Best meal in Georgetown, top 10 DC
Exceptional dishes, exception wine and cocktail menu, exceptional service. Can't go wrong. Duck confit, short run pasta, soft shell crab, burger, buratta and arugala salad and many more all amazing.

Not for kids
The crab cakes were outstanding and the Mac & cheese is a must !

A wonderful spot with great food n very good wine. Don't miss; it's a gem amidst the
Tourist restaurants of Georgetown. Highly recommended and it doesn't have to be a
special occasion but a fine meal out. The Chef/Owner Phillip is a delightful host.

SO good! do NOT miss!
we went with two friends to unum on a busy thursday night in july (every table was occupied). the food was delicious - the kitchen efficient - the wine list robust. literally the only thing that lacked was our server who was good - just not great. the branzino was perfection - i am going back for it again soon!! be sure to request the table in the front window - especially on a gorgeous night when the windows are wide open it's a special spot.

First Time At Unum in Georgetown
I went to the former restaurant in this space for years and enjoyed it for the food, wine, ambiance and wondered if the new restaurant in this prime location in Georgetown would satisfy as much. I read one review and heard from a neighbor who went to Unum -- both positive input. I'm happy to say that going there recently, for the first time, I was very satisfied with the food, wine, ambiance and service. Soft shell crab appetizer was superb. I will go back again and again.

Great variety of small plates!
We really enjoyed the variety of courses and small plates. We managed to get three courses -- (1) cheese and cured meats, (2) appetizers, and (3) half servings and sides -- without getting too stuffed. I felt the like the dishes were very affordable for what we got, and the wine by the glass were well organized and thoughtful.

Thrilled with everything!
I was extremely happy with the food, decor, service at Unum. I wanted a Georgetown restaurant to take my 20 year old son to; and he has a more sophisticated palate as I'm a personal chef. We like healthy, clean food, lots of vegetables & interesting selections. Unum had many so many things we wanted to try, it was hard to narrow it down. We loved everything and I thought the quality of food was a notch above for the price. We had a table by the open window to the street and it was perfect. More of a casual atmosphere. If you like a more interesting menu, try Unum. I loved it and so did my son.
7/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
My wife and I have had two wonderful meals at Unum. The menu is diverse and creative that would appeal to all palates. They also offer almost all of their entrees in half portions, allowing diners to enjoy more of everything. It's more than a neighborhood gem, it's a DC gem!

What a find!
We heard Unum referred to as a "gem". What a great description! We enjoyed a pre-theater dinner with the windows open on a gorgeous summer evening. Our waitress was very helpful and gave us accurate feedback regarding amounts to order as we sampled from all over the varied menu. The jalapeno jelly with charcuterie was a great surprise - not too spicy but added a little kick. Chorizo stuffed squid/octopus(?) was a delicious new combination. Shortrib pasta was velvety and divine! Lamb shank, beignets, cheeses (did I mention we sampled the menu?) were also great. We have nothing bad to say. We will most definitely return and anticipate another joyful experience. Well done!

An oasis in Georgetown
Good food, good service, a welcome quiet spot in the heart of Georgetown.

Unfortunately I have to say
Unfortunately I have to say my friends and I were slightly disappointed in the food. It started of great with fresh bread accompanied by a cilantro spread and herb butter. The appetizers were a slight downgrade; we had the "meatballs" (i.e., mushroom sub) and the heirloom tomato salad with fried cheese. Both were tasty but I think we might have set our expectations too high.
Our entrees were actually our least favorite course. My wife and friend both had the branzino and the gnochi, and they both agreed the branzino was a bit fishy and not quite as meaty as they'd hoped. My skirt steak and short rib pasta were good, but not spectacular. The best dish was the crabcakes, and in particular, the corn it was served with.

Best addition to Georgetown's
Best addition to Georgetown's dining scene in years. Inventive menu with lots of types of choices: entrees as half-orders, vegetable side dishes, as well as nice selection of salads, appetizers, meat, fish, and pasta dishes. Very reasonably priced for strength of cooking.
8/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
Delicious, carefully thought out plates; great ambiance with attractive and dark nooks and beautiful wall art and lighting.

Restaurant week was great
Unum's restaurant week menu was a great deal. The food was delicious and we got a lot of it. Service was great. No complaints
8/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
consistantly excellent food
Went for restaturant week and the food was excellent. Full menu. Had ceasar salad (one of the best around) and small plates for my main courses - soft shell crab and crab cake. yummy. Excellent. Perfect soft shell. Yummy chocolate desert. All this for $35.00! Other favorites here include the ecellent duck. One of our favorties in Georgetown where we live.
8/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Delicious food, fantastic portions!
Loved the meatball appetizer from restaurant week - best thing I tasted all week! Loved the chimichurri spread and sage butter that came with the bread. Loved the portion sizes and variety (we were allowed to pick two entrees from the menu). My husband and I ordered 4 different entree items to taste. We thought the pork loin, crab cake, and the soft shell crab were quite good but the short rib pasta wasn't very flavorful or memorable so I am giving this review a 4 instead of a 5. Still, I was quite pleased with dinner. Would definitely visit again.

