Excellent food and ambiance.
Excellent food and ambiance. Sadly, my favorite Ethipian restaurant closed in NYC and made it a point to get to one in DC on my recent visit (actually, made the visit specifically for the Ethiopian food). Glad I made Ethipoic my choice.

Great Ethiopian food on H street.
This is truly great Ethiopian food (the best in DC I think) located conveniently (for Northeasters) on H street. Reasonably priced. Nice ambiance. Friendly waitstaff, and most importantly great food.

Great food, great service
A truly enjoyable dinner with friends. Three of us shared the veggie sampler II, the clay-pot lamb and beef berbere. Everything was fantastic. The sampler is huge, so be forewarned. The best Ethiopian food I've had, and I've had a lot! The service was exemplary as well. Our server even brought us samples of the Ethiopian wines when we asked about them. Service can often be bad in DC so having a friendly and attentive server was a treat. Ethopic is definitely highly recommended.

I've been to Ethiopic a few times, and every time I love it more than the last! Great place and the people are really nice!!

Consistently excellent Ethiopian!
Our party of five straggled in with the last one being almost an hour late. The staff was generous and patient with us...thanks! The food here is always delicious and it's fun to go with a group so you can try lots of dishes. The samplers are terrific! Additionally, our waitress was great and pointed us in the right direction when one of the group expressed a dietary restriction. While friendly and happy, our group was not low maintenance but the staff handled it very nicely.

Great service; brought samples
Great service; brought samples of the Ethiopian wine to try before ordering (in retrospect, would have stuck with the standard wine choices instead of sticking to the house specialties). Food was delicious.

great Ethiopian food!
A friend and I are trying all of DC's Ethiopian restaurants, and Ethiopic was a great choice! The staff were all very pleasant and the atmosphere was lovely. We sat in a window seat, which offered a little more privacy and quiet, because the place was busy on a Sunday night. We shared the seven-dish vegetarian sampler (SO GOOD) and the chickpea salad to start, which is definitely large enough for two or three people for a small appetizer salad. I would definitely go back here -- delicious!

Absolutely love Ethiopian food and this place did not disappoint!! Took my fiancé here for his first Ethiopian experience and he loved it!! I would definitely recommend this place again

Best Ethiopian Food Yet
We've been to many Ethiopian restaurants in the DC area and this one, is by far the best. The food is excellent. It's served hot, as it should be. The spices are right. And the ambiance is great, casual but nice enough for a special occasion.

Another Great Meal
We stuck to our favorites -- Fosolia, Awaze Tibs, Kitfo -- and weren't disappointed. And, as always, the service was fantastic.

My spouse and I met for lunch this past Saturday at Ethiopic.Being that the day was a triple 'H'(hazy, hot and humid)two local Ethiopian beers were ordered and delivered promptly and just as fast disappeared.
We ordered the Key Sir, a beet and onion salad and it was refreshing and slightly spicy-yum! Next, came the Kitfo, a beef tartar,I chose the raw method and it was delightful~~buttery with warm spicy undertones, and paired with the injera, heaven! Next, the Tibs with lamb, again, another hit! As a side, we split the vegetarian Miser Wot.The lunch price was $9, but the helpful server recommended the smaller side plate for $4, a perfect amount and it is refreshing to find a restaurant which caters to the diner, not just making more money.

I have been here twice. It was fantastic both time. The vegetable and meat samplers were great for a group of four. Its a wonderful way to have a social and fun dinner. I highly recommend this restaurant.

best Ethiopian food
This place has more veggie options than I have seen at other Ethiopian restaurants, love the veggie platter & the beet appetizer

Great food, way too much noise
Ethiopic has some of the best Ethiopian food we have ever had and at a good price. The vegetarian platter of various daals, tomatoes, a green bean based dish, cabbage and carrots, and some kind of delcious grain was fun and tasty. The bread was spongy and fresh, as it should be. The lamb dish, lamb nibs with jalapeños, was marvelous, as good as any lamb anywhere. The wine list is short and unnecessarily high priced, particularly given the more than reasonable food prices. The serious problem, though, was the deafening din. Dinners had to shout to make themselves heard across the table and the mostly young patrons did exactly that. There is no reason for restaurants to be horribly noisy...

A modern take on the classic
A modern take on the classic Ethiopian theme. Wonderful food, wonderful art. If you are brave enough, try the Kitfo, which is very high quality ground raw beef with a wonderful array of butter and spices.

Great Ethiopian food and classy atmosphere. The injera was not as sourdough-tasting as I prefer, but still good. The beef had a delicious flavor and you can get as mild or spicy as you like. Would definitely go again.

