At least try once
I chose this place for a date night w/ my husband. The building is so neat, and the menu has very untraditional (for Kansas City) items. Everything from goat to rabbit. We played it safe and got crab and steak, and tried delicious salads that we'd never tried before. Our waiter was very friendly and our food was out w/in 15 minutes of ordering.

Always a KC Dinner Destination
After discovering The Rieger (a friend took me), it has swiftly taken over the top ranks for dinner while in Kansas City. The menu is seasonally updated and is always balanced in choices. Even some of the pickiest eaters can find something to eat. The pairing are thoughtful and the sides are well prepared. I have now had the goat and the chicken dish while tasting the steak and the vegetarian (created nightly) dish. If you have time start the evening downstairs at the speak easy Manifesto for craft cocktails. The beautiful bell is one of the best cocktails I have ever had.

Our group tried several different
Our group tried several different entrees and only the catfish disappointed. The goat was a hit! Several particularly enjoyed the pork soup - very filling but delicious. Basil ice cream was unique and enjoyable, carrot cake okay and cookies nice. It was fun to try the cocktails which were creative and enticing - loved the unicycle. Our server (Annie) was one of the best we've ever had in KC.

Will definitely be back
Loved our experience here! came here for my birthday. Had a few drinks and snuck down to Manifesto for a cocktail as well. Our server was fantastic and the place was a lot of fun. Parking is a bit tricky, just watch where you park but if you have a special occasion or just want to try something new/old this is definitely the place!
6/4/2013 4:00:00 PM
Menu features goat, rabbit, offal, etc. Had goat and dining companion had rabbit. Both were excellent.
Only issue was lack of parking - their lot was full by 6:15 on a weeknight.

Great adventurous food
Food was great, unique cuisine using local farmer's products. The limited menu was nice and we tried some food we had never had before, Overall, a good experience, adventurous for the regular "meat and potatoes" diner.

My wife and I came here to have a great meal and spend our anniversary together. We had a great time and the place reminded us of time we have spent in Europe. Food was great and so was the staff!

Great experience all the way around
I would recommend The Rieger/Manifesto to anyone for a unique dining and cocktail experience. Every aspect of the restaurant delivered. We were seated right away. Our waiter had good suggestions and was very friendly. He put us on the waiting list for Manifesto. The cocktails upstairs and downstairs were amazing. I had the pork chop and my wife had steak. The sauces and sides mixed well with the main dishes and everything was cooked perfectly. I'm not a huge fan of carrot cake but my wife loves and it was the best carrot cake I've tasted. After dinner they got us right in to Manifesto. Excellent service again. If you get a chance I'd recommend sitting at the bar so you can watch them work their magic. Thanks Rieger for an excellent night.

The food was very good. I
The food was very good. I had the pork soup and the pork cheek. However, I don't know that I would rush back. It was very loud and the dining room wasn't even full. Also, I felt like the menu was trying too hard, trying to be adventurous.

One of KC's best
Not only is the food imaginative and creative, the service and atmosphere at the Rieger top it off nicely. Chef Howard does an excellent job combining local source organic ingredients to produce an innovative and evolving menu.

I brought my out-of-town parents here for my birthday and it was honestly the best meal that I've ever had. All of the drinks were perfect, meat tray was fantastic, and all four of our meals were to die for. I'm typically not a huge fan of goat, but the goat entree might be the best thing that I have ever tasted. I have never been to a restaurant where 4 meals were consistent and delicious like this one was. I can't wait to go back!

KC Dining Experience
The food and service in this downtown neighborhood bar and grill were excellent. The menu has delightfully prepared offerings, the wine list has a wonderful selection and the servers are cordial and well trained.

Fantastic restaurant! The menu was diverse, the service was excellent and the ambience really cool. I went for a business lunch and can't wait to take my wife.

One of my favorites
Been here 6 times since they opened, They make some neat food, and add new things to keep it interesting. The Drinks here are phenomenal. We are big time foodies, and The Rieger is better than Michael Smiths, Jacobson, Affaire, and Lidia's. As much as I like Rieger's food you will notice I did not give them 5 stars. On this visit the KC strip was noticeably smaller than previous times, and we ordered two things that had scallops in them. one was an app that had tomatoes and basil and the other was a Risotto. I bring these two up because they didn't really have scallops, they had one scallop sliced thin into multiple skinny scallops. For some reason that kind of rubbed me wrong and came off as being skimpy. But with that said I will return.

Great Dinner Experience
We celebrated my dad's 70th b-day... the server was GREAT. The family had a ton of questions and he patiently answered all of them. Made great recommendations as well. Overall we had a great time.
7/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
Passionate people w/ good food
Excellent service, friendly smiles, delicious food, and it was a pleasure to watch the talented chefs in the kitchen. We had a group of 4 sit at the kitchen counter and we were wow'd with every bite. This is a great dining experience.

