We had family visiting and wanted them to experience one of the local restaurants, so we took them to Cafe Bleu. Right away, they loved the intimate, yet relaxed space. For dinner, they had the Coq au Vin and the scallops, which they thoroughly enjoyed, and were impressed by the reasonable prices. Our waitress was very attentive throughout the evening.
My husband and I have been to Cafe Bleu a number of times now and have brought friends and family on different occasions. Their responses have always been positive and we've always had an enjoyable experience (the quality of their food and service is very consistent). Our favorite dishes are the Surf and Turf and Steak Frites. We highly recommend.

We went for brunch. Food was excellent and reasonably priced. Service was good. Decor was comfortable, contemporary wine bar. Fortunately and unfortunately the Bottomless Mimosas were a big hit with most patrons, and as a result the noise level got very loud as some guest sover indulged on the Mimosas. Never the less this is a very reasonable place to have brunch. We found it on open table, but it appeared to be a popular spot for the neighborhood crowd. After the excellent brunch, we look forward to going back to try lunch or dinner.

Hidden Gem in Mission Hills
Don't tell anyone about this place. It's our little secret. If you want a relaxing ambiance with impeccable servicel, awesome french-style cuisine, and an eclectic wine list, this is your new hangout.

great neighborhood spot
We were visiting San Diego from Chicago and wanted to avoid the Gaslamp District so this restaurant was a great find! Relaxing atmosphere, nothing pretentious, not the biggest of menus but everyone enjoyed what they had and people in our party even brought other friends the next day for a repeat dinner. I would definitely recommend it!

First it is a great place to eat, the food is delicious, the cheese plate if you like cheese is greatly served with crispy bread and pure honey..the food is served in quantity that will fill you up...so very tasty food and you wont be starving, plus the prices are very reasonable for the quality of the food you're eating!
Plus it is small and intimate, and the service is great!

We love going here almost weekly. The staff remembers their regulars and welcomes new customers with the same enthusiasm. Cannot say enough good things about this place.

As ALWAYS ...
I enjoy Café Bleu as often as possible. I LOVE it and friends who have never previously dined there always leave feeling the same. I deviated from my "usual" yesterday at lunch and had a Cobb Salad which they call a Chopped Salad. The BEST!
As always, I highly recommend Café Bleu.

Didn't know about this place but now visited twice in 4 days - smaller scale restaurant in Mission Hills, perfect for couples and even small groups. Great Service! Awesome high quality food! Perfect Price Point! I will be back for sure. The Salmon, Pork Chop are both excellent and the daily specials sound, and look great.
6/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food and service. Treat us better than family.
6/21/2013 4:00:00 PM
My husband and I went out for an anniversary dinner. We chose Cafe Blue because it was small and quiet. It was perfect! The service was excellent and it was only surpassed by the food.
6/21/2013 4:00:00 PM
I had cut out a review of the restaurant in March, and finally went with two other couples. We all loved it. The food was tasty and the choices were many. I knew I kept the review for a reason! The onion soup was better then any I had in France!

We just completely love this
We just completely love this place. It's actually hard to give it 5 stars because we don't want to add to competition for tables(!), but in fairness to the owner, we must report this is consistently a 5 out of 5 (and we're big time foodies, so we know of whenst we speak). The owner and waitstaff are delightful, friendly and professional. The atmosphere is homey, artistic and eclecticly fun. The chef is talented and inspired -- would love to see him (her?) on "Chopped." We travel 45 min each way to go to Cafe Bleu, and it's worth every minute. Great place!!

we love this place!!
This is our go to brunch spot, especially when we have guests in town!
Javier always makes us feel right at home!

Cafe Bleu Bistro & Wine Bar is an outstanding location for classic French dishes. The Coq au Vin is simply marvelous, it will be hard to order other dishes to sample the whole menu. Our time is at our own disposal so we chose the period just after the lunch rush to have a quiet experience. Cafe Bleu Bistro & Wine Bar is now high on our list!!!