First TIme Ethiopian Food
It was my first time having Ethiopian food so I can't compare it to anything. I guess the bread that came before the main course is adapted to fit the western standard. It was fun eating with fingers! I don't particularly like the injera, but that's my personal taste. I don't think the food was spicy enough to be ethiopian though-this might also be adjusted so not to freak out those who can't handle spice. I ordered the signature lamb, which was cooked well with tomatoes, onions and jalapeños. A nice blend of flavors, especially since you can combine the amount every time.
The ambience is excellent: we sat in a small corner seat that is quiet and private. Sophisticated artwork all around. Overall I think the setting is very European.

Delicious and Fantastic Service
I had limited experience with Ethiopian cuisine prior to Ethiopic. However, a quick conversation with the server put me at ease. She asked good questions and made recommendations on what to order. Once the food came out, I realized that she had heard me and knew her menu. The food was delicious and perfect for my taste buds. The restaurant can be crowded and does get very loud. There are some nice tables by the windows, but if you're in a group of 4 or more, you'll probably end up in the open space. Plan on having a leisurely meal - the food invites you to linger and chat. A great experience.

We were having a small going-away party for some neighbors, and they won't get Ethiopian food where they are going. We shared the seven-item veggie platter -- our favorite -- and it was just excellent. Service is always attentive, but never intrusive. It's one of our favorite spots on H Street NE and we've been going there since it first opened. In fact, they helped cater my wife's 50th birthday party and their items were the smash hits.

Love sampler platters
I love Ethiopian food, but one of the issues I've found in DC so far is that many places don't offer a sampler platter (or at least, their online menus don't offer a sampler). I really like dragging new people to try Ethiopian food, but I like getting a little of each thing, rather than a full serving of an entree. They also have a raw beef dish that rocked my world--not for the faint of heart, but so good if you like a little adventure. Thanks for a great experience!
8/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
Ethiopic is a great place, friendliest staff you'll ever meet, and by far the most expensive Ethiopian food I've ever encountered, while sadly, not the best. Place is open and warm, great staff and service, but go elsewhere for the value. One 4 vegetarian sampler and a lamb tips and a couple glasses of wine with tip $80...I'll probably go elsewhere next time I want Ethiopian food, maybe Queen of Sheba on 9th or one of the countless others on U street.

Not using silverware is fun!
Loved everything about the experience! Food is so healthy and delicious. And it looks so pretty when they prepare it at the table. Will return!
8/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
This is a great Ethiopian restaurant! There is a diverse menu, and the food is prepared well. The sampler plates are a great way to try a bit of the restaurant's offerings.
8/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
I've been twice for dinner. The first time was on a weeknight in February 2013. The second time was on a Saturday night in August 2013. The food was superb each time, and the waiters were kind and attentive.
8/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
Oh, so delicious...
I have been craving Ethiopian for a few months and this new (for me) place satisfies on all fronts. Of particular note are the ethnic-artsy-charming heated bowls in which your food arrives and the elegant, table-side service of the entrees from serving dish to individual plate. Although the place got a bit noisy by the time we were finished, over all the experience was top notch.

Good Food / Friendly Service
Extensive menu (good vegetarian choices) and comfortable atmosphere make this a good choice for small groups. Prices are very reasonable; I've paid more for Ethiopian food of lesser quality.
8/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
Still our fav
Ethiopic still does some of the best Ethiopian food in the city for pretty reasonable prices. Hadn't been in a while but just had another quality dinner here and will definitely keep coming back. Veggie sampler 1 and beef tibs was more than enough for 2.5 people or 3 not starving people.
8/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
Nice food and atmosphere
Nice, clean place. Atmosphere felt fresh and new. Very friendly staff, very good food. Thanks!

Great Ethipion restaurant. The restaurant is great and it has a good service. Food is fresh and served to perfection. We try the fresh fried fish to accompany the big sample player and it was fresh and delicious.

Vegan friendly restaurant
Perfect neighborhood restaurant on H and vegan friendly.

One of my favorite places in DC!!!
I've had their vegetarian sampler both times I've come in the past two weeks. Super generous and I definitely have enough leftovers for TWO meals afterward, even with sharing this fish with a friend! Simply yummy. I say outside on the patio with my dog and they even brought her water. I will definitely come again.

Great Ethiopian food!
I've been here several times, and enjoy it each time. The service can sometimes be inconsistent, but don't let that deter you. The food is really good and it's quickly becoming one of the best places for Ethiopian food in DC.
The only draw back (for me) is that it's kid friendly, and it can sometimes be noisy and distracting when kids are present. I'm sure that's fine for most people, so it's entirely my issue. I prefer to be outside the earshot of children when I eat out.
9/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food was great and the staff was very friendly and accommodating. We've been several times and always enjoy it.

