We always love The Haven.
We always love The Haven. Our first time there for brunch, and the food was good.

Skeptics Were Converted
Scottish food? Really? That was the response of my family when told I'd selected the Haven, because of their fair to poor dining experiences in Scotland. However, they left fully satisfied. Duck confit, scallops, fish and chips (but not the peas) were all very good. Toffee sauce outstanding!

Can't wait to go back
We brought our mom to the Haven for Mother's Day. We were all extremely impressed! We started with the seafood platter which had a variety of smoked fish and the Scottish deviled eggs. I had scallops, my mom got the fish supper, my brother the burger. Everything was perfectly done and the flavors were fabulous. The fried fish batter had a nutmeg tinge to it - unexpected but yummy! My brother says its the best burger he's ever had. Atmosphere is funky yet homey and the service was great - you feel like you can relax. Our server was also helpful explaining the beer list and letting my mom sample something before making a choice. And, the owner gave her a Scottish candy bar for mothers day. All in all, we cant wait to visit the Haven again!

Authentic haggis, neeps and tatties with Scottish heather beer. Can't get any better! And, the toffee pudding is fantastic!

A true one of a kind place
My husband came to Boston for a conference and we decided to check this place out before we left. We took the T down to Jamaica Plains and walked through a sketchy neighborhood to get to this place. This piqued my curiosity about this place even more. I was really glad to experience this place. It's very unique and the brunch was great. I had a quiche special of the day and my husband had the Smoked Fish Cakes. The drinks were great too. I can't recommend coming here for brunch enough.

Great Food, Warm Atmosphere
The food is awesome at The Haven! And the warm, cozy and friendly vibe really makes it a place you want to return again and again. It's a little bit of Europe in our own back yard.
6/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
We went out for a date and to watch the Hockey game, the bartender was excellent, and who could not enjoy being surrounded by some Scots? Great evening overall, great food, can't wait to go back.

Great Food/Very Casual Atmosphere
When I saw the prices from the menu online, I assumed the ambience would be upscale casual. No. It's very casual. Because of the jeans and flip flops atmosphere, I was surprised at how yummy the food was! We will definitely return, but next time we dress comfy.

Most enjoyable experience! As an Irish born JP resident I welcome this resteraunt to our neighborhood. The food was delicious, the staff and management are attentive and very friendly. Their hamburger is without parallel and the chicken sausage dish was outstanding. My advise? Go there soon! Ted B.
6/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
We tried many of the classic Scottish dishes. Scotch eggs were a favorite as was the
Chicken, but the desserts were outstanding particularly the toffee pudding!
6/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
Very good food and interesting selection of beers. I came here several time and I was never disappointed. I always had a good meal at reasonable price.
6/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
I'd go again!
I especially loved the very fresh arugula salad. The food is really good. The beer too. Very original decor and menu! Informal enough to bring well behaved kids. A great find!
6/20/2013 4:00:00 PM
Every time we go to the Haven it's always perfect!
6/21/2013 4:00:00 PM
This restaurant/scottish pub was, for some reason, not quite what I expected. The brunch menu was very limited, very scottish and very good - I recommend that you look at it before heading over. My one complaint is that it really wasn't kid friendly, although we ended up doing ok. When I asked the waitress about modifying (simplifying) some of the menu items, she winced and said that the chef was very reluctant to modify...I get wanting people to have the scottish experience, but the adult experience would have been better if the kids had been happier - my bad for not researching more....
6/22/2013 4:00:00 PM
Great- unique place.
The food is phenomenal and the prices were reasonable. Great bar selections as well. It can get loud making conversation tough, and there is no air conditioning- but it is well worth stopping by!
6/27/2013 4:00:00 PM
Took my friend there for his birthday, decided to make the reservation online. We walked in on the dot of 6:30 and were taken right to a table waiting for the two of us without any delay. The appetizers and drinks were fantastic and the food came at the perfect time. The scotch eggs were such an excellent appetizer that we ended up getting a second round!!! The drinks complemented the food perfectly and the dinner was amazing. The service was top notch. Our server was doing laps around that place but never abandoned us, was always perfectly attentive to everything, and was graceful in every way. Dessert was delicious and the ports touched it off perfectly. The price added up but it was worth every penny.

I have been to the Haven many times for dinner and brunch.
Have never had a ba experience at all.

You take the high road...
Spent 4 months in Scotland near Gourock...ate in many a pub and restaurant - this felt just like that. Dark woods, a few tartans here and there, very friendly service, bag pipe music and really delicious, authentic scottish fare. It was genuine. Very nice evening!!

