The snacks were outstanding,
The snacks were outstanding, presentation spectacular, and service was excellent. Every course was not only a delight to look at, but to eat as well. The chef even came to our table and asked how we enjoyed our meal!
Best restaurant for use of local ingredients and finding new ways to maximize the flavor combinations. This dinner could easily cost hundreds of dollars elsewhere.
Can't wait to see what's on the menu next time!

Overall, we really enjoyed
Overall, we really enjoyed Castagna. My only complaint was that the two top tables were very close together, making it virtually impossible to have private conversation. The food and presentation were very good, but quite expensive for the size.

The food was inventive, fun
The food was inventive, fun and excellent. There were some unusual items I have never had before. The thing that put me off about the experience was the prix faire menu. It was expensive considering the amount of food you received. I almost felt like I needed to go down the street for a burger afterward so I could be full.

I can't find words to express
I can't find words to express how good was this diner. It was perfect. Little pieces of heaven on your table. I loved it.

10 COURSE TASTING WITH WINE PAIRING
10 COURSE TASTING WAS RIGHT OUT OF A TOP CHEF TV SHOW. THE WINE PAIRINGS WERE A PERFECT FIT FOR EACH COURSE. SERVICE WAS WELL PACED. ENJOYED... AERATED DISH (SNOW). SMOKED PORK. RIB EYE.

Fabulous meal. Very inventive
Fabulous meal. Very inventive and delicious. I love coming here.

Must go here at least once
This is a place I would recommend everyone try at least once. It is a bit pricey so it would be more of a special occasion event for someone on a budget. The place is a bit small and the tables are too close together, but if you are there early enough they try to stagger seating so you aren't next to someone else. The wait staff was excellent and very attentive. As soon as we were done with one course they were there with the next course. It was fun to try the variety of snack items they keep serving. Food portions are pretty small. We left full, but not overly full. You won't be leaving with a doggy bag. All in all it was a very good experience and we hope to eat there again.

Wonderful night out!
Castagna is a great place to go - it is more than just a place to eat, it's a culinary experience! The waitstaff is prompt, attentive and knowledgeable. The entire meal was delicious, adventurous and fun.

Loved Castagna ! All agreed, one of our best meals ever! Love the small appetizers that just keep coming. Love the server describing every dish being served. The flavors were subtle, surprising and always excellent! A wonderful evening!

Castagna is a very special restaurant. There are plenty of good food places in Portland, but not like this. The pace of the meal is just right and the quality of each morsel is mind-blowing. From the rye muffins (awesome) to the little egg salad snack (incredible), everything is spot on. The meal itself took us over 2 hours and while I had food throughout I didn't leave stuffed and uncomfortable. It's a delicate meal worth every penny.

Castagna Keeps Shining
I have been going to Castagna since the year it opened. I've watched the menu change and chefs come and chefs go. I was dubious when the format shifted to a quasi molecular gastronomy meal. And then the deft touch of Matt Lightner won me over. I was not happy to see him leave. I have had a few of Chef Justin's meals. All are good but there are times when they don't hit great. The meals my date and I had last Saturday night were beyond great. Everything was clicking and working. I'd have liked to see a few of the "snacks" as larger versions and as a real menu option. The flavors and combinations and platings on the snacks left me wanting so much more. The wine pairings were also spot on. I have been to Coi in SF. Give me Castagna any day.

One of the best restaurants in PDX
I can not believe we waited this long to try Castagna. We will definitely be returning! Food was absolutely top-notch. A foodie experience but not over-the-top for the sake of "keeping Portland weird" if you know what I mean. Very good food, unique and creative combinations that work and beautifully presented. The wait-staff was friendly but professional and not hurried. A full experience, I just can't say enough. Keep up the good work!

Best Food in USA?
Truthfully, one of the finest chefs tastings anywhere in the states, especially if you have modernist inclinations. Because the flavors were so consistently superb across the entire tasting, this rates higher than Alinea or WD50, and I may have enjoyed it more than such stalwarts as French Laundry, EMP, Per Se.
Totally stunned that a 31 year old in portland oregon can turn out meals of this caliber.