Our first visit
My husband and I met friends for lunch. Everything was good French fare, but for the puff pastry shell which was very tough and must have been heated in the microwave. I will definitely return, as there aren't that many French based restaurants around. Service was very good and the bistro is pleasantly decorated. Probably lively at night.
7/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
Delicious gourmet dishes at a reasonable price. Good service and casual atmosphere. Highly recommend it.

Made an Excuse Just to Go....
We love this place so much, we booked The Old Globe just to have an excuse to dine at Cafe Bleu! Great menu, really fabulous food (oh, and the cheeseboard!), thoughtful and well put together wine list, personable and attentive service, charming atmosphere...all for crazy affordable prices. What's not to love? Just a great, great place.
7/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
They do a great job with brunch. Omelets are excellent. Service is welcoming and attentive.
7/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
Weasel a spur of the moment trip to San Diego to visit our kids. I searched for a place to have dinner within 10 minutes of our hotel. Cafe Bleu popped up & looked intriguing. Our evening was fabulous from start to finish. A relaxed yet professional staff & superb food. We'll be bac!

Definitely Neighborhood Gem!
This charming french restaurant has a great ambiance! It is cozy, but they accommodate a group up to 14. The best part was that they separated the checks automatically which was a plus.. If you wanted to then combine the checks at the end, it was not a problem. The food is amazing, you really can't go wrong with any dish - too many to recommend. If you want recommendations, ask the servers who are up to par. And for those who are vegetarian, they definitely have yummy vegetarian food. My friends loved the flight of red wine/white wine/beer which is 3 1/2 glasses of three different wine/beer. The Chocolate Flourless Cake is delish! Haven't gone there for brunch, but heard it is great! Parking lot in the back and on the street.

One of our new favorites!
Went for dinner this weekend and loved everything about it! Cute and cozy spot, good service, and great food. We ordered the brie appetizer, steak tartar, the bleu wedge salad, the shrimp and gnocchi entree, as well as the coc au vin. Everything was delicious and we can't wait to go back!
8/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
Café bleu is a wonderful date night
We like it because of its French bistro cuisine and its reasonably priced wine list. The service is friendly and not obtrusive and the sound level is low to moderate so that a conversation is possible.
8/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
Would definitely return!
I was pleasantly surprised by ambiance, service, and most importantly, wine selection and food of this cozy restaurant. Will definitely return.
8/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food, price and service!
We love French food, and to find a French Bistro with such reasonable prices really made our day. Cafe Bleu is centrally located and has easy parking. The service was excellent and everyone loved their meal (an unusual experience with my family!) We can't wait to go back!

Food and service to remember
We stumbled on Cafe Bleu while house-hunting in Mission Hills. Arriving at a quiet time on our first visit, we had a chance to talk with the manager, Javier, who was warm and had great suggestions about the menu, and the neighborhood. They have a small but interesting wine list, offering by-the-glass options at reasonable price points and several solid beers on tap.
While we like the atmosphere, the menu will keep us coming back! Chef's takes on standards like steak frites and bouillabaisse are lovely and their daily canape appetizer has sounded amazing every time we've been in and tasted wonderful when we've had it.
Whether it's a quick cheese plate and glass of wine, or a full dinner, Cafe Bleu has been a hit every time we've been in.

Cozy neighborhood find
Cafe Bleu is a lovely little neighborhood bistro with good food, good service and charming owners. Best of all you can actually have a conversation while enjoying your meal and hear your table mates. Whenever I want to catch up with friends I head to Cafe Bleu confident that no matter how crowded, I will still be able to hear what's being said at the table.

