They don't make 'em like this
They don't make 'em like this any more. Small, crowded, noisy, threadbare. But the scene is fun, the food is from the '60's but surprisingly good. Better go now, because the Santa Monica City staffers are scheming to shut the place down.

We stumbled upon this through open table and had no idea it would be so wonderful. Rich in history, attentive service and great food all tucked away in this Santa Monica gem. We're looking forward to returning and bringing others.

The unique and rich history
The unique and rich history just oozes out of this place.... We spent 3 hours here and it felt like the blink of an eye. I'd highly recommend going here. It's pretty wild to know that Frank and Dean and most of old Hollywood used to call this place home. The manager, Juan (I think that was his name) is so inviting and welcoming. The staff, too, was really accommodating and even let us peak into the secret back room. You have to go.

Chez Jay always good.
One of my Santa Monica favorites.... I usually get the seafood salad, but my wife & I decided to order steaks. I ordered the bacon crusted pepper steak as seen on tv's "USA of Bacon" & my wife ordered the waitress recommendation "Butter Steak". Both were really good, but we both liked the butter steak better.

From the outside this doesn't
From the outside this doesn't look too appealing but is in a very good area of Santa Monica. However from the moment you walk in the door, it is a very good experience. Staff are welcoming and friendly. We had booked, requesting a booth and this was ready for us at the requested time. Service was excellent, food very tasty and the atmosphere is just great. A small restaurant with an equally small bar but a gem. Wouldn't hesitate to return if back in Santa Monica.

Some things never change ,and
Some things never change ,and that's good for chez jay
Still a great local watering hole. Food is average to good ,but it's nice to find a place where they don't nickel and dime you for salad and sides.

Best Westside Spot for REAL People
Almost every other Westside restaurant is chock full of phony baloney people spending exorbitant sums of food and drink about which they have no concept of quality. At Chez Jay you get simple, quality food in decent size servings at decent prices, served by normal people. The drinks are good and well priced. The small draft beer selection features all quality suds (Anchor Liberty Ale, Goose Island IPA.....).... Even their house Cabernet is decent, especially for $17 a liter....(my wife and I are wine snobs to boot)....If you're a carnivore, enjoy the beef....It's decent, though not up there with Fleming's in quality, but it's also not $40 for a filet either. Personally, I always get the Sand Dabs

What A Beach Joint Should Be
Chez Jay has long been a Santa Monica institution. There is a reason for that. The menu is limited, but the steaks are first-rate Service is friendly, yet unintrusive. The shots are honest, and when you get right down to it, the joint is as comfortable as an old shoe. Chjez jay will be evolving so as to take its place in the new Ciovic Center Park that is being built, but the plans call for additions to, rather than replacement of, this classic neighborhood gem. In the meantime, Chez Jay is a living embodiment of the Santa Monica beach bar scene before the Yuppie invasion. And did I mention that the steaks are first-rate? The thiord-generation of theFiondella family will make sure that you have a meal that you will long remember!

Great Dining Experience
Chez Jay's is a historical establishment and has been in business for 53 years. The food and service is excellent. We dined there with friends 2 nights in a row, and a great time was had by all.

Met Mike, one of the owners and his son, who was home for the summer from college. Great people, Mike has many stories from his 35 or so years there. It is a hole in the wall, but they do make you feel right at home.
I had a martini with three olives, Caesar Salad and the Angus steak with truffle oil special that evening. Good, but not recommended for those on low cholesterol diets. I was trying to channel my inner Dean Martin. I did succeed.
Supermodelgirlfriend had the mahi-mahi and she enjoyed it. A good time was had by all.
I think we might have caught a glimpse of Marilyn Monroe being escorted by the Secret Service down to Peter Lawford's beach house, for an assignation with JFK, but don't quote me on that...

Classic Santa Monica Dive
Great neighborhood place. Peanut shells on the floor, great, friendly service, awesome "dive" ambience. Food is just OK, but adequate.

Beachy without tourists or attitude
A friend and I met for lunch the day after the 4th of July. It was quiet, friendly, the perfect place. The service was laid back but not indifferent; when I was struggling to decide between a burger and a Caesar salad, the waiter suggested ordering the burger with the salad as a side instead of fries. Perfect solution. My burger was spectacular -- from the pretzel-roll bun to the crunchy-crisp lettuce. Friend had a daily special, pork loin, that was also terrific. I hadn't been to Chez Jay in years and now can't fathom why we're not there every week.

Enjoyable Dining Experience
I have dined at Chez Jay (lunch & dinner) several times. Chez Jay is known for many things, but probably the two most prominent features are its friendly atmosphere and service, and its good food. Anyone and everyone is made to feel welcome for dining or those just in for a cocktail or glass of wine. Classic seafood, steaks and chops are served with recipes that rekindle fond memories of just great food. Chez Jay is a local favorite and has been in business for more than 50 years.

Laid Back Charm
Outstanding bearnais sauce, well-prepared filet mignon, true "red-checkered table cloth" cloth (not plastic), decent wine list, and a nicely prepared pre-dinner Manhattan suggests fine dining. The peanut shells on the floor, simple, efficient but friendly service, and a beach-like dress code suggest otherwise. Casual but a lot of fun. And very good food.

A Great Steaks for a good
A Great Steaks for a good price. The Service is excellent! My Mother used to bring me here as a child for my Birthday Steak dinners and I loved the Green Goddess salad dressing and its still the best I have ever had.

A Neighborhood Landmark Unchanged
First time here in many years. Hasn't changed. Positive in all respects. Food is good (not gourmet quality, but quite OK). Prices are reasonable. Would definitely come back. Good place to take out of town guests.

We had a wonderful evening
We had a wonderful evening in this original restaurant from 1957. Service was great. So glad we finally decided to try it!

Great Food and even greater value
Chez Jay reminds me of an old, comfortable blanket--not in best looking shape, but does the job. We went there for lunch, so cannot comment on night scene. It has a 70's look, complete with vinyl tablecloth, diner-type seating and sawdust on the floor. But if you are not not pernickity, you will come away with a wholesome culinary experience. I ordered sole and my wife ordered salmon and both were fresh, perfectly grilled and tasty.
Chez Jay has been around for a long time and I am glad it is in our neighborhood. Will definitely try it out for dinner.

Thanksgiving fixed menu
We enjoyed out Thanksgiving for two at Chez Jay and have no regrets. It was a delicious fixed price menu that we enjoyed immensely. Our waitress was lovely and the whole experience was memorable for all the right reasons.
