Early Bird Diners
Our group chose an early dinner slot of 5:30 pm and were glad we did as the restaurant filled up very quickly. We preferred an outdoor table in the back patio as it felt more intimate and less noisy. The waitperson was very attentive and had great recommendations when it came to alcoholic beverages. The wine list is rather extensive for such a small restaurant and the mixed drinks were quite tasty (a good balance of flavors and alcohol). The food was quite tasty, particularly the salad, fried squash blossoms, and thin crust pizza. Have to say the dessert was the crowning glory -- a caramel brownie with chocolate ice cream and caramel whipped cream.

Excellent, fresh, innovative dishes
Service was friendly without being overly solicitous. Answers to menu questions were knowledgeable and thorough. We asked the waiter to order for us and the dishes he brought out were fantastic.

Consistently Great Find!
I have dined numerous times at A Cote & the restaurant kills it every time - PLEASE don't forget to make reservation - the place fills up quickly btwn 5:30-7:30p EVERY NIGHT (it's also fun to eat at the bar - great barenders & great martinis)

Á Cote, A College Ave Destination
Their small plate menu has become a favorite for my wife and I. The fresh and local ingredients make a huge impression. The food is always excellent, fun to share with others, and complimented by the good selection of wine. The restaurant has a front and back section, both can be quite loud, though the back is quieter later in the evening or when the weather is warm and they open up the awning.

We can't wait to come back here!!
I haven't come across a restaurant in the last 2 years where the service, ambience and food quality are this good. Match that with prices that are fair and you have a true gem. My wife and I were here for our anniversary and had a wonderful evening. There was a large group next to us that appeared to be having a wonderful evening, and while they were not quiet, their voices did not interfere at all with our dinner. Oh - and the food . . . .I only go to a 5 when it is something truly over the top. If I could give it a 4.5 I would.

Charming - solid food + price point
We had a lovely table in the back for four. The atmosphere was lively but relaxing. Portions are generous and you can spend a lot or a little depending on what kind of dinner you want. Highly recommend the flat breads and the fava bean/corn side. Only complaint was no A/C - a little stuffy inside!

Huge "small" plates.
The food is excellent and abundant. Much larger servings than tapas.
The wine list is a bit intimidating; I had never heard of ANYTHING on the menu; not the vineyards or the types of grapes!
But, the server knew everything inside out and made an excellent rec based on my described preferences!
All in all, great meal for two including three aps, one main (we ordered too much!), wine and desert for 110 bucks!
A deal and a half! :)

Lovely for a romantic dinner
My SO and had an opening-time reservation. We were seated promptly. The service was relaxed yet efficient - we never felt rushed. The food was wonderful - especially the cheese platter.
I would highly recommend sitting outside, if possible. It seemed like the inside was a little too noisy.

One of our favorite spots
One of our favorite spots in the East Bay. Especially good with family, friends or as a romantic setting. The a la carte menu lends itself to sharing

Wonderful as usual except the end
I love A Cote, especially when I lived in the neighborhood. I've held small dinner parties (8-10) to celebrate birthdays and graduations there, met friends or my fiancee for intimate dinners, and gone in alone to sit at the bar and eat moules and frites. The wine selection is terrific, the food wonderful, the bartenders friendly, and the atmosphere is lively.
I had a great dinner but didn't realize that the restaurant closed at 10. There were several tables with diners (one with 8!) still eating when the manager must have decided he wanted to get rid of us. He jacked the sound up to mosh pit decibels and changed the music to something less sit-down friendly without saying a word to us about closing. It was unprofessional and rude.

Reliable and imaginative
One of our favorite standbys, both for visitors and friends to Oakland. Excellent green gazpacho this time, and the usual fabulous french fries. Haven't had a bad dish in twenty visits.

A Cote was a pleasure as always.
A Cote was a pleasure as always. Our waitress was extremely helpful with wine recommendations and was very attentive. The food was wonderful as usual and we enjoyed the ambiance of being seated outside. A great dining experience all around!

Went here for my birthday dinner for a group of 4, and it really exceeding my expectations - food and service were both exceptional. Ambience was nice without being pretentious. Would definitely recommend!

It's the second I've been to A Cote. The food is the main reason I go because
It has a variety of French, Spanish and Italian all in one place. The wine list
Includes wine from several parts of the world Hungary, Switzerland, Germany,Etc. the
list goes on and on and compliments the food nicely. I love that you
can enjoy an amazing meal, the ambiance and still have a pleasant
conversation with your companion. There was a lot of thought put in
interior space and overall it is an amazing experience.

A Cote Never Disappoints
A Cote was delightful. The food was delicious! And we had it all - cocktails, small plates, large plates, dessert, coffee. Everything was perfect. The restaurant was crowded, but we could hear one another. The wait staff was warm and friendly. It was a great eveing. It is also a great place to meet for drinks - nice cocktail, beer and wine list.

A very special place
A Cote was one of the original small plates restaurants. And it is still going strong! Every item delicious...fun vibe...friendly wait staff...amazing wine list from all over the world...and cozy interior. Feels like you're in Paris somewhere! A true gem in Rockridge...have been coming since 90's since kids at Cal...never fails to impress!

