A popular place among the locals who are recognized and acknowledge by staff. Mad batters best treats are of the seafood variety clam chowder with the chef adding a very generous amount of bacon. Their crab cakes are big and flavorful, a must try with their filet paring. Decent prices too and a popular happy hour.

Great food for all meals
Ate there several times during a recent trip as well as ate at other places. Hands down the best breakfast and dinner. French toast was amazing I ate it twice, mimosas were not shy of champagne, my husband enjoyed his poached egg with crab meat, and dessert was lovely!!

Great food and experience
During the day we walked by and the place was full of families but at night we were surrounded by couples who were also celebrating their anniversaries. We had the super lump crab cakes with four cheese macaroni, and remoulade, and the lobster ravioli with shrimp and crab scampi. Both dishes were delicious but the crab cakes definitely stood out. For dessert, we had a chocolate covered, chilled pear stuffed with I think a vanilla cream sauce and it was also very good. Our waiter was great, friendly and attentive. Definitely a restaurant to check out if in Cape May.

A Cape May Classic
This is a favorite eatery of mine to visit each time that I am in Cape May. My favorite dish is the Vegetable Wellington, a puff pastry full of tasty veggie delights. If you make a reservation, then you never have to wait long for your table. The staff is friendly and attentive. The deck is very pleasant to sit on and the menu is fun and eclectic. I will always eat here each time I am in town.

Special find in Cape May
Had dinner and brunch at the Mad Batter. Always wonderful - enjoyed the crab cakes for dinner. A fun spot in a historic section of town. Brunch can't be beat!

You'll never be disappointed
You'll never be disappointed at the Mad Batter. Exceptional and attentive service. Solid menu with plenty of super-fresh seafood choices as well as choices for landlubbers like me. Thanks to Sophia and Kelli, two of the best waitresses around! My wife and I never miss at least one visit to the 'Batter on each of our visits to Cape May.

Best Crab Cakes in Cape May
If you like great food, great service, in a casual yet elegant atmosphere, The Mad Batter will meet all of your needs. From the moment you arrive, you have a "this is the place to be" impression. The mixed drinks are fabulous. The food presentation is top notch. The wait staff is professional and attentive. The crab cakes are by far some of the best you will ever eat. We cannot say enough nice things about our experiences there.

This was our first time visiting Cape May and the Mad Batter came highly recommended by a friend from work. Just great! Loved the bohemian decor. Garden seating was cozy and peaceful. Most importantly the food was great. My husband had the Thai wings (appetizer) and salmon. I'm veggie and had the fettuccine puttanesca. Really good!!

Not sure if they have it every evening, but there was live music when we went. It wasn't too loud so didn't spoil things. Food was excellent and the place was very casual so I wish I had gone in my shorts rather than dressing up.

Night end to a quiet night away
My husband and I needed a night away and decided to go to Cape May. By recommendation from a co-worker, we decided to dine at Mad Batter for dinner and breakfast. The dinner was fabulous. Breakfast was also good, but nothing special. My husband got the award winning pancakes, but he said they were dry. Overall, we would visit again and try some new things.

Good place to eat!
We liked the atmosphere, although it was a rainy night we had a great night celebrating our stay at Cape May!
The food was delicious so were the drinks! Keep up the good work!

My husband and I really enjoyed our meal at the Mad Batter this past weekend. It was a beautiful night to eat outside. Greg was our server and he was excellent! We highly recommend the mussels for an appetizer. I enjoyed the vegan wellington and the rhubarb and strawberry crumble with vanilla ice cream was just outstanding.

Great ambience -- fun place!
Found this little gem based on a decent rating from Zagat. It's a great, casual spot full of light and life in an otherwise fairly low-key town. Service was attentive and very friendly. Food was decent but not outstanding. A particular standout was the tomato/pesto/mozzarella appetizer which was light yet decadent and spot-on. However, the tomato sauce on my fettucine was disappointingly bland. Everyone in my party seemed to enjoy their meals well enough, and I would definitely consider coming back.

Won't be our last. Nice local atmosphere for outdoor dining. Perfectly prepared fish. Attention to detail in food prep.