Among the best
What a great restaurant we have found with the new chef Woodward in charge! We took the three course menu but the first course consisted of 5 miniature courses (snacks), all delicious excursions in unexpected flavors and consistencies as well as beauty for the presentation. The second course was hard to beat in flavors, rib-eye and ribs, and the accompaning sauce was extremely flavorful. Hazelnut desert was the third course, a must taste even my hard to impress wife loved, says alot We will be back soon to try the wine pairing..

This place should be packed. My only guess to why it isn't might be the higher price. In my opinion, you get your money's worth. The service was perfect and the food was out-of-this-world. I love the format of this restaurant. We did the Prix Fix menu and, even though the food kept coming (with perfect wine pairings), we didn't feel stuffed at the end of the meal. The food is creative, delicious, and beautiful. I believe Castagna to be one of the best, if not the best, restaurants in Portland.

Another spectacular meal.
Another spectacular meal. Thank you for making such soulful and honest food.

Impeccable service--efficient, friendly but professional. Bold, creative cooking and gorgeous artistic presentations. This is a superb restaurant.

Terrific tasting menu
We really enjoyed the chefs tasting menu and wine pairings.
A really nice dining experience for a special occasion.

European style dining
Prefixed dinner menu and every course was fantastic.

This is a kitchen that considers
This is a kitchen that considers every aspect of the diner's experience and challenges itself to prepare and present food with care, elegance and innovation. The first five snacks brought on several "wows" visually and palate-wise; the second course allowed for richly textured, subtle flavors to emerge; the third course satisfied the more classic presentation of entree, beautiful executed; and dessert was an elegant combination of nuts, creams, and sugars. The talent and care in the kitchen were evident; the dining room staff was knowledgeable, pleasant, and appropriately attentive; and the dining room remains one of the few in Portland that allows a conversation between more than two people to happen without having to raise your voice.

Excellent in every way (but one)
Took significant other to the restaurant at Castagna for a special occasion. Dinner on Saturday night. Each got the prix fixe -- got alternating dishes, so we were able to try everything. Food -- outstanding. Some of the best culinary delights in the city. Service -- also outstanding. Wine pairings were terrific. Really appreciated the detail & thought put into every dish -- including the 4 or 5 different types of 'snacks' served as part of the prix fixe menu. One slight issue would be the accoustics of the indoor restaurant. If there is a group there over 4 or 5, the sound will reverberate and make it difficult to hear your dinner mate(s). But not a big deal -- overall this is an exceptional dining experience.

Awesome tasting menu
Excellent foodie-worthy tasting menu. Listed at nine courses but you're in for a few surprises. Very reasonably priced. Tried both the vegetarian and meat menus and very happy with both.

The cuisine is original with excellent ingredients and exceptionally prepared and presented. Overall, this was an outstanding dining experience.

Best in Portland
WOW! What a wonderful dining experience - creative food - a feast for the senses - visually stunning and superb flavors - coupled with wine pairings. Chef's menus is worth the extra expense for a special occasion - Service was outstanding and staff knowledgable about the food. Hghly recommend you select this restaurant for your next dining event.

This is the definitive fine
This is the definitive fine dining experience in Portland - no other restaurant compares. The cuisine is as miraculously inventive as it is tasty. It can best be appreciated through the chef's tasting menu. The chef's tasting menu is a gift at $100/person. Castagna makes Portland a better city. Kudos to them for continuing to elegantly break the rules in a town famous for it good eateries, but still afraid of fine dining.

Feast for the eyes and the palate
Creative and adventurous in taste and appearance, Castagna is a worthy dining experience for the most die-hard foodie; truly one of the best restaurants anywhere in America.

Foo Foo Foodies
We came to Castagna for a special occasion and knew that we would be "splurging" on a nice dinner. I looked at the menu before making reservations but I guess I did not read it close enough...you only have two choices ~ Pre fixe for $65 pp or Chef Tasting for $110 pp. We went with the Pre fixe option. This gave us a nice opportunity to try new things. The first course "Snacks" were delicious small bites. The rest of the courses were delicious. He had the rib eye and I had the warm salmon. The presentation was divine. Just seemed like there was more effort put into the presentation than the food. Inventive plating and a variety of them. But the small amount of food that came with each plate made it a "foo foo" experience.
8/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
I haven't been to Castagna in years and was completely blown away. Course after course, excellently paced. Incredible delicate flavors interwoven with true presentation artistry. One of the best meals I have had recently. A++.

