It's location is a bit out of the way, but the room is lovely, the service is attentive without being cloying, and the food is incredible. Had a lovely root vegetable soup, some of the best homemade blood sausage I've ever had, and some very well prepared salmon.

Worth every penny!
Our very first visit to Montreal was memorable by three places: Notre Dame, St.Joseph's and LALOUX! The food was not only delicious but is at a different level. The scallop entree, the trout/shrimp appetizer and the citron tart are MUST haves. Having lived in New York, I've tried few good restaurants in NY but this certainly tops some of the great restaurants in NY. The creativity; the combination of flavors and texture; and the excellent service of the staff were absolutely impeccable. We would make sure to go back to Laloux on our next trip and feel you are missing out on living in Montreal if you haven't tried Laloux.!

Food was exceptional, service impeccable. I can't believe this restaurant has been around 25 years and I have only now discovered it.

Classic neighbourhood bistro
High ceilings and white table clothes create an inviting atmosphere. The food is very good as is the service.

Classic French Cuisine
I was in Montreal for the Grand Prix du Canada and tried two restaurants while there: Vallier and Laloux. Both were excellent.
Laloux has more classic French ambiance (think wall mirrors and white table linen), while Vallier has bare tabletops but a somewhat more creative menu. Laloux offered ramp vichysoisse, calve's liver a point, and soft Greek cheese with comb honey and nuts. Vallier offered green tomato gazpacho with horseradish, duck confit raviolis with pulled duck meat, mushrooms, cream and arugala and left me too full to order desert. The tab (before tax and tip) was about $65 at both places including two glasses of wine. I would be happy to return to either.

A versitile gem
This was my second visit to Laloux. The first time was with business colleagues, the second time was with my wife. On both occasions I came away impressed with quality of the staff and the fabulous plates the chef produced. The ambiance is versatile enough to accommodate a relaxing meal with friends, a business lunch with colleagues, or a romantic dinner with a significant other. I look forward to sharing this little gem with friends.

Some of the best food I've ever had
I've been to a lot of french restaurants, some of them a great deal more expensive, but this was by far one of the best I've eaten at. I had the chef's tasting menu with wine pairings. Each dish was very fresh, flavorful, and exciting. The food was beautifully plated, and each dish complemented the next very well. I will be visiting here again the next time I'm in Montreal, and I would strongly recommend it to anyone who is visiting and looking for a unique flavor.

Wonderful French Restaurant
Dined here for our 42nd Anniversary while vacationing in Montreal. The servers were wonderful. Three different servers attended to all of our dining needs, with a smile ang excellent advice. The food was delicious. Perfctly prepared with a beautiful presentation. Will definitely dine here again when we return to Canada.

Fodor's consistently provides
Fodor's consistently provides us with great advice for our travels & Laloux is another example. We couldn't resist sitting outside on a lovely evening & the bushy trellis provided just enough barrier to the street. The appetizers were inspired! Ramp vichyssoise was beautiful & delicious, as was the cucumber salad. My husband's beef tenderloin & my salmon were beautiful & prepared just to our liking. We only hope there is time this trip to return for what look like incredible desserts!

Excellent wine list and knowledgabl
Excellent wine list and knowledgable wait staff. Authentic, well-seasoned French food. Highly recommend.

solid and innovative
Was here on vacation. When I travel, I eat. This was a solid, innovative restaurant with some great food. They were accommodating of a friend's allergies and the food was really surprising.
But the highlight by far was the dessert. This deconstructed lemon tart with rosemary marshmallow, grapefruit and pepper sorbet...it was OUTSTANDING. It overshadowed all of the other plates (and they were not shabby). But whoever eats here should safe room for the dessert.
And the gin/granny smith apple cocktail.

really amazing food and great
really amazing food and great space in fun Montreal neighborhood. The servers were nice but service was not quite up to par. Would go back for sure next time we're in Montreal.

was referred by a friend and he was
Yes, every way it meet my expectation except they sat us in the middle of the Isle, very weird to say the least. Other than that, serving staff and food excellent!

The best sweetbreads in the Western Hemisphere. Everything is fresh and local ((Canadian local). We ate here 25 years ago and my wife wrote "excellent" on the business card then. Still "excellent". People take cabs to get here and many keep returning weekly. Pricing is a bit steep but the quality, presentation and service are friendly and professional. Go!!

Have been to Laloux a number
Have been to Laloux a number of times over its long and exceptional history, but I have to confess I was disappointed for the first time on this visit. It seemed the chef was trying to impress, but was overcreative and in my opinion some of the combinations just didn't harmonize. The uncooked foie gras on a piece of cake didn't work for me and the chunk of Canadian ham was a distraction on the magret de canard. I prefer more traditional preparations where the chef adds just a little personal twist to the dish in the sauce or the accompaniments. Otherwise, service, ambience was usual Laloux excellence.