Know your cheese-ability!
It was amazing to me that we dined at this lovely little cafe for the first time the other night considering we spend a lot of time in the Mission Hills area, though I am so glad we did! My only recommendation upon ordering is to consider the amount of cheese that will be in your meal! Don't get me wrong, I love cheese! However, I misjudged how much I could eat in one sitting! The French Onion soup was a definite highlight and if you've enjoyed time in Paris, you will LOVE the Croque Monsieur! It was cheesy (surprise!), with a generous amount of tasty ham and a lovely toasted top. The wine that was recommended by our server was delish! Sadly, no room for desert!
9/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
I enjoyed the Prixe Fixe Sunday menu with wine pairings and a cheese course. It was delicious and the ambiance and decor were fun and inviting. The food was deliecious although the desserts seemed as though they were just breads bought and re-heated onto the plate between the chocolate and the maple fig options both our desserts were similar in consistancy, shape, and temperature even though they were described as a souffle of sorts and bread pudding. Other than that discrepency we enjoyed the wines and atmosphere would most definitely return in the future.

Always an excellent experience
As always our dining experience was memorable. Everything we have ever had there has been very good. We started with the Chef's appetizers, three that regularly change. They were all excellent. My husband then had the wonderful onion soup and my son and I shared the spinach and crab dip. My husband and I each had the coq au vin and our son had the surf and turf. Both dishes were excellent. We had wonderful service. Despite the restaurant being very busy, Javier, the owner always found time to come by and ask us how each course was and suggested the perfect wine for us. It was the first time our son had been there and Javier made a point to ask him his name and then stopped by several times.
9/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
We love it here!
Café Bleu has been our go-to for the best seafood and allergy-friendly options as I have Celiac Disease and find it very difficult to eat out. Javier is wonderful and the whole staff is very knowledgeable and accommodating.

Casual French Excellent Service
Excellent personal service by owner Javier, coq au vin delicious, hamburger messy and fries a bit oily. Wine selection outstanding.

Tucked in a somewhat nondescript part of Washington Street in Mission Hills, Cafe Bleu has been a consistent winner. I have dined here many times and recommended it to friends. The prices are moderate and the food and preparation is high quality. It is reminiscent of a French Bistro. You can tell they are serious about the food because there are no salt and pepper shakers on the tabels, just like in France. The place is small and intimate. If you are a tourist, go here. You will be surrounded by locals.

Cafe Bleu Bistro
Excellent wine selection with most available by glass (or even half-glass) or bottle. Loved the canapés! Great service. A very relaxing dinner experience.
10/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
We had such a lovely time here, the food was great but the service was outstanding. The owner personally takes care of you, makes great suggestions and welcomes you to stay as long as you like. So much so, that we will be back to celebrate my husbands birthday next week!
10/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great service - good food. Like the idea of getting 1/2 glass of wine on Mondays to try different wines.
10/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
I am a regular so rarely respond to the request for comments. However, we went there last night to celebrate my granddaughter's 30th birthday. There were 7 family members who had a variety of dishes. EVERYONE had a perfect dining experience!! The food, the service, the atmosphere, etc. It is a great place to enjoy a wonderful meal. Thanks, Cafe Bleu!!

French food and casual atmosphere
We found Cafe Bleu Bistro and Wine Bar on Open Table and it was the perfect place for a casual weeknight dinner. We were warmly greeted and served by a friendly and attentive staff. The atmosphere is casual with cozy seats with cushions around the perimeter of the dining room. French onion soup is a must for starters and we enjoyed fresh salads along with red wines from a select list of excellent wines. Don't miss the ganache chocolate cake which is the best we've had - much like a souffle. We'll visit again when in the San Diego area.
10/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
I brought my friend here for dinner. We had a great time. They even brought out a complimentary flour-less chocolate cake to celebrate her getting into grad school. I think we will definitely go back. The owner also came over to our table and greeted us, and congratulated her on grad school acceptance. Overall, they were amazing.

