Worth the trip from the UWS
We discovered this restaurant after a 92nd street Y event and now make elaborate plans to ensure we get back. The food is superb. Not fussy. Rich flavours. Low key ambience, yet attentive, friendly service. I love this place!

Small neighborhood gem, convenient to programs at the 92 St. Y. Great wine choices, Lasagna different and the best, skip the antipasto. Absolutely would return.

Cozy with original food
Very good service. Forgot my shopping bag there, called them later same night, and the were really friendly and stashed it for me for two days until I picked it up.
Very nice touch with a somilier to discuss drinks with.

A wonderful experience
This quiet, quaint restaurant has captured the ambience of rustic Italy. The food was delicious with clever mixings of spices. I highly recommend their signature chicken. And for those with a sweet tooth, their semi-frozen chocolate mousse is a must. The wine list is very good. The hostesses, waitresses, and barman are all first-rate. I shall return (not to coin a sentence): I strongly recommend Sfoglia.

Fabulous food, great service,
Fabulous food, great service, everything top notch. The best dining experience we have had in a long time!

Simple, rustic, classy
This was our first time to Sfoglia and we loved it. Our rose wine was delicious, the house appetizer of two salads with crostini was very good and the pastas were very creative, layered with flavor. We loved the rooms, gorgeous chandeliers with rustic charm of old wood tables, flowers and candles. This place is a wonderful find.

Service excellent; food good.
Service is wonderful. Staff really cares. Acknowledged our anniversary with double dessert and complimentary cookies. Food is very well prepared, but the lamb chops were fatty and rather tough. Seasonings were great and the desserts wwere delicious.

Amazingly delicious food!!
And the wine pairing was superb!!!
Restaurant needs more lighting ... Only had votive candles on my table with no over head lighting, so couldn't see my food.

The food and service at Sfoglia
The food and service at Sfoglia is among the very best in the city, and definitely the best at its price point. We don't love the communal tables but that doesn't stop us from going as often as we can.

Great Italian fare
The restaurant boasts a wonderful classic Italian cuisine with veg-friendly updates in the way of appetizers and sides. My husband's standard and the one he recommends to guests is the crispy chicken under a brick. My favorites are the grilled fish and the creative sides and salads. We've been told the menu changes about every 10 weeks, so you may not always find a favorite (like my husband's mussels), but I have found lovely variations with the seasons, from baby root vegetable salads and parsnip purees in winter to tomato-watermelon panzanella in summer.
The great unannounced pleasure is the gloriously crusty bread.
The restaurant gets a substantial pre-92d St. Y concert crowd, yet I have never found the place to be noisy.
7/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
It's just one of those places that delivers consistency and yet something unique every time we go.
7/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Adorable and delicious.
My husband and I had lunch at Sfoglia before heading to the Met. It was a quiet day in the restaurant, but we didn't feel rushed. The bread was warm and delicious. The pasta was flavorful and much more than the average pasta dish . I wish we lived closer so we could eat here more often.
7/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
extraordinary Italian food
Not our first review. This time, in addition to the classic delicious chicken under a brick, they offered an amazing arctic char on a bed of corn, zucchini and eggplant. Although I never eat dessert, our neighbors had me taste a small portion of their dessert, a peach tart with ice cream. The crust was tender and flaky, the fresh peaches not too sweet, a lovely combination.

Great food, great setting
Although they could do a little work to make the outside more appealing, this restaurant was amazing! From the mismatched wooden tables and chairs making for an adorable country feel, to the incredible food (fresh bread, bolognaise from scratch, to die for peach tart) I cannot recommend this place enough. I am definitely going back.

We asked friends for a recommendation since our hotel was in their NYC neighborhood. They said this was their favorite restaurant and we can see why. Intimate, classy, wonderful art, great food and wine. A gem!
8/6/2013 5:00:00 PM
The chilled English pea soup with mascarpone, walnut and maple was perfectly balanced, delicious. The same for the orrechiette with lentils, octopus, basil, pine nuts, each flavor balancing the next so that there was a sense of the whole rather than its parts. And at the end, a shaving of cheese with house made jam on salty thin grain wafers was happiness, balanced the bread served at the beginning, a dream of faultlessly crusty married to an airy but substantial middle. I'd order everything again, and trust the chef for anything else on the menu. Gratefully.
8/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
My favorite neighborhood gem plus..
I go there all the time, despite the price tag, for its charming eccentricity, inventive cuisine, extremely fresh ingredients, and general warmth and charm...
8/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
We had never been but heard wonderful things. Our expectations were exceeded. The ambience was charming. Very helpful staff. Each course was more delicious than the next. Especially recommend the orecchiette pasta. Note to be down played was the fresh bread!!

