Perfect for before the theatre.
Perfect for before the theatre. Excellent food and great service. Menu is not large with choices, but cover the range well and the food is spectacular. Also small choice of wine by the glass, but again covers the range and good for the price.

We really enjoyed our dining experience - every course was exceptional and the service was a-one.

Favorite pre-theater dining
One of our favorite places to go before the Alley theater. Menu is always season and a nice balance of small and large items. Last time we went we all ordered seafood: it was all delicious except the scallops, which were mediocher. Service is pleasant and efficient without making you feel rushed, but if you are on a time schedule--to get to the theater--they take good care of you and make sure you get out on time. We also come here post theater for drinks: a great late night place. Not a big place, but the intimate enviornment is part of the charm.

We usually dine at The Bistro Lancaster when attending a performance in the Houston arts complex, and did so this time. We weren't disappointed as the food was delicious. We shared a goat cheesecake appetizer, and I had the shrimp with corn tamale while my wife had seared sea bass. We had a beautiful bottle of Sancerre that wasn't overpriced. The wait staff are well used to serving per-theater meals and we had plenty of time without being rushed. Plenty of others had the same idea as the restaurant was full as usual. Let's face it, the Bistro is a bit staid and dated while still being a lovely spot for a meal. We were excited to hear from the waiter that the restaurant was going to get an updating soon.

Upon arrival it was quiet, however it filled up soon... Glad I took the time to make a reservation as quite a few people had the same place in mind. Cozy and welcoming, and the food was fantastic. I had the bacon burger, and mom had the Lancaster, their own version of eggs Benedict....which were excellent. The service was a bit slow toward the end, but like I said, business had picked up quite a bit. Oh, and the waitstaff brought all the moms roses. What a nice touch!

Great spot to have reservations before the theater. Made early reservations and it was such a nice peaceful experience.
Was not made to feel rushed. The waitstaff (all of them) were so personable and treated us like we were the only ones in the restaurant.
The food was fabulous. Great expereince.

Great spot to grab a wonderful meal prior to attending a play or musical performance. Dining room is very loud, however, and tables are too close together, otherwise I'd give this experience an outstanding rating.

Before theatre eat out
We really enjoyed the night out at the Bistro. Only compliant would be the smell of paint due to renovation. Other then that... Everything was great! Would go again before a show in town.

Dinner before Sunday show
Had a great meal before a Sunday 7:30 show at the Wortham Theater.
Nice and quiet the evening we were there.

My date and I ate in the Bistro before attending a play at The Alley Theatre. My date has eaten here many times and informed me that I would not be disappointed. She was right. I found the Bistro a perfect place to dine. The setting is quiet and the staff was friendly and professional. Their service was attentive and unobtrusive. The food was very, very good. I will dine here again and again.

Saturday Matinee Brunch
Met with friends for brunch before a matinee at the Alley Theatre. The food and service were excellent. Even though the Lancaster is still under construction, much effort on their part was made to accommodate all your needs. The only thing lacking, I felt, was that wine or mimosa's were not offered for brunch.
6/21/2013 4:00:00 PM
The drinks were great and food and service was the best. We will see you again. The only thing I will say on a down note, is the tables are a little to close.

Made our night in town special
We live 2 hours from Houston and only come into town for very special things. The Tenors were in town and we bought tickets on PBS, but failed to make dinner arrangements. Using Open Table, we were able to find Lancaster on the morning of the concert and were very pleased with their service. Not only did they let us valet park, but after an excellent dinner, they took us to the concert and came to get us after the event ended. We highly recommend the Lancaster and will visit them again soon! We might even spend the night with them.

Dinner before Alley
We dinned here before a play at the Alley. Always nice, good service and food. But, quite expensive. Lowest priced entre was chicken at $28. I had a nice piece of salmon at $30. Wine list so so with little at the lower end.

Work in Progress
Service very good and friendly, food quality needs to match the prices. Front desk staff extreamly helpful

Great Pre- theater spot
A favorite spot before the show- great food and service, wonderful low-key clubby ambience. Love that we can valet here for the theater. Only complaint is that it can be a little pricey. Still dreaming of the bacon-wrapped figs...

Excellent service. Some of the wait-staff/management have been around for over 10 years. Food was excellent!!!!! We look forward to going back to the Bistro Lancaster again!

