I used to live in Japan so can be quite picky about my Japanese food. This place makes delicious fresh and authentic treats. The fit out is charming and the atmosphere is calm and warm. There seemed to be a few first dates the night we went. So perfect for a little romance too

Excellent prix fixe menu changing
Excellent prix fixe menu changing by the month, $55 per person for five courses last week. A la carte also very good. Inventive chef but never playing fancy games. I'm not really a wagyu beef fan but theirs is well worth trying, hot stone cooking. Fish fresh of course, classic sashimi and two or three cooked fish dishes which are changed seasonally. Good sake list. Delightful staff, very good atmosphere and tables not crowded together. About my tenth or so visit and I've never been disappointed.

Very friendly and attentive
Very friendly and attentive service. When our table wasn't ready at the reserved time, the owner gave us drinks on the house while we waited and then a free appetizer with the meal. The "Uni Lover" dish is not to be missed for all Uni lovers.

Definitely lived up to its reviews. Service was outstanding. Pace of courses was perfect. Food was excellent. Authentic Japanese food, not just a sushi establishment. Did I say the service was outstanding?

Small Gem on East Side...
Packed into a small space are three things that make Wasan great: good food, great drinks and fantastic service. We ate from the prix fixe menu which was 5 courses that you can select from, each with its own character, but totally complementary. The food was fresh and came out as if on queue, not too quick and not too slow. My glass was always full (and if you like sake, this is the place to go) and there was always a server in the wings if you needed something. There is a small bar with about 6 chairs and I noticed folks were able to eat there so if you are flying solo this is a great choice. Make a reservation if you are with a group. I hope you enjoy as much as I did. Cheers.

Surprising good food and friendly
We went on a nice evening so they had the doors open and it felt quite nice to watch the street while you ate. We certainly had the uni lover roll as one of the appetizers and it was very good. We also ordered sashimiand it was quite good. For entrees I order the Eel, very good and my husband the hamachi jaws which were also very interesting. For desert we had a brownie that came with salt on the side, I loved that, since I don't like desserts that much and the addition of salt gave the brownie a more interesting twist. The service was friendly. Most of the patrons were Japanese and this gave it a more authentic feel.

Always a treat
My second time there. This time ordered the course menu at $45. Really reasonable and a good selection of what Wasan has to offer but I kept looking at the dishes that were being served to other tables. Will definitely go again.

Great Sake list
Good Sake list. If you like Sake, you should try. Food is good too.

sweet sweet uni
I didn't try their $45 set, but there are quite a lot of options to choose from for each course. Tried the uni lover and it was fantastic as everyone so commonly says...it seems expensive for a bite, but I think sushi a la carte costs about the same. Food is plated beautifully and the location of the restaurant is off from St. Mark's so it's definitely not as crowded. The tables seem to be cramped against the wall (the kind where you literally have to shift the table out in order to get out), but the high ceiling gives the room more space. Most importantly, love the tea they serve! (Genmaicha? Roasted and rounded taste.) Not ur avg green tea.

A night in Japan
Delicious japanese restaurant for the ones willing to go the extra mile beyond sushis & tempura!
80% of customers are from Asian origin which is always a very good sign :-)
The service is excellent and the food quality very good as well!
Furthermore, the value for money is way above average!
Book a table & discover this great East village place to start your evening!

Cozy "nouveau" style Japanese restaurant with very good food and service. Can get noisy when crowded.

Creative Modern Japanese
What a find! Greeting and subsequent service was warm and well paced. Cold cheese Tofu was a tofu lover's delight-cool, silky texture, just the right degree of density with dashi & tomato jelly perfect accompaniments. Eel Empire satisfied my eel cravings, moist, not too sweet, unctuous. mmmmm. Hamachi Jaws were a little bit dry due to deep frying but very flavorful. Mochi ice cream was good but too frozen for my taste, it reminded me of commercial version, a bit of a disappointment. Tea hd a very pleasant toasted grain flavor. I can't wait to go back. Exceptional sake list

The food was excellent! I was surprised by the quality of food for its price. Everything we ate was fresh and the taste was sophisticated. Highly recommend going there with friends, romantic dinner or family.