Sfoglia needs to improve the
Sfoglia needs to improve the experience in the "back room". I forgot to specifically request the front room this time and regretted it. It has the feeling of being put at the kiddie table at Thanksgiving. None of the warmth of the front room and accoustics are poor. We were shouting at one another midway through our dinner as the restaurant got busier.
Also we asked for wine recommendations and got an enthusiastic one for a new wine they recently added. We ordered it. Only to learn that they were out of it. A disappointment but not a big deal. They suggested an alternative. But then in reviewing our check we discovered they had charged us for that original order as well as the bottle we were served. A bit too much left-hand-right-hand.
8/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
Always a wonderful experience!
The atmosphere is rustic and inviting and yet elegant. The service is great - the waitress is knowledgeable and a fan of both wine and food - I always take her recommendations. One might think it's pricey but actually it is very reasonable for a restaurant with food of this quality. Delicious - never disappoints!
8/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Eat here whenever in town, sit at bar or a table, food always perfect, service impeccable, worth going out of the way for if you have to.

Fantastic every time
My wife and I have been here at least three times a year for the past six years and we are never disappointed.
The pappardelle bolognese is one of the best things I've ever had and we always get it along with one of their seasonal dishes. We have tried pretty much everything on their menu at this point, and everything had been amazing. I can't recommend this place strongly enough.

Second visit, worth a return
Opens at 5:30, perfect for an early supper before an event at the 92nd St Y. Our welcome was warm, and regulars were greeted by name. Interesting selection of wines; I had an excellent Riballo gialo and my friend a light, picant Trebbiano. Friend was much impressed with the English pea soup appetizer; I had a generous bowl of tender clams flavored with bacon in a broth slightly thickened by wild rice. Pasta courses are northern Italian (I had bucatini with zucchini strips, a crunchy ground walnut topping and a touch of vinegar), mostly vegetarian and adequate in half portion--delicious and different. Prices are reasonable for the quality.
9/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
I live very close to Sfoglia, but had only been there once before -- it's an intimate space and almost always fully reserved. Now I know that weekend lunch is the time to go -- same great food and service, easier to get a table. Every bite is comforting yet sophisticated, the freshest, most seasnonal ingredients used in an Italian-American fusion menu. I had chilled pea soup finished with mascarpone, maple syrup, and walnuts, followed by tagliatelle with summer corn, yellow miso, and basil -- amazing. My friend had more traditional plates -- eggplant lasagna, chicken under a brick -- equally delicious. Do not miss the chocolate semifreddo finished with olive oil!
9/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
I've been a few times and to the one on Nantucket and the place is just fantastic! The good and wine are amazing and the ambiance is old worldly and cozy and remarkable. I love it all!
9/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
A slice if heaven!
Recently took friend to celebrate her new job. As usual with this restaurant, everything was outstanding, every bite absolutely sublime. I recommend sitting at bar, which, although small, is really pretty, bartender is always realty friendly and knowledgable when it comes to recommending wine to go with meal.

Lovely menu. Food was simple
Lovely menu. Food was simple and tasty. The ambiance was warm and inviting, with charming decor that was a touch rustic.

We always visit Sfoglia when we're in New York. The menu changes often; it presents interesting choices that make a final decision difficult. No bad choices! The staff is unfailingly friendly, helpful and well-informed. We'll be back.
10/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
Sfoglia is our neighborhood gem, but we also often opt to go there for special occasions too. It's just that kind of place - you know the food is going to be delicious. We end up going there atleast 1-2 times a month and it hasn't disappointed yet.
10/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
It was not crowded. Staff was very attentive, friendly and helpful. We were never rushed. The cod special was very good. I also tasted the Uovo dish which was unique and delicious. The pasta bolognese dish didn't have tomato sauce which was different but a nice twist on a classic meal. Ambience is Tuscan like - the chairs are not comfortable.

