The Dressing Room chefs manage to do a wonderful thing to food -- enhance it, dress it, fancy-it-up-just-enough- without ever overpowering the food itself. The veggie platters, salads, and entrees were all fantastically prepared and delicious.

Have eaten here several times--pre theater. Always good ambiance but food pretty marginal. They have new menu and must have new chef as all meals outstanding on recent visit. Complete turn around...

The food was very good, with salad items from a nearby farm, much grown organically, and very fresh and delicious. There were small plates available, and lots of choice.

worth a visit
We chose this restaurant because it's next door to the Playhouse. Turned out to be wise choice as it was drizzling. Menu is interesting and our party of 4 enjoyed our dishes. Service was attentive and our waitress was helpful and knowledgeable about the menu as it was our first time at the restaurant.
7/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Loved the food ther and service was good. Their kettle Mac and cheese was out of this world!! And tomato salad, yum! Love that they are all in season and local ingredients. Options of small to medium plate is great for tapas style dining!
7/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
The most exceptional food, menu;
Just an unbelievably fun, delicious menu; extraordinary people.
And wines/draught beer to suit such a festive dining experience.
7/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
Always a good idea!
The fresh food and low key service combine to make this not only comfortable but like eating a special meal with friends every time.
7/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
My one complaint is that the service got a bit slow around desert - we had let the server know at the outset that we had tickets for the 8pm show, but we were brought our deserts at ten to eight and had to abandon them to make the curtain.
7/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
Thank you Mr. Newman
This restaurant adjacent to the Westport Playhouse is just the place to go right after the theare crowd has entered the theatre. It gets nice and quiet and the room is just so inviting. The food is really fresh and very, very good. The concept of small plate appetizers followed by medium sized plates leave you more than satisfied without feeling you have stuffed yourself. The servers are unobtrusive but very knowledgable and helpful, The wine list won't knock your socks off, but the pricing is fair with a good range of bottles. All in all it's just a great place to have dinner. The only caveat is that if you come after 8 some dishes may not be available since the restaurant is absolutely packed during the pre theatre dinner slots.

Great Food in an Organic Desert
There are not many restaurants in Fairfield County that sport high quality organic and small-farmer-sourced ingredients (my forté as a farmer and food lover), and you pay for that fact here. The food is very very good, and the simple menu is designed to accentuate the naturally rich flavors of the ingredients - very well.
I found the portions slightly small for the price and I wasn't alone in wishing for just a few more bites to feel fully satiated.
The chicken breast was divine, and the tomato soup simply delicious.
I did not have any dessert but I regret that deeply, as the menu was loaded with fabulous options.
Overall this is a great option in a (very wealthy) county that has a surprising lack of good food.

one step from perfect
One of the best menus I've seen lately. There wasn't one item on the menu that I didn't want to try. Atmosphere is inviting, non-pretentious and comfortable. It was very easy to settle in and begin to peruse the menu and take in our surroundings.
For the most part, our food was very good to exceptional. The service was nice, but not as sharp as I expected. Even though the atmosphere is noticeably casual, even for the prices, top notch service would make the experience complete.

We finally were able to visit
We finally were able to visit this restaurant and were very pleased with the food and service.
Though our servwer was very busy she was attentive but not over-bearing.
The food was excellent, from ther beer sausage and pech salad to the surf and turf and rabbit ragout...one small item is that the noodles in the ragout should have been cooked just another minute or two as they were a little too al dente.
Our desserts were also quite good.
It is rare we have dessert as portions are overwheklming at most restaurants but it was nice that this was not the case this time.
8/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
Set adjacent to the local theatre house, this wonderful dining spot is a must visit for anyone who loves fine dining. From the meals prepared with locally grown foods to the charming romantic rustic setting, this restaurant has it all! The place was bustling even for a week day night. We look forward to returning and sampling any dishes they have on offer.
8/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
Every time we dine at the Dressing Room we experience outstanding food, friendly staff, fabulous music on Friday nights and just one of the best dining experiences in Fairfield County. We love it there and are never disappointed.
8/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
The spot is charming, the waitstaff friendly and knowledgable. The food was delicious. It helped that it was a beautiful day. I would definitely go back.

First Time Visitors
My guests and I came for dinner before the play because of the convenient location. Service was excellent. We enjoyed a relaxing glass of wine and the friendly atmosphere. Each of us had a mini-burger and special salads. We deliberately saved room for the double chocolate bread pudding and the s'mores. Decadent treats!

Wonderful time at the Dressing Room
Our second visit, Anniversary Dinner last year also - wonderful !
We always come on Friday night, the music is terrific, Melissa Newman was perfect !

