The tableside guacamole was delicious as were the margaritas. This isn't the kind of place where you will find smothered burritos as big as your head - it is normal portions of freshly prepared modern mexican food. We had the chicken enchiladas suizas and they were delicious. They are served with refried black beans (while they tasted good when mashed up they are very unappetizing in appearance - i think they should be left whole or change to pinto beans) and white rice family style on the side. While I haven't had plain rice at mexican restaurants before I really liked it this way as you could use it to soak up the tasty sauce from the dish. Finally the check came with two small fresh churros - way better than a mint!

Awesome SLC Addition
Alamexo impressed us two foodies who have dined with similar menus in Chicago, New York, and San Francisco. This menu is on par with those big city chefs' offerings! The entrees were authentic and had lovely, spicy complex flavors. The fried plantains were perfect; crisp, soft, sweet, and salty. The corn side was delicious and addictive. The staff was still learning the menu a bit, but they were professional and found the answers to our questions. The subtle decor contributes to the classy ambiance, and our view of the moonrise over the east mountains was a bonus!

Watch out Frida!
My wife and I really enjoy Sonora Grill. But Ogden is a trek from SLC. Frida is a good alternative, but is a tad highbrow for my tastes. Alamexo is the perfect combination of Mexican with a contemporary flair, great location and fantastic service. Do not miss a chance to try this delicious new restaurant!

Pretty Good So Far
They're only a couple of weeks in so keep that in mind on this review. This is the same team that brought us ZY which I liked quite a bit but I guess wasn't working financially. Overall the service was quite good although it took a while to get the check.
Other than the meat in my Pork Tacos being dry and the rice could use some more seasoning - the food was quite good - I would direct you more toward the main entrees than the tacos based on my initial experience.
Hopefully they can dial it in a little more and I can upgrade my rating here but for now it is a strong opening experience and will definitely be coming back.

I had a business lunch here with my partner and a client. The location worked well as our client was able to walk here from his downtown office. We were very pleased with our dining experience. I believe this place serves a unique niche in the Salt Lake restaurant scene. I would describe it as upscale, gourmet Mexican food, served in a comfortable, fun atmosphere. The food was imaginative and delicious. I am a huge fan of guacamole, and the table side guacamole was fun to watch being made, and is some of the best I have had. Though I do not know the individual names of the dishes we ordered, all of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals. The service was pleasant and attentive . We are really looking forward to our next visit to Alamexo.

Delicious new menu
I was a little disappointed to hear that Zy had changed it's menu, and name. That said, we had nothing but delicious surprises when we dined at Alamexo for the first time. The margaritas were creative and flavorful. We tried a variety of appetizers and main dishes and experienced a wonderful array of spices and flavors. We will return!

Guacamole is prepared at the table and some of the best I've ever had. Ordered small plates from the appetizer menu which were all excellent. This is my second experience at Alamexo and I will definitely return.

The restaurant recently changed its name from ZY to Alamexo, and it's cuisine to Mexican; however, they kept the same chef...a wise move. The new menu, although not as extensive as one encounters in many Mexican restaurants, is nicely balanced and offers several choices within traditional categories. Actually, this is a nice approach because one doesn't have to spend 30 minutes just trying to read the menu. I like a short but nicely balanced and varied menu. Be sure to get the guacamole that is prepared table-side. Several daily specials were also available; the wild boar enchilada that was very good. The wine list is also not extremely extensive but, again, well balanced and thought out for appropriate pairings. Service was very good.

First visit a success
Our first visit to Alamexo was a great treat. Loved the guacamole prepared at the table. We had the mahi special and it was quite nice. Server was new and really could use refinement but we were treated well. Will return for another evening.
