My husband and I go to Alchemy once a year to celebrate our July wedding anniversary. We always get a cozy table. Our server was very attentive from the moment we sat down. We ordered the halibut and swordfish specials. So unbelievable delicious. We have never had a bad experience coming here and look forward to many more years of celebrating here. I have nothing negative to say except I was so full I couldn't really enjoy the strawberry shortcake we ordered for dessert.

Our waitress seemed to be
Our waitress seemed to be there any time we needed anything. Her pleasant manner and quick smile made us feel welcome. The food was fine. Our reserved table was ready. The restaurant was cozy. We can count on Alchemy for a great meal and perfect service.

For these Boston foodies it was a very pleasant surprise to find this gem in Gloucester. Lovely ambience, imaginative dishes (be sure to try the grilled octopus starter), fresh ingredients, friendly and knowledgeable server, fine wine selections by the glass or bottle and a lovely innovative cocktail to begin with.

Best meal I've had all year
We went for a day in Cape Ann and I'm so glad we chose to have dinner at Alchemy. The waitress, Stephanie, was great and steered us towards fantastic specials (perfectly done surf and turf; striped bass with spicy tika masala sauce and Moroccan potato salad that is the best, freshest flavor I've sampled all year). The scallop appetizer was delectable - I didn't know scallops could taste so good.
Love the ambiance of this place - it was busy but pleasantly so, and managed to be both hip and cozy at the same time. I definitely plan on returning next time we're in the area. Heck, if I owned a car I would make the hour-long drive from Boston on a regular basis, this place is that good! Also, don't leave without trying the bread pudding.

Felicia-best mixologist on Cape Ann
No wonder Felicia, Alchemy's bar tender, won the Gloucester mixologist contest last week - she is the best. Alchemy has the most creative drinks on the North Shore. It is no exaggeration that their Pisco Sour keeps drawing us back - flambé and all.
The food happens to be top notch. The gnocchi is getting even better with the addition of tomatoes and the pulled pork is always great.
We would like to see a few more Tapas items on the menu. They might want to consider some of the items at their sister restaurant - OPUS , which just opened in Salem.
Alchemy has the friendliest wait staff anywhere. We particularly like Erika.
What more could you ask - good drinks, great food and wonderful service. It makes Alchemy a neighborhood gem.

Superb From Start to Finish
After a warm and friendly welcome our host, Danny, offered us our choice of tables in two different rooms in the spacious dining area. We chose the quieter option in a cosy room next to a large round table where a party of eight was celebrating. We started with a "Perfect Storm" cocktail - a take-off on a Dark and Stormy and a perfectly executed Negroni. The salad of duck leg confit and fresh figs was beautifully presented and delicious, the small plate of tender, well cooked octopus with capers was flavorful, and the barbecued ribs were extraordinary - slow cooked perfection with a smokey, mustardy sauce that enhanced rather than overwhelmed the meaty goodness. Cornbread/corn pudding and tasty coleslaw were succulent accompaniments. Bravo

Pork moffongo was tasty , too.

Great place in Gloucester
Really enjoyed celebrating our anniversary at Alchemy. The food was excellent and we were treated like valuable customers. My only disappointment was they no longer carried the ceviche advertised on the website.

Seafood Risotto - foodie delight
Great way to start a night - two Pisco Sours bruleed to perfection. Where else can you get such a concoction? Follow this up
with gnocchi and seafood risotto and you have both a satisfied sea food lover and vegetarian. For our money, Alchemy's seafood
Is far superior to Latitude 43, down the street. My wife had a seafood stew for lunch at Latitude and asked the waiter - where is the seafood? To which he replied: "it's in there somewhere." A previous visit was equally disappointing.

We have been to Alchemy several times since we discovered it, and always are pleased. The food is as local as possible, and very well-prepared. Alchemy is not quite on the main drag - there is no view. But it's right around the corner from Gloucester harbor, and an easy walk if you are parked there. Service is friendly and pleasant. Our server two weeks ago offered me a discount card, which I handed to our server several days ago - and immediately I got my (fairly expensive) appetizer for free! This is discount card which is worth carrying. Highly recommended.

Our party of 7 had great meal including our 8 month old who was treated as equal guest.

Wonderful Evening Out
This is a gem in Gloucester! The entire meal was fantastic from start to finish; from the welcoming wait staff to the amazing food. Totally loved Alchemy Cafe! I wish I lived closer as this would be a place I would frequent.

Awesome humus and great brunch
This was my second time in two years and is as good as I remember it: great food and awesome service. Can't go wrong with this place!

We were seated next to a large
We were seated next to a large table with several noisy patrons. We asked to change tables, but there was not another available. Soon after our apps were served, another patron joined this already overcrowded table. When another table opened up, our server and host moved us to another table without us asking - we appreciated this thoughtfulness. The food was very good with generous portions. Interesting mix of menu choices and some great specials. We'll go back.

