I made reservations for my friend's birthday and was overwhelmingly happy. It was a amazing find. I recommend it as an alternative to the loud, crowded hip restaurants that are everywhere now. The food was perfect and the owner so friendly! Lovely evening and I already have reservations to return.

I came here for my birthday
I came here for my birthday dinner on Saturday and I loved it! It's a small restaurant, but it gave it a warm, cozy feel. The wine was wonderful (gotta love French wine!), and the food was delicious. Some people might think it's a little too salty, but my taste buds adore salt so I enjoyed it. The portions are French, not American, so don't expect a buffet -sized dinner portion. I definitely recommend the warm brie for an appetizer, the lamb for an entree and the dark chocolate with Grand Marnier for Dessert. Plus, the man (who I assume is the owner) is so sweet. He's very helpful with the wine list, and when my group of six were about to leave, he asked who's birthday it was and gave me a hug! You can tell he enjoys his job!

I thought the food was very good...but my guest and I felt that the serving was not a lot. The wine was pricey also. Other than that I enjoyed the place very much.

Perfect Dining Experience
My husband and I have dining at La Ripaille for 30 years. The fare is superb and the service is efficient, helpful, and courteous. The owner greets diners and assures that their dining experiences are gracious and memorable. Do not miss the broccoli mousse; you will find none better.

The owner greets you effusively and remains attentive all night. Broccoli mousse delicious, Nice wine list and best of all old world charm in a very lovely neighborhood. All good, would go again.

I needed a good, quiet restaurant for 7 to dine, a work dinner with international guests. The ambience was perfect, service efficient and friendly, and everyone was delighted with their food.

Nice Neighborhood Restaurant
We went there pre-theater with friends who had been here many years before and loved it. The service was excellent...relaxed and very efficient. My husband wasn't happy with one piece of his veal scallopine. He told the waiter and it was cooked again for him without hesitation. The food was great...very French and great flavors. We would definitely go back here again!

My friends and I went for brunch on Sunday. Great prix fixed deal with lots of options, delicious food, not a bit crowded. We stayed through them setting up for dinner, without issue. Fantastic restaurant - I will definitely be returning!

A memorable meal
It was our first visit and will not be our last! It was a treat for me for Mother's Day and we all enjoyed our meal and the service was exceptional! Everyone was very courteous and friendly. The food was amazing and delicious. Look forward to coming back again in the near future.

Nice French style spot
We had a nice experience at La Ripaille for Mother's day lunch : the room looks like an old French home dining room, the waiters are attentive, the service is pretty fast. The food is good with, of course, French specialties like Pâté au poivre vert. The scallops I had were delicious; my kids had the salmon which was really good, too. The dessert were ok.
It's a lovely place in a nice neighborhood.

One of the best meals I have ever had. Food was delicately prepared, interesting, and delicious.
5/11/2013 4:00:00 PM
The food was superb, especially the lobster ravioli in broth, a special that evening. The service was friendly and attentive without being intrusive.
What a great place for dinner. We will go again and again

Lovely French Restaurant
This is a first rate french restaurant in a great location in Greenwich Village. The service was friendly, attentive, and unhurried. The country pate was delicious as were the other appetizers. Two of us had the daily specials (veal in a wine/cream reduction sauce and a chicken breast stuffed with gruyere cheese) which were both very good - in the classic french style. We sat outside on a nice spring evening and the ambience and service made for a great evening.

Cozy, romantic spot!
For my husband's birthday, we were unable to dine at the original restaurant we had reservations at (due to getting there extremely late due to traffic). When looking for a backup restaurant, LaRipaille was willing to accommodate us immediately. The manager was extremely friendly, as were the rest of the wait staff. There was no attitude involved here. I knew we had chosen a great spot when I wanted to order everything the table sitting next to us was eating. It smelled delicious! And tasted delicious! My linguini and shrimp dish was outstanding and my husband's lamb dish was "the best lamb" he has ever ordered. Not being able to get into our first restaurant was a blessing in disguise!
5/22/2013 4:00:00 PM
French like it used to be
What a lovely throwback to when restaurants were about letting the customer have a good time! Great food, professional but unobtrusive serivce, great welcome from the owner. Always a pleasure here.
5/23/2013 4:00:00 PM
The atmosphere was elegant
The atmosphere was elegant and subdued (but jovial and not at all stiff), the service friendly, professional and gracious, and the food delicious. A great refuge from the blasting music, psychedelic-colored drinks and loud rantings too often found at even some of NY's "better" restaurants. A genuine delight!

