this was our first time at
this was our first time at Chappeau! We loved the food, but had to wait 25 min for our reservation. Normally we would not care, but this was a birthday dinner and so the wait was unfortunate. The restaurant was uncomfortably hot and stuffy. Luckily, the food was excellent. We would return, but probably not on a Sat night. I rated the ambience low because of the stuffiness and heat. It is a very pleasant space and lovely for dining, so if it weren't for the overheated restaurant, I would have rated the ambience excellent.

Best restaurant I have been
Best restaurant I have been to in the last year! Fabulous!

Couldnt have asked for a more perfect experience. From the moment we walked in, to when Chef Phillipe came and personally welcomed us, and escorted us out at the end, it was all amazing. My boyfriend and I came for our anniversary and this was everything I wanted and more. Romantic, cozy, delicious is how I would sum up this experience. Thank you Chapeau!

very difficult to park . We must have spend half -hour to find a parking space. We waited a little to long for our main course. Although the crowd attested to the quality of the restaurant we would have preferred it to be quieter.

Killer French Restaurant
For the quality and service, this restaurant is unparalleled. The menu is dynamic and beautifully executed, and the chef clearly composes his dishes to please; they serve haute cuisine, but without the pretension and small portion size. For the price, I had no idea the level of service would be so high. This is the type of restaurant where the waiter will show you your steak before cooking it. My only gripe is that I showed up completely blazed and wasn't quite prepared for the roller coaster of fine dining in store for me.

Delicious as always
We took our friends from Washington D.C. They had just returned from France and were happy to see their favorite French wine on the wine list. I had the fish tasting menu - and it was delicious. It is also very nice to be greeted by the owner who is genuinely pleased to welcome all of the patrons.

One of Our Favorites
The French food at this restaurant is always delicious and affordable. The service is impeccable but not overbearing. While the tables are close together, the noise level is low making conversation easy. We can always count on consistent quality of the food and service. The chef-owner frequently makes the rounds talking to the customers.

Celebrating our wedding anniversary. Everyone at Chapeau gave us an anniversary greeting! The service was surperb,, the food excellent. We got here between 5-6pm for the early bird special...$32.95 for a prix fixed three coursed meal. i had escargot and I always order the duck breast, my favorite, cooked to perfection. My husband ordered the mussels and had the trio of salmon for appetizer. Everything was delicious. Dessert was French toast and basil Napoleon. Yum!
8/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
Many course options
I had the 4 course meal. I got to try 2 different fish along with my duck breast entree. All of it was great.

Great, Authentic French Food
We had a romantic dinner here the other night, and it reminded us so much of the month we lived and worked in Paris. Great food, great service, great atmosphere. Would definitely recommend it, and we'll definitely be back.

My favorite French restraunt in SF
As always the food is amazing, Not one dish was underwhelming. I've been here three times and each time I find something
I love. Our server that night did seem a little rushed. But all in all, as always Chapeau never disappoints!

A Celebration Meal
I love taking friends or family to Chapeau for special occasions. A creative menu of excellent French cuisine, with a healthy California touch. $40 for three options - starters - entree - dessert - is a great way to go. We loved an outstanding corn soup & a great sweetbread dish. There was enough of everything for two of us to share. Great skate-wing entree. Although nearly full, desserts were too fantastic to pass up. Warm chocolate cake with rum-raisin ice cream is ecstasy inducing and my sister loved her lemon tart. The owner, Phillipe, comes around to chat and and took extra care to provide us with a green vegetable. Our server was attentive and especially helpful with wine choice.

Chapeau! to Chapeau!
Dinner reservation for 4 @ 8PM on a Friday, every table was occupied; the greeter said it will be a few minutes. Based on the dining frenzy I fully expected a 15+ minute wait, but wait, it was maybe 5 minutes. Hats off to Chapeau! for the excellent table/guest management. Chef Philippe Gardelle on hand to say hello, it must be a well managed kitchen as well for the captain to be able to wander around, and the ship to not run aground.
3 of us had the 5 course Chef's Menu. Each course was a delight - tasty and beautiful, with good sized portions it is clear why it is the "chef's menu" not a "tasting menu". Preparation, seasonings and presentation were exquisite.
Due to the limited space of the review space here, must bid adieu!