Solid French Restaurant
Overall the food was very good, even for the fairly high prices. Service was very welcoming and the inside of the restaurant is very nice. It was quite bright and we could clearly here other patron's conversations. Unfortunately the table next to us was four middle-aged business people from Ontario who basically spent the whole time talking about what ballers they were. Not really our crowd, there are better places in the Plateau for young people.

Reminds me of Paris!
We went to Laloux while on a long weekend in Montreal. It was a wonderful experience! The food was some of the best we've ever had. The foie gras appetizer was amazing ! (and I don't normally really like foie gras). It was such a wonderful mix of flavors and textures. You much try it! I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone. A big THANK YOU to the chef and wait staff for making it such a memorable meal!

Fine, eclectic restaurant
We shared five dishes (instead of the tasting menu) with an excellent 1999 Languedoc. The simple salad was an excellent foil for the terrine of foie gras, which is served with buckwheat honey. The sweetness of the honey complements the foie gras as well as sweet white wine. The main courses (filet of beef and bar) were perfectly cooked and nicely complemented with a selection of vegetables. The tarte au citron was superb. All around a fine meal, very reasonably priced.

Disappointed in food
We were here last Fall and had a great meal so decided to return when we visited Montreal again. Setting, service and wine still good but we thought the food was only ok at this visit. I had the pea risotto and my husband had the duck. We both thought that It was good but not great
8/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food is delicious, beautifully
Food is delicious, beautifully presented and of the highest quality. Dishes are imaginatively constructed with each element contributing to the overall harmony. Sweetbreads are perfectly cooked.

Too complicated. But great service!
You need a Ph.D. in gastronomy to figure out everything that comes on your plate. I think i lost count of the number of things on my entree plate. Don't get me wrong, the flavours are good, there are just too many of them. If they dropped like 4 ingredients off the entree, would have been perfect. I'm no expert, but to me French food is supposed to be simple. You have to impress people with quality, not quantity of things on your plate.
One thing i'll say is that the desert was perfect. It still had like 5 different things on the plate, but it was a lot less complicated :)
Service was excellent.
Overall, I'd still recommend this place. But I hope the chef realizes that simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication.

First time, great experience!
First time to laloux, we both had the duck margret and in house chacutterie board to start, everything was excellent! For sure will return again!

We had an absolute wonderful
We had an absolute wonderful evening, the food was fantastic and the service impeccable! Dennis and David made the evening very fun and special for us! Tooooooooo bad Laloux is not in Washington DC, we would go at least a couple of times a month. But we just might have to get back to Montreal very soon!
8/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
a Montreal favorite
Pretty room, comfortable, great service--helpful wait staff treated us well even though we were obviously from out of town and our party included two teenagers. But the main point is that the food was exceptionally good. Many small details that add up to serious eating without the sky-high prices or formality. By no means inexpensive, but there was a lot of effort behind that meal, and expertise. Charcuterie plate included spectacular liver mousse; tomato salad on charred eggplant slices with many other things going on to make it really interesting; perfect arctic char and seared scallops; etc. Second visit, consistently good. Not as frenetic as L'Express, BTW.

Overall good bet
We had 4 main dishes all were gracefully planed with good sides , however my daughter had the Duck breast which was well cooked but one of the sides absolutely ruined the dish for her ( the centre of a sunflower pod). She could not finish the dish. No attempt was made to replace the dish.
We told our server, no visit from either the manager or chef, nor was the dish credited from the cheque.
I mentioned it at the time of payment & the waitress stalled. Her tip was therefore reduced from for not taking more proactive action.
We had three great desserts but were not served filtered coffee, they only have bitter espresso.

Beautiful, Amazing Meal
Well plated, great flavors, interesting selections and a fair price

Wow, a hidden gem
This first appears as a modest bistro but everything about will blow you away. First off, we asked about wine and they sent the sommelier over. Not quite what you would expect from a bistro. They have a really huge wine list. His recommendations were well thought out and turned out to be a perfect match for the food. Each course was perfect and a better and better surprise. I started with quail and local mushrooms picked that day by the chef. Simply amazing flavours. This was followed by mackerel. Awesome flavours and textures. The service matched or exceeded anything you would find in a high-end restaurant. The interior is nice but bistro style. Prices are very modest for the quality. We are definitely returning.

Second Visit As Good As the First
The attractive but minimalist decor here (white curtains, mirrors, dark wood) reflects the fact that the focus is on the food and wine. These folks are serious about their cooking and are very good at it. This was my second visit to Laloux (not easy to reach from Maine) and I look forward to my third. I appreciate the fact that they saved the table I had requested in the NW corner.

Inspired meals, fabulous experience
Laloux will go down in infamy for being the absolute best meal we've had in a restaurant. We came to Montreal for a few days to celebrate my husband's birthday. Laloux was our "splurge" meal, although the prices are actually pretty reasonable compared to DC. Especially when you see the quality of the ingredients, the presentation of the dishes, and the refined taste of each dish.
We started with the foi gras and sea urchin mousse. Both were fantastic. The foi gras was served with fresh honeycomb. It was the best honey we've ever tasted! For dinner I had the arctic char, and the mister had hanger steak. Again both were so delicious.
The meal was absolutely amazing. We loved Laloux!

