My husband and I came here
My husband and I came here for Easter brunch. I had hoped the options would be a little more extensive since they advertised a "special menu," but the only addition was steak and eggs. I went with the Grand Marshal Benedict and it was amazing. The Bloody Mary's were perfectly spicy. The only downside was that our server initially forgot to bring us our drinks which also left us unable to order our food, but once she came back the service was great.

The food at the Bayou is excellent.
The food at the Bayou is excellent. We ate upstairs to hear the music.
As the night went on it became a crazy scene of standing room only and super loud!
Be prepared and wear ear plugs if you want to keep your hearing~

The drinks and food are great.
The drinks and food are great. Shrimp and grits were wonderful. The BBQ shrimp po'boy is a bit odd, though, because the bread is hollowed out, shrimp are inside, and the whole thing is swimming in the sauce. An interesting take on NOLa BBQ shrimp in a po'boy format, but not something I'd eat again.

A great destination
I highly recommend trying Bayou on Penn for the food and atmosphere.

Very welcoming! The hostess
Very welcoming! The hostess had us seated upstairs near the bar but it was way to noisy for us so she happily moved us to a table downstairs. The wait staff were very helpful and polite. The food outstanding!!!!! Looking forward to our next trip to DC so may enjoy more of their increditable food!

It is so hard to find quality Cajun food in DC. Bayou on Penn solves that problem!! I went with my Godmother to celebrate my birthday, and was WOWED by not just the amazing service (and it was our server's first day!), but the superb quality of the food. Be sure to try the crawfish/andouille cheesecake--sounds weird, but your taste buds will thank you eternally. Truly just amazing food and service. That was my first time there, but I will most definitely be back--I've already told all of my friends!

LOVE LOVE BAYOU
This was not the first time we have been to Bayou but it was definitely the best. Everyime we go it just gets better and better, which is hard to belive because it is so good! Our waiter, John, was outstanding and because of him we actually ordered food we may not have. The mushroom bacon soup should be on the menu always! If they have it, order it! Loved the fried green tomatoes and you can never go wrong with their mac n cheese. The only problem here is that they only give you one biscuit per customer at the table, and you have to wait a while before they bring you more! They should just bring at least two per person, save the time later. It's a little pricey so we rarely get drinks with our meal, but the food is always delicious.

Great food and drinks
Had excellent meal at bayou. All three courses were good, especially the fried chicken with mustard sauce. Sunday night dining so not too noisy. Only downside I would say service was too speedy we were through the meal in just over an hour so not really enough time between courses.

Lots of fun
Food is good, but equivalent to pub grub. The Bayou has a great atmosphere - good value.

My husband and I had an early dinner at Bayou on Penn and we were both pleasantly surprised. The food was loaded with flavor and the drinks were absolutely amazing. He had seafood creole and I wanted to be adventurous so I tried the shrimp and grits (I never eat grits). To my surprise, this dish is now on my list of must haves after trying it at Bayou. The only issue we had was not with the restaurant but parking in the area. We were not very familiar with the area so finding parking was a pain. We drove around a bit and found a space a short walk away; it was worth it!

Went on a Wednesday night
Went on a Wednesday night for dinner. Excellent service, staff was quite attentive. Oysters are pretty good. Main course was shrimp and grits, good portion size, fulfilling and satisfying. Would recommend to anyone interested in a little New Orleans food.

Yvonne's Birthday Bash
Had a wonderful time for my Birthday celebration in July 2013 at this restaurant. The food was Delicious, I had the Blackened Catfish, it was not as blackened (dark) as I wanted but enjoyed the meal. The Collard Greens were Awesome!

Casual/fun atmosphere - Great food
We found this restaurant on OpenTable as a last minute switch over since Founding Farmer's was booked up. We were pleasantly surprised! The decor and atmosphere is casual, relaxed and fun. Definitely reminds you of an authentic New Orleans casual dining spot with the decor and the food was surprisingly delicious. It's New Orleans food with a bit of an upgrade.
We tried the fried green tomatoes, mussels, arugula salad, fried and boiled shrimp po'boys and shrimp and grits. All delish!!
Will definitely go back!

Delicious po boys (fried green tomatoes and shrimp)! Great service. And the cajun fries, too good. Quiet pleasant upstairs table. A perfect choice for lunch before a matinee performance at the Kennedy Center.

have always liked bayou, th efood is authentic the service is always respnsive and cordial, been here many times and never disappointed

This was my first time at Bayou and I was delighted to see it has a NOLA (New Orleans, Louisiana) feeling and impressions! The food is very yummy and very close to Cajun cuisine. The Hurricanes were smaller than what I remember however they still packed a "punch". A strange thing also happened there, I got ENGAGED at Bayou. The owner treated us with a free bottle of champagne and a dessert to share, too !!!!