Healthy Food That's Fit to Eat!
I often dine at The Dressing Room and the chef creates some memorable dishes on a regular basis. They offer a variety of local, sustainable and organic food so you never feel like you're filling yourself with food additives. This week I had "New Bedford Scallops Surf & Turf" that were out of this world -- one of the best dishes ever. It's offered as a "medium bite" but it's an ample amount of food for a meal. I'll continue to choose The Dressing Room as often as I can.
8/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Ambiance rustic & romantic. Waitstaff solicitous & helpful. Food delicious & inventive with intense flavors from the basil martini to the double chocolate bread pudding. Will definitely return.
8/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
One of the very best in Connecticut
You will never be disappointed in the quality of the food. This is Fairfield County's finest.

Music and more
The Dressing Room is adjacent to The Westport Country Playhouse. If there is a performance at the playhouse, get a reservation prior to the end of the show or it gets crowded quickly.
We like to sit at the bar and eat so had great food and a great spot to enjoy the music from the house band, "House Dressing" featuring the chef, the manager and invited guests. Great fun!!
8/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great desserts & excellent Service
The squash and zucchini pasta is simply squash and zucchini cut like spagghetti with a fresh red tomato sauce. The potato soup is a puréed potato soup. The cold lobster plate was slightly undercooked and chewy and was overwhelmed by a huge portion of fingerling potatoes to make up for the small size of the lobster. All of the aforementioned dishes were cooked well but tasted rather bland. The meatloaf was moist with a fresh red tomato sauce but the garlic mashed potatoes lacked any garlic flavor. Perhaps the dishes are intended to be prepared simply without much seasoning but I prefer dishes with More complex flavors. The chocolate bread pudding was awesome. My wife had the berry crisp which was excellent. Service was exceptional.
8/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
Pre-theater convenience and organic
They are in the same building as the Westport Country Playhouse, around the back, and sharing the parking lot. People may go there for other reasons, but for us it is perfect when we are seeing a play. Somewhat limited menu, but it does change a bit depending on the season. Very high quality organic ingredients, almost all from local producers. Great staff.
9/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
Good night out
My wife and I went there for our anniversary. From the start we received nothing but courteous treatment. We were seated quickly and began to peruse the menu. There was quite a bit on the menu, but we finally decide on their "spoon" salad and macaroni and cheese as their appetizer and the mini burger and Rabbit Ragout.
The salad tasted amazingly fresh. The Mac and cheese was robust with thick cheese flavor. The mini burger wasnt that mini and packed a lot of flavor, not as juicy as one would like, but still good. The rabbit ragout was presented beautifully. It was a good combination of different flavors.
Overall a good place to spend a quiet night to eat good food and catch up with the one you love. Great wine selection.
9/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
It's a keeper!
What we ate:
Appetizers, nice assortment of cheeses but served without crackers. A bit disappointed
Tomato salad. Excellent.
Zucchini squash "spaghetti". In a red sauce was good but would have preferred withou the sauce.
Dinner, chicken pot which was hearty with a tasty crust and filling
Salmon very nicely prepared
Tile fish which was a special was also very good
Dessert, shared a peach cobbler which was ok
The wait staff is very good and attentive and explained the different dishes even telling us where it came from, how it was prepared, and what it ate or how it was grown. We were amazed.
We would definitely all go back.
9/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
Plan on returning to dine and see a play in October. We can not wait to celebrate our anniversary at The Dressing Room! Ambiance was great and the noise level very lowI

Coming from NJ, meeting family from CT. Favorite place to meet. Feel good restaurant with farm to table choices.

Amazing flavors and great
Amazing flavors and great local/sustainable foods! Seasonal American food at it's best.
9/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
reliably good restaurant
For a special occasions we think of Dressing Room. Chopped salad is consistently excellent, always surprising with unusual herbs; the striped bass dish was delicious. The two desserts we sampled (bread pudding and the fruit crisp) were amazing.
9/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Charming place, nice country
Charming place, nice country ambience. The food was good and the live acoustic music was a nice surprise.
9/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Cozy and delicious
We walked in afraid the place would be stuffy or too hoity toity given its reputation but were immediately greeted and treated like family. The food only surpassed service and congeniality of the staff, which is to say it was savory, unique and thoughtfully prepared.
9/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
Always fresh, always consistent
Nice to enjoy really good American food for a change. Dressing Rooms hits on all counts. Nice every season.
Try it! Great staff, well trained and pleasant.
10/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
Service would have gotten rated better if the right soup came out and we didn't have to ask for things a second time we ordered the first time. The waitress didn't write anything down and also was not the most attentive.
10/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
A down-to-earth restaurant serving exceptional food.