Small Intimate Bistro
An intimate corner bistro, with plenty of windows, set in Houston's theater district.
I ordered the Savory Goat Cheese Cake as an appetizer. It had a pleasant, light, goat cheese flavor, topped by a medley of dried fruits and nuts, and surrounded by an assortment of crispy bread chips. Interesting choice.
My main dish was Pan Braised Jumbo Scallops in a citrus emulsion sauce. The scallops were arranged around an artful small island of arugula, peas, fava beans, and asparagus tips. This was a totally delicious plate. The citrus emulsion sauce was delicious and I was tempted to tear one of my dinner rolls into small pieces and "drop" them into the sauce. I highly recommend this dish.
The service was cordial and well timed.

Great Food and Service!
I had the crab cakes which had been recommended to me by the Lancaster Hotel staff, and they were outstanding. My husband had the Chilean Sea Bass, which was outstanding as well. The service was stellar along with the food presentation. We had 6:00 reservations on a show night and were out of the restaurant by 7:15!

We arrived before a play at
We arrived before a play at the Alley Theatre. The place was packed with theater goers. We explained that were not attending the show which was a relief to our server. Accordingly, our service was not rushed and excellent. Great food, great service. The noise level dropped significantly when the show crowd left. If you want a quiet meal, check the playbill before booking. Even with the crowd it was a great dining experience.
7/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
The Sunday Brunch menu is good, the food was good, but we just really like the ambience of the place because it is in this older hotel - albeit renovated. A good place, and very convenient, to eat before the afternoon matinee at the Alley Theatre.
7/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
Exactly what expected
...and we expected good food, but expensive. Without a gift and the final bill would have been 2x that of comparable places in Houston. But the food was excellent. I highly recommend the Risotto.
7/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
Very nice - until it got noisy
I met a friend for dinner at 5:15 on a weeknight. Service and food were both excellent. However around 6:00 it got very loud, and from that point forward we ate and drank quickly so as to make our escape. But there is not better location for a pre-theater meal.
7/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
The time we were there was just prior to a show opening at the Alley, so they were packed since they are right across the street. The food was good but not great. the calamari was overcooked and the caprese looked and tasted like it had been sitting out for a while premade. The servers were wonderful and doing their best even though they were being overwhelmed. they were pleasant and were working very hard. Still, a perfect location for a quick bite before the shows!
7/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food. Small restaurant & it seems the tables are close together so if you had a large, nosey party next to you it could be uncomfortable. We will always go back!

Romantic date night/theater evening
Perfect find for a romantic dinner out. Excellent dinner spot if you are going to see a show or concert in the theater district. Will come back next time when downtown for an event. Beautiful early 20th century hotel, lots of character.
8/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
Decent option before a show
We picked the Bistro because it was close by for a matinee show at the Hobby Center. On this occasion, the restaurant was nearly empty (we'd been before when it was packed). The service was great--very quick and courteous. I felt the brunch menu was a little limited, but we did enjoy our choices of the French Toast, the Eggs Lacaster (their take on Eggs Benedict) and the Crab Cake.

Theater District Dining
If you are looking for a consistently good dining experience prior to a performance in the Theater district, this is the place! This time I tried the cheese filled bacon wrapped figs in balsamic, which were great! The scallops are consistently a favorite. If you dine in the restaurant, their valet parking is only $8 which is a nice bonus!

Theatre Area Mainstay
Slight changes to restaurant interior but generally the same. Food is good and generally consistent but they seem to have added a few dollars to most menu entries. Cozy like New York eateries but this is Texas not Manhattan and the crowd can be a drawback. If you want to eat before a theatre event this is a good choice and in reality, you just don't have that many options so near to Jones Hall seat. Best time to eat here is after the curtains rise. They now have a change seating quirk in which all tables are "pre-assigned" and changing the table the computer selected for you can be an act of a Lancaster god.

Great little bistro!
Enjoyed a festive dinner with friends prior to performance at Hobby Center. Food varied from good to great. My steak was too gristle-y. Others had varied dishes and thoroughly enjoyed them. We will be back!

