Awesome food (beware the chairs)
I love this place--I've been there a few times because the food is absolutely outstanding. They always manage to have really interesting, unexpected and brilliant flavor combos that will rival some of the best restaurants in town. But what's up with the chairs? Seriously? You literally have to fight with your body to sit in those darn things. I would be back more often if I didn't have to sit in them. Anyone with back pain--don't even try. There are a few booths, but they are difficult to reserve. And none of the wait staff seems to acknowledge the issue, which is strange. In spite of this, the food keeps me coming back.

Woodsman: A Carnivores Delight
Finally, food for carnivores, but some vegetarian fare too. One of the great spots on Division Row.

What impressed me most was the friendliness of all the staff. As hip and popular as this place is, it would be very easy for them to look down their noses a bit while serving you, but they don't. Everyone who approached us was low-key, warm, and cheerful. The food was very good, if not great. I'll probably go back in a month or two.

Fantastic dinner from start to finish! Loved the bar snacks and the selection of country ham is a must.
8/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
Very engaging & knowledgable
Very engaging & knowledgable waitress who explained interesting food & wine options. Unique & delicious items on the menu, from cocktail & appetizers to amazing desserts! All 6 of us loved our dining experience @ the Woodsman.

Great dining experience!
Ate here solo last Tuesday to kick off my vacation in Portland and all I can say is "wow." From the Broadbent ham plate to the apricot sorbet, this was an excellent meal. I had the roasted trout as a main (suggested by my fantastic waiter), and it was amazing, as was the cream corn I had on the side. I'm from new York and I'd read a coupe of articles about the place (notably in AMEX's "Departures") and decided to make it one of first foodie destinations in wonderful Portland and I'm certainly glad I did! Thanks to all involved. Keep up the good work.

Lovely birthday dinner
We had a great birthday dinner, the food was delish, the waitress was very helpful, the decor is super cute, and our cocktails were fantastic. Not sure what else you could ask for!
8/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
My favorite restaurant in Portland. Great service, quirky (but not weird) Portland vibe, and great food.
I had an odd combo of fresh raw oysters followed by a burger. Everything was amazing. Truly the sweetest freshest oysters imaginable, and a $14 that was worth every cent.
Had my favorite for dessert too, peanut butter cookies from the Woodsman Provisions next door.
8/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food and excellent service but the noise level was deafening and mad it almost impossible to talk.
8/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Tasty, hearty dishes
We really enjoyed the Tavern on our first visit. The combinations were very good and the service was timely and attentive. The meatloaf and trout were well received by our group. The fried albacore was a bit too dry and dense for my tast. Desserts, drinks and appetizers were all delicious.

All in Balance
The Woodman Tavern so effectively balances the various elements at play in a dining experience-- ambience, elegance, sophistication, price, down-to-earth-ness, familiarity, creativity, mood lighting / ability to read the menu, etc. It's just a great place.

One of a kind
Our family visited us last weekend, and we decided take them to Woodsman Tavern because, frankly, there are no other restaurants like it. It's daring without being preposterous, and everything, I mean everything, we ate was delicious. The service is amazing, and everyone had a great time. We definitely will go there again.

Delicious but Noisy
This was my 3rd or 4th time to the Woodsman. As before, the service was superb and the food was excellent and very interesting. Standouts were the trout in crazy water, the meatloaf, and the rib eye. The only downgrade was that the noise level was annoyingly high. We were at a table for five and the person across the table could hear without leaning in/speaking loudly. I hadn't notice an excessive noise level during my prior visits, so it could have been because we were against the wall, or because of the extremely exuberant group next to us.
9/4/2013 12:00:00 AM
Delightfully surprised by the salmon crudo and two excellent salads. They also serve up a mean burger. Medium rare is exactly that--not overcooked!
9/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
It was my first time to the restaurant as I'm new to Portland and I had a friend visiting who knows good food and I wanted to impress her. It did not disappoint! The food was great and the options were great - seafood, good salads, all great for sharing.
From what I can tell - it's very "Portland". Eclectic art on the walls, dark wood booths, the male servers all had huge bears and the women all had tattoos. The service was really great. Had to change the number of people in the reservation and it was not an issue for them.
9/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
Our first visit and had a great time. The cocktails are carefully prepared and delciious. The "ham flight" was quite a trip! I really liked the pickled collard greens which I have never enjoyed any other way. I should have tried the trout rather than the meatloaf. My husband had the BBQ chicken which was delicious and the corn on the cob with honey butter may be the best I have ever tasted. Quite expensive but a lovely evening.

