You only come here because it is one of only two decent options in town. But it will not let you down, so long as you are not expecting a gourmet experience.

Casual (it's the islands...)
Casual (it's the islands...) but thoroughly professional. Interesting spin on fusion with its German leitmotif...My wife really enjoyed her antelope and I thought the vegetarian options were satisfactory. Perfect location for a nice meal after hiking Volcano NP and then going back to Kiluea to see the lava glow after dark.

I was here 20 years ago and I don't think the dining room has changed since then. Same chef too. This is a wonderful, warm place to stay with a fabulous fresh menu every day. My husband had the duck which he ate almost every day we were on the Big Island and pronounced it fine (he's VERY hard to please), and I had antelope--rare, mild and delicious. Vegetables are fresh and al dente, and slice of au gratin potato just right. I also had the beet salad (plenty for two) and no dessert--we were too full of our dinner! I highly recommend this place for meals. The chef is adventurous AND discriminating.

Wonderful but in need of an Upgrade
The restaurant was very lovely. The food was tasty. The selection was wonderful. The service was very good. The staff was knowledgeable. I really liked how they were on top of it when it came to refilling my water glass. I didn't have to ask and that's important to me. The furniture and decor seemed "old" and "dated". If it were my restaurant I would re-do the interior with things more native to that part of the island and freshen things up. Maybe get a new couch (the one located next to the fireplace), re-upholster the chairs, get solid colored cloth place mats, etc...small kind things. They could use nicer uniforms too. It was more of fine dining and the uniforms didn't seem to go with it. Too busy maybe?! Overall, I would go again :)

This restaurant is part of
This restaurant is part of a lodge up on the Kilauea Crater on the big island of Hawaii. One med-sized room, interesting variety of entree items (we had lamb, duck and antelope!) and there are others. Huge old fireplace, rustic but up-to-date ambiance. Neat place to stay, also, in a tropical rainforest. It was our anniversary, and we had breakfast the next morning with quite a varied menu also. I'd definitely recommend a stay and meals there.

We've been returning to The Kilauea Lodge for 20+ years and are never disappointed. The soups are the best anywhere and the attention to details is amazing.

Rustic Appeal and Solid Food
A wonderful surprise to find such quality food when there are so few food choices near the Volcanoes National Park. The ambiance certainly gave it the woodsy, homey charm. The dishes were solid and seemed a blending of comfort food with a gourmet flare. While the place was crowded, the noise level stayed well within reason.

Friendly and attentive service
Friendly and attentive service and outstanding food. A little pricey for Volcano, but still worthy of a strong recommendation.

A traveler's gem near a Volcano!
The reason we visited this restaurant was the proximity to Volcano National Park.
What we experienced, was so much more.
The food choices were amazing and the entrees delivered did not disappoint.
The Hunter's Soup was lacking of meat, mostly herbs, but the entree made up for it.
5/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
We always come here to eat while on The Big Island. It is the best to eat within miles of Volcanoes National Park. Prices, for Hawaii, are reasonable.
5/11/2013 4:00:00 PM
We stayed in Hilo for 3 months, and ate at a great variety of restaurants -- many quite good. But Kilauea Lodge was best by far. The menu is varied, and differs slightly every day. We ate three meals there, and each one stood out. I had never had duck l'orange, and I don't know if I will order it again unless we come back here -- as I don't know how it could have been done any better. The bonus is the location by the volcano and national park. After dinner, a 15 minute drive took us to an overlook where we watched the smoke from the active caldera glow orange at dusk from the lava below.

We had picked this restaurant for supper one night during our stay in Volcano. We weren't sure what to expect from what we found online but when we arrived and throughout the whole meal we were impressed with the setting, service and the food that we got. While a bit more than we would usually spend for a dinner out it was worth every penny. Our waitress was friendly, attentive and always on hand. The food itself was served quickly, hot off the grill and cooked to perfection. Overall both of us were extremely happy with our experience and would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a great dining experience in Volcano.

loved it so much we went back
Having enjoyed far too much, we were to full for dessert when our server came around with the tray. We managed to make it back the next evening for a couple of their lilikoi margaritas and a fabulous cheesecake. Couldn't have been happier.
5/14/2013 4:00:00 PM
My husband and I both ordered the leg of antelope filet. The meat was tough and not quite what we expected. Unfortunately, I was disappointed in our entree. We ordered mushroom caps as an appetizer, and they were yummy! The service was excellent! I would go back again, but order something different.

Unique dining experience
Local ingredients for fresh, unique menu options. We ordered safari schnitzel made with antelope and wild mushroom risotto, both excellent. Delicious soup and salad. Lava cake/brownie dessert topped off a wonderful meal. Great atmosphere, huge fireplace. Perfect stop after a visit to Volcanoes NP.