Outstanding dining experience
Food absolutely first rate. French cuisine does not get any better.

Fantastic French Meal
Exceptional food; appropriately sized portions so you can enjoy all courses without getting full. Great care and thought on specials each day. Personalized service by proprietor since small but good for intimate romantic dinners.
Service impeccable - well trained and attentive without too much fuss.

Paris in Lower Manhattan
La Ripaille is a Paris Bistro hide-away in lower Manhattan. Upon entering you feel your in Paris. Small intimate restaurant with excellent food. Alain, the owner is an effusive and gregarious host. My wife and I have been coming to this restaurant for years and we have brought all of our family members here and all have enjoyed. Alain is very attentive to younger family members catering to their needs first so the adults can relax and enjoy the excellent food and drinks.

This was the perfect dining experience! We were greeted warmly as we walked in and that set the tone for the entire evening. The food & service was wonderful. Fabulous, we will be back!

La Ripaille consistently delivers
This was my third time at La Ripaille and once again was not disappointed. The food, service and overall ambience was outstanding. Definitely will be back

Great French Bistro
La Ripaille was chosen by a web search. It had gotten good reviews. So happy we went. It was early, so it was still quiet, but that made it easier to converse. It is a pretty place. The staff is friendly, welcoming, and professional. The food, however, was the real stand-out. We only tried one appetizer, but the pâté was delicious. My main course, "Shell Steak with an Au Poivre Sauce", was the best I have ever had...and I have ordered this several times in Paris and other NY restaurants. I cannot wait to go back to repeat this dinner! We also tried 2 desserts, both wonderful. To top all of this, the prices were fair...about $200 for the three of us to eat and drink wine to our heart's content! Not bad for a lovely NYC restaurant.

Exquisite from start to finish.
There's a very good reason why this restaurant has been here for as long as it has - they know exactly what they're doing. The food is flawlessly exquisite - every bit of it, every time I've been there, for everyone at the table. The atmosphere and service actually live up to the level of the food, infused with such genuine warmth and bonhomie that it seems to affect the patrons with the glow. This is the quintessential distillation of the experience of sharing a repast In good company. La Ripaille nourishes the soul as well as the body.

A delightful evening -- the food, the decor, the service, the owner!

Long Time Customer
I've known the owner, Alain since 1992 and La Ripaille remains one of my favorite french restaurants in the city to this day. It's particularly nice if you want to have a conversation without all the din of most newer restaurants opening around town. I've never been disappointed and that's saying something because I really hate mediocre food at any price. I need to have that "ooohhhhh.... ummmm" feeling if I'm going to spend good money on a meal and La Pipaille comes through!
8/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food and service!
My partner and I dined here on a Saturday night and it was an incredible experience. The staff were super nice and very helpful. Most everyone that worked there were French and they were very knowledgable and fun. We were greeted by an older french guy who immediately made us feel very welcomed. He suggested a red wine that we loved. We had the broccoli mousse as a starter and it was yummy. I also highly recommend for desert the crepes and Creme Brulee. I will definitely be going back!

Romantic & delicious anniversary
My wife and I were in NYC for a wedding, but happened to be there for our 26th anniversary. I asked some friends about their favorite romantic restaurant in NY and without hesitation, they recommended this place. They definitely steered us right!
We were there early on a Friday night, so we had most of the inside dining area to ourselves. They atmosphere was friendly and unpretentious. Service was excellent. The owner was a real charm and made some dinner recommendations that were perfect (the broccoli mousse and the salmon were incredible). After dinner, he suggested a white plum digestif made by his brother in France that was strong and delicious.
Highly recommend La Ripaille. If you're adventurous, follow the owner's suggestions!

I took my wife there for her birthday and we both loved the place. Service and food were excellent and very reasonably priced. We will be back.

A touch of France in NYC.
A touch of France in NYC. Food, service, price = first rate
9/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
"Faire Ripaille" roughly translates to "make a big feast, have a blast". And that's exactly what we did! The broccoli mousse was delightful, the scallops just the right amount of heat-hot, the gazpacho (!) perfect and with NO cilantro (aka evil weed) and the fish was delish. The quintessential Parisian lemon tart made an exquisite dessert. Our server encouraged me to practice my French. The boss was a charming host with a great sense of humor.
We will be back for sure!

Like in Paris
You'd be forgiven for thinking you had been transported to Paris if you suddenly woke up in La Ripaille. Seriously, the ambience is that perfect. Dining here is fun, if the food is a little unambitious. Good wine list, though, and prices are quite reasonable.

