Great food - no heavy sauces
Great food - no heavy sauces or pre-processed Mex here. Margaritas are salty and sour and just right!

Favorite Mex on the UWS
Just love this place - have not had a bad meal here yet,
Queso Fundido Rocks - good to share with friends (but do it right with Chorizo and Flour Tortillas)
Guacamole is great
I love the Tampiquena - but you need to like skirt steak
Any of the fish specials have been awesome as well.

Cafe Frida is phenomenal!
Cafe Frida is PURE BLISS! In a city with abysmal Mexican food, I have been searching for a place that can hold a candle to Texas/Mexico Tex-Mex and Mexican food. I won't have to search anymore now that I have discovered Cafe Frida. Our dinner of chile poblano, the tampiqueña steak with rice, beans and an authentic quesadilla, and the guacamole in the molcajete was heaven!! I can't wait to get back to try more things on the menu. It's delicious and authentic. The place is also cute and the service is excellent. It's small so make sure you have a reservation.

Cinco de mayo
Great time for cinco de mayo! Mariachi band and everything. Good food, good margs

Very reasonable and delicious!
I was very pleased with my dining experience here. We had 6 people who all had drinks and ate and the bill only came out to ~$50/person. For NYC, I was shocked at the quality of food, service, drinks for the price. Food was delicious. I recommend ordering a bunch of tacos and maybe one or two entrees and splitting it for the group. Lamb tacos were wonderful. My only complaint: having to pay for chips and salsa at a Mexican restaurant. At the same time, for 50$ for everything we ate and drank, I'll take that cost any day.

This was our first time dining
This was our first time dining at Cafe Frida and we had a very pleasant experience. We were seated immediately, our server was most attentive and the food was delicious. Our meals were not overwhelmed with sauces and cheese as happens in many Mexican restaurants. The food was delicious!!!

This is not the run of the mill Mexican restaurant. The food is very good and the presentation is very professional. I will return.

Terrific. We enjoyed the 'salsa
Terrific. We enjoyed the 'salsa sampler' picking 3 from the large list if varied salsas. And lamb tacos were delicious!

Mexican with Authenticity
In a neighborhood where most places are less than meets the eye, Frida offers solid, authentic fare at decent prices. The atmosphere is better than your average "south of the border" joint, but I suggest sitting in the front room, which is sunny and airy. And do NOT miss the guacamole--among the best in the city. This is my go-to spot when visiting the Natural History Museum or Delacorte Theater.

Great food, friendly service, slow
Food was delicious (spicy guac was exceptional), but clear your schedule when you go, service took forever. Also, solid drink menu if you like tequila or mescal, but if you don't you're pretty much SOL.

a mini vaca to mexico
genuine ambience, friendly staff and delicious food was just the right tonic after a days work. ready to go back!

Great Mexican food. Saw two celebrities checking in before us. They sat us in the front room which was less decorated than the back room that had dim lighting but it was so busy we didn't asked to be seated somewhere else. The noise was very loud and was hard to hear the other person sitting across from me. Aside from that we got the pork tacos and shrimp tacos. Shrimp was much better!
Ordered a margarita that was strong and did the job.

The hostess welcomed us with a warm professionalism. We were promptly seated at a table for two in a glass enclosed area facing the street. Tables were cramped. The server was cordial and offered valued explanations of specials and menu dishes. Service was quick (we had not finished our appetizer when the main course appeared), but the pace of serving settled down once the main course was set.
The food was tasty: Flautas crisp and plumb. The Mole sauce was delightful, though there was a bit too much overpowering the enchiladas. The side dish of zuchini and corn in Creama de Arroz was disappointingly flat. Desserts were sweet and satisfying.

Great Mexican food
The blood orange Margerita was splendid, the food was great and good service. A bit noisy, but being a European, every restaurant is noisy here ;)

Great food, cocktails and ambiance
We had a delicious dinner. Wonderful homemade guacamole, delicious queso, and tacos and fajitas on homemade corn tortillas. The highlight though was definitely their house mojito--made with tequila and one of the best I've ever had.

Don't miss the Guacamole
Great neighborhood Mexican spot - enjoyed the guac and homemade tortillas . . .

As soon as we arrived we were greeted by a friendly hostess who took us to a nice table on the upper floor. The waitress arrived shortly after that and offered us drinks she then told us the specials of the day. As our appetizers we had guacamole and tamales which were very good. My boyfriend then had the tampiquena which was outstanding. It was cooked to perfection. I had the chiles en Nogada which were very good. For dessert we shared the cocunut flan and the tres leches ( three milk) cake. The waitress checked on us often to make sure everything was going well. I would definitely recommend Cafe Frida. We had a great experience and look foward to dining there again.

Great Mexican and Spanish food.
Upscale restaurant offering more genuine Mexican and Spanish food. Very small restaurant, so reservations are essential. Menu is great. Have dined here several times and have always enjoyed the entrées. Guacamole is a must as appetizer.

We were seated over 30 minutes later than our reservation. The manager ultimately apologized and provided the table with free guacamole, which was a nice gesture. Beyond that, the food and service were quite good, and I would certainly go back.

I love this place!
It is a must when I visit NYC!
The food is ALWAYS great and authentic!
9/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
The guacamole and fish tacos were tasty but we were a bit squished in a corner table and it was a Sunday night so live music was LOUD (for my taste anyway). Would definitely return but more likely for lunch when it is less crowded.

Delicious and Authentic
I grew up in Texas, going to Mexico fairly often as a kid. The food at Cafe Frida is outstanding. I'm just glad I stumbled upon it walkin down colombus avenue one night. The prices are NOT cheap, and you have to pay for chips and salsa, but the cheese is authentic and the flavors are great. If I want a treat, I head on over. It can get busy, though, so a reservation isn't a bad idea!

Fun, Loud, & Great Wait Staff!
Fun, loud, busy place...plus good food too! Staff was really accomodating when dealing w/ my friend who broke their ankle and in a wheelchair. Although not at first. We were originally told, "No room, too busy" even though we had reservations. Once I explained that she could get out of her wheelchair and that it folded, they were very helpful. Once we were seated, had great service. We were the last table to leave and never felt rushed by the staff. Great 70's sugary pop music played all night..which we really got a kick out of! The wait staff/bus boys were really helpful getting the wheelchair into the cab...happily taking pictures for us..and made us laugh after a long day. For that alone...I would go back again. :)

Best Mexican Food in NYC
This is the best Mexican food I've had in NYC. The guacamole appetizer was excellent! The Hibiscus margarita was amazing.

Lovely, cozy dinner
My first time at Cafe Frida was an outstanding experience, and I'll certainly go back whenever I'm in the neighborhood. The food was delicious---I just ordered 2 appetizers and a drink, and they were lovely (though they didn't really challenge the chefs). The small, cozy room was a delight, and our server was outstanding welcoming and professional.
11/12/2013 4:00:00 PM
Cafe Frida has become our neighborhood place. They are always so friendly when we come in and very accommodating. Bartenders are extremely welcoming (remember us), as are all of the employees. Guacamole is delicious as is the enchilada suiza. A must for the UWS! We prefer the Columbus location to the Amsterdam location because it is more intimate and we've found that the staff is friendlier.

Great food & Service, but loud
We were a group of 6 and we all enjoyed our food. The only complaint--its just too loud. Even when speaking to the person adjacent, we needed to repeat ourselves several times. But other than that, great place.