oozing with personality
love this place! second time I've eaten there and the food remains creative, interesting, fresh and presented by servers with opinions. None of the foolishness about "everything is good" answer you get at most restaurants. Servers have opinions and present them well. Seafood is a particular highlight. Wine pricing is reasonable. Ambiance is excellent. Almost hate to give it too much of a good review so that I can get a table when I want one.
Keep it up lumberjacks.
9/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food was excellent, timing was a little off. Nothing serious just a bit of a wait between some entrees. But the noise level was extremely loud, none of us have hearing loss and conversation was difficult. I would consider a week night rather than a Friday night in the future.
9/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
Overall the food was very good. We sat on the street which was great but may not qualify as good ambience. The wine list seemed pricey. The specialty bourbon cocktail was great.
9/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
While the restaurant definitely
While the restaurant definitely had a neighborhood feel, it had a more worldly flair with the food (neighborhood restaurant with four different raw oyster selections!?). Wine list with good selection from different regions
9/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
We ate at Woodsman Tavern for our anniversary. The service was superb, and the food outstanding. My only complaint was the noise level. It was really loud. I could hardly hear the conversation.
The other thing to mention was the WC (water closet). Seeing a few couples come out with smiles on their faces was amusing, although in such an upscale place - really?
9/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
friendly and helpful staff
friendly and helpful staff and very contentious of dietary needs
9/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great, innovative food. Small portions. High prices. Slower service. Great ambience. Delicious drinks.
9/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
the seafood is excellent and
the seafood is excellent and beautifully presented. The service is very good with knowledgeable servers who are passionate about the food. The wine list is unusual and excellent. Desserts are excellent too. The one drawback is that it is noisy so not suitable really for a conversations T least not at night. Still, I will return whenever I can.

One of Portland's Best
I've been cruising the Portland dining scene for 7 years looking for a go-to place that over delivers in a humble way and the Woodsman Tavern fits this bill. This was my fifth trip in 2013 and I have recommended the place many times. The raw bar is excellent, the service is the best I have had in Portland, they mix a mean cocktail, and the food has layers of well integrated flavors, and the wine list has more than a few hidden gems. I am not much for submitting detailed internet reviews of places but my dining experiences here make me want to give props where props are due.
10/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
One of the best restaurants
One of the best restaurants I have dined at in Portland in quite awhile. The staff is somewhat "Hipster" but that doesn't distract from their outstanding knowledge and service. Between appetizers, first and second plates we tried seven different items and all but one were truly outstanding. High quality food, very nice presentations and above all, great and unique flavors makes this one of Portland's gems.
10/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great Service! Food Very good.
The service here is the best. The restaurant was quite busy but the staff was cordial and efficient. Nice touches like folding your napkin if you leave your table. Everyone was upbeat, which indicates to me that they are adequately staffed and well treated. This makes a big difference in a restaurant experience. These days, the bar is quite high in inner SE for food. Everything we had was very good. My only disappointment was that the online menu did not match what was offered. I wanted to try their chicken marbella.

Themed dining experience transcends
There is so much good to say about this place comes from the thoughtful choices made by the well trained and intelligent staff. My foodie daughter and I sit in the middle of the room on what looks like old style school chairs. First impressions were that we'd be in the middle of the hubbub. Not so. The tables are spaced precisely so that the staff and customers flow freely about the room. The noise levels never approached noticeably loud. The seats were very comfortable. Like you came into a space that was both public and private at the same time. Now on to the food. Trout was the best ever. Steak was wonderful, ah but the baked potato! The wine list extensive, all thoughtfully chosen to be food friendly. Sadly, I've hit my character limit.

I will go back a million times
As a new resident of Portland, this was one of the first places that I tried (as it came highly recommended). I have now been 3 times and loved it every time. The menu is totally different and everything has so much flavor.
We took our parents there this weekend and the restaurant was incredibly helpful in getting us set up in a corner that wouldn't be as loud as the rest of the place. That being said, the restaurant is loud. Not idea for those who have a hard time pushing out background noise. Fortunately the parents loved the food - so who needs to talk?!
All in all it is always a good time. And Joe is the best.

Living up to good reviews.
I've heard a lot about the Woodsman Tavern over the last several months, and finally had the chance to check it out. I'm looking forward to finding the occasion to go back to try more. This restaurant has a classy, laid back vibe, with a great drink list, built for the adventurous bourbon drinker like myself. I have to say the 'pickleback' was an interesting and spicy delight. Food was delicious; Staff was helpful and knowledgeable; Atmosphere was fun. It was a great night and lived up to the good reviews.

Great Portland Dining
As out-of-towners from SF Bay Area,we were looking for a signature Portland dining experience, and found that at the Woodsman.
My wife and ishared multiple dishes, and each was prepared perfectly.
Burrata cneese over sauteed vegies, serve in a hot skillet was wonderful, as was the seared halibut we had for an entree
10/11/2013 12:00:00 AM

The food and service are quite good here. It's just too noisy. I had to yell to my companion across the table to be heard.
10/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
Thank you for a wonderful brunch our friends loved it. The noise level was live and not too quite. It was perfect for our 2 yr old and friend's 4 yr old. Good food and great service!! Our favorite Sunday brunch spot!!!