What a find!
Great, friendly service. Comfortable and cozy. Food was terrific both times I ate here while on a biz trip. One of the best crab cakes I ever had. Creative and beautifully delicious beet salad.

The décor and ambience were
The décor and ambience were lovely. The staff was attentive and pleasant. The food was very good. I really liked the option for 1/2 plates for most entrees, it made it easier to try an appetizer, salad, entrée and dessert without feeling guilty. I would definitely go back and suggest it to others.
9/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food was very good
We enjoyed the crabcakes, the heirloom tomato appetizer, branzino, and the pasta with meat dish. Especially liked the fact that you could order 1/2 entrees - made it great for sharing and trying many of the dishes. The server was very attentive and helpful with menu selections.

2nd time I've made a reservation
2nd time I've made a reservation via OpenTable for my wife's birthday, and despite indicating that in the comments/notes to restaurant, nothing happened (despite being restaurants where I know gestures are made). I don't really care, as it's not for the sake of getting a freebie, but I just wonder if restaurants even look at or see these notes in the opentable reservation.
If I have to call them to explain such things, then I might as well call them and make the reservation that way and not via the internet.
Food itself was great, minus a fermented tasting side sauce with the chorizo-stuffed squid. Beignets were tasty, though not as impressive to me as other diners. Shame they got rid of the mint ice cream.
9/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Two times a charm!
I should say both times a charm! Enjoyed a fine meal with my family months ago. Had an equally fine time dining solo. Superb, professional staff. Both times the chef/proprietor visited me at the table. Super creative and yummy, and healthy!, food!
9/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Unum has been a great add to M street. Try to get an outside table if you van...only two tables....or sit at the bar. Great spot. Phil and Laura have a great little restaurant here.
9/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
The appetizers were great.
The appetizers were great. The dinners we had were less great, but good. We got there right when it opened and sat by the open window on a beautiful day and that was wonderful. Great service and nice atmosphere.
9/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
Awesome spot! Loved it!
Really cool/creative dishes AND its delicious AND it's not very expensive at all given the high quality. Fantastic service, great ambiance. Upscale/nice restaurant but laid back (not "stuffy" at all). Took my bf here for his bday dinner. We love to go out to the top restaurants in DC and were pleasantly surprised and both really loved this place. Definitely recommend.

Wonderful Food, Fantastic Service
We had first rate cocktails and a lovely meal at Unum. We enjoyed the prosciutto appetizer, the Caesar Salad with parmesan custard and the AMAZING burger. The service was excellent, too.

Food was excellent with subtle tastes and lots of choices.

A little of everything
The food was all really well prepared and the menu is arranged to allow even a couple to sample a wide range of foods. Small starters, half entrees, and a la cart sides made for an interesting tasting menu. The starters were amazing (chorizo stuffed squid and shortrib pasta) and set a high bar that the entrees could not quite match, despite being very good.

Fabulous all-around meal
Our server was outstanding. The food was delectable. The wine options more than adequate. Even dessert was sublime. Our only complaint was that we arrived to a nearly empty restaurant and were seated at the table by the kitchen (really this only bothered two of the four of us). I wouldn't have cared if you stuck me IN the kitchen; I'll be back. This was a lovely find.
I had the gnocchi, which I HIGHLY recommend. We also snarfed up (can you call yourself a foodie and use the word "scarf?") a hangar steak, the boneless short rib pasta, and the branzino. I ordered a side of the brussels sprouts (the only thing I would not re-order. not bad, just a little bland). We tried the beignets and sorbet for dessert. Outstanding all.
10/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
Wonderul combination of flavors.
Wonderul combination of flavors. Well presented and professionally served. Ambience bery good. Somewhat noisy (probably the loud table next to us. This is a true neighborhood gem!

Great Birthday Dinner
We had a wonderful romantic birthday dinner for two, which began with a complimentary glass of bubbly. Our server was wonderful; she provided excellent recommendations off the menu, was appropriately attentive, and a fun personality. The oyster starter was very good - unexpected preparations and two portions of each was a pleasant surprise. We shared the pork, scallops and gnocchi small portions - each was wonderful, great balance of flavors. Great wine list. We look forward to coming back!

gem in georgetown
Found this while in town for conference. What a treat! Delicious and inventive food from apps through dessert!
10/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great little find
This was a fun find, in that the menu was varied just enough and offered half portions for everything, which was great. I think the beet salad is among the best I have ever had.
11/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
Lovely decor; great space for a table of 5 away from the high energy of the front of the restaurant. Food very tasty, with a nice selection but a small enough menu that it is clear that the chef can oversee everything. The food is beautiful on the plate and the service was unobtrusive but present. An all-around treat.
11/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
Intimate and consistent
This place is an usual find, particularly in Georgetown where Big and Loud and forgettable food is the usual norm. The food is consistently good and I'm pleased to see my old favourites on the menu when I'm in town from London. Having said that it would be good to see an occasional new item jump off the page. The staff are friendly, if sometimes a tad lax but always charming. The chef (and owner) comes out to say hi from time to time and clearly cares about his customers. The short rib pasta is great, a meaty deep flavoured dish, made with fresh pasta and root vegetables. The wine list is good, again some old favourites there too with some nice American wines on the list.
11/3/2013 4:00:00 PM
Took some out of town friends there for a impromptu dinner. They loved the place and the food. Our waitress Anastacia was very helpful with some of the questions we had since one of the dinner guests was pregnant and could not eat certain things.
11/7/2013 4:00:00 PM
The food at Unum never disappoints. During our most visit, our group gave rave reviews to everything from the burger to the sesame-crusted scallops. I would describe both the food and the atmosphere as "casual elegant." The atmosphere is a combination of intimate, modern, refined, and friendly -- a difficult balance to achieve in my view.
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
The food at Unum is the big reason for eating there. It is delicious and inventive. The appetizers and the small plates make it easy to taste several items, all very appealing.
11/11/2013 4:00:00 PM
An excellent dining experience, with outstanding service and ambiance.

