Cozy tavern dining
An 18th century tavern feel. Fireplaces to warm each dining area. Very accommodating staff. Noisy when dining room is full. Food is tasty and prepared with imagination. A meal from small plates is easily done. Creative cocktails. Good beer choices.

Keeps getting better
I wont give this an outstanding for food because I dont want it to catch on more than it has - I will never be able to get in! I wish there were enough space here to write a real review. When they have duck, it is always wonderful. The chicken leg confit is a good substitute when they are not serving it. The short rib - on a long bone - is excellent as are their fish dishes. For those wanting something less, the do serve burgers from meat from the wonderful local blue moon farm. Dont fill up on starters, save room for dessert. The servers are all terrific, cheerful and friendly but not in a bad, annoying way. They seem to really love the restaurant and care about the clients.

Love the rustic atmosphere
Love the rustic atmosphere with the blazing fireplaces...yes, more than one! Warm and cozy with a nice steady flow of people. The kale and beet salad was to die for and I had a wonderful pasta and scallop dish. My husband was also quite pleased with his dinner. The wine list had just the right amount of choices to make a quick decision. I initially thought we were in for an expensive evening but there are some very reasonably priced meals on the menu, as well. Definitely an eclectic and eccentric menu with a French twist to it. Going back for more! Sam, the Chef, is really make a name for herself here that will follow her anywhere. Great night!

Great place for a cozy late
Great place for a cozy late afternoon lunch or early dinner by the fire. We have been pleased consistently over the last 8 weeks with three visits. The staff couldn't be nicer and the food is a winner with something for everyone. Reasonably priced too!

Wonderful find in Litchfield
a great little treasure in the country setting. Love the attention to every aspect of the food, the local sourcing, the blending of unexpected ingredients and the charming staff that relish describing every detail of how a dish is prepared

Delicious, creative food
The restaurant is cozy, probably not suitable for parties of more than 6 people. We entered to the intimate bar with the extremely friendly bar tender and enjoyed seasonal ramp matin is. So good! There were many other creative cocktail options, utilizing fresh produce, as well. The dinner choices continued the trend of fresh, in-season options like soft shell crabs, fresh brussel sprouts and rhubarb. Portions were very generous and we were too full after salads and entrees to finish a shared dessert, as nice as it was. Service was very attentive and engaging. Prices were very reasonable for the quality of the food. This place is a gem to be re-visited!

into the woods for a special affair
My man and I were out to celebrate his 24th birthday. It was raining when we went, so they had the fireplace aglow. they gave us a few options of where we wanted to sit. The first floor dining room is connected to there bar (which we will be going to for a drink soon!). The bar and dinner section was full of friends enjoying drinks, food and conversation. The chef and servers came around to ensure the quality of everyone's experience. It had a very homey and familiar feel. The food was absolutely to die for. Fresh bread and butter, yucca fritters and fresh cocktails to start, seared scallops over a summer salad and roast chicken that melted in your mouth. We were too full for dessert, but they served a celebratory drink, a very nice touch.

The service was excellent, our drink order arrived potent and prompt. We enjoyed the apps and main course which were very tasty.
The menu was limited but enticing enough to make a enjoyable selection.

Loved this place
We had been here when it was the Toll Gate Inn a and loved so we were a bit trepidatious about what it would be like, but we loved it. There were some very unique dishes, and they had a good selection of wines by the glass. Our server was great. We'll definitely go back.

My book club has met several
My book club has met several times at Mockingbird Kitchen and Bar. Each time we have extremely pleased with the service and menu selection. Each item on the menu as well as specials are a culinary mouth watering dilemma. Our server and the cook's recommendations couldn't make our dinner choices any easier! I would highly recommend this restaurant.

You will not be disappointed!

wonderful father's day treat
Great meal again... Tom (father) practically licked his plate! Pork chops! I love my fish taco's ... with wine and dessert ... just perfect.!
6/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
This was truly an outstanding dinner and atmosphere. The food was delicious, with the extra care and attention to flavors and palate pleasing! The service was beyond outstanding. We certainly will return.
6/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
Have eaten here several times - Love the pub ambiance, wait staff is terrific, food presentation and tastes outstanding, menu diverse and interesting. Love the fact that you can just have a burger or a complete, elegant meal.