Birthday Dinner Fun
Reservation was easy and hostess was lovely. Refills were slow, but food and company more than made up for it!
Bonus at the end when 3 waitresses surprised me by singing Happy Birthday and bringing out two pieces of honey soaked baklava to share.
9/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
I've been here several times and have never been disappointed. I think it's the best Ethiopian in the city.
9/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
Best Ethiopian I've had in DC--really flavorful and delicious. It was obvious the spices were fresh and carefully combined.
The service was very friendly, although it seemed our waitress was overextended and we had to ask a few times for more water and bread. But the atmosphere had a nice vibe and better decor than most Ethiopian restaurants--so overall a great experience.

We found the food very much
We found the food very much to our liking. It was enjoyable, energetic food. My wife had a chicken, egg and gravy dish. I had a beef dish with thick spicy sauce. We shared a vegetable sampler as well. Lots of flavors. Ethiopian beer is quite good also.
The portions are large. I took all of the leftovers and have been eating them for lunch.
The wait staff was cheerful and informative. An altogether excellent experience.
10/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
We had never been at an Ethiopian restaurant so we did not know what to expect. First of all when we got there, the reservation made through open Table less than an hour before worked beautifully. Our reserved table was right there, the best seats of the house. The food was very tasty and fresh, the flavors combinations were vibrant and interesting. From the moment you walk in you are captured by these incredible aromas. We certainly look forward to going back when in DC.

Excellent H Street Spot
Ethiopic is a great restaurant that really raises the bar for H Street dining. The food is always fresh and delicious, The service is attentive and not overbearing, and all the intangibles add up to a great dining experience time and time again. Get the lamb tibs!
10/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
Ethiopic is the best Ethiopian restaurant in DC. It's the reason I could get over the demise of Fasikas.

Wonderful evening with friends
We had a lovely Saturday night dinner in Ethiopic with friends who came over for the weekend to see us. Food was amazing and service was outstanding. We booked our table early in the week through Open Table and were very happy we did so, since this restaurant get very busy during dinner time ( especially on the weekends). We were seated in a tucked-away table, which gave us a little more privacy so we were able to talk and enjoy our quiet evening. We were pleasantly surprised how quiet is was at the area our table was located. Loved food, as usual, and would definitely come back again!

great food, great service. Basa was awesome. They took care care of us and noted that it was our anniversary.

Best Ethiopian Food In Town!
The food is indescribably delicious! One unique and rare find in this hot spot is the fish. It is an absolute must. Also try an order of vegetables. You don't have to be a vegetarian to enjoy the lentils, greens, potatoes, and tomato salad. It has a great atmosphere with consistent great customer service. Flexibility to serve groups up to12 or two. Also kid friendly, but I would recommend early in the evening if you must. Highly recommend making reservations, even for two. This is a gem of a spot and very popular. Enjoy, we did.

Very good Ethiopian food
Lovely decor, good service, reasonable price, and very good food. What's not to like?

I have been eating Ethiopian
I have been eating Ethiopian for years and love it! This restaurant offers the best of Ethiopian. A great place to introduce friends to the cuisine. Love the very warm atmosphere.

Ethiopic aka Yummy-liciousness
Ethiopic is an adorable little place. The ambiance is cozy and intimate, especially at night. The food is delicious, with a couple exceptions. I had the vegetarian sampler and I LOVE the yellow split peas... and my favorite is TIMATIM- a tomato salad with onions, lemon juice, jalepeno, and olive oil. I have never seen such beautiful tomatoes in all of my life --- even my friend who hates tomatoes enjoyed them. I was not a fan of the mesir wot, fosilia, or the chickpea dish (having an off night?). Overall, I'll be back because the food is usually amazing!
11/9/2013 4:00:00 PM
Great Ethiopian Food
Had a great dinner here, great food in an upscale setting. the vegetarian sampler platter 2, with 7 different items, with additional Fried fish on the side was more than enough for 2 people. Service friendly, highly recommended

A New Part of Town
I chose Ethiopic because it is in a part of town we had not been to before and neither of us had been to an Ethipian restaurant for a while. We got there at about 6 pm and found a parking space right away. I'm a vegetarian, so we had the veggie platter sampler. Everything was very good. My dining partner and I liked different items on the platter. The service was great. We had a window seat which was fun. Because I'm not supposed to eat much bread, I probably would opt for an individual portion and use a fork or spoon which is not what I would prefer, but... It was a fun evening.
11/14/2013 4:00:00 PM
Never had anything that wasn't yummy here -- just make sure that you enjoy Ethiopian cuisine. The dining room is casual, open, and airy with a corner location on H Street. Great for sharing dishes with friends.

Flavorful and filling
This was my first time having Ethiopian food, and I was impressed by everything about the restaurant and the cuisine. The staff was friendly and explained the menu. The food was very flavorful - I would recommend the veggie sampler with fish.
