Lamb chops are very tasty. Service is a bit slow but server was very nice and helpful with us choosing our dishes since it was our first time there. Alcoholic drinks weren't so good. Watermelon margarita only tasted like watered tequila. Rice casserole was awesome too.

Tamarind is unique among Newport
Tamarind is unique among Newport Beach restaurants. The fact that the food is perfectly balanced, elegant and surprising is enhanced by the venue's fire & ice atmosphere (c'est urbain), indoor/outdoor seating and open kitchen it offers a unique dining experience.

We were vacationing in the area and I remembered reading Jonathan Gold's review. So glad I did! The food was wonderful. We'll be back in August and I'm already looking forward to our next dinner.

Food was delicious and setting
Food was delicious and setting was beautiful. More vegetables would make selections more interesting, and more fusion-like...the lamb kebab was described as inlcluding greens and julienned vegetables, but only had greens. The meat platter offered garbanzo beans as the "fresh vegetable of the day," which made the balance of items too starchy (platter also includes rice, naan, and lentils.) A green veggie would have been a refreshing variation. The chicken and lamb were great, as were their individual sauces.

Elegant Indian Food
Simple elegance and very interesting twist on some of my favorite Indian dishes and some additional choices. Definitely worth a visit.

we had a wonderful meal and
we had a wonderful meal and a great time, staff was friendly (maybe a tad unorganized). Food is DELICIOUS! my old standby Indian restaurant in Newport has gone way down hill so now Tamarind will be my new favorite!

Our favorite and upscale too
The subtle nature of Taramind (we dined early) was most pleasing as was the introduction of the various flavors (cumin, mint, fenugreek and curry) from the papadum to the chocolate ice cream was super! We especially enjoyed the banter with the wait person, all are terrific but Charissa was a real delight.
Portions amazing and pricing just right...go there now!

A Nice Find
Unique and original interpretation of Indian food. Beautiful presentation. Very tasty. Decent portions. Reasonable prices. Cocktails are very original.
6/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
Out of the already limited vegetarian options, only one entree was available on a Tuesday evening. Being that the restaurant offers an Indian cuisine, I would like to see more vegetarian choices on the menu that are actually available when guest order.

Always tasty food
Been here a couple times before and have never been disappointed!

Food good, but some suggestions
Been coming here regularly since it opened. Tasty Indian dishes, nice location, great staff. Lately have noticed some subtle changes. One, they have scaled back on the number of items on the dinner menu. Hopefully, they will move the other direction. Two, the bartenders seem on the young side, not as versed in cocktails as you would expect for this crowd. Only two brands of vodka. Stoli and Ciroc...Ciroc? Really? Finally, my pet peeve, they used to carry a wide selection of large format Indian beers (22 or 16 oz). Love Indian food with traditional Indian lagers pair so well with it. Flying Horse, Blue Mountain, Taj Mahal. They now carry only one Indian beer (Taj) and only in a 12 oz size. Guys, you really need to re-think this approach.

Large Party Handled Well
Our daughter requested Tamarind for her graduation dinner celebration. 10 of us attended. Our server was prompt with taking our orders and getting the food to our table. The food was very tasty and some was exotic with it's Indian inspired flavors. We come here often with our family & the kids all love it. Recommend for a meal when you are wanting something different with class.
6/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
excellent, as always
I eat at Tamarind about once a month. The service is good and the food is excellent. Perhaps what surprises me the most about this restaurant is that it's rarely crowded--it's definitely an overlooked gem in the OC.

Beautifully Prepared Indian Cuisine
What a nice addition to the OC dining scene. I could come back here many times, there are so many great things on the menu. Don't miss the Goat Cheese Naan, it's to die for. Many of the small plates are fantastic and you could make a whole meal out of a sampler of them. The main entrees are VERY tasty, appropriately spiced, and beautifully presented in little copper serving dishes making for easy sharing around the table. The service is attention, but not stuffy, and our server was not afraid to share her favorites. The wine list is nicely paired with a number of whites with the right level of acidity to stand up to the Indian spices. the red selection is similarly paired up nicely with Zins, Grenaches, Malbecs that complement well.

The best Indian restaurant
The best Indian restaurant in Orange County in an elegant setting and featuring a fresh, creative menu.

What a great surprise!
The interior design was really unusual and beautifully done.. On top of the service. Food was absolutely delicious and they have some incredible drinks. Highly recommend this to anyone. Will be coming back.

Not enough true Indian flavors.
Not enough true Indian flavors. Too much fusion not enough authenticity, Very limited bar selection. Good ambiance and service.

If you can't make it to Mayfair
Interesting fusions of Indian with just about every other cuisine you can think of. They don't all work (the quinoa is just dull-why not serve the salmon with poha or idli instead?) but enough of the combinations are sucessful to make Tamarind worth a visit. The kitchen takes a lot of care and some of the traditional dishes stand bright and sing. The cholas are chock full of fresh flavors and the naans are just about perfect-maybe the best I have had in the US (if the tandoors were wood-fired instead of gas, the naans would be as good as any I have had in India)...

Tamarind, a Califiornia-Indian take
Tamarind is an upscale sort-of Indian restaurant located in an upscale shopping mall overlooking Crystal Cove. If you're looking for authentic Indian food, go elsewhere, but if you want a Southern California take on it, this may be your place. Very attractive restaurant and friendly servers. Blissfully quiet. Attractive outdoor dining if you prefer. Very pricy.

Terrific food, service, varied options for atmosphere and seating..