Great romantic get-away
Had a fabulous meal, with all courses. Everything on the menu was special; wonderful blending of Asian and American influences; varied choices. Every course was fantastic. Wine list is a little limited, but the wine by the glass that we selected was excellent. The only complaint we had was that the old historic building (which was quaint and romantic) lacked the proper ventilation to keep temperature down; we were quite warm by the time we finished dinner.

Mockingbird Kitchen Really Sings...
What else is there to say about the fresh, bright, original and delicious dishes....a hint of orange maple dressing on arugula over a warm peach /pecorino salad? Pork chop so tender you could've cut it with a spoon? Red snapper with celery root puree, broth just a whiff of citrus, buttery oil, and tender local baby green beans? A kitchen crew who can cook, waitstaff who sparkle.... low key soundtrack of perfect blues....Ingredients organic or local, fresh and beautiful.... this old spot has been re-born and WE LOVE IT.....

Inconsistent but worth a visit
I have now dined here three times and each experience was different in terms of food quality, service and organization. The most recent visit was a disappointment as compared to the one just two weeks prior. An appetizer I enjoyed on my first visit , falafel fritters, was unavailable on my second and third visit despite its known popularity. It is a small menu but two entrees were also not available. Sunday may not be the best day to visit. The cocktails are creative but the only non-alcoholic beer choice is still O'Doul's, an unacceptable choice in a good restaurant. The service is generally unobtrusive but instantly available when you need them. I'll return in hopes of an experience more like my first and second visits.

Charming setting, terrific food
A wonderful choice in LItchfield County; dining selections are modest but wonderfully prepared and service/setting is delightful

More Fabulous Than We Had Heard!!!
I made a late Friday afternoon reservation for 4 for Saturday at 6:30. On Saturday afternoon, I called the restaurant to see if we could add another person - no problem!!!
The oysters from Cape Cod and Mystic were the best!!!
Two people had the swordfish special, 1 person had the salmon, 1 had the pasta primavera and the 5th person had the chicken. The flavors of all the dishes were perfectly blended and tasted wonderful - clearly an outstanding meal.
We had brought 2 bottles of Prosecco and ! bottle of Cote de Provence - and we were only charged 2 corkage fees (we pointed this out to our waitress - thinking she had made a mistake - who stated there was no charge for the 2nd Prosecco since we used the same glasses).
This place is a gem!!!

We have eaten here several times. We love the rustic ambiance, fine service and wonderful food. There are always interesting
specials so the menu does not get old.
7/13/2013 5:00:00 PM
We ate here while staying in the area for the weekend. The food was absolutely delicious and the service superb! The restaurant was rusticiicly charming. We will definitely return.
Thanks for a great evening.

Food great, desserts a chef
Food great, desserts a chef specialty, yummy! Portions just right; appetizers, salads, desserts generous, entrees filling but not giant. Local ingredients highlighted when available.
Wine list ok, but wait staff could use more education on the list (overheard waitress saying Schramsberg "is a German sparkling wine" yikes!)
Dining area in an old colonial, looks cozy and authentic, but seating a bit cramped and uncomfortable.
Worth the trip for the food, which is the reason we eat out! We will continue to patronize on a regular basis!

Well-prepared and creative cuisine
We went for dinner Wednesday night and were the only people in the dining room. While the food was very good, especially the papardelle with corm and mushrooms, we were disappointed the restaurant was so dead. Will give it another try if we are in town in the future.

Great gem in Litchfield. Eclectic menu, carefully crafted food, and fresh ingredients. Waitstaff friendly and attentive. Bartender very skilled. Overall high quality.

This restaurant is outstanding. The food is great and service as well. It currently is located in a very old inn, but will be moving to the Bantam Inn. It is definitely worth chef Samantha and her crew to their new location.
9/19/2013 5:00:00 PM
Very enjoyable time there
Chef Sam's dishes are great, Barbara was a excellent waitress, and even the water-glass filling person was courteous and attentive. The wine sampling was a really nice touch until we found one we liked with our meal.