Bistro Lancaster is a gem! Small and nicely appointed place in the historic Hotel Lancaster. Service was attentive but not overbearing. The food was delicious and beautifully plated. I enjoyed the corn tamale and shrimp. The shrimp were large and very fresh! My first plate was fig with Gorgonzola and wrapped in bacon....very earthy and rich. Give this place a try and you will be delighted with it.
9/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
The Lancaster is great for before theater dining. They are very attentive to matching the speed of the service to the time you have available for dining - they can speed it up or make it leisurely. Their valet will also keep your car until after the theater performance if you prefer. The waiters will remember you quickly if you are regular. Especially good seafood menu.
9/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
New Menu mostly positive change
This is one of our go-to places which is consistently good before the theatre. They have added some good lighter dishes to the menu, including kale salmon salad (which is what I ordered and it was fantastic) and grilled chicken salad. The only disappointment is they have also dropped some menu items, most notable the lamb chops which my husband and I had enjoyed frequently. Their menu isn't very extensive, so it would be nice to have kept the tried and true. We will still come back, as the food, service, and cozy ambience is worth returning.
9/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
The Lancaster is always outstanding: service, food, ambience. Very quiet.

Great pre-theater location
Good food, good location and they have the pre-theater timing down to a science no sweating if they understand when you need to be done
10/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
The service was great and so was the food. We went before the TUTS play and had time to spare. Glad to see The Lancaster back up to great.
10/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
We enjoyed a delicious dinner here before our theater performance. It was very convenient to park at our venue and walk to Bistro Lancaster. As we entered the restaurant, the busy scene had us worried that slow service might make us late, however the wait staff assured us that they'd help us with timing, and we were served promptly, enjoying two courses without any wait. Bistro Lancaster has a wonderful historic clubby atmosphere, and our party of five each enjoyed delicious dinners. We'd like to try this again, when we can spend more time enjoying the experience.
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
Enjoyed a nice dinner with friends. The crab cakes were excellent. Caprese salad was degraded by overly firm tasteless heirloom tomatoes. Salmon and lamb chops were done to perfection and enjoyed. Would appreciate a better selection of moderate priced wines. The coffee had the distinct appearance and taste of instant coffee yet I find it hard to believe a restaurant would serve instant. Perhaps it was poorly executed cafe americano with exeuberant crema? Did not have desert this time but previous experience has been good. Would like to see some new offerings on the menu.

Nice Dinner before Opera
Two other couples, my wife and I had dinner at the Lancaster before Aida. The fried calamari was crispy, came with two different dipping sauces, and overall was about as good as fried calamari can be. Those who either had soup or salad were pleased with their first course. For the main courses, everyone had either crabcakes, sea bass, or tamales and shrimp. Those who had the sea bass the tamales and shrimp were quite pleased with their choices. I had the crabcakes and found the sauce served with the crabcakes to be excellent. If I had to complain, it would be that I would have liked a little less breading and a little more crab in my crabcakes. The wine list is not extensive but has some nice wines.

Before Theatre Experience
Awesome location for before theatre dining. Best Bartender in Houston for martinis. Small and quaint dining area. Hotel Boutique ambience with good service and accommodation for time schedule for theatre start. Variety menu with great food and wine list.

Great location for dinner before a show at Jones Hall, or any other downtown theater.
Great food and service. We are repeat customers, and will definately be back again.

Nice pre theater restaurant
All special requests submitted on open table were met. Very friendly and helpful staff. Second time at the Bistro Lancaster. Same experience both times. Good food and nice place for a pre theatre dining experience. I rated as kid-friendly, but it is a fine dining experience so I would only recommend well-behaved and rested children be taken here. If you're not sure, ask for one of the lobby tables which are a bit more casual.

Lancaster Bistro/Jones Hall
great spot for before Jones Hall experience. Reasonable parking at $8. Concert started at 7:30. Dinner rez at 5:30 for 4 of us made for perfect timing and leisurely dinner. Bacon wrapped date appet was awesome, scallop entree very tasty too. Not crazy about the close quarters of tables (very Euro/NYC) but understand due to sq ft-age and location. Folks were mostly going to same concert and friendly but not intrusive.

We will go back in the next few weeks as the experience was .ni ce..

Cozy and Bright
It was a perfect dinner before a show night at the Lancaster Bistro. Nestled in the middle of Houston's Theater District, the Lancaster Bristro experience was totally convenient AND a gastronomic thrill. The big Diver Scallops were a wonder swimming in a rich, savory, lemony sauce. And the bacon wrapped dates appetizer...all A BIG YUM!

Great spot for per-show dinner
Perfect location. Great food. Repeat customer. Crab cakes are fantastic.

Before the Show
I took my office staff out for a night on the town. Chose the Bistro since we were going to the Alley Theater after dinner. The staff was extra nice and the service was very efficient and fast. Everything tasted great and the desserts were a nice close to the dinner. This is a really nice place for any occasion.