This has become our favorite
This has become our favorite restaurant as we visit on nearly an annual basis. Phillipe was just arriving as we pulled in with
friends who came in from Nevada for the weekend to see us after arriving from KC and he personally found/created a parking spot for us in front of the restaurant. He is one of the most outstanding chefs and gracious hosts that we have ever encountered
in our travels. This was our 5th time and we have yet to be disappointed. The distance and extra cab fare is money well spent if staying in the Union Square , Financial Districts or Wharf areas of the city!!

Worth the drive
We came over to this little gem from Oakland to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday. It was a great decision.
I had menu 2 with corn soup, scallops and salmon. The corn soup seemed a little bit watery, but the flavor was great. The scallops and salmon were delicious. The presentation of the salmon wasn't the greatest, but the flavor was excellent.
My boyfriend had oysters, the salmon trio and the duck. Everything was delicious, but again, the presentation of the duck looked a bit like a frozen dinner. The wine recommendation from the server was excellent. He had the Baked Alaska for dessert and loved it.
The service was EXCEPTIONAL! We felt very well taken care of the entire evening.

Excellent always and Phillipe is a gem.

Great food nicey presented and two prix fix menus, one if before 6:30 at a discount. A very popular neighborhood venue that really requires reservations. Nice atmosphere but a little crowded and noisy.
9/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
I loved the ambiance when our party of three was seated. The service here is wonderful: they are careful but not intrusive. Little things like attention to when plates are finished before proceeding the meal to the next stage and refilling drinks. I have been here three times since dine about town in June of 2013. My favorite is the Pan Seared Maple Leaf Farms Duck Breast, made to perfection. Also tried the filet mignon which was great as well. I am also a big fan of the Mesclun Salad. Would definitely recommend to friends.

Continues to be one of our favorite
I am dinging the rating for a minor problem, I had put a note in the reservation that I would like a special request of bouillabaisse. Apparently no one picked up the note so when I arrived Phillipe was unaware of my request. He did quickly adapt and sent out a bouillabaisse of sorts that was missing my favorite grilled fennel (although the fennel was in the halibut dish offered that night). As usual, the food was excellent, the wine choice by Ellen very good. To avoid leaving totally stuffed we declined to order desserts but they graciously sent out a complimentary one. Chapeau is a wonderful restaurant with hardworking and charming owners - I hope Michael Bauer re-reviews them after the remodel and returns their top 100 status.

Got greeted by someone when
Got greeted by someone when we first walked in, but then he walked away. Strange. Turns it it was the head chef, Philippe Gardelle. Took a little while for the waiter to come around to take our orders. I kept drinking water, but i couldn't get it more than half empty before they came around and filled my water to the top. She must of come around about 10-15 times to refill my water. Almost felt bad, but she sure passed my tip test. They seemed a little understaffed that day. I only saw 4 waiters for the entire place? Phillippe came to our table and served us dessert. Gave us a little spheel about using big spoons for dessert instead of tiny ones. Couldn't leave the place without him giving the gf a kiss and shaking my hand.

What a great find!
We loved this restaurant and would definitely go back. it was just a super experience -- great food, service, ambiance and table location. Couldn't ask for more. Give it a try!
9/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
This is a fantastic restaurant for a special occasion. Great food, excellent wine list and unhurried service. The chef is always on hand to greet the patrons and make suggestions - by doing this he makes everyone feel special. We had their prime rib for two and it was superb.
9/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
Fabulous and French
Philiipe Giradelle is a master of an experience. From greeting each guest at the door, to small talk he is incredibly involved in the guests experience. The incredible chef's gift, the cauliflower soup is velvety and perfectly seasoned with a touch of truffle oil and I begged for more. The carpaccio scallops melted in your mouth, as the hint of orange zest and mango played on your tongue. The main courses were equally delectable whether vegetarian or not. The desserts were superb whether fresh fruit napoleon or 3 nut chantilly. This restaurant is our absolute favorite for years. Incredibly consistent.
9/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
Consistant high quality
We have been coming to Chapeau for over 20 years and have had the pleasure of well prepared and tasty meals everytime. We often will take out of town guests to experience fine french food.

