We will be back. Rooms are just right. Phillip at the Grill took good care of us as he has others for 37 years. We must stay longer next time.

We had a fabulous time at the English Grill. We had initially intended to have the famous Kentucky Hot Brown where it was invented, but found they were having a Derby tasting menu preview with wine pairings. We couldn't resist after the server showed us the menu. It was outstanding. Since we visited during the start of the Derby celebration, it was probably a special time for tasting and not something that would be occurring often.

A Derby Celebration
I surprised my wife with a trip to the Kentucky Derby. It was the first time we had been there. After doing a little homework, I made reservations on line at The English Grill. Of course, Derby Day was booked but Thursday was available, so we took it. Everything was perfect. The beet salad, the pork chop, the salmon, the flaming chocolate dessert, the service- all spectacular. Even the reservation person was extremely helpful on how to get there, where to park and how best to fight the traffic. The parade finished at 7:00 and dinner at The Brown immediately following. Life is good.

Kentucky Derby Fantasy!
Don't miss this experience! It was the dining highlight of our Derby trip! We landed in Louisville and headed straight to the Brown Hotel. Although we were delayed by parade traffic they held our reservation until 9:30PM! We were amazed by the hospitality- the hostess was so obliging and our waiter was polished and a pro! We met the General Manager of the hotel and The young new chef at the English Grill gave us a tour of his kitchen and served us herbs from his own organic farm. Cuisine: the meal was one of the best I have ever eaten! Simply a great, world-class dining experience.

Best HOT BROWN I've Ever Had...
This is a pretty fancy place, not cheap, but worth the experience. It very quiet and romantic for us, but we went fairly late on a Tuesday night.
The cocktails were made perfectly. The appetizer of Gnocchi was delicious, and of course, their famous Hot Brown was amazing. I couldn't put my fork down. My girlfriend ordered a Hot Brown from a brewery in downtown Louisville the night before, so I tried it, and there was no comparison.
The service was great as well. The server seemed a little short with us at first, but as the night went on, he opened up and chatted our ear off and gave us our dessert on the house. The bus boy was very friendly too. Highly recommend this place.

Mothers Day Brunch
The Mothers Day brunch was fabulous and we will definitely consider going again for other meals.

English Grill still fit and proper
My wife and I recently dined at the English Grill at the Brown Hotel. it had been some time since I had visited. The ambiance and service was outstanding. We had a great choice of entrees and all the courses were timed for good dinner flow without waiting or rushing. If you have a special occasion or dinner before a show, check it out!
5/16/2013 4:00:00 PM
The staff and service was exceptional. The wine list covered a nice range. The food presentation was very nice. Interesting salads and great choice of traditional main courses; the food was delicious. The room was quiet, which was nice, but then we were early diners the evening we went, so not many other patrons.

Husband and I went for his birthday and enjoyed everything! Best service I have received at a restaurant in a while. I ate the pork chop which was fabulous! Since we are new to Kentucky, the main reason for the restaurant choice was to experience the original Kentucky Hot Brown. This sandwich was worth every bit of the hype! We did not have any appetizers because I am a picky eater and do not eat seafood, but I could not them tasting anything less than amazing! The servers were attentive yet they allowed us to enjoy the meal.
Overall, fabulous experience!

Old World Elegance
I took my wife to Louisville for her 40th birthday. Neither of us had ever visited the city, nor did we know much about it. We struck gold with The English Grill on our first night. Service was wonderful. The ambience of the historic Brown Hotel and its restaurant is for people who really want to know what life was like for the well-heeled in the 1920s. I told our waiter that it was our first time to the restaurant and that I was having trouble deciding between three of the entrees - he did something I've never seen before and actually recommended the dish that happened to be the least expensive of my candidates. He said that a newbie like me should definitely try the Hot Brown. I did, and it was wonderful.

Salmon was excellent. Not
Salmon was excellent. Not very crowded. Visited for our anniversary and was presented a complementary chocolate mousse dessert. (Called a "strip tease" b/c had chocolate rose petals with rum inside that was lit on fire and the petals "stripped" down and melted on the cake.).

Each dish we had was wonderful. The chef is creative and puts thought into each dish. The result is unique and delicious food! Service was great.

Elegant and Memorable
The decor was old world and elegant. The hostess was warm and sincere in welcoming us. Our waiter, Thomas, made our whole dining experience a memorable one. The entire staff was attentive and genuinely concerned for our comfort and enjoyment of the meal. And the food was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. There were so many wonderful choices on their menu in any price range and our selections proved to be perfect. Not being from Louisville, I hope to be able to return and enjoy this wonderful southern hospitality and cuisine again soon.