Not your mother's Indian food
The Indian inspired food here is delicious and beautifully presented, but it is not traditional. There is not a lot of heat, curries take a back seat, and it is not inexpensive but if you like Indian spices and the moisture that a traditional tandoor provides and price is not a huge factor, this is a great place to dine. Their late night happy hour offers some delicious signature cocktail and reasonable priced appetizers.

Delicious, Fresh Indian Cuisine
Went here for lunch during the week. We had the Butter Chicken Naanwich and the Butter Chicken, Lamb Platter. Both were very tasty and food presentation was outstanding. I enjoyed the platter because it gives a little taste of everything--meat, rice, daal, beans and made with heavenly spices.
Also ordered the Mango Lassi which I thought was refreshing (a little pricey at $6 since it is on the smaller side but equally good). Another option is to go for the Mango Kulfi for dessert, which was refreshingly light and fruity and I would order on my next visit. Perfect place for any occasion.
All together, it was an enjoyable meal and I am glad that I finally tried Tamarind, had been on my list for way too long!

Fine Indian dining at the beach
You would expect bigger prices in Newport Beach. We ended up dining twice in a week. They have a few tables outside, a few under a big awning ( liked that best) and a lot inside. We had chai tea to start with warmed milk and honey ($4) date naan (could have been dessert (I think $7), steamed bowl of spinach (can come with cheese - second time got it with this not worth it no taste and double the price- delicious without it), and the two main vegetables dishes one with spicy tomato sauce and one with creamy mild sauce- both great, tasty, not overlooked. Had pistachio ice cream for dessert! Better than rice pudding (i know there is a term for it) it is creamy but ice cream - WOW!
8/15/2013 5:00:00 PM
Delicious food yet some dishes extremely spicy for my taste.

A twist on authentic Indian food.
I am not a big fan of Indian food but really enjoyed this restaurant. The friends we went with have traveled to India and are very familiar with the authentic style of cooking. They found the restaurant to be a little Americanized, but good. I was happy with that because I can't handle too spicy food or the brown sauces that are traditionally used. I would recommend this restaurant to try something new!

Overall A Great experience!
Great time. The place was nearly empty which was no indication of the quality of food or service. The restaurant itself is gorgeous we dined in the outside area, which honestly could be revamped and be so much nicer. Our server was really friendly and did a great job recommending food. The wine we ordered was phenomenal and something we had never tried before. I was so happy not to see the same boring wine list that every other restaurant has. The Lamb dish was as described and fantastic! The manager came over and talked to us a bit and was really nice. Just really genuine staff. Will definitely be back. I wish there was one in L.A. Not sure Newport Beach people understand what they're doing here, but I hope they get noticed more.

Very enjoyable experience
Excellent service. Waitress provided useful suggestions and was attentive and pleasant. Flavors were on the mark. The level of spicy heat is medium but chutney variations are available to heat up the dishes if desired. Altogether a charming restaurant with a touch of sophistication. We will return.

Enjoyed the experience
We have had lunch and dinner here a few times now and this last dinner was by far the best experience so far. Our server Chris knew the menu and offered some excellent advice in addition to superb service. We shared the lamb roguish, chicken biyani, some naan and eggplant sides. Can also recommend their wine list, very well thought out given the food choices. We had the chateau binca pinot which mated perfectly with our entree selections. Don't forget to try the rotiap and chutney selection too, it's like chips and salsa but with an Indian twist!
I think you will really enjoy it if you have an open mind and are looking for something off the OC foodie path!

The specials are always great...the Tandori grilled chicken delicious.

superb Indian find
A spur of the moment craving for Indian food lead me to this gem in Newport Beach. Everything was outstanding The goat cheese naan was impeccable and the lamb chops divine. A butternut squash soup was delightful . The chocolate lava cake was the crowning achievement!!

Went to celebrate wife's dinner with the family. Food was very good - not too spicy which the kids enjoyed. Wish there were more dishes to select from on the sharing menu.

Nice ambiance but mediocre food.
We picked this restaurant for a Sat night date night venue and the place definitely met our needs for the evening. The lighting was perfect, the location is amazing, and the service was impeccable. However, both of us being foodies we did not particularly enjoy the flavors so much. The caveat here is that we have had a line of amazing experiences with Indian food back when we lived in Seattle (Chutney's located in the Wallingford neighborhood of Seattle is single handedly worth a $250 round trip ticket to the Emerald City!) so we may have been spoiled slightly. Nonetheless, if you are an Indian food connoisseur don't set your expectations too high for this place.

Best food I've ever had! Whoever they have back in the kitchen cooking needs a raise. I was blown away. Out server Juan was outstanding too. Always had a smile on his face and kept out drinks full, even if we were a tough group to please. Everybody definitely needs to check this place out for some exquisite Indian cuisine

We don,t eat India style food often, but this was excellent and a nice change of flavors.

We really enjoyed our visit to Tamarind. The lunch sampler gives you a good taste of the dinner menu albeit in much smaller plates. None the less we walked out comfortably stuffed!
The manager Mallory stopped by to ask how we were enjoying our lunch, a nice touch. In conversation, she also let us know that they added some new dishes to their dinner menu. Cant wait to try them the next time we stop by for dinner.
All in all a wonderful Sunday lunch!

My husband and I had an amazing dinner this past weekend. The goat cheese naan and scallop appetizers were melt in your mouth amazing and the sea bass prepared in the tandoori oven was the best sea bass either of us has ever tasted... and we've tasted a lot of sea bass! Highly recommended!