Great little place
This place is really good. It is a small intimate place with great attention to high quality ingredients put together perfectly with a simple unique flair. Service is friendly and attentive, food is excellent with a progression of tastes that take you on a food trip with a happy ending. Pricing is very good with the whole experience leaving you feeling great. A must try

Hidden Neighborhood Gem
I love going to Cafe Bleu. They have the best brunch I've found in San Diego. I just recently took 2 people from out of state that both had the french toast and said it was delicious! My favorite is their Traditional Eggs Benedict. The atmosphere is mellow and generally fairly quiet, and the service is great. I can only speak to their Brunch food, but I can imagine their dinner menu is just as delicious. $7 bottomless mimosas during Brunch and many other specials during the week for dinner. Check this place out - you won't regret it!
10/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
My wife and I wanted to try something new. Using the OpenTable app, we saw a listing for a contemporary french cuisine. After this one trip, it is now on our favorite list. The place was quiet, romantic, and relaxed. Once there, we found out about there Sunday special; They have a "Prix Fixe" and "wine pairing". The list was so hard to choose from, I had to order two extra dishes. I highly recommend this as a Sunday treat. I also recommend the Canopes as the appetizer. For dessert, I had to order extra was because I couldn't pick from the Dark Chocolate Ganache Cake or the Fig & Cranberry Bread Pudding - both were great. Everything about the place was a great: the ambiance, the prices, the service, and above all the wonderful food.
10/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
A great value
The combination of very good food, price, ambience, and service provided us with a great value. The prices reflected that the portions were one meal size, enough, but not too much food to eat at one seating. The quality of the ingredients were great for the entrees (steak frites / shrimp). The wine list is thoughtful and well priced; nice real Chablis without the big ticket price was our choice. The staff is very efficient and friendly. I would definitely go back; make a reservation.

A delightful find.
Cafe Bleu is tucked in between a liquor store and the Lamplighter. It's small, reminiscent of European cafes with hardwood flooring, dark walls, and candles in wall sconces. A large bar dominates the back wall, but it's a casual sipping bar - enjoy your wine, enjoy some food, you're not going to be jostled by folks trying to get a drink. The tables are close together, but arranged for intimacy.
The wine list is well selected, and our server was quite knowledgeable. He had suggestions for every course, salad to dessert, and the wines were nicely priced and available in half glass, glass, and bottle options. The food was delicious, everything we tried worth trying again. Definitely recommend the steak and frites and the mussels!
10/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
It was all very good! It was french so everything was cheesy (and I don't even like cheese) but it was EXCELLENT!!! WIll definitely go again to try other menu items!
10/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
We were hostage down in the "Fashion Valley" wasteland, at least when it comes to quiet, delectable eating sites but decided to take a gamble on an Open Table recommendation for something close-by. To our great appreciation, we drew from many opportunities within a short drive/feasible walk from Hotel Circle to find Cafe Bleu Bistro in the very comfortable Mission Hills district. The Cafe was as seductive as can be for a small neighborhood bistro, with a modest menu of delectable items and a very reasonable wine list. Both ambiance and service were outstanding.
11/6/2013 4:00:00 PM
My girlfriends and I had a wonderful Brunch at Cafe Bleu. The food was delicious especially the Crab Benedict, and the Burbon French Toast with Applewood Smoked Bacon. The service was excellent and our Bottomless Mimosas were never empty. We also tried desert, and the Bread Pudding was a big hit! I can't wait to go back and try more dishes.
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
I always feel really welcome
I always feel really welcome and really enjoy the friendly atmosphere. I like that whenever possible you are offered options of where to sit. One can always count on a delicious meal and excellent service all making for a memorable experience.
11/13/2013 4:00:00 PM
I really liked my mushroom polenta - excellent. My friend wasn't as pleased with her Mousier Croque - not a classic one (like she's had in Paris) has it had cheese on the top. She also had the soup of the day and said it was just pretty good but not great. All in all I'd recommend it and go back. My husband and I have also eaten dinner there and enjoyed it.
12/4/2013 4:00:00 PM
Had brunch here...everything was spectacular, from the bottomless mimosas, service & yummy food! Would totally recommend this place in Mission!