My twin and I were there for our birthday. It was great. A relaxed setting, great food and service!
6/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
Most amazing service I've ever had. Was even offered a selection of newspapers to read while awaiting my food.
6/11/2013 4:00:00 PM
Still talking about it...
Can hardly wait to come back!
Hostess, waiter, bus person...wonderful service experience.
We were comfortably seated away from other parties. (Room is a darker wood paneling with padded seating and a white tablecloth...black napkins were offered and appreciated); with lit horse pictures that have cropped off tails hung throughout perimeter walls.
Then the food came. (London broil amuse (compliments of the Chef), Scallop appetizer, salmon entree; BEST meal I have enjoyed in months... memorable.
I just didn't want experience to end...food or service.

We absolutely loved the English Grill. The service and friendliness of the staff was superb. While it is a bit more of an upscale place to eat, the staff were very personable and friendly. The food was excellent. We went here to experience the original Hot Brown sandwich before we left town. It was a high quality dish and a huge portion! Loved the whole experience, as the hotel and restaurant itself is beautiful to look at and admire, too.

Wonderful Dining Experience
My husband and I stayed at the Brown Hotel in Louisville, KY, overnight (wish we stayed longer). We were attending a wedding so a few of the other guests met us, at the English Grill, for dinner. It was the most wonderful dining experience.
The food was exceptional, atomosphere romantic and quiet without the stuffy feeling and the waiter was friendly, warm and professional. All six of us enjoyed our dinner, very much.
The Hotel Staff was also very warm and friendly. We were treated like VIPs for one night.
7/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food was absolutely incredible along with impeccable service. I loved the salmon appetizer following with the halibut over quinoa. The atmosphere was quiet and romantic. Perfect for a date night or special occasion.

Superb seasonal food, great service
This is the perfect place for a special celebration. Service is friendly and attentive, but not fussy. Salads are made with fresh greens from the chef's farm. Each entree is carefully prepared and presented. If you've never had a Hot Brown, this is the place to order one. You'll get the original, invented here in 1926. Never drowning in sauce, it is made to perfection. The English Grill has elegant desserts and a strong wine list. Piano music drifts in from the bar to create a lovely ambience.
When I want to treat myself and my friends to a spectacular dining experience, this is my go to place.
7/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
The English Grill was chosen because of its location, history, and atmosphere for a introductory business dinner. The atmosphere was conducive to conversation, and the interaction with the servers was just enough , and not intrusive. The food was excellent, and the overall experience was wonderful for a business dinner.
7/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
Generally, a very pleasant experience. Subdued lighting and wood on the walls made for a warm atmosphere. The beet & goat cheese salad lacked in that it contained 4 small bites of a beet; the goat cheese patty would have been better if it had been warm. Scallops were well prepared and the Hot Brown was generous in portion. The Strip Tease Chocolate dessert was yummy. Alcohol seemed a bit over-priced. Two drinks each, dinner for two and tip will set you back about $150 and up....
7/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
Nice place for fine dining.
Excellent. Fine dining with unique and well-presented dishes. The service was impeccable.
One note: Compared to lamb chops which I have with some frequency ordered at other fine restaurants, the lamb chops (two relatively small ones) had very little meat which was difficult to remove from the bone. Probably not a good choice for a hungry guest.

Worth the trip to Louisville
When you tell people you are going to Louisville, Kentucky the thing they say you have to have a "Hot Brown" at the Brown Hotel. I myself has seen it on either the Food Network or the Travel Channel. So we went to the place of the origional "Hot Brown" it was better than expected. The place is beautifull, you can imagine the ladies in their finery and the men in suits. Our waiter was fantastic. He had us split our meal and it was enough for both us. We had a mint julip, the goat cheese salad, hot brown and a flaming desert. I would definately recommend going to the Brown if in Louisville.
7/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
Appetizers were memorable. Service was excellent. We were seated next to a very loud group and wanted a quiet dinner. All in all a great night...

A great night out.
We really enjoyed our dinner at the English Grill. The staff were great. Food was awesome and the flaming chocolate mousse dessert was fantastic. Highly recommend this restaurant.

My wife and I had an amazing time.

Great food marginal service
We really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere but inattention and service gaffs by the staff made the whole experience less than special.
8/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
Incredible food delight!
the service was impecible, the salmon was the best in the US i have ever had, the scallop was the best id ever had. everything was good, the drinks, wine, except one thing... the signature dish of the brown...the HOT BROWN, was a major disappointment. i have had this many times all over Louisville, and this one was not even in the top ten! Very blah, and for the price being charged, even more of a dissapointment. Otherwise everything else was fabulous!

Great Special Event Restaurant
Great restaurant for special events, like birthdays and anniverserys
It is fit for foodies and for entertaining big time
Expensive but worth it!