We loved the experience, and ambience of A Cote.
A great place for our anniversary dinner.
It made our 17th anniversary as special as our 1st.

Great birthday dinner
Took my gf there Sunday night, our first time there. Excellent food, service, atmosphere, and not overly expensive for what you get. Waiter was very informed about their wine selection, too. Would go there again for a special occasion.

Except for the dessert order
Except for the dessert order glitch it was all great. They only charged for one not two desserts which is the classy thing to do and guarantees our return

Great neighborhood restaurant
I haven't been in a few years and I don't understand why---this is a real neighborhood gem---delicious small/large plates--great for sharing

Lots of variety,
I was taken to A Cote for a birthday dinner. The staff was attentive from the moment we stepped in the door. My friend had given me a lovely bottle of wine so we had brought it along. We were sat almost immediately , the place was packed but our table was reserved. The menu had lots of variety right from the appetizers. Our waitress was attentive without being obtrusive. The duck bolognese was amazing. I enjoy the small portion sharing for two. Makes the dinner fun and special. Hadn't been there in a while...would definitely go back. Instead of the over the top birthday song, etc. just a nice candle on the dessert dish..very classy.

The food was spectacular,
The food was spectacular, hangar steak and flat-bread were delicious but our waiter was not friendly and one of the group thought she was rude. Luckily, the food and drinks overcame her attitude but it was my birthday and it would have been nice to have better service. When my pot d’ crème dessert was brought out with a candle it was just set down with a “Here you go”. As we were walking out another table was brought a birthday dish too but they received a happy birthday and some clapping from the staff. It was disappointing.
9/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
Hands done, one of the best dining experiences anyone could have. I must admit the lighting is a bit dim and the noise level is similar to that of a dying rhino; but all in all the food was amazing. I still can't get over those raspberry fritters....UGH! They are to die for.
9/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Addicted to the mussels!
We sat in the courtyard in the back, which is very nice and quiet. So when the weather is nice, ask to sit out there. We ordered the mussels in pernod sauce, which are seriously the best mussels I ever ate- they were plump and meaty and the sauce is amazing- order more bread for dipping in the sauce. We ordered the pots de creme for dessert- it was tasty and large- could be shared with 4 people easily.

Great night out
My husband and I just decided to pick a restaurant via Open Table on a whim. A Cote was a great choice. It was a lot of fun. Small plate dining was ne to us an our waiter Rick took good care of us. He showed us how to order and whisked dishes to our table as he saw we were ready. Fabulous wine list too. This was a Sunday evening - at about 6:30 pm - so the dining crowd was probably light. We found the restaurant quiet, although the tables were mostly full, and intimate with reduced lighting.Just a perfect evening. We left the restaurant about 7:30 pm completely satisfied and were comfortable walking College Avenue. There were groups of casual walkers out and diners going in and out of the several restuarants along the street. We will be back.
10/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
Always a great dining experience. Each dish well executed, perfectly portioned for sharing with two, and nicely presented. The mussel are a must. Let the server help you with wine selections. They have some lovely treasures with an unusual menu. You will likely benefit by exploring the choice with some guidance!
10/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
Excellent food and service
We really enjoyed the food and they have an amazing wine list which includes selections from all over the world. The service was spot on and they allowed us to linger until long after they had closed, very classy. The only complaint is that on the extended patio it was either too hot or too cold. The main patio is a better bet. It's a bit noisy if you eat inside the restaurant.

The food was very tasty, the French wine from the Loire Valley was one of the best I ever had, and the wait staff was very friendly and helpful. The desserts put us in ecstasy! I love the fact that it is a neighborhood gem in Oakland!

Worth the Price
Although the menu is limited, everything we tried was very good. The wine list is Euro-centric, so do not expect many California wines.

Charming, romantic spot -
Charming, romantic spot - love that it serves late. The food was delicious, especially the clams, and meatballs. Great cocktails, the vodka gimlet yummy! Nice also that they have several flights of wine, so can get a taste of 5 wines and expand your palette and exposure to new wines easily. Had a window seat, which I requested through Open Table, and it was ready and waiting for us when we arrived. Would definitely come back.

Our meal was outstanding in
Our meal was outstanding in every way, including the service, with the exception of the mussels. We told our waiter they were OKAY, mediocre at best, and as he recommended them, he took them off our bill without us asking. Given this positive transaction, we will be back again and again, even ordering the mussels, as they might have improved!
10/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
There's a reason I come here over and over: the food and drink never fail to delight. With the exception of a few items (mussels and fries to die for) the menu is always changing and there are always new gems to marvel at. This time I thought there was nothing very exciting - then we ordered two of the best veg dishes I have ever eaten. The wine and beer lists are enormous and the servers very knowledgeable and helpful as can be.
Just don't expect quiet; even the beautiful covered outside space, which used to be quieter, can be very noisy.
11/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
Recently ate at A Cote for the first time. The entire evening was delightful. Excellent service, delicious food and a lively atmosphere. We ate in the back, which is fairly quiet. Highly recommend!

