Went here for brunch recently
Went here for brunch recently with my husband. I had the biscuits and gravy with a side of two eggs and he had the fried catfish and cheesegrits with a biscuit on the side. We both thought the biscuits were the best we've ever eaten at a restaurant. Next time I go I'll probably prefer to sit downstairs, which has nicely done brickwork and is a little cozier than the upstairs part. The only thing that bothered me was a certain musty smell but I think it might have come from the dried flowers on the table. That's a bit of decor I wouldn't mind if they did away with. I'll definitely go back. They smoke their own pork and brisket and I'm willing to bet it's delicious. Lots of other organic and house made things on the menu as well.

Took a chance on this restaurant
Took a chance on this restaurant a month ago, and I've been back 3 times! And the portions are great. You can take some home for lunch the next day.
I love the Pork Chops, the Bone Marrow, the Okra. Have a Manhattan, and let the evening take its course.
Oh, and the Pecan Pie.

Laid Back Brunch
Great, laid back brunch spot. We had a large group and the hostess was very accommodating. They also don't put a cap on your unlimited mimosas and are constantly bringing more around! Food did take a little while to come out, but we were enjoying ourselves so we hardly notcied.
Highlight recommend the fried chicken and big biscuit!

So good! Biscuits are addictive and the portions are huge! An all over feast and great time! Perfect place for a group of foodie friends to get together and enjoy a great meal!

Incredible food and delicious
Incredible food and delicious bloody marys. Don't expect to get anything done with your day after having unlimited mimosas with brunch. They need to hire more staff! Everyone is awesome and hustles, but don't go with a deadline if you're there during the busy brunch time.

incredibly accommodating place, wonderful southern menu! yum yum.

the only issue with The Cardinal
the only issue with The Cardinal is how crowded & noisy it gets. And the weekend brunch audience doesn't make that any better by behaving like they're at a frat party or dive bar. the awesome food & great people who work there counteract that.

Absolutely the BEST FRIED
Absolutely the BEST FRIED CHICKEN in NYC (and I've been all over town searching for chicken this ethereal), great burgers and bbq. The crab hush puppies are outstanding and the fried oysters are simply heavenly. The wait staff are really congenial and friendly but not intrusive. The decor looks like rustic North Carolina. This place is wonderful.

Went for the burger—delicious!
Went for the burger—delicious! Fried okra is stellar! Will go back to sample fried chicken... and they deliver!

solid comfort food
The fried chicken was awesome, done just right: crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and came in a generous portion. I ordered the okra, which was batter fried (although t I would have prefered it crisped without batter), and the greens, which come topped with a biscuit. Not the best greens I've had, but I ate them all. My better half ordered the fried green tomatoes, which were not very flavorful, and the mac and cheese which was very good. Server was very efficient, up until dessert, which took a while. It seems they make everything to order and the banana pudding did not disappoint. Super yum!

We got the fried chicken dinner
We got the fried chicken dinner and it was excellent. The mac and cheese was also very good.

Had a little bit of a wait for my table despite having a reservation but the pitcher of Mimosa left on my table for me and my gf more than made up for it.
The food was amazing. I had the chicken biscuit smothered in sausage gravy and my gf had the porkchops.
We were seated downstairs which is am acoustic nightmare but it got better as the bigger tables cleared out and there were less shouts to bounce off the walls.
Service was prompt and super friendly.

Rustic meets real good
I love this place. We came for brunch not sure what to expect by the name. We certainly weren't expecting what we saw. This cute, charming place is filled with wholesome ingredients, creative menu choices, and each tasty morsel makes you feel like you are having a religious experience you'll want to stay and treasure that's for sure. It also doesn't hurt that the mimosas and the Bloody Mary cocktails are well made compliments to each dish. We plan to come back often

Dining as a group
This place was hands down one of the best group dining experiences I have had in NYC. They accommodated our large group easily and offered us a family style menu with literally everything on the menu (this wasn't even planned before hand). The food was delicious and just being able to try everything was very nice. The fried catfish was a hit!

It is all about the fried chicken
Every time I go this place is consistently amazing. If you are in the mood to eat and drink then choose this place!

Perfect for a laid-back party
Hosted a birthday party for 15 at the Cardinal and it could not have been better. They were flexible with the menu, the food was outrageously good, and they were completely okay with us taking 3 hours. The whole group loved it- great experience!
It's worth noting the birthday boy was from Mississippi and he said this was some of the best Fried Chicken and Banana Puddif he'd tasted in New York.

world's best fried chicken
You may wonder why they don't do chicken and waffles. The only reason I can discern is they aren't run of the mill, and their chicken and big biscuits at brunch beats the pants off any waffle I've evee had.

