is very clean, small but tastefully decorated. No need to go anywhere in the world for the best sushi. Didn't realize they have sister restaurants in LA and NYC.

Melt In Your Mouth Sushi
Loved the way the fresh fish was served on warm rice. We enjoyed it with a lovely glass of Kubota sake.
My husband made it through all 13 courses; I had to stop at 8. Best courses were the toro and the squid stuffed with blue crab. Loved the little matcha flan I had for dessert.
Service was prompt and courteous, rather serious.

Amazing sushi experience, amazing quality of fish, but be prepared for the price tag.

Ichi-ban Sushi Ryori
Sushi Sasabune is my ichi-ban place to go. The sushi is more than spectacular. I actually use there quality of sushi as a measure when I eat at other "high-end" sushi places. So far, I felt there were a few places that came close, but didn't meet meet or exceed the quality of sushi at Sasabune. I know this is all subjective and still have many more sushi places to try, but Sushi Sasabune will always be my number one place to go in Hawaii.
7/4/2013 4:00:00 PM
As amazing as I remembered!
I ate here a few years ago and hadn't had a chance to go back until now. I had been telling my husband stories about how incredible the food was and how they instructed you to eat. I really wanted to try the Japanese menu since I like the more exotic sushi items but my husband wasn't feeling adventurous. Everything we had was incredibly fresh and even though we had the American menu, the items were seasoned in ways that I hadn't had before. The service was great, the staff was friendly and helpful. I'm glad we live a few thousand miles away or we'd go broke eating here. It was expensive but if you love sushi its worth it. I think this will be stop on our itinerary every time we are in HI.

Best hidden secret in Oahu.
Best hidden secret in Oahu. Must sit at the chefs table. Very pricey and worth every penny. If youre not an adventurous eater this isn't the place for you. Best sushi Ive ever had!

Sushi sasabune is my favorite restaurant in teh world. Pricey, but it is a life experience.
7/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
We probably eat more sushi than any other single food. It is one of the "core food groups" for us. These folks do it like no other that we have ever experienced...even in Japan. If you TRULY like sushi (I mean REALLY, not like most Westerns "like sushi") then go here and go with the Japanese style omakase. it is not going to be composed of fermented shellfish guts or pickled fish scales. It is going to be some awesome, fairly rare, cuts and preparations as well as some of your old favorites. It was amazing. And the sake!...OFF THE CHARTS! We got a bottle of which only 400 are made a year (and the price was not that bad). It is not going to be a cheap night but save your money and go! If you truly, truly like fish...GO! :)
7/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
most expensive but best sushi
Omakase at the bar is 13 courses and at the end they ask if you want any thing else. Total for 2 plus 20% was ~$300. Superb technique, execution, quality food and some unique items like scallop with jalapeño paste, king salmon with sheet of seaweed and toasted sesame seed.

World class sushi, at a price
The sushi here is phenomenal. Absolutely. And each bite is prepared fresh: they bring you a couple of pieces, explain what each one is (what kind of fish it is, where on the fish it comes from, what other ingredients are on it, and in some cases, how they recommend that it be eaten), and when you've finished that, they bring you your next "course" (another plate with 1-3 pieces. There is sushi, of course, but also neat additions like lobster and oysters. My only complaint is that the price is quite high. Expect about $120 per person, not including drinks or dessert (not that you'll need dessert!).

Out of World
This is my second dining in Sesabune, all foods are raw. You can't imagine the taste. It is excellent.

In one word...WoW!
Sushi Sasabune is an EXCELLENT place for a special occasion dinner. It is pricey so definitely not a place to go regularly (Our bill was $200 for 2 ppl) but a perfect place for a special place if you like sushi. The way it works is that the chef "surprises" you with different dishes. The dishes will keep coming out until you let them know you are getting full and then you are charged by the amount of different dishes. The sushi is Japanese style... (Not made into rolls. A bite size slice of fish on top of rice) It was probably the best sushi I have ever tasted. Every bite was so fresh and tender.. Just melts in your mouth. The service is OUTSTANDING. Great spot for a special date night looking for something a little different. LOVED IT!

Excellent nego toro. Watch out for the hidden wasabi bombs in some of the pieces.

the best sushi in Honolulu
No one comes close to the quality of sushi at Sushi Sasabune. Service is impeccable with plates quietly disappearing within seconds after you finish a plate.

Best sushi in Hawaii!!! It is like eating art work!!!