Small Plates, Big Flavors
A Cote is one of my most frequented restaurants. The food can always be counted on to be a combination of flavors that surprise and delight. The wait staff are all well trained, so they're knowledgeable about the menu and the wine list. Since the food is served family style, the opportunity to experience more of their delicious offerings without necessarily over-eating makes the evening more fun, enjoyable, and tasty. I'd highly recommend A Cote.

Go when it's dark. Lovely romantic atmosphere, candles, etc. Great wines and signature drinks. Food is good but not great, but who cares?

one of my best times here
have been here many times in the past. this year, came in group of 5 for my b-day dinner. all the food was great, the pacing of which dishes came when was excellent, and the dessert -- which i've never had room to try before at A Cote -- blew us away (it was the chocolatey chocolate thingy with toffee bits?). service was pretty good although our server was not warm, not that friendly. still, he didn't make any mistakes with our order.

Get your seats up front
A Cote is hands down one of the best restaurants in the Bay Area and our favorite local Rockridge spot. We usually sit at the bar, but made a reservation for a table on a busy Saturday night. We were squeezed in on the back patio, right by the service door. Even with the heat lamps, it was chilly and we wore our jackets for the meal- less than ideal conditions to enjoy such excellent food and drink. When you go, and you should, get some seats at the bar, or request to be in the main front room.
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
We recently met up for our book group with 5 ladies!
We had ordered wine & lots of mussels- a great combination!
We ordered additional sides & loved them all, especially the whipped fennel!
The desserts were to die for! Absolutely delish! Great server too!

Always a great experience
My husband and I love going to A Cote on our date nights. Love the food, cheese plate, wine and cocktails, service, and atmosphere. Looking forward to our next visit!

Good food, great ambiance, attentive, but not rushed, service.

Great for Late Night Dining
Finding a restaurant open past 10pm was somewhat of a challenge, but A Cote was great! Open until Midnight made for an enjoyable, relaxed dinner. The drink menu was extensive, with some unusual finds, they even have a good range of non-alcoholic beverages for those who do not imbibe. We went with the olives and pom frites to start and the kombucha gnocchi. It was all quite delicious. I would definitely recommend heading over there for a nice dinner.

Just the right amount of food
Just the right amount of food to share. Mussels are the best. Advice on wine was excellent. Can't wait to go back
11/23/2013 4:00:00 PM
Good food, good service and very dependable. Eclectic menu that offers large and small plates with an assortment of wine selections that are nice and unusual.

Great Place to Meet
This is a great place to meet friends for a relaxed dinner. We arrived an hour prior to our reservation expecting to sit at the bar and wait for our "turn", but instead were seated immediately. Wait staff never rushed us and were helpful in making choices. Food was very good; we especially enjoyed the small plate menu format and ability to try a number of things.

Reliable Rockridge spot
A good option in Rockridge, though the menu hasn't changed much in years (though that's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's nice to get some variety). Most recent outing was impacted by a couple large groups that stretched our server a bit. Took a while to get drinks and orders in. Biggest disappointment was the steak plate, kind of a mess and the meat was tough. Mussels (huge portion) are always a favorite and didn't disappoint. Flat bread was tasty, as was the lingcod. Make a reservation, as A Cote is always busy.
12/6/2013 4:00:00 PM
Excellent for Special Occasion
We were seated in the back, which is actually outdoors. However, even on this cold night, it was warm, cozy, romantic, and significantly quieter than the main inside part of the restaurant. The food was wonderful. We especially enjoyed the porcini mushroom soup.
12/10/2013 4:00:00 PM
Late night dining
The restaurant had been recommended before and we needed a place after a late flight back into SFO. The staff was excellent and food was very good. The waiter recommended a wine for us as the list contains a lot of lesser known wines and it was perfect. My only complaint that might not take us back is that the music is unnecessarily loud. W had to move from the first table that we sat at as we could not hear each other speak. As most people were there in groups and wanted to enjoy each other's company, what is the point of overbearing loud music?

A Night at Acote
I'd heard a lot about this restaurant as the new up and coming thing, but never felt pressed to try it until now, as my boyfriend and I were celebrating promotions. I previously looked up the menu and decided it looked appealing. We made reservations pretty easily and planned to arrive around 6pm. We ran into a ton of traffic, however, and were able to reschedule to 8:30pm, which was great. The place was bigger than I thought, with a nice heated space all the way in the back. Low lighting, great wine, and tasty food. It wasn't any more expensive than a restaurant in SF, so I was happy to not have to cross the bridge on a Saturday night and still have a quality meal in a quality restaurant. Good times.

A memorable experience
It's been a number of years since I dined at À Côté. Perhaps it was because it was a Sunday evening, but it was not as loud as previous visits. It was a pleasure to have a conversation without straining to hear.
Our waiter was terrific - knowledgeable of both the food and the unusual wine list. Small plates, yes, but more substantial than other establishments. We shared 6 or 7 dishes among the four of us and were quite satisfied. Rather than going into specifics, my impression is there are no bad choices to be made. The flavors and textures were distinctive and pleasurable and the wines we had complemented the food well.
À Côté is the perfect place for a romantic dinner or a special occasion. I will remember this for quite some time.