Execution & Quality
This restaurant was everything the reviews made it out to be. Outstanding food all around. All of my guests said one part of their meal was, "The best ever". Pits been awhile since I've encounter such a great value.
11/3/2013 4:00:00 PM
Food was excellent and they catered to my dairy and soy free diet. Halibut crude was especially delish!
11/4/2013 4:00:00 PM
I am not really a foodie, but everything at the Woodsman was delicious and prepared and presented perfectly. We have been there several times and it is nice to see the same wait staff. I highly recommend -- in fact, this is the place we take all of our out of town visitors -- it is so Portland in the best way possible.
11/13/2013 4:00:00 PM
Grab someone beautiful and snuggle up at the bar. Have your bartender or server take care of the ordering and you're in for a treat! Try the halibut. Such tasty. So yum.
11/16/2013 4:00:00 PM
Nearly perfect in every way
This is great find. That little section of SE is becoming quite a foodie Mecca. This should be a great staple on anyone's lost. The service is impeccable and our group of 5 was treated as royalty. Oysters were unique and awesome and everything else, the same. The chairs aren't the most comfortable in the world (I know because I own them as bars tools at home) so I elected to sit in a wood paneled booth. Decor is great. Modern industrial but very warm somehow.
11/16/2013 4:00:00 PM
Rustically stylish, including waiters with beards and beers with a pump tap. Excellent food. My husband and I went here for our 15th anniversary. Really enjoyed the beet apple salad with cashew butter. I had fresh cod and he had the trout. Large portions of protein, could have used a few more brussel sprouts.
Reminded us both of our grandpas. Mine was a phone pioneer and his was a logger.
Relaxed, generally quiet atmosphere except we were seated next to a loud guy.
I'd definitely go back.
Stumptown Coffee and Woodsman Tavern

Went for anniversary dinner. Place was full, almost too noisy to hear our own conversation. Not over-exuberant but very energetic. Food was good, service was attentive. We received complimentary glasses of champagne in honor of the anniversary, a nice touch. Wines were generally out of our budget (as with most places anymore in Portland), but we got a Bow & Arrow red that was nice & just $24, and worked with both dishes. I had ling cod with brussels sprouts. Very mild, cooked thoroughly but gently; it peeled apart easily for eating. It sat on the sprouts and a very nice sauce; the presentation was thoughtful. My wife had steak, cooked to her preference (medium well), and it was also well prepared and tasty. We hope to return soon.

Almost everything was done at a professional level. Amazing n creative good combined with top notch service to create an experience I'll remember.
11/22/2013 4:00:00 PM
I have been in the restaurant business for nearly 30 years, mostly as an executive chef. It was my first time there and I took my girlfriend there for her birthday. The food was amazing - the best ingredients, expertly prepared. The waiter was attentive and knowledgeable about the menu, the drinks...everything. I have been telling everyone about this place and how great it was. Some of the reviewers have complained about the noise level... Well, yeah, it is noisy when it fills up. Is that a bad thing? Not to me. It's the sound of satisfied diners packing the restaurant night after night... Just go!
11/22/2013 4:00:00 PM
It's too close!
This has become our neighborhood place, within walking distance. Our reviews are somewhat redundant at this point. We have trouble driving by here to go anywhere else since we are never disappointed with our experience at Woodsman. A new item this time was the Duck/Chanterelle stew - complex and just simply yummie.
11/28/2013 4:00:00 PM
We brought some friends from out of town for an experience in Portland. We thought the Woodsmen Tarven would be a wonderful experience for them in terms of food and services and ambiance.
We arrived 15mins earlier and was showed to our booth seat immediately. We had to wait a little for the staff to take our orders. We ordered the Grand Seafod platter and two salads and a side of polenta. The Polenta was average - but the seafood platter was simply awesome. It has the freshest oyster, jumbo prawns and mussels, juicy scallops with orange and fennel, buttery uni seasoned with lime and soy sauce, and half a crab.
It was a great feast fit for 4. We finished the meal with two desserts - a chocolate pie and maple panna cotta. Wonderful!
11/29/2013 4:00:00 PM
Really nice time. Had friends in from out of town, and we all had a blast. Delicious food and drinks

Out in the Woodsman Tavern
The food is what you'd expect if you were at James Beard's place after hours.
Very, very good.
It's also an odd mix of ingredients.
And our server was great; attentive and knowledgeable.
12/3/2013 4:00:00 PM
I had heard from various sources that the Woodsman was overpriced and the food only mediocre, but this, thankfully, was not at all true! I freely admit that I am not a hardcore foodie, but I have made the rounds in Portland and know my way around a quality dining experience. The drinks and food were excellent, the prices were affordable, the service very satisfactory, and the mood was great. There is a lot of attention to detail in everything at the Woodsman. I highly recommend it.

High Quality Food and Service
Just had my first meal at Woodsman Tavern and I wouldn't hesitate to go again. The meal and service was excellent. My reservations were on a Monday night, which I think made for a more mellow energy among the diners. I prefer that. The food was great, wine and cocktail list very good and the servers very attentive. I also feel like the quality of food was commensurate with the media hype and the price. (I can't say that for many high profile Portland restaurants.) As for ambiance, the noise level is often an issue for me (i.e. talking loud just to have a private conversation with your table mate). It was quieter than a dance floor, but louder than family dinners at home.
12/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
And it was fantastic! The ham appetizer, our bitter greens salad was simple but perfect, and the rib eye was perfectly cooked. Our server also got us to order less than we planned, knowing we were getting too much, showing that our experience was more important to him than our check average.