Neighborhood Fare, Scottish Flair
Having been to Scotland, I realize that food is not necessarily the draw. That being said, the food at the Haven was delicious and unique - drawing on (and perhaps enhancing) a few traditional Scottish dishes while making available a good burger with a twist. Massive beer selection. Excellent service. Only thing missing was a random sheep wandering by ;)
7/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
Feel like Scottish tonight?
What do you feel like for dinner ... Chinese, Thai, Indian, Italian, Scottish? Wait, what?
At last, the elusive Scottish dining option comes to the Boston area. And the food is excellent. The menu most definitely needs the accompanying glossary to explain things like "neeps" and "rumpledeethumps", but once you find some favorites, you'll remember the lingo. Don't miss the Scotch Eggs, possibly the best late night snack to go with a pint or three of the amazing and unique brews available.

nice local spot
The menu is a bit small and is definitely pretty meaty (I am a vegetarian) but the service is always gracious and pleasant, and they make nice drinks. Live music some nights is icing on the cake. I wish the chairs were more comfy (they are NOT) and that they'd serve just one vegan thing at brunch other than the fruit. But in all, I like the Haven, it is a charming spot, it is always clean, and their truffled rutabaga at dinner is a surprisingly yummy dish.

A little taste of Scotland
We found The Haven on line and read good things about it. It was walking distance from our hotel which made it even better. Despite the 98 degree temperature outside, it was nice and cool inside. The staff were very friendly and had great Scottish accent. The menu features authentic Scottish fare and drinks. My wife had the stuffed peppers and I had the homemade chicken sausage. They were AMAZING! Plenty of food at a very reasonable price. I would highly recommend The Haven. It's easy to get to. Take the Green E line to the end at Heath St. It's about a 5 minute walk from there.
7/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
We enjoyed the cozy ambiance of a corner table near the bar. The bartender/owner and the hostess are efficient and affable. Come for the selection of Scottish beers unique in Boston, and stay for the savory comfort food! Particularly good are the house made white pudding chicken sausage with garlic mashed potatoes and parsnips; the stuffed peppers redolent of Indian spices; the cullen skink, a cream of potato and green onion soup with smoked fish; and the smoked fish plate. (Smoked fish goes so well with good beer!)

Haven still a haven
Love this little neighborhood gem. Great bar food, delicious scallops, vegetarian options, and of course, warm ambiance. Can't go wrong with a night here!

The Haven...two words you must try
From its delicious food and drink selections to its friendly service, everything about The Haven is delightful. Walking in to the restaurant feels like arriving home and we're always treated like family. Have a burger? Ask to ring the bell if its the best you've tasted. Try haggis and you'll be amazed and wonder why you've never tried it previously. Have fish supper, have anything and everything because its all tremendous. Typically I order the same thing at restaurants, but at The Haven everything is lovely. Enjoy it all

A delightful evening, the scallops were delicious and the beer (Black Cuillin) fantastic!

Great find - The Haven
Enjoyed a wonderful dinner at the Haven. Excellent Scottish food and beer. A fun culinary adventure in a great atmosphere. Highly recommended.

Scottish food in JP
They didn't seem to have our open table reservation - the hostess was not around, and service was a bit slow, but the food was great once there, and a fun atmosphere for the neighborhood.

It felt like home...
The Haven has captured the very essence of every one of the "old school" Scottish homes and bars I've ever visited. The food was phenomenal and I just instantly felt like I was visiting a pub that I had been to before. The staff is friendly and it just has a casual and comfortable feel. I'll be heading back, for sure - but can imagine as the days get colder this will become a winter favorite place to seek warmth. It's great! Loved the haggis (yes, really!), bridies, scallops and pear salad. The dense bread and butter reminded me of home. :) All great.

A piece of Haven!
This place never disappoints. The food in unique and excellent. If you like Haggis - it's super yum. If you've never had it - it's the only place to try it. But, the have a wonderful selection of food for both dinner and lunch. The bar is warm and inviting - a piece if Scotland in JP. The beers are great and they've added some cocktails to the menu which is awesome. I would certainly recommend this place to others - go, have fun, try something new and bask in Andy's wonderful Scottish accent!
8/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
good food and great fun
I've been to the haven twice now and had great experiences both times. The fish and chips is the best I've had in Boston and the beer and cocktail selections are both very well thought out.
9/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great Scottish restaurant. Never a disappointment at the Haven. The owner s fantastic, the waitstaff is attentive and the food is always delicious.

Great Scottish food! Waiter
Great Scottish food! Waiter was great. Beer was delicious. Haven't had a Belhaven since I was in Scotland. Looking forward to going back.

Brought friends to this great spot we'd visited before. Everyone enjoyed the great imported beverages. Cullen Skink chowder was a hit with our friends - commented on the lovely smoked scent. Fish and Chips had batter with perfect crunch - fries were stolen from my plate for those having the stuffed peppers and vindaloo - although they ate their meals too fast for us to snag a taste back.
9/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
first trip to the Haven
I have wanted to try this place for a while and I'm glad I did. I had the stuffed peppers and a stout. Everything was great. The food was excellent. Our server was very nice and friendly. It was a Monday night, so we lucked out getting high seats by the window. Very entertaining, many dogs walking about the neighborhood as it is right across from the MSPCA. There are many more items on the menu I want to try so I will be visiting again soon for sure. Thank you for an excellent dinner.