Would return without a coupon!
My friend and I first came here because we had a coupon but we both decided to come back soon. The food was very nice- we had the tartare, the hot stone sirloin and the tuna bowl. It's not a huge menu, but it seemed like there were plenty of options. They have a nice selection of sakes as well.

Food done right
Have eaten here several times since it opened and never disappointed. It is unique twists on Japanese food without going totally off the reservation. The prix fixe menu at $45/head complemented by several extra tasting dishes was our choice. Each dish better than the previous. The fish was very very good.
These guys do it right - and the price is right.

Innovative Modern Japanese
Cold Cheese Tofu & eggplant appetizers, Eel Empire & Yellowtail marinated on sake lees and a bottle of Shintaro sake were all exceptional. Only their desserts are a bit of a letdown.

Magic at the Table
They're cooking with some kind of fairy dust at Wasan. This most recent of several meals proved splendid as always. From the welcoming, informed and gracious staff, to what comes from that kitchen -- where a certain genius of the Japanese palate reigns...It can not often be said that every bite of a meal, and each subsequent presentation delights and astonishes so consistently. Sake list also lovely. Planning to return often.

Hidden little spot
Wasan is my favorite Japanese restaurant in NYC that I don't tell too many people about for fear of ruining the quiet ambiance that I love. The best way to order at this place is to get the course menu -- you won't regret it, unless you're not hungry. Desert is not their forte so you can skip it.

The service is slow at times.
The service is slow at times. It seems that the kitchen takes forever to prepare anything! But I keep coming back for the uni. The eel rice and hamachi jaws also never disappoint. The entree portions are a lot bigger than expected for a Japanese place!

a special place
Delicious, creative, locally sourced where possible. Chef Kitagawa has created something very special at Wasan. We are still spreading the word to our friends after a delightful dinner at Wasan earlier this week. The tasting menu was terrific, from appetizers to dessert.

I come here for the mellow atmosphere and great service and of course for the Uni Lover and Foie Gras sushi...

Never lets me down
I've lived in Japan so tend to be picky when it comes to Japanese. This place is the real deal. Half the crowd were Japanese on our last visit which is a wonderful endorsement.
10/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
creative and authentic
This small neighborhood Japanese is truly Japanese, a fact confirmed by the majority of its patrons, They have a unique and broad selections of sakes along with wine and beer, and the food is flavorful and exquisitely prepared. The service is friendly and helpful, and we were treated to some rare and expensive off menu sakes when we participated in the 'sake flight.'
It was a superior dining experience, I'll definitely be back. If your'e looking for a 'scene' this is not it but it was a memorable dining experience for our group, for all the right reasons.

Special anniversary 6-course menu
I came here on Monday evening to try the 3-year anniversary 6-course menu offered during the week of 14 Oct. For me, the portion was just right and it was like having several tapas. I had Chawanmushi, grilled salmon/scallop dish, the pork with Shiodare sauce, among other things. They were all very tasty. The server was courteous, and he frequently stopped by to make sure everything was OK at the table. My only complaint was when I walked in, many tables were empty and I had a reservation, yet, I was initally offered a seat at the bar area. Only after I declined, I was offered seating at one of the tables.

Authentic but Modern
Wasan offers wonderfull authentic Japanese foods in a modern fashion. It is highly recommended to a couple or small group who love Japanse foods.

I enjoyed Wasan's high quality authentic Japanese food with reasonable price, and would like to bring my friends for the next time.

Delicious and creative food
The foie gras sushi was amazing, very creative and unique twist to both sushi and foie gras! The tasting menu is a great way to try different items on the menu and to share as well. Server was very attentive but did not hover. Overall, a great experience.