What 'wonderfully' prepared homemade food that simply melts in your mouth....
10/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
Due to its location tight
Due to its location tight next to the theater, if you have tickets for the Westport Playhouse, the Dressing Room is your best choice. My only complaint was the closeness of the tables to each other.
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
Dressing Room Consistently Good
I dine regularly at The Dressing Room and enjoy the "healthy" take on interesting meals. Some are better than others, of course, and sometimes I'm absolutely thrilled, other times it's just OK. But I do enjoy going there and will continue to support the restaurant. It is pricey, though.
10/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
This place rocks!
Food & service are always excellent. It's eeally become a frequent favorite.
10/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
Loved loved everything about the food. "To die for" is what we said as I left. Service was excellent. Did feel our table was a little too close to the one next to as I couldn't push my chair out fully to get up, but other than that, had the best dining experience one could ask for. Well done Dressing Room!!
11/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great live music on Friday
Great live music on Friday nights. Alternates Friday with two types of music: pop folk type music on the mellow side with singers. The singer and jazz trio offers something more sophisticated. Really good singer, Melissa Newman, does jazz, blues and some American songbook. It's real jazz, not cabaret or show tunes and you can talk and eat while listening. It has a warm cozy club feel. The bar is so inviting.

Great Food & Service
Food was very very good, reasonably priced as well. Service was very good and attentive
11/15/2013 4:00:00 PM
As far as I'm concerned, The Dressing Room is the only pricey restaurant that makes me feel like I'm UNDER-paying. The space is warm and homey. The staff are knowledgeable and accommodating. The food is good and attractively presented. We didn't feel rushed (and ended up staying 3 hours). This was our second time visiting for a special occasion, and will continue to recommend.
11/20/2013 4:00:00 PM
My husband and I had a most pleasant Thanksgiving holiday dinner at The Dressing Room. We both had a traditional turkey entree with stuffing, although there were several other interesting choices. We also enjoyed fresh salads and great desserts .. and tried Newman chardonnay, which was new to us and added to our dining experience. The casual, rustic atmosphere suited us just fine ..and the service was very attentive without being intrusive. We are looking forward to returning to sample more menus and seasons!
11/27/2013 4:00:00 PM
We went for thanksgiving and it was amazing. The stuffing was the best I've ever had. My girlfriend had the meatloaf, and she ate every thing on the plate. The rosemary caramel homemade ice cream was outstanding, I could have eaten that by the pint.
we will be going back again to try the regular menu.
11/27/2013 4:00:00 PM
If price is no object, the best
Rosemary & Caramel together in Ice cream. Chocolate beer. Alsace wine. Sauces to match your duck or rockfish and enhance its taste. Excellent vegetables with each plate, and the opportunity to eat with stage and movie legends, even if not in flesh, in spirit. This is Paul Newmans restaurant. And yes Joan Woodward still comes here. Expect if dining for two to spend at least $100. But you get what you pay for.
11/27/2013 4:00:00 PM
The Dressing Room always meets our need for extraordinary dining. Chef Nichon's menu has wonderfully creative dishes that are plated artistically and served by a friendly staff that has been with him for a time. We are vegan and always find the best of dining here. The kale salad, his popular and delicious corn bread, and roasted vegetable are only a few of the things that satisfy our palate. Sitting in front of a warm fireplace on a cold day in the restaurant==is just the best! We return again and again....
11/27/2013 4:00:00 PM
Very cozy small restaurant.
Very cozy small restaurant. Excellent food and service. Will go back again. Dark parking lot!

Such a great experience!
We just had an wonderful dining experience. I ordered the Millstone salad and the chicken breast, they were both perfect! The dressing was a wonderful apple vinegar with slices of apples and the lettuce tasted like it was picked that day. The chicken had roasted squash served with it that was so sweet and delicious but I can't say enough about how perfectly the chicken was prepared. The rest of the table ordered the pork tenderloin special and it was succulent, flavorful and perfectly cooked. The desserts were as wonderful as the rest of the meal. I had a great cup of coffee and my husband had the apple pie which was the best pie ever served with a carmel ice cream. Our friends had the Devil Chocolate cake, it too was delicious.

Consistently good. Portions are not overwhelming. Cool spot to eat.

Wonderful food and warm ambience
We dine here at least 3-4 times a year and it's consistently good. Friday nights have entertainment; Melissa Newman's jazz trio or Michel Nischan's band House dressing plays every other Friday. that front room with bar can get loud so if you want conversation ask to be seated in the back dining room. The charm of the Westport Playhouse and it's history is evident as is Michel's commitment to use local, seasonal ingredients in the menu. It is a gem of a restaurant for any meal. In summer you can dine on the patio.