I loved this little restaurant,
I loved this little restaurant, it was very small and cozy. The staff were very friendly and gave great service. The food was wonderful and perfectly timed.

wonderful food for varied tastes
We live on the West Side but go there wherever we can. Their classic roast chicken is excellent. For vegetarians there are interesting sides, salads, and pastas. This last time the tomato-watermelon salad was excellent, with large, crunchy but not greasy croutons, and tomatoes dripping with juice. The pasta with mushroom and sweet potatoes was extraordinary.
They have two rooms, one facing the street with a popular bar. For intimacy and a more romantic setting, you can choose the inside room, which feels more enclosed and private.

Sfogila gives real meaning
Sfogila gives real meaning to "neighborhood gem". A truly wonderful serious Italian restaurant. Very informal with plank communal tables, yet with space between unaffiliated diners. Italian menu which requires some translation since a few items I had not heard of before (italian for charcuterie for example). Friendly servers who know their food and wine. A neighborhood crowd mostly informally dressed. Across from 92nd st Y.
10/17/2013 5:00:00 PM
Best bread in the city plus
Best bread in the city plus delicious pastas and tomato-watermelon panzanella.A memorable meal but I'm not so fond of sharing a communal table in a dimly-lit dining room.
10/22/2013 5:00:00 PM
Delicious hearty home-style Italian
I've always adored this place with its intimate size and homey country Italian ambiance. The food is delicious starting with fantastic crunchy-crust warm bread. I had the paparradella bolognaise. Hearty and intense flavor and perfect pasta. Went with someone with food allergies. The staff and chef were very attentive and accommodating to her needs. Love this place!
10/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food was delicious. Even if you don't usually have dessert, make an exception. We shared the Apple Tart and the Bread Pudding. Both worth every delicious morsel. The pasta dishes were very good and we choose the smaller portion because we had shared 2 appetizers. The Wine list was great. I had 2 glasses of a Piemonte Nebbiolo that I had never had before and I think it's my new fav red. Try this restaurant for a special occasion. The service was warm and friendly and attentive.

Rustic Italian in otherwise Culinary Wasteland of East 90s. Fortunately, reservations have been easier to come by.

Excellent All Around
If you want a quality meal with excellent (yet, laid back) service and atmosphere, Sfoglia is your spot. It is definitely reserved for a nicer occasion and is completely worth the price.
11/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
We've wanted to try Sfoglia for a while, but it has been difficult to get reservations. Now we know why. The food is fantastic and there are very few tables. I am hesitant to write this review as it could get MORE difficult to get reservations if everyone knows how great the food is. It is a bit pricey, but worth it.
11/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
Perfect for pre-92nd St Y events
Everything was fabulous, from the bread to the pasta to the roasted chicken to the special dessert -- apple tart.
11/3/2013 4:00:00 PM
Sfoglia is Superb
It's like having a sophisticated Sunday dinner at your Nonna's house. Food is great. Staff is always friendly and accommodating. You can't go wrong.

ACROSS THE STREET FROM 92 Y
And only 3 blocks from the Jewish Museum and a, also close to the guggenheim, small menu, but great food, I always order the chicken, their specialty or the pasta with the meat sauce (fI forget its name, but its without tomato base and delish) the dessert tart is outstanding, sometimes pear, sometimes something else, Order one for the group,.
11/9/2013 4:00:00 PM
Food and service was Great.
The Deco needs a Face Lift.
11/18/2013 4:00:00 PM
Our favorite spot
Sfoglia is a charming refuge with attentive service, lovely atmosphere and delicious food. Be sure to preorder the fruit crostata!
11/24/2013 4:00:00 PM
Wish we'd had a better table...
My only gripe: Despite making a reservation 30 days in advance, my party was seated at a table very near the door. Not especially cozy, but I didn't want to raise a ruckus. Next time, I will ask to be seated in a less exposed place. Otherwise, excellent.
11/30/2013 4:00:00 PM
Great food, great service!
On any trip to NYC we try to have dinner here. The pappardelle is the absolute best anywhere!
12/5/2013 4:00:00 PM
I'll come back
My wife and I had a great experience at Sfoglia. We started at the bar where the bartender did a great job of recommending something to start with. (Champaigne topped off with Saint Germaine - it was great).
We ended up splitting several things and enjoyed them all.
The atmosphere is very cool and the service was exceptional.