Great food, impolite waiter
I am from out of state. I took a date to Chapeau for a nice dinner. The atmosphere was cool and fun. We were greeted at the door by the owner or manager who was gracious and very nice. The food was excellent in all respects. The presentation was lovely. My skate and her filet were perfectly prepared. Overall it was an excellent restaurant except for the attitude of our waiter. I like to ask questions about menu options. So, I asked if he would describe a couple of the entrees and if he thought our wine selection was okay. He acted as if we were imposing on him. He was condescending and did very little to describe the entree options. Had it not been for his attitude I would have given an overall 5 stars. Too bad.

Superb French restaurant
Philippe, the owner/chef greets all diners. The menu includes favorites as well as specials. Our waiter was friendly, knowledgable and patient, My wife and I wre impressed with our appetizers, main courses and desserts. Each item was delicious. The wine list offered a wide variety of French wives and was reasonably priced.
We've been to Chapeau several times and have never been disappointed . Needless to say, we'll continue to come back, knowing it's a French pearl.

Hospitality Practiced Here
Really appreciated the gracious greeting and welcome by the owner/chef. I don't understand why so many people in the hospitality industry don't have a clue about hospitality. This owner does.
10/4/2013 12:00:00 AM
Everything we were told it to be: warm greeting, great service and terrific food. Will definitely return.

Mom's Birthday dinner
Always great to come here, came with my Mom and my niece who had never been before. We had the Sweetbreads, Prime Rib and Filet Mignon with Perigourdine! Also the baked alaska was amazing! Loved it, always love coming here and got to take pictures with Phillipe who is always welcoming and wonderful! They were filming when we arrive for a possible Food Network show and that was a little crazy but then they wrapped up and everything was fine! Chapeau deserves to have their own show and we never hate seeing celebrities! Hooray!
10/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
We were visiting San Francisco and found Chapeau via Open Table reviews. So glad we did. It was a great experience from start to finish. The hostess was efficient. Our waiter was busy but attentive. The owner/chef checked on us repeatedly. The food... Yum. We started with traditional escargot with plenty of their crusty bread, shared a mesclun salad with grapes, pistachio and roasted Camembert . My husband had an amazing bacon-wrapped pork tenderloin and I had roasted chicken stuffed with veal mousse. Fabulous. Seating is tight but it enabled us to meet a lovely local couple who had been coming to Chapeau for years. When we left, we were sent off with a farewell as though we were long-time patrons.

Special Place for Human Prices
Chapeau is very special. The food is excellent: last night a chestnut soup that blew me away. The service is formal and classy. When we eat here it makes us feel good. The head of the kitchen comes around to see if you enjoyed your dinner, it seems like the whole staff wants you to enjoy yourself. Wish I was going back this week end...
10/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
Was reminiscent of meals in Paris with my father. I knew when I tasted the bread and butter that I was in for a fantstic experience.
10/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Wonderful meal where we celebrated my daughter's 30th birthday. Just delicious. Service wonderful - we ate a little on the later side 8:15 pm which may have helped - also made parking a breeeze. You can pay more but I don't think you can find better food in SF.
10/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
Wonderful attentive service, friendly and helpful servers. Chef came out to shake our hands and kissed us goodbye when we were leaving. Portions were surprisingly large! I recommend building your own 4-course menu. The roasted chestnut soup was TO DIE FOR.

This restaurant came to me by recommendation from a French friend from X and the Farm. It's not as good as he said it was but I would return.

