great location to listen to the jazz on Fridays at LACMA, lovely cuisine especially the snapper! but the service was rather slow

Great upstart gem
Creative, exquisite combinations, happy and clean setting, cordial, efficient service... What is not to like?

The food was very good and the server knowledgeable. The service was extremely slow. The restaurant appeared understaffed, a problem we had had on a previous visit when the museum had a special event.

Ideal for a nice lunch at LACMA
Perfect location for people watching over lunch whilst you're at LACMA. The Pizza was OK, but it was outclassed by the small plates we ordered which were very, very good. Recommended.

lunch at Ray's
Exceptional lunch, unexpected for a museum restaurant. Would go there just for the lunch. Great service.
5/22/2013 4:00:00 PM
Great dinner at Ray's and Stark Bar. amazing service. yummy food. though a friend had some over seasoned meat.
favorite thing is the intimacy of the table spacing, did not hear a single person other than my dining companions. that was a treat in and of itself.

Wonderful restaurant to have
Wonderful restaurant to have a meal before attending the LACMA Turrell show.

Gracious and generous service
Our largely delicious meal had one dull entree, which was removed from our bill without our asking. We were sent away with smiles and extra little cookies! Perfect, and we'll be back...

Octopus are for hockey games.
Ray's and Stark is an "upper end eatery." I knew it when one of the hosts recommended the octopus and I said (being from Detroit) that octopus are only good for throwing on the ice during a hockey game. The host gave me a blank look. My wife quickly reminded me that we are not at a sports bar. The menu is varied and yet not pricey. The atmosphere is pleasant and relaxing, just right before viewing a new exhibit at the museum.

This is our third time have lunch or brunch at Ray's, and we just love the food, service & ambiance. It is incredibly nice to have a great restaurant at a Museum in LA instead of the usual disappointing fare at other cultural spots in the city. Hopefully, this is a trend that will spread in LA.

Great Food at reasonable price
menu was interesting. even though there are small plates, portion size is good enough to be share amongst 4 people. Amuse bouche was good. Service was spotty - waited for bread refill to the point of again requesting. Will definitely go back.

My husband and I decided to do a date nite, so off to LACMA for a movie: Everything Moves and dinner afterward. We were delightfully engaged by the movie and starving afterward. Wanted to order everything, but settled on the octopus salad, funghi pizza, and the out of this world grilled fava beans. Don't remember which beer of wine we had, but both really hit the spot. Had been to Bow and Truss for our anniversary and were so disappointed, wish we had gone to Ray's and Stark instead. It's out of our hood, but well worth the drive. Thanks for the great food and drink.

Octopus appetizer superb.
Octopus appetizer superb. Marrow pizza interesting and tasty but a bit oily.

High End Experience
Many museums are attempting to upgrade their dining venues, but Ray's at LACMA is truly succeeding. They definitely have a cutting edge adventurous menu (e.g. the beet salad had smoked duck gizzards and blackberries but it works). The service was extremely attentive and gracious (we had one diner who tried two wines and disliked both - no problem). The cocktails were very creative, many with unusual herb infusions. The only negative in my opinion is that the ambiance is a little too casual, but that may work well for lunch and we were there for dinner.
6/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
Amazing food, very special. The cocktails menu is extensive, with fresh inventive drinks. Great service, lovely food and LACMA...what could be better!

Parking was ridiculous. Valet would not take us. Why have restaurant name on valet stand?
6/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
Two foodies walk into ray and Stark bar and leave thoroughly satisfied with the food, beverages and service. No joke. We know dining experiences and ours was an A+.

Even when LACMA is closed
This is a great hot spot due to its central location for meeting freinds, Eastsiders and Westsiders can both make it over here without feeling the sole burden of a long drive. There is free parking after 7 pm. Its a loverly outdoor dining experience with great food and a friendly staff. We had pizza and wonderful salads. Even if the museum is closed you can see the wonderful Scott Burden street light installation. When LACMA is open, it so worth a visit and then dinner at Rays for a really fun day. Reserve a spot and enjoy. Good wine list too!

