Pleasant French diversion
Provence Restaurant remains in French hands since Baptiste, the new owner and chef for the last couple of years, continues to improve its offerings to the Triangle. The cheese plate appetizer includes flavorful cheeses and appropriate garnishes for those of discerning palates. The fish offerings tend to be thoughtfully, delicately seasoned, with a good sense for best presenting the inherent flavor of the fish. The slightly breaded, fried sole was especially delicate and tasty - with a salmon with dark sauce also very delectible. The restaurant has a thoughtful variety of specials for wines and spirits, and for tastings, Tuesday's half-price on wines by the glass is a real treat.

An island of French cuisine
Provence is a wonderful slice of Paris transported to Carrboro, NC. The food was done to perfection. Standard French fare and nice, but small wine list. The outdoor dining was particularly nice.

beautiful night, beautiful food
Aside from excellent food and service, I really appreciated not being rushed during or after the meal. It allowed us to visit with our friends and savor the time!

A hidden treasure
We were delighted to find a little bit of France right here in NC. We came from out of town just for this experience and we weren't disappointed. When I tasted the baguette, I knew we were going to experience an authentic French meal. The brunch was delicious, and I can't wait to return for dinner.

Very good food. As close to real French food we've found in Chapel Hill/Carborro. Nice ambience...unexpected from the outside. A bit pricey for a neighborhood restaurant, but made up by quality of food.

Romantic, French dining experience!
From the time we arrived, until our final goodbye, we were treated with genuine hospitality, professionalism,
delicious cuisine and wines.I was impressed with how well the staff communicated to one another, so that
every detail of their impeccable service was attended to, with grace and ease.
I can hardly wait to return.

Outdoor Dining in Carrboro
We were aware of Providence in Carrboro but with all of the great restaurants in Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Durham had never made it here. Glad we did. Meal was excellent, outdoor dining was fine (on the porch, not in the yard), food was very good and waitstaff was excellent. It could get somewhat noisy in the yard because of traffic on Weaver St. but on the porch the noise was not intrusive.
We'll be back. Excellent dining experience.

Great quiet evening
Celebrated our 29th anniversary there. It is a very nice place to reconnect and get a chance to talk at an unhurried pace and enjoy a great dinner and great bottle or glass.
7/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
A very charming French Bistro like dining experience. Multiple varieties of escargo appetizers are terrific particularly baked with Roquefort cheese. Seered scallops and Provence salad were great. Rack of lamb entree was well prepared and presented. We will definitely return and probably try one of the whole fish entrees that are chosen and filleted at the table. Overall -- one of the most elegent divining experiences in the Durham/Chapel Hill area.

Nice Birthday Dinner
The food and service were both very good. We tried both snail dishes to start. They were delicious, and we enjoyed every bit of the sauces with the warm crusty bread. We had the duck, tenderloin and 4 fish entrees. All were perfectly prepared. We found the dining room to be a little tight and several degrees to warm, but neither would keep us from returning for another special occasion. At $26 - $30 for an entree it is a little expensive for an everyday dinner out.

Escargot and Puligny Montrechet
Cannot ever complain about a thing whn commening a nice dinner with tasty escargot and fine wine...coupled with Sole Almandine except the kitchen roasted our plate in the oven so much it kept cooking the vegetables and they were too hot to eat, the plate too hot to touch for 10-15 minutes after serving...think it kept cooking my fish too as it appeared to be wilting on the plate...also the salad advertising heirloom tomatoes in a Caprese deliverable was composed of tiny grpae like tomatoes, not the juicy, large Granger County type I was expecting.....
7/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
No nonsense excellent French
No nonsense excellent French food; check out the escargots baked in roquefort....it will convert even the most anti-escargot person....it is a wonderful appetizer

Cozy romantic experience
I took my wife here for her birthday and had a really nice time. Every time we dine here the experience is wonderful. The food is excellent and the service is great. It is a little on the expensive side at dinner, so we save it for special occasions. Lunch and brunch are more economically priced but the food is just as delicious. It's the kind of place that feels dressier than baggy blue jeans and t-shirt, though I am not aware of a dress code. Wouldn't recommend it for small children or loud boisterous groups. The outdoor patio area is fantastic when the weather is nice. Menu rotates so it doesn't get stale. We'd probably go there every week if we could afford it!

Delicious food, excellent value!
Recently, we dined at Provence in a group of 6 and a few weeks later in a group of 4. On both occasions, everyone was delighted with the food. The chef is classically-trained and very skilled. Entrees focus on impeccably fresh fish and high quality meats prepared using varied flavors and techniques. Although desserts were hit or miss, every appetizer, salad, and entree that I tasted was flavorful and well-balanced. Most memorable: Escargots w/Roquefort, Salad Bergere, Salt-baked Fish w/Hollandaise, Swordfish w/Asparagus Risotto, Tournedos of Beef, Fruit Galette. The food is reasonably-priced for the quality. The portion sizes are generous but not overly so. We highly recommend Provence for a thoroughly satisfying dining experience.

Magnifique - as always!
Exec Summary: Our go-to place for celebrations. Excellent food, particularly the fish. Wonderful, friendly people. And great outdoor dining (if the bugs aren't too bad). Go there!
We've been here a few times before - and always for a celebration. This was a particularly important celebration, so I immediately made reservations again (my fiancée loves the place - and she was a chef, as in, "promoted from sous chef at a fine restaurant"). Naturally, we had fish dishes, along with an excellent tomato+pepper soup, escargots, and a potato+gruyere tart. I left special instructions for flowers - which were perfect (my fiancée *loves* them!).
Recommended: the seafood sampler plate. A great taste of excellent dishes.