Unusual presentation and menu. Delicious. We'll be back
8/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
The alchemy certainly happens at this bistro. The cocktail menu is a collection of fun, unique, delicious libations, one of which was literally on fire. The food menu is a nice combination of small plates & entrees, again unique & delicious. We ordered 7 different dishes and shared them all; every one was notable. The staff is friendly & attentive & made us feel like like regulars. This was our first time, but we'll definitely be back. Thanks alchemists!
8/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
Had dinner here before heading to a show up in Rockport. Food was outstanding and the waitstaff just as good. We shared several small plates before our entrees and everyone at the table loved the food.

Creative cuisiine and well-prepared
Delicate, elegant preparations! Wonderful addition to the Gloucester restaurant scene!

Top Shelf Tapas in Gloucester
Nice combination of excellent tapas, great salads (the heirloom tomatoes were excellent), and even a burger for the non-adventureous. The Tuna Poke on glass noodles tapas is smashing, nice sized and with just a wee touch of a great tasting, after kick. Gnocchi with basil pesto sauce is perfect. Scallop fritto misto was good, but not as memorable as the tuna poke. Will return to try other plates. Wide selection, but less than the Opus restaurant run by the same restaurant group. Servers were friendly, cheerful ,very helpful and kept water glasses full. Don't hesitate to be thrilled by this restaurant. (There is a generous, frequent eater, loyalty card program good across the several different restaurants run by this restaurant group. )

Great night out!
First time here. We had a great time. Friendly bartender, fabulous waiter (Joe), and great meals. Joe was very attentive, energetic, and helpful in our menu selection. You MUST try the dates/blue cheese/bacon app - it's like a great piece of chocolate. We will definitely return soon.
8/29/2013 5:00:00 PM
My wife and I really enjoyed our first visit to Alchemy Cafe and Bistro (dinner). All positive reviews we read upfront got confirmed. Awesome food, excellent service in a friendly and cozy environment.

A favorite eatery in Gloucestet!!
Interesting cocktails, competent and friendly service, and good food! The mussels were delicious.
We always stop by alchemy when in Gloucester and are never disappointed.

Nice surprise in Gloucester
We were happily surprised to find this gem in Gloucester-- a cozy, beckoning atmosphere in an old building with loads of character-- alcoves and intimate spaces to accommodate groups of any size. The menu appealed with both small plates and entrees. The food was delicious. The Radicchio salad and the Mofongo were a great combination with the light sweet/sour dressing cooling the heat from the spicy pork. Many wonderful flavors going on in all the food we tried. Most importantly, our server was very knowledgeable and helpful without putting on a show of it. There was a nice selection of wines to accompany our dishes in a very reasonable price range.
9/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
Truly, a special restaurant. Terrific food. Great service. Overall, an excellent experience. I highly recommend and would go back.
9/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
They had gluten free options
They had gluten free options which was a plus. Nice atmosphere, friendly staff and enough selections to make it work for vegetarians.
9/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food and great service
Our server, Ben, was wonderful. His recommendations were spot on. The food and drinks were out of this world and he even gave us the recipe for our favorite drink. We will be going back every time we are on Cape Ann.
9/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
Dined here twice in three
Dined here twice in three days on vacation. Fabulous food.

We had been to Alchemy once
We had been to Alchemy once before and weren't impressed, but this time the food was delicious and the service very nice - perhaps they have changed something, but now we will go back for sure. Gloucester needs some more good restaurants - glad that Alchemy is now on the list !

Great place,treats you like royalty
My husband and I went here for our 2nd year anniversary and it was just perfect. We were seated in a quiet corner which made it so personal and romantic. From the moment we sat down we were treated with such royalty. The head server/manager Erica came over and made us feel very special. There wasn't a moment she didn't make sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. To our surprise she came over and brought us a glass of champagne and told us we couldn't celebrate our 2nd year anniversary without a toast, this made such an impression on us. No one has ever given us this kind of treatment before. Erica was very friendly, bubbly and such a pleasure to be around, we enjoyed her very much and will definitely go back again.
9/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food, slow service
The menu was outstanding. We loved what we ordered, and we will definitely be returning to try other things. Like other reviewers noted, the service was definitely on the slow side, and our server forgot one of our starters.
9/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
Love this place!
Excellent service and amazing food and drink!! All staff were incredibly helpful and friendly. They knew the menu well and gave great recommendations. Highly recommend for special occasions.
9/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
We had excellent food, personable service and terrific entertainment! Note: The portion of duck serviced was HUGE!
9/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Highly knowledgeable Wait Staff
Alchemy has, in my judgement, a highly unusual attribute - the wait staff really know the menu - they have no need to consult notes - they know it cold and have eaten it too. This gives the customer a lot of confidence. Congratulations to Erica on her move to Opus - unfortunate for Alchemy regulars!!!
There are some great additions to the fall menu -- and of course, Felicia's Pisco Sour is the drink of choice.

