A Landmark Site, But Where is It?
As a former member of the National Press Club, I was familiar with the layout of the 13th floor where the club is located. My lunch guests, however, were not. One guest was 10 minutes late because once he arrived at the 13th floor, nobody he asked for directions to the Fourth Estate Restaurant knew where it was. One person told him,"There are lots of places to eat here." Another pointed to the First Amendment Lounge and said, "A lot of people are eating in there." Another said, "All the restaurants are down this corridor." I am stumped by that experience.
The restaurant lived up to my expectations. I like traditional places where you can hear your guests, get a good drink, a decent meal with decent service, and not break the bank.

Inside baseball, but not for kids
Excellent atmosphere that embodies DC culture with a flair of "insider-ism." Beautiful dining room with exceptional service and wait staff. Definitely NOT a place for kids, especially small children who might be fussy. The other patrons would NOT appreciate that disturbance -- and would likely tell you so.

Our first meal at the National
Our first meal at the National Press Club's Fourth Estate was a delightful Saturday brunch. Our entrees of an omelet loaded with cheese, mushrooms and bacon; another of waffles with a generous topping of beautiful strawberries and blackberries along with extra crispy bacon went perfectly with a bottle of Prosecco. We were very pleased to meet the executive chef of the restaurant, Susan Delbert, who was incredibly gracious. On the day we visited the restaurant she had just completed a cooking class purchased by a couple as part of a charity auction. We hope Chef Delbert will extend those cooking classes to the general public. It would be fun to spend time in her kitchen and learn some new techniques.

Quiet but delicious!
We had a group of 4 that used a Travel Zoo voucher for lunch on a week day. We had an early reservation, and the restaurant was nearly empty. The waiter was very helpful and made excellent recommendations. The food was very well prepared, and everyone got just what they wanted. Overall, great experience!

More interesting at lunch?
Hard to say anything bad except they obviously need the business in the evening. It was essentially empty on Saturday night, though it was somewhat early (7:45pm). Added a few more tables by the time we left, and those were also using their vouchers from a certain "special deals" website. Might expect to find more celebs during the weekday lunchtime. Only dignitaries when we were there were in photos on the walls. Wish them luck - decent food and good service and special price vouchers are not going to be enough. No wonder they are not open on Sunday. Maybe they should save money and only open for lunch.

Great service plus good food.
It started with Francisco holding our table. We arrived late due to misjudging a walk during the day and were exhausted. Francisco was warm and inviting. Our server upon realizing we were hungry, brought bread immediately and our salad right after. My dinner was excellent and I ate everything on my plate. Thanks again.

Went for lobster night. Lobsters
Went for lobster night. Lobsters weren't wonderful, because they were pretty dried out; however the service was outstanding. The ambience is pleasant with white linen table cloths and historic news photos on the walls.

A quiet oasis
Fourth Estate is a delightful gem in the middle of downtown. Apart from the fun of getting to go to the Press Club without a member, the food is uniformly excellent. And that was verified the day we were there when the chef was playing host to the head chefs of heads of state from all over the world, who had just come over from the White House to have lunch. The service is friendly, attentive and professional. Best of all, it's quiet and easy to talk. A great spot for lunch.

I visit at least once a month for dinner. Always consistent, never disappointed.

I needed a place to conduct
I needed a place to conduct a leisurely business lunch and this was perfect. It was comfortable and quiet. The restaurant week special was a good value. The service was excellent.

I came here for restaurant
I came here for restaurant week with a coworker on a whim. It was a little hard to find but that wasn't a show stopper. The food was delicious and the selection for restaurant week which was the entire menu was delicious. I had the duck and my coworker had the steak. We left very satisfied and impressed with the overall meal. I would definitely come again even when it's not restaurant week.

Food was excellent and pricing was what it would be in a more modest setting. Think: Clyde's pricing in a white-table-cloth-and-base-plates kind of place. Service was friendly, gracious and helpful, but not in-your-face. Menu questions were answered and the meal was very good. If this restaurant were at ground level; a storefront, they'd be crazy-busy. But since they're on the 13th floor of the National Press Building, you have to know it's there to know it's there! If you go - and you should - allow yourself extra time to look at some of the extraordinary photos on the wall just outside the restaurant and around the corner on the ballroom side of the floor. It's an extraordinary place and I enjoy it each time I go.

Restaurant week Try-Out
Arriving early for 11:30 appointment, we were very-warmly received and welcomed. Wait staff were attentive and helpfully clarified our dining options. The food was delicious and attractively presented. I was very happy & colleagues thanked me over and over for arranging our final Restaurant Week lunch here.
Not a Press Club member, I will now be on the lookout for opportunities to return.