Not an unqualified "yes"
Good food, but fussy, inattentive, sometimes rude service.
6/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
Fun experience All around
Took my friend Sally out for her birthday....a little museum peeking, a nice dinner with many shared dishes, a walk to take away the stuffed feeling cuz the food was so good, and then a taste of jazz with a few thousand music lovers on the lawn. Really a memorable evening.

restaurant at LACMA
Since we were attending an exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, this was best (only) choice of restaurants in area of town that we were not familiar with. We were treated well, food was good and over all has a fine experience.

Classy Little Place
The service was excellent, and the food was good, but really pricey. It was for a special occasion, so we splurged and enjoyed it,
but would probably not eat there every time we go to LACMA. Nice atmosphere, though!

Fun, friendly, pretty food is very good nice stop when at lacma very glad it's there... A little pricey portions are very small but tasty

A Bar/Restaurant with Art
As for the restaurant, overall it was excellent. The pasta and the clames (two different dishes) were exceptional. In both there were hints of sweetness that took the taste to another realm. The side dishes blended quite well with the main ones. Again, because we have eatne there before, the servie was wonderful. I tip my hat to Paul, our waiter.
The drinks at Ray's bar, the restuarant and the bar are physically seperate are interesting and unique, each hand made with very individual tastes.

A glass of warm milk.
I went to Rays having invited several guests after the Sunday Live concert. They didn't show up so it was just me and my dyspeptic lady friend. Knowing how long it can take I asked for the fastest thing on the menu. They gave me smoked trout salad, yummy! And for my unhappy friend I ordered a glass of warm milk. That hit the spot too. I can't praise the service too much. It was really great triage.
7/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
This is probably the best
This is probably the best Dine LA menu of them all. Instead of the salmon, steak, chicken, pasta route most restaurants take when it comes to Dine LA prix fixe menus, Morningstar is much more creative, and delicious. Octopus starter and pork belly entrée were stand outs. I hope people took advantage of the Dine LA promo, because they will fine they'll return for regular meals.

Dinner and a Matisse
Where to meet another couple for dinner on a Saturday night where you can have some pre-meal time wandering around and talking? LACMA! We met at the lampposts and wandered through some of the galleries until our reservation time, and Rays's seated us immediately. The service was prompt, helpful, informative, and frequent, with lots of good recommendations on the menu and cocktail list. The food was terrific, but not out of this world great. We didn't have to yell to be heard, and we stayed for nearly 3 hours and never felt rushed. A really nice evening, we'll repeat it again.

Great Special Occasion Restaurant
Not within our budget for everyday dining, but Ray's has excellent food, good service and not a lot of noise.

Don't be scared by the adventurous sounding menu...it's all good!

Always wonderful -- lots of kids!
We have been to Ray's numerous times, and it's one of our favorite places. The food is always fantastic! We had octopus with fried broccoli and burrata cheese; a chopped salad of various greens, cheese, chickpeas and salami; charred fava beans! Toffee, apples and ice cream for dessert. Don't believe this isn't a good place for kids. They have fantastic bread, pizzas, and lots of other things kids would like. Martin is always charming and wear monogrammed shirts. It's a fun place!

Culture and cuisine
LACMA plus Ray's/Stark Bar equals a great day of culture and cuisine!

Duck on bed of beans and grains
Let me start by saying, I love this restaurant. The meal I had was dry. I have the duck breast, which was cooked just right. However, they served it in a bed of beans and grains. There was no sauce whatsoever - which the plate sorely needed. It would be so easy to allow for some moisture in this otherwise dry combination. I ended up not eating a good portion of the beans - not pleasant to have such a dry dish.

LACMA JAZZ EVENING
Outstanding menu items. Three of us split our bill and what a bargain it was for superb food, service and ambiance. We even had a great bottle of Rose which was served chilled in a standing bucket. This is an overlooked gem which is right here in our midst.

Food is fabulous, but as a "mostly vegan", I needed a few more choices.
8/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food choices here are quite eclectic. Perhaps it has more of a European flair. I was not happy with the food choices, portions or the amount of money I had to pay for them. I will only go there for drinks not food.
9/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food is unusual and interesting. And delicious.