Chapeau! Still Wears A Top Hat
We had not been to Chapeau! in many years, and the quality of the food, the attentive service and overall ambience have not diminished in the interim. We were celebrating a birthday, and so lingered over our meal for almost three hours. Not once did we feel rushed. We opted for the four-course menu, which is a bargain at any price (appetizer, tasting fish, entree and dessert). The salt cod appetizer, scallops, chicken and skate entrees were both winners, and the baked Alaska and trio of sorbets rounded out an excellent meal. Chapeau! is definitely a restaurant for special occasions.
11/4/2013 4:00:00 PM
Chapeau is my favorite restaurant in SF. The food is delicious. It's always difficult to choose which dish to have because I have enjoyed everything I've had there. Most recently I had the salad landaise to start. Each bite had a wonderful blend of flavors that I tried to savor before taking the next bite. For my entree I had the sweetbreads. They were crisp on the outside and tender and warm on the inside. Perfect. For dessert I tend to be very predictable and go for the profiteroles. I have never had more satisfying profiteroles than the ones at Chapeau.
The service is warm and friendly. Phillipe and Ellen make everyone feel welcome.
Everyone who we've ever taken to Chapeau has thoroughly enjoyed it. I absolutely love Chapeau.
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
Food is still very good
I had not been to Chapeau since they moved to Clementine's old spot. The food and service is still as good but disappointed by the noise level in the new location (not so new but new to me!)
11/14/2013 4:00:00 PM
Classy but comfortable restaurant.
Classy but comfortable restaurant. Food was very good all around. The Chestnut soup was outstanding, and the monkfish entrée with pesto risotto was very tasty and well-done. Service was attentive and pleasant throughout the evening. I will definitely add Chapeau! to my list of restaurants to return to in the future.

great restaurant.the food was amazing. desserts were also really delicious.our table was too close to the door and the chef immediately reseated us to a better location. we were very thankful.great value for the taste and quality of the food.highly recommend this place.

Fantastic date night.
Best Filet Mignon of my life. My boyfriend got the salmon trio and the skate wing; we were very impressed. For dessert, we got the baked alaska (espresso ice cream and rum cake inside toasted marshmallow meringue) and a chocolate lava cake with rum raisin ice cream. The wait staff makes you feel pampered and the chef greets each table. I overheard several diners speaking french, which is encouraging at a french restaurant. They were kind enough to take a dessert off the bill and bring it with a candle for his birthday. I rated ambiance as 4 instead of 5 only because we were seated precariously close to another couple, close enough to where it was difficult to ignore their conversation or their food, etc.
Make sure you reserve early!

Terrific limitless bistro
Thoughtful French bistro in the inner Richmond. The casoulet was delicious and the baby pumpkin proof that Chapeau isn't just for carnivores. Definitely looking forward to my next visit!

Chapeau is Wonderful!
This neighborhood gem is a lovely place to have traditional, and exquisitely prepared, French cuisine.
This restaurants atmosphere is comfortable as the accoustics permit for quite conversation, the staff is efficient, intelligent and engaging, and the decor is simple and well kept.
My only wish is for the guests to feel it appropriate, and respectful, to not wear jeans and hoodies, and place their cell phones and elbows on the table - creating an unpleasant distraction for an otherwise memorable dining experience.
11/26/2013 4:00:00 PM
The food is terrific. I would definitely come back.

Chapeau(fka: Clementine Restaurant)
Now I know why the bill after the meal came in a hat. A short wait for booked reservations then we were seated in a small table sin the midst of a long line of tables and lots of noise. The chef greeted us while we waited for the table. Most of the patrons seemed to be young and from the neighborhood. My husband had the sweetbreads followed by the bouillabaisse which was great. I had an onion soup--too thin-- followed by the cassoulet with duck confit and lamb--ok. The confit was not
cured enough so it was basically a duck leg, sausage and lamb--not one of my favorites. The wait staff was very helpful and suggested a very nice wine which matched both dinners. For a French bistro, Chapeau is well priced and interesting.

What an amazing experience - one of the best dining experiences I have experienced.
Highlights - Mussels, tasting fish (scallops), filet, and skate. The service was impeccable, as was the cadence of the meal. This is fine dining done right - hard to find anything critical to say.
Also - the price is right, as were the portions. The pile of mussels we received for a half order easily was a meal in itself!
We will be returning - regularly! Thanks for the great meal and keep up the great work.