Most Pleasant Experience
On our first visit, we were very impressed with The Fourth Estate Restaurant. The ambience was refine elegance; the staff, most pleasant and attentive; the food, delicious; the drinks, outstanding; and the prices were reasonable. For us, The Fourth Estate will be a go-to restaurant for occasions when we really want to dine.

Joined family from out of town for a classic dinner. Great selection on the menu and the meal surpassed expectations. Staff was super attentive and accommodating.

Great service and ambience ok food
The service was outstanding. The waiters and staff were wonderfully attentive but not overbearing. The building was beautiful. The food was overly creamy. I had the salmon which seemed to be baked in cream and topped with a buttery breading of some sort. I like to have salmon done more simply because I love the taste on its own. It was too fatty due to the cream and butter phyllo-bread toppings and over flavored for me. My friend had the vegetable lasagna, which was delicious (in small quantity) but also overly creamy. Both dishes were extremely rich and creamy.

I rather Keep this one a Secret!!!
The Fourth Estate has no street presence other than a 3 X 4 sandwich board on 14th street NW. It's hidden away up on the 13th floor of the National Press Building. This white table cloth eatery is a real gem. Chef Susan Douglas goes out of her was to provide tasty meals with wonderful presentation in a quiet refined setting. This is not a place for toddlers or strollers but a spectacular spot for significant others or business colleagues. You get to pass through the news-maker photos on your walk down the long entry way to the restaurant. The food prep is carried off flawlessly and served by a very attentive staff. The wine list is limited but sufficient as are other drinks options. They serve espresso and solid desserts. Pricing$$

Just the Two of Us
Fourth Estate treated us very, very well! We were guided to a secluded table, and while we were not very hungry, we ordered what turned out to be a very fine bottle of wine. Service was consistently outstanding, friendly and engaging!
We needed time to 'catch up' and Fourth Estate did not mind that we talked for hours! This consideration alone is worth every star in the book of stars!
I will definitely return.
9/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
I don't know why this place isn't more popular. It is fantastic! The food is delicious and the wait staff is great. Highly recommend, and will be going back.

Fourth Estate - Don't Miss It
Dining at the Fourth Estate Restaurant in the National Press Club building was quite a treat! Wonderful food (we each loved our meals--filet mignon, salmon, crab cakes, chicken), excellent service, very friendly staff in a formal dining setting. Don't miss an opportunity to experience this place. (They validate parking at a nearby PMI, also!) Check out the interesting historic photos in the area of the building outside the restaurant, too.
9/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
I highly recommend this place for outstanding food and service. We will return.
9/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
Quite, Private, and delicious
As most of the reviews say, this place is a hidden gem that is very private, intimate, and full of historic value. You won't have a lot of disruptions if you show up on a Saturday night around 7pm. During our dinner, we shared the room with three other couples who were seated to their own liking. The wait staff was very attentive and the atmosphere was simple yet classic. The food is delicious and the deserts are simple but perfect. If you're looking for a private and historic place to dine, this is a wonderful place to visit in D.C.

Perfect to enjoy friends and food
Early reservation — 6 pm, only three other tables occupied when we arrived. The appetizer salads were beautifully prepared, had very high quality greens and carefully prepared elements. The Duck, Filet and Salmon were our main courses. All were prepared as requested. The desserts were both beautiful and delicious, and the French Press Coffee was the right temperature. Service was professional. An hour and a half for dinner was the perfect pace. Nearly full when we left. We're going back soon. Reasonable price for Saturday Night in DC. Press Club sights on the way in are fascinating too. Lighting was a little bright.
9/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
we were nine people for lunch. Everyone's food came out at the same time, hot food hot and cold food cold, and all cooked /prepared as requested. Everyone was pleased with the quality and taste of their food. Service was attentive without being overbearing. WE all plan to return.

Excellent food, service
We ate lunch at Fourth Estate--enjoying excellent crab cakes and filet mignon. The side dishes and presentation are top-notch. The prices are a good value for the quality of food and service. I will definitely eat here again.
9/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
While very upscale and not intended to be "kid-friendly", the staff was engaging, attentive, and very "kid-friendly" with our (well mannered) 8-yr old. Food did not disappoint - filet and crabcakes were excellent and generous portions. Service was was excellent - right balance of formal but non-stuffy. Decor was somewhat "private club"/traditional steakhouse with interesting National Press Club photos for interest.
9/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
Everything was exceptional at this restaurant. Food was beyond expectations and well prepared. Staff and facility were terrific. We went on Friday evening and there was not much of a crowd to our delight but it was surprising in view of the quality of the dining experience that the place was not packed.