The place @ the volcano
This is the main place I would recommend when staying at the volcano. Very nice atmosphere, excellent food and service. Highly recommend.
6/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
The lodge is a cozy setting and has a nice gazebo with a heater out front. Menu has a variety of options, including some unusual items. Quality of food was good. I particularly enjoyed the coconut crusted brie appetizer and coconut cheesecake dessert. If you are celebrating a birthday, call ahead and they will write your name in the menu, give you balloons and sing.
6/22/2013 4:00:00 PM
Our party of four were pleased by the variety of food offered - fresh, hot appetizers (coconut flaked brie unusual combination). Do not miss the Alsatian soup - BEST item we enjoy each time we visit! Chicken Tuscany with grapes and Catch of the day (we had Ahi prepared two ways-impossible to decide which was best). Service again excellent, constant attention, yet not intrusive. Well worth cost of meal. This restaurant is always on our "must do" each time we visit Volcano Park/Village area!

My compliments to the chef
Our dinner was wonderful. Beginning with the Hunter Soup everything was delicious. At our table we enjoyed the Paupiettes of Beef, Fresh Catch of the Day and the German Sausage Plate. All the food was delightful. Kilauea Lodge has not disappointed. The service was well timed and pleasant and helpful. We will be back as it is just a wonderful place to eat.

Memorable trip to the Volcano
The round trip to the Kilauea Volcano was a 5+ hour drive. Our group sampled the Hasenfeffer (rabbit stew), antelope (it's from Texas, and I'm not sure why they serve it here other than perhan away from the excitement of seeing an active volcano steaming during the day and glowing red at night, ending the day with fast food or the cafeteria-style places seen at monuments would have been a bit of a downer. The ambiance is Lodge-like, but there is no taxidermy, just an upscale quasi-rustic feel. ps the perceived need to have game on the menu), duck l'orange (old-style and quite good), and a few other more standard dishes. They were all good. This is a restaurant that doesn't detract from a spectacular trip.
7/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
I gave advance notice it was my daughter's birthday. They had balloons on the table and had a Happy Birthday message to her on the menu. The food was delicious although my seafood medley could have used more seasoning. The wait staff did an excellent job. Would definitely recommend for a high quality meal.

Glad we had the opportunity to try
Our travels had us one night in Volcano, Hawaii, so we tried the Kilauea Lodge. Loved the ambience, and cabin type feel. Having a soup or salad and sides included with your meal was a welcome change where so many restaurants these days are ala carte. Crab cakes and mushrooms were outstanding as appetizers; and salads were fresh. Main dishes ordered from Ahi, to Duck L'orange to chicken were all delicious. We ordered the peanut butter/chocolate cake and macademia nut pie to go because we were so full, but enjoyed the desserts later. Wonderful service, and wine list too. Highly recommend!

a gem on a volcano
Our stay at the lodge was wonderful. But the best was to find a surprising excellent restaurant. So good in fact that we took all our meals there lunch and dinner for 3 days.

Finer dining in the Volcano area
Enjoyed a wonderful dinner here. The menu changes nightly. We had choices of fish, beef, chicken, pork and antelope. Soups and salads were excellent, as were the desserts. If you're spending the night in Volcano, this is a good option for dinner.

Wonderful Dining Experience
Kilauea Lodge Restaurant was a wonderful way to end a day of touring Volcano National Park. The menu was ecclectic and portions were just right (not to lagre or small). Salad and soup selections to start were very tasty--especially the potato leek soup. Our group of 4 ordered Prosciutto Primavera and nighltly special (tristan lobster tails) and catch of the day (ahi) and all were delicious. The selected wine pairings were complimented the meals. The server was very gracious and helpful. This was one of our best meals in Hawaii.
8/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
While vacationing in Hilo, Hawaii, our daughter turned 19 so for her birthday celebration we dined at Kilauea Lodge. They saved a table for us close to the majestic fireplace and had balloons tied to the table. The atmosphere is wonderful; quiet, but not too quiet, cozy and rustic, yet somewhat elegant. Service was fantastic! The food was even better! We all tried something different; antelope, duck, seafood, lamb. It was all outstanding! That's saying a lot for my picky teenagers! There is a "split-plate fee" so we all ordered our own meal and while the portions were very generous we did not have leftovers! It was that good! We highly recommend this place! (A little pricey but well worth it!)