Happy Lunch Date
I brought my boyfriend and family to the Rieger for his birthday lunch. Not only (by our luck) did we have the restaurant to ourselves, but the waitress we had and the entire staff was absolutely fabulous. We had great conversation with all of them, and much to our delight, the chef sent out a candle and macaroons out for my boyfriend to help celebrate. I have also eaten here for dinner a few times and highly recommend anything on the menu- this is truly a hidden gem in KC!
7/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
I took my son there to celebrate his 21st birthday with family. Totally classy inside with a unique menu and drink selection. My college son was blown away with atmosphere and historical significance of the building. Fantastic dining experience.

Classic City Feel
Was for some reason expecting larger and fancier but not in the least disappointed. Easygoing atmosphere and excellent food. Waitstaff appropriately attentive and helpful. Eclectic menu with fresh food. Manifesto downstairs is a bonus. You need to make reservations for this speakeasy separately from the restaurant.
7/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
Nice Experience at the Rieger
Loved the Kitchen-View seating as it provided entertainment through the evening watching the staff and their preparations. I had the lamb chops which were exceptional - best I've had in several years. Wife had the trout and liked it, she didn't care for the side dish. Service was attentive and knowledgeable, pricing was about right. Next time we'll venture to the bar upstairs for an after-dinner drink.

Farm to table at it's best
The menu is unique and eclectic. The food is executed with a lot of skill. The wine list is perfect for pairings. Every time we go to KC, we have to eat here!
7/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Maybe the best in KC
This is one fantastic restaurant! They change their menu quarterly therefore it is always interesting to see what is new! The braised beef short rib is unbelievable! This has to be the best tasting beef I have ever tasted. I love the atmosphere in the old hotel and the mystery of what is in the basement.
7/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
I took my daughter for her 10th birthday and we also went to the Taylor Swift concert, I swear my daughter tells more people about the meal!

Solid Local Cuisine But Overpriced
Had an enjoyable dining experience. Loved the pork confit soup. The rabbit dish was underseasoned but very lean and juicy. The steak was average but nice local vegetable sides to accompany it. The selection of local wines is also a plus. Come here if you want to sample basic Midwest fare with an eye to fresh local ingredients and some of the best cocktails in town.
8/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
So good. Best restaurant meal I've ever eaten. I would go over and over.
8/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great for a Girls' Night Out!
We had a lovely time. The food was amazing, and our server was attentive without being overbearing.
8/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
Amazing dinner out!
We were able to squeeze in for a special night out and just loved it! From the signature cocktails to the amazing food, it's well worth the trip to the Rieger! Don't forget to check out Manifesto for an extra special treat!

Great food eclectic menu
The menu offered some eclectic selections all very well prepared and delicious. I had the salmon special and it was quite tasty my guest had the shortribs which she enjoyed. We also sampled the scallop caprese, seafood risotto, and polenta. All very tasty. As a special surprise they presented my guest with french macaroons for her birthday which we enjoyed. It was busy for a Monday evening.

Vibrant Setting. Great Food!
We spent a lovely evening at The Rieger. Enjoyed a bottle of wine and shared the scallops as an appetizer. Our entrees were the stuffed rabbit, the trout and the scallops with risotto. Our server, Hilary, was delightful. She was friendly, knowledgable and we appreciated her recommendations.
8/29/2013 5:00:00 PM
This was a wonderful dining
This was a wonderful dining experience....the food was fabulous and the menu was quite unique. Three of us dined together and we each ordered something different, and shared tastes with each other. Every dish was delicious and wonderfully prepared. Our waiter was helpful, although he really wouldn't give us directions as to one dish over any other....but that's only because he COULDN"T--they were all good! The ambience was delightful--loved that a lot of the original building remains.
The only negative we found here was the noise level, which may be due to the high ceiling and open room. We were at a center table and it was difficult to hear one another during conversation. Perhaps a table closer to the wall would have been quieter?
9/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
Dinner was Delicious
We shared the Seafood Risotto as an appetizer, then split their house salad which was mixed greens, bwets, jicama, and other lovely and colorful items. The salad was beautiful! My spouse had the special which was braised goat. Neither one of us had tasted goat before and this was melt in your mouth yum. I had the pork chop which was outstanding. Our waiter was very attentive and fun. It was a very dun and delicious dinner. We truly enjoyed our experience and will be back!
9/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
Fantastic as always
The Rieger is our spot to indulge a little. Their steaks are the best in the city...my husband calls it a mood changer. And, I love the eclectic flavors and drinks. I've tried almost everything on the menu and no complaints yet. Their Shandy and Lemon Drop Martinis are the best. Our servers are always great at recommendations and letting us sample things we might like. Will continue to be our spot!!
9/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
The best lobster roll I've ever had....and in KC, not Maine! Scrumptious brioche 'bun", lots of perfectly not over-cooked lobster meat, minimal dressing, house-made chips. This is a lunch fit for royalty.
9/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food was amazing! Chef Hanna
Food was amazing! Chef Hanna is a food genius!! We loved everything we ordered!