The hush puppies and fried
The hush puppies and fried chicken are great! Nothing else on the menu is all that memorable, but I've been back several times just for those dishes. Granted I am bias, as I'm not a big fan of fried food and they have a lot of it.

Unique service, great food
Living in the south I was highly skeptical about The Cardinal's "southern" proclamations, but the biscuits were warm, melt-in-your-mouth butter goodness. The service was slightly spotty, but if you're with a group of friends that doesn't matter. Go for the bottomless mimosas and hearty offerings.

THE SPOT for Southern Cooking
My girlfriend is from Greensborro, NC and she is the HARDEST person to please when it comes to Southern cooking. We've been looking for good spots from Queens to NJ and back, so when I tell you that this place is THE SPOT YOU'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR and it's right here in Alphabet City, you best take notice.
$5 bottomless Mimosas for Brunch - Awesome
Bloody Mary - Really Really Awesome
1994-2002 West Coast Hip Hop on the system - Awesome (Sounds like someone selected Bone Thugs on Pandora and just let it go)
Biscuits - Really Awesome
Homemade preserves - really good
Sausage Gravy - Out o-t World Awesome
Toad ina Basket - So Damn Good!
Fish & Grits - Are you freaking kidding me awesome?!?!?!
Chicken & Biscuits - I'm crying. It was so awesome.

Went here with a Gilt City voucher and got a TON of food! An entire platter of chicken that my hungry date and I could not finish, plus two large sides (we got fried green tomatoes and deviled eggs), drinks, and salads. The frozen drinks were delicious but not much alcohol in them and we didn't exactly get a choice - they only had one option available. The food was delicious, and the fried chicken especially was spectacular (and yes, I have lived in the south). The restaurant is no frills, and there are about 4 tables outside so get there early to snag one. Definitely recommended for an easy, casual meal. Not exactly the most convenient location, but we went out of our way to get there and I'm glad we did. (PS. Pinball machine downstairs!)

Not disappointed in label as "sourthern food".. everything was perfect!

Best Biscuits and Gravy I have had since moving to New York from the South 5 years ago! Would definitely recommend and will certainly be returning!! Also, great service and wonderful ambiance!

Love this place!
My husband and I love having brunch at The Cardinal! We took some family and friends for bruch this past weekend and they loved it too. The portions are very generous so we usually split a meal but it is always very good. The wait staff is also wonderful and very helpful and polite. We plan on eating here many more times!

catfish and fried chicken are the way to go. juicy and full of flavor. MUST have the banana pudding (with nilla wafers) for dessert, of course. great private area downstairs fit for small parties (10-20 people). staff was attentive and friendly! will definitely go back...

We had a fun time here for brunch. We had a good-sized party--5 of us--and everyone had a good meal. It's rich, but delicious. Chicken and biscuit with gravy was popular at our table. The toad-in-the-hole was baked challah bread with a baked egg, almost souffle like, with bacon. The Anson Mills girts that came with the house-made sausage and two perfect over medium eggs was divine, even without the added cheese. The biscuits tasted like someone who grew up cooking in the South made them, which means they tasted like they were supposed to--flaky and cooked all the way through. Our server was laid back and fun and we sat in the most charming raised alcove downstairs. Want to go back for dinner to dry pulled pork!

Great food and atmosphere, pricing was also reasonable. Service can at times be slow and surly if rushed.

What a delicious lil brunch spot!
Though our OpenTable reservation had no effect in our getting a table (we reserved 2pm, arrived early, and were seated at 2:15/2:20), the staff was wonderfully friendly and the food delicious -- so it was easy to see why it was so popular! Neat, eclectic decorations, our outside table, and bottomless mimosas certainly fixed any grievances we'd had. The sweet potato pancakes were crazy good, as was the housemade bacon!! Definitely would return...maybe not quite as starving this time :)

Great southern food
I bought a gilt city which is what lead me to this restaurant. I got salads which were ok. Just a few greens with a standard dressing. But the main course was the star of the meal. The fried chicken was amazing. The mash potatoes creamy and melted I'm your mouth. The Mac an cheese so good. They added a little pepper to the top which gave it a little kick and made it oh so good. We washed it down with the house white wine which was very light and crisp. I will def be going back with or without a deal !

Best BBQ in NYC!
Cardinal is easily the best BBQ in NYC. Both brunch and dinner are fantastic. Their biscuits and gravy with fried chicken is even better than my grandmothers, and that is say a lot. The BBQ plate is a great deal for dinner!