Best Place on the entire Island!!!
Went here for dinner while visiting the volcano....so good we returned the next day for breakfast.
We stayed two weeks on the island and found this the best food we had the entire time. The quality and presentation (with a bit of German influence) were outstanding and the quaint lodge type restaurant has a bit of history in it's unique fireplace. The special margarita with the ling powder was a hit.
We were so impressed we decided to come back for breakfast the next morning....the menu looked great....unfortunately, we were late and they would not serve breakfast even though we were the only ones in the restaurant. But we did stay for lunch and the food was good....but not as noteworthy as the dinner.

Excellent, with a hint of Germany
We truly enjoyed our dining experience at the lodge. It must be the only place on the Big Island where you can order hasenpfeffer! Yet despite the obvious Teutonic touch to the menu, the offerings are broad and tasty. We enjoyed the well-seasoned meatloaf and a nightly special turf & surf - a nicely-sized South African lobster tail with a tender peppercorn-crusted steak. Delicious. Nice selection of wines, beer, and liquors. Although we had a late 8:30 reservation on a quiet Monday night, we never felt rushed by the staff, who were friendly and well-informed about the menu offerings.

Lovely place to eat in Volcano
Great atmosphere and well-prepared food. The rack of lamb was cooked medium rare as requested and serving was very generous. Seasonings a bit heavy, though. Baked Brie appetizer scrumptious. Service attentive and accommodating. Zagat food rating of 25 seems generous. This New Yorker would give it 22 or 23. But if you're staying up in Volcano and want to be pampered after a full day of hiking, this is your place.

Best european style food
Kilauea lodge has the best European style food on the "Big Island". Aside from the food the fireplace is awesome.

We made the reservation online, phantasic easy! And we got a table in the middle of nowhere, great adventure. The location is wunderful! The service, meal, drinks also. We liked it very much. The welcome was friendly .
Such a restaurant in the rainforest, unbelievable!

Lodge dining on the volcano
Kilauea Lodge has wonderful food, good service, and a very diverse menu. They always have some game choices, along with fresh fish, steaks, and some children's choices. It is a lodge environment - not much of a view outside, but it does not matter because you will be focusing on conversation with people at your table, or the restaurant decorations, or the food. And they also have a wonderful French toast for breakfast, with comes with the room if you stay at the lodge or one of the wonderful cabins.

Best lobster ever
I've eaten lobster in Maine, Australia, and other locations. This was the best, sweetest lobster I've ever had, and it was cooked perfectly. Our appetizer and salad were delicious too. A perfect meal!

We've dined here several times and always enjoy the warm ambiance and welcoming service.
both unusual and traditional fine dining choices are on the menu, as well as a lovely wine list!

Great dinner in Volcano
Went to this restaurant after spending a day at the Volcanoes National Park. We had a great dinner here. My wife and I both got the mahi mahi, but prepared different ways. Both preparations were excellent. The quinoa that was served with the dish was nothing special and I would have preferred to have a different side with it. The coconut brie we had for an appetizer was great as well as the soup we got with the meal (i believe it was called Altesian??, and it was AWESOME). For dessert I had a chocolate cake which was very decadent, and my wife had the Lillikoi cheesecake which was also great.
10/31/2013 5:00:00 PM
I always look forward to dinner at the Kilauea Lodge, as it offers the most unique foods on island. They will write a personal message on the menu for your special occasion, such as Happy Birthday. The service was excellent and allowed us a leisurely dinner. All four of us enjoyed our meals-lobster tails, the German sausage special, the lamb was perfect and the risotto was filled with a variety of mushrooms. The wine pairing on the menu was helpful. All in all, a wonderful evening. Can't wait to return 5 stars!

Cozy, Friendly and Elegant
If you are looking for outstanding food in a cozy, rustic atmosphere, this is the best place on the Big Island. Reminds me of some of the fine riverside restaraunts along the Deleware in the East Coast, or maybe one of the mountain hideaways in ski-country. I am especially fond of their New York Strip dinner and Wild game dishes. Delicious!

Excellent meal in the very small town of Volcano, Hawaii. About a 5 minute drive from the Volcano House and Visitor Center in the National Park. Really fine dining with excellent service. Reservations appear to be a must.

A Special Place
Kilauea Lodge is located in the middle of a rain forest and is totally unexpected. The menu is definitely one of a kind and the food is absolutely delicious. The wait staff is excellent. All in all, this is a restaurant not to be missed.

Gem in Volcano
This is the best bets for a nice meal in Volcano. They do a great job on meats/fish/protein and the unique location and ambience make it noteworthy. Although I ate dinner here, I have also had breakfast here which was delicious. They have many things on the menu you probably couldn't find anywhere else in Hawaii , making for a unique and memorable dining experience. Wonderful waitresses and service.