Loud, Fun, Flavorful
We had a great time; even my stuffy suburban parents who can be quite annoyed when they don't like a place. Enjoyed our food; Hubs is a veggie and appreciate options beyond the ubiquitous veggie burger. The staff was great about seating my group at a large-enough table with space for a hand-sy kid. It's quiet with few people in the restaurant, then gets quite loud, so a JP kiddo who's used to going out will do fine and not annoy others.(No changing table.) Lotsa great beer options; small wine list. Rustic feeling, but clean and fresh. Street parking not an issue even during Open Studios. A new standard choice for us. James Gate wins for similar rustic space/ kiddo-love, this place kills it with better food, adult and not townie scene.
9/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
The beer-pairing was A M A
The beer-pairing was A M A Z I N G! Kelpie was my favorite, and the service was appropriately engaging! We really enjoyed ourselves. The vindaloo was tasty. We loved everything. Thank you so much for a great experience, we'll be back with friends!

Great Find with Great Food
This is one of my favorite restaurants in JP. The food is amazing! We love to go for brunch--I especially recommend the quiche. It is always filled with different seasonal vegetables and always delicious. Dinner is great there too. You really can't go wrong with The Haven. It has a friendly, inviting environment great for groups with outstanding food. I highly recommend it.

Great neighborhood restaurant in JP
A consistent ly good food experience in JP. Scottish Fare with a great taste and preparation. For the Beer lover this is a perfect place. The wine list is very limited.
10/4/2013 12:00:00 AM
Never a bad meal here
Everything's fresh and delicious here from the oatcakes, sweet butter, and pickled fennel beginng to the sticky toffee pudding ending. In between, try any rabbit dish on the menu if its there. Otherwise, finnan haddie, cullen skink, pear and ayr cheese salad, smoked fish, fish and chips, roasted chicken are all great bets.

Great food with Scottish flair!
My cousins were up to visit and I felt the best place to go to dinner was The Haven! Our grandmother was from Scotland and the 3 of us love to visit. We feel like we are transported across the pond when intact it's only a couple miles away. I love the decor and the homey feel. The food is great and we love the selection of Scottish beer. A great experience!
10/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
If it's not Scottish....
This was our 2nd or 3rd time at the Haven. The menu is unusual for Boston; can't think of another Scottish restaurant. Fresh ingredients, unusual flavor combinations. I especially loved the minty, mushy peas that came with my light crisp fish and chips. Great beer and Scotch list as you might imagine. Funky hunting lodge decor is fun. The vibe is lively!
10/26/2013 5:00:00 PM
Great time practically guaranteed!
One of my friends in the group has food allergies. Our waitress, Alison, was phenomenal; she exceeded our expectations ensuring everyone in my group would have a safe, pleasant, delicious dining experience. We all had an awesome time.
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
can't ask for more
Our table was ready as soon as we got there and they were flexible about letting us choose which of the open ones we wanted. Food was all excellent, including the scotch egg, haggis, amd fish & chips (might've been the best I've had). Cozy vibe, rare Scottish beer selection, and good orices all make this place a winner.
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
The online reviews about this place were not lying, the burger has a delish flavor and condiments. Scottish food, who knew?
11/9/2013 4:00:00 PM
The place was bustling and I was glad we had made an OpenTable reservation. We were seated in a great spot. Our server, Diana, was superb. We asked for her input on some choices and we were not steered wrong. The food was amazing. My daughter had the scottish deviled eggs for an app. I had the vegetarian special. My daughter's meal was delicious. We were delighted by gluten free options. We eat out alot but were struck by how well taken care of we felt, remarkably so. Our meal was capped by a fried Mars bar, scrump-tious! I can see why the line was so long to get in and why people linger over their meals at this haven. An added treat was the bagpipe/guitarist. We will be back, probably for Sunday brunch, as we hear it is quite good.
11/21/2013 4:00:00 PM
Loved that a guy wore a kilt.....how can you go wrong??!
11/22/2013 4:00:00 PM
Creative menu--out of the ordinary Scottish cuisine, great beer selection.
Excellent service. Defnitely make a reservation--it is a small place and they had to turn away a crowd of would be diners.
Going back again this weekend.
11/29/2013 4:00:00 PM
This is my second time having brunch at The Haven and it was even better than the first! Get the breakfast sandwich. You won't be disappointed.

Wonderful spot in JP
Last minute, looking for a place with good ambience and equally good food. Found it at the Haven! Jason has done a wonderful job there. And so friendly too! Enjoy