Food for the senses
Vibrant colors in this simple salad of mixed greens, tomatoes and baby vegetables. The subtle dressing didn't mask but enhanced the flavors of the vegetables . Braised and smoked beef short ribs. Think of the best corned beef you have ever had then kick it up two notches. First you taste the saltiness and then the beefy flavor and finally the smoky flavor and if that isn't enough a touch of horseradish mustard. The creamy polenta is the perfect accompaniment. Basil infused pana cotta. I could smell the basil as this dessert was brought to the table. Silky smooth and not too sweet with a lingering taste of Basel after each bite.

One of Kansas City's Best
The Kansas City restaurant scene has improved markedly in the last ten years. Diners here have more and better options than ever before. That said, there are still only a handful of places that rise to the level of excellence in dining. Howard Hanna's Rieger Hotel Grill and Exchange is one of them. The vibrant atmosphere, attentive service and a very strong menu of (mostly) locally sourced ingredients make this a restaurant that I frequently recommend.
On this visit I took advantage of a new fall menu item - Roasted Bone Marrow and Crispy Oysters - a combination that, while not being particularly obvious, worked well for me.
Don't pass up the chance for a cocktail or two. The bartenders here are among the best in town.
10/10/2013 5:00:00 PM
Good restaurant to which to take out of town guests. Feels like a hip Brooklyn spot.
10/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
We dined at the Rieger Hotel for a special occassion (Boss's Day) and we thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and the food. The lunch offerings were a bit limited, but we all found options that we liked. The brussel sprouts were the best I've had!
10/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
Chef Howard Hannah has a tasty gem on his hands. He is a nose to snout guy, and seems to have converted his staff, so don't be surprised if they recommend the tripe or something.
Don't worry, there are many more common options on the menu. All delicious. The pork soup is always on the menu- unctuous like French onion but with shreds of tender braised pork.
He usually has 4 pasta courses, all appetizer sized and nice priced at about $10 each. My wife and I often share all four and eschew entrees. He's cool with that.
Get seats at the kitchen bar if you want to watch the chefs. I like that. The place is a bit noisy, but not uncomfortable.
Get the octopus if on the menu. It comes on and off.

We saw you on "Check Please"
We saw you on "Check Please" on KCPT. This was our first experience at Rieger. It will be one of our go to spot for special occasions. The food was prepared and presented beautifully. The wait staff was the best we have experienced in the KC area. Andy was our server and knew the menu, preparation, ingredients and flavors. We ordered what she recommended and we were very pleased with the choices as the menu uses ingredients that you don't find often. The cocktails were perfect. The only complaint I must add is the seating was not to our liking. Very small space, to close to the next table. We sat on the bench wall. I would recommend the Rieger Hotel Grill and Exchange.
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
Different and Good
The menu was very different with lots of local fall offerings. We enjoyed ourselves and the service was very good. Stemware very nice to go with the large wine list with reasonable prices.
10/22/2013 5:00:00 PM
Reunion with foodie friends
Our guests were quite pleased with the menu, wine, and cocktails. We enjoyed steaks, trout, and delicious salads. The tour of Manifesto intrigued our visitors.
10/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
The experience was great in a very cool old hotel. The food was very good with some unique options. The only problem we had was there isn't much traditional fare on the menu it's a little too unique!
10/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
watch the cooks at work
if you sit at the bar overlooking the kitchen, you can interact with the chef, and the cooks. Staff were friendly, food innovative, wine list a bit light for my BIG red tastes but overall good expereince

Always a pleasure
It's been awhile, but the Rieger never disappoints. Consistently delicious and a great place to try out new things. Had my first trip this week -- loved it! Took my bosses -- a first time for both and one is a real foodie -- and they both loved it. Hopefully won't be as long before returning! Looking forward to seeing what Chef Hanna does with Ca Va, his new sparkling wine bar in Westport, opening soon. Thanks, Reiger staff, front and back of house, for another wonderful meal.
11/5/2013 4:00:00 PM
unbelievably great fall menu. howard hanna, the chef, is very talented. the food was superb. great time was had by our whole party.

Delicious food, great ambiance
Rieger Hotel Grill and Exchange has a really interesting food selection and everything we tried was really delicious. The restaurant location is an historic hotel and the furnishings have the feel of a by-gone era. Service was excellent as well. Our server made an excellent wine suggestion.
11/12/2013 4:00:00 PM
Fun evening out.
The service was the best I have seen in a long time. The trout and steak were absolutely delicious and could not have been better. It was an energetic and fun evening. I would not recommend the cod special, however, but I would recommend the risotto and pork appetizer. I would go back just for those.
11/14/2013 4:00:00 PM
Not a cheap restaurant, but well worth it! Excellent service, unusual dishes (crispy bone marrow), wonderful ambiance. We will be back!

Had a delicious dinner upstairs and then headed downstairs to Manifesto for some excellent drinks!