Highest quality of sushi. I have eaten top of the line sushi all over the world including Japan, California, etc... This restaurant makes the top of the list. The Toro was incredible as well as many of the other chef selections. Our server was extremely nice and informative and the restaurant was very accommodating (we were 30 min late for our reservation). Very expensive but we were on vacation so able to justify the high cost. Approx $175/per with a $50 bottle of Sake. Ate all 13 courses then ordered a few pieces after. Again, absolutely outstanding fish quality.

We were in Hawaii for the first time and wanted to enjoy delicious sushi. We did the 13 course omakase and it was amazing. Everything was delicious and we didn't have to wait too long between each plate. It was the most expensive meal I have ever had, but it was also the best meal I have ever had. The chefs explained each plate well, and from time to time they would drop in some sarcastic humor. Our water never dropped below half the glass and the staff was friendly and attentive.

Same O, same O!
Same O, same O, which in this case means Outstanding! Been there on several occasions throughout the years when on the Islands. Consistent high quality experience. A must visit.

Some of the best sushis ever tasted
Service was impeccable. Greeting was courteous and service was beyond reproach. Even the sushi chefs was nice and friendly. This establishment provides great service from all people who work there.
Had the omakase sushi course. All you need to know is this: It is GOOD. This is not a place for people who typically orders sushi rolls. This is classic nigiri sushi / mussels / seafood. Mostly raw, a few cooked. The sushi chefs chooses for you and at the end of the omakase, if you are still hungry, you can order more individually should you wish. Definitely recommend for serious sushi foodies. A must try.
9/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
Glad we went, despite the price!
This was an incredible sushi experience, especially for anyone who has never had anything beyond good traditional American sushi. A must do for anyone who visits Oahu, likes sushi, and not on a strict budget. The service was great, the fish was incredibly fresh, and the tasting menu made us step beyond our traditional bounds. Don't expect traditional American sushi rolls or soy sauce. However, the price tag is hefty... Before drinks be willing to spend $100 on sushi per person, plus tax and tip!
9/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
This is the best Sushi Bar in the State! You don't get a menu and get served the Chef's choices. I have never had a bad piece of Sushi and the experience of trying something new is wonderful! I have been here over a dozen times and have never been disappointed. I love to take guest there as it is an experience they will never forget.

Some of the best sushi
One can't go wrong with Sasabune. It's reputation for good sushi is well deserved. Good atmosphere, sitting at the bar is a great experience, especially when sharing with someone special.
10/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
Not for amateur sushi eaters
Came here while on vacation. Read about the strict policies, which actually was a draw for me because I consider myself a sushi snob and will regularly defer to the chef at other restaurants for omakase.
The 13 course meal was incredible. Every course was explained on its origins and how to eat it. I enjoyed it thoroughly because many of the dishes I'd never had before.
Service was impeccable. They take a lot of pride in clearing plates, filling drinks in a timely fashion.
If you're on a budget, this place isn't for you, but if you can afford it, you'll be hard pressed to find a better sushi dinner. I'm from SoCal and my #1 place there doesn't hold a candle to sansabune.

Reminder of Japan
Outstanding food, great service. Sushi Sasabune runs a tight ship making great service look effortless. The food itself is a notch above the rest. In my opinion, the closest thing to Japan you can get in Hawaii.
10/4/2013 12:00:00 AM
Very well presented and prepared, just be open to eating lots of different things or might not be the right choice.

Authentic Japanese fine dining
Went to sushi susabune based upon trip advisor. What I can tell you about this resturant is that it's something you would expect when visiting Japan, minimalist from the outside but as soon as you step on the inside authentic, to the point where mobile phones allowed for pictures only. We went with the 13 course "trust us" and the chefs and the chefs did not disappoint. They used the freshest quality seafood & Food was prepared supberly. Local fish sashimi and signature dish were a melt in your mouth experience. Service is impeccable and staff ensured you knew what you were eating and were accommodating. I would have no hestitation is recommending to my best friends and any foodie who appreciates a fine dining experience.

The best sushi ever!
It was hands down the best sushi I have ever eaten. The experience of being told where the fish came from and what was the best way to eat it really made it all the better. If you love sushi, you need to come here at least once.
11/6/2013 4:00:00 PM
A winner every time!
This was the forth year in a row that we have eaten here. It hard to believe when fresh fish is the main stay of a restaurant that this restaurant can always deliver the best fish. Of course the preparation is extradanary and the delivery equally as extraordary but being able to deliver such a fine product almost seems impossible! But they do it each and every time.
11/12/2013 4:00:00 PM
The sushi was excellent! Fresh fish and warm rice melted in my mouth. Eating here was a great experience!

Pricey, but worth it. Fish is fresh flown in every day from global sources. Atlantic Halibut, Japanese Oysters, Malaysian Prawns, etc