Beautiful and nostalgic!
The food and service were top-notch and my husband and I felt so special dining here! The atmosphere was BEAUTIFUL - it was like dining in a high-class 18th century manor. The service was superb, the food wonderful, and the entire experience was fantastic!
I will admit, the food is a little pricey (our bill was nearly $90 for two of us), but if you split your entree and appetizer, and then get desserts, you won't go home hungry, and it will be an experience to remember! It is a very nice restaurant. I recommend it!
Even the chef came by to say "Hello" and that was a pleasant surprise!
8/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
Excellent meal and great atmosphere
The English Grill is very old-fashioned but in a good way. The wood paneling, carpeting, ceiling moldings, horsy prints and overstuffed chairs all hearken back to another era. The staff is attentive and efficient, finding a nice balance between formal and friendly. The menu is fairly traditional but with some nods to contemporary trends. Most importantly the food is excellent, perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. The signature cocktails are inventive without getting precious (and of course they can do any traditional drink), and the wine list is superb, tending towards pricy but with some good values. Obviously an expensive place, but the experience justifies the price. Dress up a bit and indulge yourself. You'll be glad you did.
8/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
This was my first time visiting The English Grill and I am now hooked! I will definitely be coming back.

A wonderful dining experience
We went to the English Grill to enjoy a wonderful dinner. Our total experience was "above the norm". It started with parking in the wrong place and having one of the Bellman intercede and take our car to the valet holding area. Secondly, we "attempted" to enter the hotel unknowingly through the employee entrance. A couple of young ladies let us in and directed us to the restaurant. Our dining experience was nothing but the best. Our server Kurt catered to our needs quickly and professionally including helping us make our entree, wine and dessert selections. In the end, we enjoyed a very relaxed meal and a dining experience that ranks among our top five.
9/4/2013 12:00:00 AM
One the top three in Louisville
And that's saying a lot. Pricey and worth it for special occasions. Elegant, quiet and every table is desirable. Staff makes informed and satisfying wine selections.
9/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great meal with awesome service
My wife and I were celebrating her birthday and had the best time. They catered to our every need and made us feel comfortable. I would highly recommend this for a great night on the two. As it is also walking distance to 4th street entertainment and the theater district in Louisville
9/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great birthday celebration spot
We were visiting Louisville with 2 other couples in celebration of my husband's birthday and chose The English Grill as our dinner spot after a day of touring bourbon distilleries. It was the perfect choice! Our meal was delicious, and the service was well-paced, allowing us plenty of time for visiting between courses. I would definitely recommend it for a special night out.

Up To Its Reputation
We had a really nice meal at the English Grill. The staff was fantastic, food was very good, and I would highly recommend for a romantic evening. It's on the pricey side, but no more than other restaurants of this level, and no more than we expected. The 2nd floor lobby of the Brown Hotel is beautiful. I'm only sorry the restaurant wasn't a bit more crowded on a saturday evening.
9/26/2013 5:00:00 PM
Perfect special night out
Great food in a quiet intimate setting. Waitstaff was helpful but unobtrusive and let us enjoy a leisurely slow paced meal.
9/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Southern Louisville sophistication
Beautiful old hotel that is well maintained, but not museum like. It has the true ambiance of old, southern Louisville; not a contrivedenvironment. Menu would easily fit into any sophisticated Paris restaurant -- both the food and its presentation were excellent.
Service staff is very personable, friendly (but not intrusive) and helpful.
Park just west of 4th Street entrance, on second level and wall direcly into the hotel.
And oh -- the walls are lined with paintings of horses and horse racing.
9/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
We took some customers out
We took some customers out for dinner and drinks. We had 10 for dinner. The wine selection and food was terrific. The atmosphere of the Brown Hotel is very pleasing. You almost go back in time a little. Like most restaurants that are busy and with ten people at a table, the noise level went up, but not near as bad as some restaurants that I have been to. Well done!!
10/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
We loved it!
Nice restaurant to spend an evening with friends - service was paced so each course could be enjoyed. The special crab salad of the night was incredible! Steaks were cooked to order and the halibut was a do-again dish. We would do the whole evening again!
10/4/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food here is just amazing! The atmosphere is quiet, you can actually carry on a conversation without shouting. Old school dining at its best.
10/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
For an old school evening, with excellent food and superior service, this is the place. Although the food is creative and well done, the service is outstanding. I highly recommend for a special occasion.

Our experience at The English Grill

We dined at the Chef's Table and had a superb meal and a great time. the 7 course dinner was excellent and the wine pairings were perfect. We had fun hopping up to look at the line and got lots of personal attntion from Chef Ryan and his capable staff. A memorable, special evening.

Visiting louisville and chose the restaurant by reading reviews and proximity to the Louisville Palace. The Halibut was as good as any entree I have ever had. Would go back for that alone.
11/4/2013 4:00:00 PM
Outstanding and attentive staff. Excellent menu and ambience. Worth the effort to just sit in the bar for a cocktail to take in the hotel and slide over to the restaurant to capture the whole Brown experience.