Soothing brunch spot
Sitting under the umbrella outside, being served French food (delicieux!) on silver service..what else do you need for Sunday brunch?
8/24/2013 5:00:00 PM
My husband and I dine here for special occasions and absolutely love it. Sitting outside is perfect! Excellent service and wonderful management. The food is excellent!

Paris of the Piedmont
Unquestionably the best French onion soup on this side of The Pond. I've characterized it as a religious experience on the level of the Rapture. Whatever you have will be cooked perfectly with local, fresh ingredients gleaned from the farmers' markets. After the soup, I had scallops on a bed of breaded eggplant and mild greens. The coquille were seared to perfection and the aubergine was breaded and panned as a delicate compliment. Go. Eat. Bliss.

Great choice for anniversary
I appreciate having good, traditional French cuisine available at this lovely little restaurant. Provence's menu can't be called "adventurous," however, it's traditional French fare is astutely prepared and excellent. The wine list pairs well and is appropriate with the menu. Service was attentive. For an upscale restaurant, the check turned out to be surprisingly less than I've paid at restaurants of lesser quality. All in all, an excellent choice for our anniversary dinner.

C'est formidable! Allez, allez....
We chose this pleasant restaurant for my husband's birthday dinner after looking at the menu and discovering that the birthday boy could have his steak, a wonderful filet mignon, while our daughter and I could have lighter fare. The filet of sole and the sea scallops were made to perfection, and the salads were delicious. The bread was the best we've had at a restaurant, and we were excited to see vegetarian menu offerings that our holiday guests would enjoy. The service was friendly, timely, and without a hint of any off-putting hauteur. The outside dining area was lovely, surrounded by a quaint stone wall and an herb garden. The ambiance was welcoming, relaxing, and generally in tune with the Carrboro aesthetic. We will definitely return.

Great Anniversary Experience
Everything was absolutely perfect. The Appetizers, the Entre, The Desert, The service. Probably in our top 2 or 3 restaurant experiences over 55 years together.

Generous servings of fine food
You must get the onion soup. You must.
Provence is known for its fish dishes, but everything on the menu is outstanding.

lunch at Provence
Provence has reopened with a luncheon option that we took advantage of. It's a very pleasant place. Our lunch was just fine and our waitperson was very attentive and took good care of us.

La Provence is a special place, a gem. It's as good or better than many big city high power places but tucked away in a quiet corner of little Carrboro. You can lose yourself and friends in the French (or Dutch) ambiance. The food is terrific, the service is just right - not imposing but always attentive. Highly recommended!

Long and relaxing meal
We had a lovely, long, relaxed meal. Every course was delish! Sitting outside was perfect but I can't speak for the inside experience.

Great place for outdoor brunch
We love Sunday brunch on the patio. A reservation is recommended to ensure a patio seating during nice weather. The menu is lovely and food is terrific. The French onion soup is highly recommended.
10/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Three words: French onion soup. Just go ahead and start at the top of the food chain. Their potage is a religious experience and can be an entree for a light meal or the introduction to a feast. I think as customers we have an obligation to be as creative with the menu as the kitchen is with the ingredients.
10/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
A very nice find off the Interstates in quiet neighborhood transitioning to retail/commercial. Outdoor seating on warm late October day was perfect lunch spot. Meals simple yet tasty, wines delightful and wait staff cordially inviting. Recommend to all.

Fun Friendly French restaurant
Provence has an uncomplicated menu and a good kitchen. The manager, Pierre is helpful with wine selection and
the 1/2 bottle wine list is useful and an alternative to a singe glass. There is an ample though not overwhelming
wine list. We've enjoyed Dinner and Brunch at Provence and will definitely return. We have driven in France and this
establishment is similar to what we have experienced in the countryside and very "French" in NC!
11/2/2013 5:00:00 PM
fine dining at it's best
Great food. If I had to be really picky I would suggest the frites be more like those thin delicious morsles the French do so well. But everything was delicious!

French with Southern Hospitality
From the owner to the hostess to our waiter,we experienced great service and food at Provence this past Friday night. We thought that we'd left Raleigh with plenty of time to get there for our 6:30 res. However I-40 was slow traffic; still not worrying that we may be late. But Chapel Hill traffic was all grid-locked! We called at 6:25 as we were near the corner of Raleigh St and W. Franklin and told them we were on our way. Arrived at 7:00 & staff & owner were so nice & not making us feel bad. One of our guest forgot her reading glasses & they provided a pair. The French Onion Soup was superb! We all had great meals from seafood to duck. Dessert was shared. Bread pudding was awesome. Thank you Provence, we had a lovely time!
11/7/2013 4:00:00 PM
I am a grad student and brought my family here while they were visiting Chapel Hill. The experience was terrific. The manager Pierre greeted us on arrival and was attentive throughout (helping with pouring the wine, answer questions, etc.) The service was very good throughout and all three courses were delicious. Plentiful portions and very well prepared. The food was superb - amazing variety of fish and vegetarian dishes as well some meat/poultry options. The wine hit the spot - the whites in particular were great - a huge hit with some pretty pick Chardonnay fans.
Overall, I highly recommend this hidden gem. I will definitely be returning to Provence soon.

And Sole Almondine and beet salad! Simply awesome! plus the bead with olive oil and tapanade! Yummy yum yum!

The restaurant is quiet. Very important to me. The service is attentive but not intrusive; also very important to me. Food ranks among the best in Chapel Hill-Carrboro.
