Nathaniel's has an old world elegance that is in sync with the Hawthorne Hotel. My wife and I had the pleasure of dining at Nathaniel's and would recommend it highly to anyone while staying or visiting Salem.

Never had a bad meal or service
Never had a bad meal or service here. Best deal for Restaurant Week around too, as you can choose almost anything on their menu, as opposed to a prix fixe meal. Choosing is the hardest part, since everything is sooo good!! Already looking forward to my next visit!

Went to Nathaniels for their Salem Restaurant Week 3 course for $25 special. This historic hotel dining room complete with continuous background live piano is a gem! Most Restaurant Week menus are very limited. Here you can have, with few exceptions, virtually anything on the menu. That means, there were 4 different seafood main courses and 4 meat and vegan main courses to chose from. All creatively prepared. Our 3 main courses included shrimp and scallops, swordfish, and monk fish. Appetiser and dessert menues were also broad, fresh and delicious. Varied and not overly pricey wine list. You could pay double in Boston and not have this good a total experience.

Nathaniel's is very good
My wife and I stayed at the Hawthorn Hotel where Nathaniel's is located. It was nice to be able to walk off the elevator and into the restaurant. We were pleasantly surprised by the service and menu not to mention the old world elegance. Very nice experience.

Always a treat
Nathaniel's at The Hawthorne Hotel always lives up to our expectations. The food is creative plus you can order demi portions rather than splitting an entree. The ambience is formal but cozy. Sunday brunch includes live music and a prix fixe option if you want. Dinners are also excellent, as well as, everyday breakfasts.

Delicious meal in a formal setting
We went early on a Friday night and were therefore able to take advantage of a new offering - complimentary mesclun salad and chef's choice of dessert if you order entrees before 5:30 pm. We both enjoyed the very fresh salad and mix of hot rolls with that were brought to our table along with an herb and cheese dipping oil. We then had the beef short ribs and the shrimp and scallop sofia, which were both delicious. Upon a recommendation we ordered the apple blossom for dessert, and that was served hot with vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce - yummy! Our waitress, Judy, was attentive and kept our water glasses full, which was much appreciated. The dining room is formal with a quiet elegance, and live piano music comes later.

A taste of old New England
Nathaniel's at the Hawthorne Hotel is trip back in time (in a good way). Both the hotel and the restaurant have the feel of old New England. The staff are very friendly and attentive without being pushy. The wine list is adequate but not extensive; Vinophiles should look elsewhere. The restaurant also has an adequately stocked bar if you desire a cocktail. The menu is focused. Clearly the chef is intent on executing a few classic dishes very well (which they do). The atmosphere is quiet and reserved (low lights and a live piano player). The t-shirt and jeans crowd or families with small children will definitely feel out of place here. That's not necessarily a bad thing.

My wife and I have been to The Nathaniel twice, each time to celebrate an anniversary, because it's that kind of a place. The dining room is intimate, the decor is pleasantly old-fashioned, the pianist is way above the usual "lounge" musician. The food is excellent (we both had the warm spinach salad with bacon and crunchy chick peas; my wife had the shrimp and scallion dish, I had the braised lamb) but not avant -- you won't find your entree piled into a teetering vertical structure, surrounding with tracks of sauce squeezed onto the plate. The service is attentive, but unpretentious. Overall, this is a great choice for a romantic get-away or a special occasion.

The Jazz Brunch was a great
The Jazz Brunch was a great way to entertain friends. Better yet, was the served brunch from a menu and not a steam table version. White tablecloths also added to the atmosphere. Tables were also set comfortably apart from each other allowing for a sense of privacy.

We were a group of around
We were a group of around 20 folks, and had a marvelous time. The food was terrific, and the wait staff was so very gracious, professional and attentive. We loved every bite--both starters, bread, entrees, and marvelous desserts. Everyone in our group was happy and grateful. Bravo!

Worth a visit
We chose this place for a 70th birthday celebration. The menu had something for everyone. The choices were somewhat standard with some slight twists. Overall, an excellent meal and a classic atmosphere.

This was a very good restaurant
This was a very good restaurant - very small only about a dozen tables. Had a man playing the piano. I felt bad for him and the waitstaff though - only 4 tables filled.

Quiet, Romantic Dinner
The food was excellent and had several gluten free items to choose from. Unlike a lot of restaurants I have been to recently,
Nathaniel's was very flexible in allowing me to pick different sides other than the ones that came with my entree.
The service was excellent and the ambience quiet; my husband and I were able to talk and hear each other while low, beautiful classical music was playing in the background.
This is a great place for a special occasion or if you happen to be in Salem and want a good dinner and some classic ambience.

I took my boyfriend there for a special night out and it was absolutely wonderful. We had a romantic time and the food was delicious, I had the surf and turf and he had the baked stuffed shrimp. Very happy with our waitress and the ambiance was splenid, perfect lighting and the piano player was the icing on the cake.

Went to Nathaniel's for the Sunday Jazz Brunch and it was a treat. The food and service were both very good and they have done a terrific job of maintaining the hotels historical status. The great music on top of a good meal in nice surroundings was just icing on the cake. If you get a chance to go to Nathaniel's don't miss it!!

Good food and great service
Good food and great service from Judy our server, a great place to eat in Salem. We were late getting in from CT. and had to call twice to postpone our reservation and they were very nice about it.
My only comment on a negative is they put apple sauce on top of my pork chop and I can't understand why anyone would do that. The pork chop was cooked perfectly medium rare as I had asked for it and it was incredible! I would eat here again and again, it was just wonderful....

Brunch in Salem
Brunch for 8 was very good - getting there was problematic but that is always a risk - Salem, MA in Oct (before Halloween) can be VERY busy with witches etc. Even with the traffic the food was worth it.

We ate breakfast at Nathaniel's. It was very good, service was great and quick. Would recommend checking it out.

Great night with even better food..
The food and service was exceptional. From the chef's complimentary appetizer to the salads and main course, all of the food was delicious. The ginger bread ice cream sandwich was phenomenal. My fiance got the chocolate roulade, and she said it was so rich and extremely delicious. What a great place to celebrate our engagement!

My husband & I went to the Hawthrone Hotel for our 4 year anniversary/ Halloween breakfast & it was delicious. On the hotels website, it says the resturant attire was "business casual". When we showed up, there were people in hoodies & sweatpants having breakfast. I guess the business casual applies just for dinner maybe? But that was our only confusion. Our breakfast was delicious and I would love to visit again.

We stayed at the Hawthorne Hotel and ate at Nathaniel's for breakfast and dinner. Outstanding dinner and best breakfast I have had in a long time. Would recommend it.

My husband and I had a romantic dinner at Nathaniel's a few years ago during a stay in Salem. We decided to return on this trip and we were not disappointed. We started off the evening with a cocktail in The Tavern and then moved to the dining room. We even got the same table we had on the last trip! The ambiance in both places is charming and reminiscent of the way restaurants used to be back in the day. Lots of dark, warm woodwork and indirect lighting. The food was excellent and we both appreciated the option of having a smaller entree portion. The staff was charming and attentive without being obtrusive. We look forward to our next trip to Salem and dinner at Nathaniel's.