Excellent Choice in Gloucester
Alchemy is one of my favorite restaurants in Gloucester. Whether you come for brunch or dinner the menu always offers interesting choices and the food is always excellent . Service is also excellent. The decor is eclectic and interesting. It can be a little bit loud in places, but it isn't bad,

First Visit to Alchemy
My first visit to Alchemy was on a Wednesday night. Arrived at 7pm and was seated right away (my reservation was for 7:15pm). Had a great table, an unusual menu but I was delighted, it was perhaps more European and I thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend the mushroom streudel and Duck Cassoulet. There was a musician playing guitar and singing and he was very very good. Our server, Stephanie, was a delight and overall I look forward to many more evenings there.

Nice night out
We took our son out for a special dinner as he was home for a weekend from college. the food was excellent, but most memorable were the mussels appetizer and the pan seared scallop dinner. Both were delicious.
10/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
I stub led upon this restaurant last year and we had a great time at the bar for dinner and drinks. We drove an hour each way to go back again. This time we made reservations and sat at a table. It was noisy due to two large parties of 15 pear each.
The food and service did not disappoint.
10/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
We had Sunday brunch. Bloody
We had Sunday brunch. Bloody Mary's were terrific! BLTA, Sundried Tomato Omelette, and Granola pancakes were all outstanding.
Cozy atmosphere and friendly service make this a real gem! One hour drive was worth it. Will return.
10/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
My wife and I enjoyed Alchemy, a warmly lit, cozy spot on a cool autumn Sunday evening.Casual seating and intimate dining with attentive service and a staff who really seem appreciative that you've come. Fried artichokes as an appetizer and the warm bread served with infused olive oil were terrific starters. We had delectable scallops and a wonderful white-bean cassoulet with pheasant sausage, pork belly, and duck. Too full for dessert but they also looked amazing. We're going back whenever we're in Gloucester!
10/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
We enjoyed the cozy comfort, the good service and a wonderful selection of delicious small plates, which we shared. The wine list is comprehensive and spans the price range from very reasonable to expensive. The whole experience was very positive, the bill reasonable at a little less than $100 for two.
10/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
SO WORTH THE 2 HOUR DRIVE (R/T)
My wife and I drove all of 57 minutes to try Alchemy last night. I am happy to report it was soo worth the 2 hour drive (round trip). The decor was very hip, service very good, drinks very well thought out, but the FOOD WAS LIGHTS OUT. Pokbelly tacos was the app after the hostess overheard me mention it and she commented how phenomenal they were. Duck Breast Poutine was ABSOLUTELY THE BEST POUTINE I EVER HAD, AND AM NOW A DUCK JUNKIE. (first time I ever had Duck!!!!) Wife had Prvoencal Cassoulette pheasant sausage, pork belly, tomatoes white beans onions and a duck leg, soooo good. My wife commented how some of friends would love Alchemy I said well call them and meet up tomorrow. FOOD IS THAT GOOD!!!
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
The brunch menu was amazing! Great atmosphere and helpful staff! Cute, hidden gem :) well worth the trip!

Alchemy continues tobe one
Alchemy continues tobe one of our favorite dining spots on the North Shore and worth the drive. Innovative and changing menus reflect the seasons and local available ingredients, creative drinks and wine list also shows thoughtful consideration of the experience. The only critique may be in the training the hostesses receive as on more than one occasion have been forgotten at the bar while waiiting for the Opentable reservation to be honored or a special seating request to be acted on.
We will be back.
10/24/2013 5:00:00 PM
A duck night
It was a relaxed evening at Alchemy..We had beautiful radiccio salads and she had the duck pot pie..perfectly cooked with a tasty piece of pastry covering it..I had the duck poutine ..really a superb presentation of rare smoky duck with frites and duck gravy. This is a serious dish fit for a hungry person. The bread pudding was spectacular, literally dripping in maple syrup.

Saturday before the show
Our group of 5 tried a wide variety of menu items and everything was delicious. Tofu, pork tenderloin special, salmon, beef filet, and the roast duck were all fabulous. We'll return.

YUMMY AND COMFY
THE AMBIANCE AND LIGHT MEAL WE HAD BEFORE A CONCERT IN THE REGION WERE WONDERFUL. OUR WAITRESS (SORRY I FORGOT HER NAME) WAS EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD. HAD BEEN THERE A FEW X FOR LUNCH, AND DINNER WAS JUST AS TASTY.
10/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
We loved the food ! So good and creative and good portions! Great service! Will go back!
11/3/2013 4:00:00 PM
My wife and I went here for our 1st anniversary dinner. We got a little nook called the cave. What a great night!! Food was amazing, staff was great...we couldn't be any happier and will be back!!

Alchemy is a hit!
We ate small plates at our first visit to Alchemy. What variety and how tasty! We loved the beet salad. I had an unusual pulled pork Mexican dish that had shrimp too and was incredibly delicious. Interesting beer choices. My husband was delighted to find cod cheeks. We shared a very delicious Caesar salad. We went on a Saturday night around 6:30 and it was already hopping. Plus we had to be somewhere for a performance. I would prefer to try Alchemy again when they and we were at a more leisurely pace. We did not have dessert - no time. Would love to try next time.