Great museum restaurant!
I had heard great things about Ray's and as a fan of LACMA I am glad to say it lives up to its hype. My sister and I each had a delicious pasta and glass of wine and then enjoyed the James Turrell retrospective. Great to be able to do both in one place.

Perfect Mid-Wilshire Dining
This is my go-to spot for drinks and lunch meetings, since I work in the neighborhood. A perfect al fresco dining spot 90% of the time, thanks to great Los Angeles weather. The food is up to par, and the service is pretty accommodating.

Dinner and Jazz Night
It was Jazz night at LACMA and the restaurant was very busy which made service a little slow and the restaurant a little loud but the food was delicious and the ambiance was fantastic!
10/4/2013 12:00:00 AM
My party had to change our reservations from a downer to a late lunch..." no, problem!"
One of my guests was unhappy sitting under an air vent....." nor elm, where would you prefer?"
Thanks for an enjoyable time.

Food great, service slow
It was a chilly night but they did not have their heat lamps out, so we ate inside. Only 2 other tables were filled. Our waitress was very nice and answered our questions and consulted with the bartender for particular descriptions.
Not sure why the food came so late, but they apologized and gave us some cookies in a box to go. The food was wonderful but we had to eat quickly because we had a specific time for an exhibit.
A discount on the bill would have been appreciated more than cookies.

Fun stop at LACMA
This was a complete surprise. When I made the reservation I thought this was located on the center court, but was pleasantly surprised to find on the plaza betweeen the Ahamanson and Resnick pavillions. very creative menu, superb service. I did find it humerous and "so LA" to have a water menu! The waiter attempting to adapt wine terminology toward water was pretty funny.
A little expensive for the average lunch, but a great treat on the occaisional visit to LACMA and a great way to start the day beofre hitting the exhibits at the museum.

Fun at LACMA
I spent the day with friends at LACMA enjoying art and the great cocktails at Stark Bar. It's a fun outside atmosphere. The bar is a little slow to bring drinks but the cocktails are exceptional. We finished the day with dinner at Ray's. The food was very good, if not particularly creative. I had hangar steak that was a perfect medium rare with just the right amount of little onions, potatoes, and some sort of purée to add flavor. The desserts were not great. We did enjoy the homemade Oreo style cookies, though. Overall a pleasant evening out with friends.
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
The environment is very simple and chic, hip and cool.
The menu is very eclectic, with selections to suit both the traditionalist and the adventuresome.
The perfect place to stop for a delightful dining experience, after a leisurely stroll through the exciting exhibits at LACMA.
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
Hard to best this as a place to get a very good dinner (or lunch) when visiting the LA County Museum of Art (or the neighborhood around the Museum.)
11/15/2013 4:00:00 PM
It was a cool evening, but inside was warm -- actually too warm. Think they left the heater on high. But the ambiance was pleasant, we were a large group - 8 - and could hear each other. We shared dishes and they were all good. Cocktails were expensive and not so great, but the recommended bottle of wine was very good.
Service was very very slow - but maybe they thought we wanted time to talk. Which we did. If my husband had been there - and not a group of people who hadn't seen each other in a long time -- he would have been antsy and annoyed. Maybe they would have stepped it up for him.
11/20/2013 4:00:00 PM
We had a wonderful lunch there. The menu seems quite creative with many unusual dishes- some prepared in uncommon ways. The restaurant's experimentation & creativity was appreciated!
11/21/2013 4:00:00 PM
With such a wonderfully varied menu it was a challenge to select just the right combination of dishes for lunch, but we succeeded by sharing a delicious appetizer of green beans followed by individual choices from the Small Plates selections. The handmade cocktails added to our overall enjoyment, and simply reading the humorous quotations included in the bar menu makes for good conversation. Not only was the overall service perfect, but the fact that Ray's has its own Water Sommelier, happy to suggest the appropriate choice from an incredibly diverse international selection of waters, elevated the restaurant to the absolute top of our list!
It was a treat from beginning to end!