A special intimate setting
This was the 2nd time here and they do not disappoint, the atmosphere is truly romantic, the service is outstanding, the food is extraordinary prepared by the chef Samantha. Her unique perfectly seasoned dishes are to die for, even the salad was over the top. We celebrated my wife's birthday, a champagne complimentary bottle to start off the evening, the chef checks on you now and again to see if your happy. The bartender made us the perfect martini's and once ordered with the waitress she came over to our table to ask how we preferred them. When it came to our after dinner coffee we ordered with Bailey's, well there was a slight delay, I believe they ran out but the bartender made her own mix, better then what comes out of the bottle.

Delicious Food, Quaint Location
Everything we ordered was delicious. The Kale salad was as good as any salad I've ever had. Service was impeccable.

Excellent Food and friendly serive
This was our second visit to Mockingbird. Our first experience was a wounderful surprise, one of the best dinners we have ever experienced. The staff was very freindly, they perfectly balanced friendly and attentive service with respect for our private conversation. We decided to return for my wife's birthday and we were equally impressed with the chef's creations. Fresh ingredients and a real talent to combine ingredients into innovative twists on common dishes like chicken and halibut make this restaurant really special.

Our favorIte restauranti
We've eaten here many times. The restaurant is set in a lovely old inn, although it's soon moving to a larger venue. The food is consistently outstanding, the service excellent. I particularly like that I can bring my own wine for only a $10 corkage fee. The crispy kale salad is excellent, and well often have a salad and a couple of appetiZes as dinner. Considering the quality of the food, the prices are reasonable for the area.

ANOTHER GREAT TREAT
EVERY TIME WE COME WE SAY THIS WAS THE BEST AND EVERY TIME IT JUST GETS BETTER! THANKS AGAIN..JOAN AND TOM

This was an excellent dinner, just right for a cool evening. We have been to Mockingbird a number of times and have never been disappointed. The food is well prepared and the staff very friendly and attentive.

Very good review
Food was excellent. Looking forward to Mockingbird moving to new location.
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
We have never been served anything other than an outstandingly excellent meal at the Mockingbird. Chef Sam Tilley works magic with locally sourced meats and vegetables. On our last visit, we enjoyed Berkshire pork chops served with delicious delicate turnips. A curry cauliflower soup to start was fabulous. Desserts are rich combinations of many flavors. We plan to follow Sam when she moves in January (2014) to her own building in nearby Bantam which is rapidly becoming the foodie hot spot of NW Connecticut. And yes, she will have a fireplace and blazing fire at the new place also. just like at the current building.

A Real Gem….
Sam and her staff hit the nail on the head….everytime! The food is amazing, the staff are professional but extremely kind and warm. The place is charming with three fireplaces roaring all winter. My only wish is that I would have found this place earlier. The care that is given to shining the glassware and flatware was impressive. My boyfriend and I dropped by one Sunday afternoon only to find that we were an hour early for their 5ish pm opening. Sam welcomed us in….she lowered the lights at the bar, poured us a glass of wine, made sure the music was on and then proceeded to be charming while she polished glasses and managed the restaurant. Can't wait to visit them at their upcoming new digs at Bantam Inn. Love this place!!! You will too!!!
11/16/2013 4:00:00 PM
Great Food, Very Loud
The food here is really good. The service, however, needs improvement--very pleasant and willing, but not very professional. The place is very loud and there is inadequate parking. However, this may change in January when the restaurant moves to new quarters in Bantam. If you want a great meal and don't care about hearing each other, come here.
11/22/2013 4:00:00 PM
A gem of litchfield county

Waitress was very knowledgeable and Right On Point with each request or question we threw at her!
Food was fantastic can't wait to try their new location in Bantam!
Hope they bring the same Chef, Waitress & Bartender along!

Everything about Mockingbird Kitchen is perfect. Great standard entrees with unique specials every time we visit. This time, we started with a beet salad and an appetizer-size turkey potpie, both wonderful. My wife had the salmon, which she’s had before here, and can’t help having it again. I had a rack of venison, which was superb. Our desserts were a pleasant surprise, and we’re glad we got our own and didn’t share. The service is attendant, yet not clingy, and wonderfully friendly. Perfect.
11/29/2013 4:00:00 PM
Great spectrum of food and drink
The Mockingbird's proprietor, Samantha Tilley has a great feel for both casual and more formal dishes. You will find many fascinating comfort food favorites, as well as flavor combinations you don't see everyday. The bar always has interesting drinks on special, and they have a very credible wine list. When the restaurant moves into their own private digs in Bantam in 2014, it will only get better.