Great date night
I took my boyfriend there as a surprise and he loved it. The atmosphere is very intimate with the dim lighting, warm colors and small tables. It's narrow restaurant, however we didn't feel cramped. The service was excellent. Our server wasn't over doting and he let us take our time. He also made us feel like we were important. A lot of trendy large restaurants in DC act like you should be happy you got a table and you should hurry up so they can flip it for the next person. No, this felt more like fine dining in how the server acted, but without the high prices for the food. We only spent 84 including tip. We ordered 2 apps and an entree to share.
11/14/2013 4:00:00 PM
Great spot, owner-operated
Met the chef/owner during dinner. Real gem of a place. Highly recommend.
11/15/2013 4:00:00 PM
Small space but packs a punch! What a great find UNUM was for our son's birthday dinner. The food was excellent. My husband and I both had the pork loin dish and it was great! I initially wanted the Branzino but they were sold out of it that evening. The dessert (ice cream and sorbet on cake crumble) was very good. The chocolate and mint ice creams were our favorites. It was fun watching walkers pass by and curiously stop and look or turn around to view the menu outside as if, they too were surprised to stumble upon this little restaurant in Georgetown. Will definitely go back!

Dinner for Four
Four of us ate at Unum on a busy Friday night. We had all been to Unum before, and enjoyed it greatly. This Friday night, we found the food, service, ambience to be outstanding. Unum is a lovely restaurant, with a delightful menu, that offers a creative range of dishes, including half dishes that allow some of us to order one of the delicious appetizers along with the entrée. I had the beet salad and a half dish of scallops, both of which were superb. Three of us ordered different desserts, which were shared and greatly enjoyed by all. We also ordered a very nice bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon.
I highly recommend Unum as a special restaurant.
11/21/2013 4:00:00 PM
Small space, small plates
Unum is a relatively new establishment on the old streets of M street in Georgetown. The interior is small and cozy (recommend a reservation especially for parties over 2). The service was excellent. The food was quite good and arrive quickly. The wine was seemed a bit overpriced (especially for the domestic names). The apps are not really portioned for sharing and the half plates are exactly what you would expect. A great spot if you want a smaller, high quality meal. If you have a big appetite there are probably other places in the area that would offer more bang for your buck $.

Fun little place in Georgetown DC
Enjoyed a lovely evening at UNUM . Atmosphere was busy with a neighborhood feel. Cocktail menu is quite expansive and interesting but we both opted for wine by the glass which allowed us to try a few different tastes. Our table was one of two in the window alcove which was perfect. Menu had great choices and I loved that they had small and large plates on offer for the main course. I had the branzino which was delicious and my husband had the gnocchi which he enjoyed. The oysters to start were good, nothing wow , have had better but they were presented nicely. My favorite was the dip that came with the bread! ....I could have had a bowl of it! I would recommend unum as a nice neighborhood place with good food, good staff reasonable prices.
11/22/2013 4:00:00 PM
UNUM is a great spot. Very, very cozy restaurant with perfect low lighting to enjoy a nice, romantic meal, or, with 2 or 3 other couples. Food was terrific. Cheese plate was adorned with perfect garnishments, beet salad was excellent, and the short rib pasta, just a tad over-oiled, had great flavor and texture. The Indian-spiced lamb shank was very good. Highly recommend this place. Very nicely done.
11/23/2013 4:00:00 PM
Try the charcuterie!
We had the truffle salami, chicken liver mousse and some cheese. Very tasty especially with the accompanying cornichons, ginger jam and onion marmelade.
We had the Indian lamb shank and the short rib pasta. All very well prepared with delicious sides vegetables.
The service was impeccable throughout and wines that pleased.

A Phenomenal Find
Unum was unexpectedly delectable! Starting with the bread and the spreads to the starters and entrees, one could not have asked for more perfection. I had the Branzino and my guest had the short ribs pasta. The Branzino was seasoned perfectly, the right amount of salt and pepper and the right amount of crisp to the skin. I am usually not a fish skin eater unless the skin is crisp, not fishy and seasoned well. All three requirements were met and done expertly! I tasted my friends short ribs pasta. Simply delicious. I higly recommend Unum to foodies. You will definitely be impressed.