A nice new fine dining place to try
The food was pretty good. We liked the salmon appetizer and achar fish. The service was a little slow. The place is bright and elegant.

Excellent restaurant. The foie gras appetizer was delicious as was the Wagyu beef filet. Service was attentive. The less formal side of the restaurant was less stuffy and more relaxed.

Two thumbs up. It was absolute delightful. We cant wait to go again on our next trip to Montreal
10/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
Simply sublime flavors
We ate at the restaurant per TripAdvisor's recommendation and could not be more satisfied with the experience. The food is done in new french style, so the flavors are lighter and brighter. The urchin mousse with shrimp appetizer is by far one of the most amazing dish I have ever had (I live and eat nearly 90% of the time in NYC). The texture is light, the urchin flavor is delicately folded into the mousse, and the baby shrimp are sweetly accenting. The sweetbread was very well prepared (creamy, soft), unlike the ones I had at Vertige (dense, overcooked). The way the fall flavors are incorporated into the dishes (applies, pumpkin, squash) was simply amazing.
10/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
Good food , excellent service
We had terrine fois gras and salmon with beets for starters, and both were excellent. For the main course, we had tagliatelle with beef and duck maigret. They were good also, but not as tasty as the appetizers. The best part was the waitress. She was very pleasant with a nice smile the entire evening.
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
First positive experience

still great after all these years
I was a grad student at McGill 20+ yrs ago and ate here. Back last weekend with my daughter looking at universities. It is as wonderful maybe even more so now. Food was classical but very creative. Perfectly done. Really superb service.

Simple and romantic
I brought a date for dinner. Decor was simple and cozy. The corner seats were perfect for two lovebirds to enjoy a quiet dinner while you get lots of activity on the main floor. Food was exquisite, well portioned and very tasteful. Extensive wine list and the staff was friendly to explain and suggest good wines for our food. Sweetbreads are a must-try!
10/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
Interesting dishes but small main
We went for MTL a Table. The appetizers were delicious, interesting, decent portion size. The main was too small. I had quail and it was a 1/4 bird - just a leg...far too small. For the price, it was somewhat understandable but wish they had rethought the main dish (maybe chicken) given that the whole meal was for $19. I had profiteroles for desert and the serving was large. They could have given 1 instead of 2. They were delicious, great textures. Would recommend this place but would suggest they do not order the quail or to expect a small main dish.

c'etait la troisieme fois que j'allais a ce restaurant. c'était le loin la meilleure fois : présentation plus soignée, meilleure qualité de la nourriture et innovation. Jy retournerai

Typical french restaurant with an awesome service. It was excellent since our entrance, where they took our coats away till the end, when the dessert was simply outstanding. Typical french meals, but they deliver!

Always a treat
Excellent value for lunch. Lovely French bistro atmosphere....low noise level. It is so pleasant to hear be able to carry on a conversation at normal level while enjoying wonderful food. I have been going to Laloux for years and it has maintained high standards of food and service. I think it is my favorite Montreal restaurant.

11/9/2013 4:00:00 PM
We were greeted warmly upon our arrival. It was immediately clear that our waitress was keen to make our meal an experience and not just dinner. When we were ready to order, we asked for wine recommendations to pair with our courses. She asked a couple questions to discern the type of wines we enjoyed then selected two for each course that she wanted us to taste before making our final selection. I cannot say how impressed we were with this small act. For her to recommend two very fine wines and then let us select between them was most unexpected and thoroughly delightful! From the oysters to the dessert the meal was a wonderful experience that we both enjoyed. The service provided by our waitress was impeccable. We will be returning.

A great experience
We were four diners, three generations, looking for a special evening out in Montréal. At Laloux, we found it. In the lower Plateau Mont-Royal, the restaurant is at the corner of a residential street. It's a beautiful, quietly elegant room with - heaven be praised - no piped-in music. Every staff member treated us as if our evening was their first concern. The waiter guided us through menu and wine list with knowledge and patience.
The menu is French bistro with interesting departures. Meats and fish were beautiful cuts, impeccably prepared; seasonal vegetables received as much careful attention. Dessert was up to the level of the meal. A great experience from beginning to end.

A Fantastic Dining Experience
Went to Laloux for the first time with my wife on Saturday for dinner. The food was first-rate and the service was even better (you gotta try the Mousse au chocolate for dessert!). Our waitress was very kind and knowledgeable and helped us select wines to go with our meals. We're definitely coming back.

I've been here a few times and never left disappointed. The food is outstanding. Nice presentation, generous portions, you won't leave feeling hungry. The wine list is extensive with a great selection to choose from.