We booked with a large party and got served very pleasantly and efficiently. Loved my salmon! Tuna was also a hit. Biscuits to die for.

Delicious Cajun Experience
We've bad three great experiences at Bayou on Penn. Consistently great food!
8/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
We went for Sunday dinner, food was awesome! Service was a bit slow, drinks were good, tables with benches very rustic

Attention Kennedy Center Patrons!
There are so few restaurants within walking distance of the Kennedy Center. Bayou is just a few blocks away, and it's an excellent option. The food is very good and reasonably priced, the cocktails are potent, and on Sunday, bottles of wine are half price!

Great Service and brunch
We arrived at Bayou and were greeted like royalty. Our service was great but the outstanding part was the Grand Marshall brunch: Eggs Benedict with fried green tomato, tasso ham, fried oyster and english muffan! WOW. We have been to Bayou many times and it is always consistent. WARNING: Only eat here if you like great food!!!
8/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
Eating at Bayou is as close to Louisiana without actually being there. I tend to stay with traditional Gumbo, Jambalaya and fried oysters, however the seared Tuna is also a favorite. It's a challenge to find a dark and stormy in DC, and Bayou does Gosling justice

Cajun Date night
My wife and I decide to go to Bayou in hope of having some great New Oreleans style dishes. We were not dissappointed . The food was excellent, the staff was friendly and the drinks were awesome. I would reccommend the Shrimp and Grits and a Transfusion from the bar to anyone who stops here for a bite.

Good Experience but Pricey
I thought Bayou was good. Service was really friendly, and food was tasty.
My one criticism is that you can not order Po-Boys on their own i.e. you have to order the Po' Boy platter with two sides. At least we were told this by our waiter. According to the menu online it would suggest that one could order Po'Boys a'la Carte. This is rather ridiculous and makes me feel that it is a simple ploy to charge people more for their meal. Po' Boy platters range from $17-$19, include a drink and your sitting at $25, excluding tip and tax. For $30 odd dollars this isn't a place where one would get a bang for their buck. Also Happy Hour is only offered at the bar, which I find weird given DC's strong happy hour scene.

New Orleans-style food & feel
Bayou was a great find for a upscale casual and delicious meal with New Orleans ambiance. The salmon with smoked bacon lentils was phenomenal as was the house special of roast chicken, grits and collards. We also enjoyed the house-recommended bread pudding. Definitely looking forward to going back late enough that the weekend live music is playing! Price is what you'd expect for the area. Expect to pay ~$20 for a dinner entree. And the noise level was bustling without getting in the way of a good conversation.

Great food selection. Open table made it so easy to make a reservation. I will be there again and using open table. A++

Taste of N'Awluns in Foggy Bottom
The One Step Down is long gone, but this small tasty place is very generous. Order a cocktail and you won't be disappointed. The food was all fresh, well seasoned (spicy), and plentiful. What more could you want in a place that has everything from authentic gumbo to jumbalaya, seafood creole, and all kinds of po' boys. I'm definitely going back to try more of the menu.

Nawlins in DC
What a find! We were looking for a Louisiana-style restaurant to celebrate a friend's birthday and decided on the Bayou. It was the perfect place and the food was absolutely divine! My friend is now making this his number one place for catfish and red beans and rice! Thoroughly enjoyed the food selections and service.

Like this place
A good neighborhood spot for casual dining, New Orleans themes with a bit of sports bar mixed in. They make a mean Sazerac cocktail too! Shrimp and Grits is a favorite. Weeknights are preferred; less crowded.

New Favorite in Town
This is a rare place. For the first time outside of NOLA, I felt like I was eating in NOLA instead of a Disneyfied version of NOLA.
It's not JUST the food - spot on gumbo, jambalaya, fried chicken, shrimp & grits, po-boys.
It's not JUST the perfect sazeracs, hurricanes or dark & stormies.
It 's not JUST the soundtrack playing back the history of NOLA music.
It's not JUST the warm and knowledgeable service.
It's how these elements come together to create the kind of ambiance that's missing from most restaurants in DC. It's how dim lights combine with the perfect buzz & a full belly to make a world so pleasantly out of synch with the one you left out on Pennsylvania Avenue. You might wish it could be your world forever.