An under-appreciated gem
If I lived in Portland, I'd dine here at least once each month to enjoy the ever changing creative, beautiful and flavorful food that comes out of chef Justin Woodward's kitchen. Don't let the concept of a set-menu deter you - there are ample choices in each category to allow personalization of your meal. The 4-course dinner is a marvelous way to be introduced to modernist cuisine, but if time and budget allow I suggest definitely opting for the full tasting menu.
9/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
Castagna is a fantastic journey for any foodie looking for an experience outside of the normal dinner out. Castagna takes molecular gastronomy and ensures its success by making it approachable, delicious and artistic. The service is outstanding on top of it.
9/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
A marvelous example of molecular gastronomy. My wife and I had a creatively marvelous meal recently. Everything was prepared to perfection and presented with equal aplomb. Not inexpensive, but well worth the price. Highly recommended.
10/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
This was on of the best dining experiences ever. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys masterful cooking , presentation, creativity and an unending series of delightful surprises with one course to the next. The combination of "snacks" and the 10 course tasting menu with wine pairings provided an unsurpassed meal experience--and all these superlatives from a couple from the food mecca of San Francisco and the Sonoma/Napa wine country.

Best dining in Portland
Truly special. Exquisite food, every plate a work of art. We did the Chef's tasting menu. It's a long (4hour) and luxurious evening. Fantastic wine pairings, unexpected surprise dishes. Amazing!

We both had the three course
We both had the three course tasting menu and each ordered different items. All six were outstanding. Meal began with six additional small plates which were also very good. Service was professional and unpretentious. Highly recommend this restaurant.
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
The artistry of our meal was part of the wonderful evening we had at Castagna's. Every small morsel of the snack courses bursted with flavor and intrigue. The wine pairings were spot on and it was fun letting someone else make the choices. The main course of salmon was no doubt extraordinary, but to us a bit to smokey, which over powered the delicate fish. There was a table of six women having a joyous evening next to us. This was problematic for us as we had to shout at each other to have a conversation. Nothing the restaurant could do at this point but we should have asked for a different table.
We left feeling like we had had a delicious and special 21 year anniversary dinner. We were shocked to see that we had been there for three hours

As Great as It Gets!
Only 2 places in Portland currently exist that provide innovative, texturally-exciting. beautifully-presented
and simply delicious meals. Castagna Restaurant is one of them

Gracious Dining at Its Best
Castagna has been around for a long time and they continue to provide the perfect balance of spectacularly prepared and presented food, relaxing atmosphere, perfected service, and overall fabulous dining experience. We had a relaxing 3-hour 4 course dinner that was perfect in every way. I cannot sing their praises enough.

Prepare your senses
We had heard that Castagna is a culinary delight but it still didn't prepare us for the artful presentation and amazing flavors.
The tasting menu knocked our collective socks off, every calculated bite of it. The service was amazing and the little surprise treats that the chef and staff snuck in were delightful and very appreciated.

within the top 10
We chose to dine here for my partner's birthday while we were visiting Portland. We love excellent restaurants and have been lucky to eat at some amazing restaurants around the world. This meal was definitely on par with the best. The food is incredibly creative and tasty. The wine pairings we carefully selected and a perfect compliment to the meal. The service was excellent and completely unpretentious. They were informative and thorough but not pompous. The overall experience was very relaxed and we left feeling completely satisfied. We would highly recommend this to any of our friends.
11/14/2013 4:00:00 PM
One of Portland's best. Multiple small bites between courses combined with perfectly matched wines. Salvador, our waiter was on top of our every wish or question explaining all the ingredients that made the food and tasting experience so magical. Somewhat expensive but well worth the price. Not as pretentious as the Herb Farm in Woodinville, WA and everybit as good if not even better. Will definitely tell friends and plan on another visit next time we are down from Seattle.

It has been a while since we had dined here and were we totally blown away by the service and the food preparation and taste! They were on there game for service, from greeting us when we came in, sitting us, explaining the course, staying on top of the silver ware and plates, and helping us out. The food was uniquely prepared and extremely tasty. No question we will be back sooner, but with friends!