Luncheon on Hudson Street
Enjoyed my birthday lunch - the outdoor table was wonderful on a bright and sunny day. The budget was affordable to us all who are at different financial level. The service excellent with our needs filled right away and cheerfully. Food very good but we could only have the brunch.- which had lots of omelets. It was tres romantique and we will return for dinner in the evening.
9/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
We loved the comfortable feel of La Ripaille. On that sunny day we decided to eat on the little terrace outside, starting with a treat of Kir Royal. I ordered Mussels in white wine sauce with the thinest delicious french fries, my friend ordered ravioli. The friendly owner came to talk to us and offered us to try his emblematic appetizer : Mousse de Brocoli to share, so delicious we would have licked the plate!
The waitress was efficient and friendly, bringing bread and drinks before we had to ask, and extra plate when needed. We had Rose wine during lunch and for dessert a truly delicious lemon tart , a family recipe we were told! We were treated to a glass of Old Port at the end and 2 home made chocolate truffle when the check came!

The real thing
The enthusiasm and humor of Alan, the owner, who is very present as a host, is what raises the level of this little place from a decent, reasonably priced French bistro to an intimate and charming gem. The man cares and he truly loves his work.
He remembered me from a visit to his restaurant fully five years ago. I'm not that memorable, believe me, or that remarkable--he is.
And the food is good too, as was the wine.
10/4/2013 12:00:00 AM
We really enjoyed the quiet atmosphere of the restaurant. I especially appreciated being able to split our salad and our main course. Salad was delicious and beautifully presented, bow-tie pasta and salmon was very good. Our only complaint was that it was too dark to read the menu once the order was given and we asked for more light, the bigger candle was wonderful. I would return there in a heartbeat and definitely recommend the restaurant to friends.

A class act
Wonderful small restaurant with first-class food and service.
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
Marvelous from start to finish, top to bottom. I've walked by here 1000 times and finally went. Food is a bargain compared to the rest of the 'hood, and it is delicious and creative, and they have $40 wines as well as $400 bottles. I am a Francophile, but still, this place is the absolutely perfect neighborhood French bistro.
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
A special place
Everything they say about this place is true. Nice little French bistro with great food. You can't stay in the restaurant business in New York for 30+ years without doing something right. Recommended to us by someone eating here for 30 of those 30+ years as one of the few restaurants to be sure to hit on our visit to NY.

Love this place an old favorite of mine. Just used it for a luncheon meeting. Keep up the good work.

Most romantic little gem!
This place should be a must on any couple's trip to NYC! From the moment we stepped in, we were greeted warmly by the owner and staff. Service was really outstanding! We were served freshly warmed bread from the oven which made me feel right at home. We started with their signature broccoli mousse dish which was incredible! All I can describe it as was a burst of flavor! My tiger shrimp linguine was the best pasta I have ever had in my life, completely made from scratch and so fresh and flavorful. For dessert we had the creme brulee and the apple turnover pie, both incredible as well. To top off the wonderful experience, the ambience is so romantic, dimly lit with candles and decor from France. We will absolutely return on our next trip!

Lovely neighborhood restaurant. A little Paris in the West Village. We will be back.

Favorite restaurant EVER
I was speechless the moment I walked into the restaurant. It was a small restaurant, could be considered tiny. But, it was beautiful! The decor was amazing, the music definitely set the mood. I thought it was so romantic! It was definitely appropriate for a nice dinner with my boyfriend. We ordered the cream of mushroom soup (amazing: there was even a slice of mushroom in it!), mussels (very nice broth), risotto with truffle oil (boyfriend's choice), tiger shrimp linguini (my choice), creme brulee (boyfriend's) and homemade sorbet (mine). There was fresh bread in the beginning of the meal, as well. The service was amazing. The food was amazing. There is no way I wouldn't come back here again!

I had a wonderful experience at this restaurant. However, when the waiter asked to hang up my date's coat, her phone was stolen. She used the phone's GPS to find the restaurant, so we are fairly confident that it was taken while at the restaurant. I would recommend diners to avoid leaving items in their coat when they check it in; I would also recommend the restaurant take precautions to warn customers to keep their valuable belongings with them.
That being said, this was an absolutely wonderful dinner. The food was incredible. The ambiance was great. Even with her phone being stolen, my date has still maintained that it was a perfect evening. I wanted to treat her to a nice night out. It mostly was...