Fourth Estate a Winner
My wife and I had an early dinner on Saturday night. We were very impressed with the restaurant. The setting was interesting, the food and service were great, and we found wine to our taste. Even the house pinot grigio and cabernet sauvignon were good. We will definitely eat there again.

Great place that almost no one knows about. The food is some of the best prepared I've eaten in the area. The price is the best deal.

The National Press Club is open to the public--who knew? We were a party of 8 attending a conference in Washington, and we were looking for a special place to wish a colleague farewell, and this was exactly the place to go! Entering the NPC is like stepping into the middle of Washington history, present and past. Pictures line the walls, many of them taken there, of historic notables. A photo of FDR and Churchill holding a press conference at our table reminded us of the real history of the place. While not overly ambitious, the menu was diverse and well-prepared. The wine list offered good, affordable options, too. Most noteworthy was the service, which was friendly and memorably personal. Overall, the prices were very reasonable!

Location and history
I loved this restaurant. The menu and food were good, but I adored the history and private club feel of the dining experience. Food was classic fare made from fresh ingredients and nicely prepared. This would be a great place for a business dinner, meeting the in-laws or just feeling a little closer to all the culture and history of a city like D.C.

Tradition paired perfectly w/ Class
The food and service were absolutely wonderful. The ambiance and setting is classic Washington. We enjoyed a wonderful afternoon dining and exploring the Press Club.

Fabulous Dining Experience
We went to the restaurant Saturday night for the first time to celebrate two birthdays. Entering the Fourth Estate restaurant we were pleasantly surprised by the sophisticated but not stuffy ambiance. Our server, Bisama, could not have been nicer or more attentive. He even brought us a sample of the African peanut soup before we ordered our appetizers which were delicious and beautifully presented. Our entrees were superb, and Bisama was correct when he said the crab cakes were the best around - two all jumbo lump crab cakes with little or no filler accompanied by jalepeno cornbread and a corn salsa with fresh avocado. The filet menu was one of the best I've ever eaten. Highly recommend this restaurant, and we'll definitely be back.

Good for business lunch
Many may not know the public is invited to use the Fourth estate. It is ideal for business lunches. Food is good. Service is superb and you can hear the conversation.
10/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
We went here for my boy friends birthday, the food was fantastic. We shared the filet and crab cakes entrees, both were cooked perfect and there was barely and filler mostly crab in the crab cakes. The atmosphere was enjoyable knowing it had lots of famous visitors.

The purpose of our dining
The purpose of our dining experience was to celebrate my husbands birthday, and we dined with our son, and his mother.
Everything about the experience was excellent. The service and attention from the staff was great. The meals were fabulous both in presentation and quality. We used a certificate from Travel Zoo, which included an appetizer, entree, and glass of wine. The value for the dollar was great.

Good Food and Pleasant Ambiance
Took my wife and son to the National Press Club for evening dinner during our son's visit to Washington. It was a memorable experience enhanced by all the photos of notables who visited the Press Club in the past. More than a meal; it's an experience.

It seemed somehow wrong
... to have lovely big hunks of steamed lobster meat in a grilled cheese sandwich (brie), especially to someone who regards eating a lobster as a once- or twice-in-a-year special treat, but I ordered the sandwich anyway and it was beyond heavenly. The service was excellent too.
10/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
I've been to the Fourth Estate many times, and I'm always pleased and impressed with the food - imaginative, tasty, and beautifully presented.

Excellent food and service in a quiet, conversation-friendly environment.

A very good restaurant! And particularly interesting to out-of-towners....

My husband and I were married at the press club and the food was one of the things that sold us on hosting our wedding there. Whether feeding 2 or 100, we have been impressed with the consistent quality of their food. They offer great vegetarian entrees too!
11/10/2013 4:00:00 PM
To our surprise, the Fourth Estate is tucked away in a corner of the 13th floor of the Press Club. We made our reservations based on location as we were going to a show at the National Theatre, and the menu looked good. The food was indeed good, as well as the service, but the atmosphere was a bit lacking. It was quiet, so good for conversation, but we were looking for something a bit livilier. Our group of four are in our 40s and we were the youngest table in the restaurant. Overall, a pleasant dining experience, just not what we were expecting.

We'll Be Back!
Why go to a restaurant that can only please your palate when you can also dine in one that also serves up a a trip down a memory lane filled with the most famous folks from the fourth estate? On this special occasion with another couple who we like to impress we were served tasty dishes, well-prepared and presented in an intimate atmosphere. We will be back.

Liked it very much
First time we had dinner at this restaurant. The food was delicious - I had duck, my husband had crab cakes. Both was very good.
The house wine is not bad at all.
The service was excellent, high class.