It was a last minute decision to add Mad Batter as one of our restaurants for dinner when visiting Cape May this year. We LOVE breakfast & have been happy with dinner in the past. Our meals were delicious & perfectly prepared. I enjoyed my Martini & my sister had a glass of wine (which was a little pricey...but worth it!) We can't say enough about the service. Our server (Greg) was wonderful! He was friendly, courteous, attentive & efficient. He gave us some suggestions based on his personal favorites & now one of them (the Mirin Marinated Chilean Sea Bass) is one of mine. Everything was perfectly paced from beginning to end. We look forward to returning for the Christmas season.

Wonderful dining experience
I have been going to Cape May for years and had never eaten at the Mad Batter until this weekend. What a perfect experience. The food was excellent, the indoor sunroom is lovely, service was great and there are numerous healthy choices on the menu to choose from. I will definitely go back!

Some restaurants with upscale, sophisticated offerings seem to suffer a compulsion to become pompous. The Mad Batter has the warmer feel of a family restaurant with high end dining and upscale service. We took our grandkids with us and they were welcomed and enjoyed the kids menu. Attentive, personable, top-notch waiter. Ordered the daily specials and each was superb. Made our last evening a in Cape May quite special.

When in Cape May, NJ don't
When in Cape May, NJ don't miss the Mad Batter. You can dine on their porch, inside, at the bar or their sun room. We prefer the porch. The servers are wonderful, friendly and accommodating. They serve breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinners and have light dining to full meals. Something for everyone. They have an extensive wine list and are now offering tasting of wines and sparkling wines. We try to dine there once a week by ourselves or with family and friends.

A great place to dine in Cape May!
We dine at the Mad Batter frequently and have never been disappointed. The food is always good especially the special selections offered each night! The beer list also changes often with seasonal selections rotating in with the regular draft offerings. A great place to dine in any season but especially in the summer on the porch!

One of our favorites but disappoint
Mad Batter is one of our favorite places. For the first time ever, we were disappointed. I ordered a glass of wine and was shocked when they brought it to me. I thought they made a mistake so I asked our waiter if that was their usual size(I knew it wasn't). There were no more than three/four sips. He was apologetic but I asked to see the manager. She told me that was the usual size and that they had just gotten new wine glasses. That was it. Ridiculous! Not sure what more disappointing...the manager's customer service skills or the mini glass of wine. My husband and I dine here often. We will reconsider our other options next time. There are many wonderful restaurants with good food and a real glass of wine.

When in Cape May do not miss
When in Cape May do not miss out on the Mad Batter. The staff is great. The food is great! They serve breakfast, lunch, & dinner. You can eat on their porch which is lovely or inside.

A local told us this restaurant was overpriced, but we went anyway. Not so! There are so many unique dishes on the menu (vegetable Wellington!!!!) that its definitely worth a visit. Service was terrific and everything we ate was good.
7/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
I went with my fiance for a special dinner date. I loved the old building and sitting outside on the porch. The food was amazing and worth every penny. The server was awesome and truly knew the menu. It may not seem like much from the outside but give it a try!
8/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
This was not out first time here, however with each dinning experience we look forward to returning! Our dinners were wonderful and the service was outstanding.
8/5/2013 5:00:00 PM
Eclectic menu focused primarily on seafood with a twist. Grilled swordfish was a special served with black beans and mashed sweet potatoes topped with creole butter. Delicious. We sat in the garden room which seems to accommodate families and was quite noisy. Our server carol was great, very friendly.
8/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
The staff could have been
The staff could have been more welcoming and greeted you with a hello and a smile...Also our waitress did not greet us or give us her name. Our meal was very good and we would go back .

Large group with dinner reservation
Didn't know what to expect since a lot of online reviews are for brunch at this restaurant. Our group had a dinner reservation and was seated immediately. The food was great and the service was very friendly (especially compared to the rude servers we encountered elsewhere in cape may during our trip).
8/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
My husband and I went here on our vacation and thought it was a cute little nook of a place to eat. Unfortunately the next morning we woke up feeling a bit under the weather. We're guessing that the cook or our waitress gave us a little something. My husbands sea bass was delicious. I ordered the gluten free Tuscan pasta and was disappointed to see how very little veggies were in it. It was basically just a huge bowl of pasta. I would have liked more veggies. Sauce was good though as so was the bottle of wine.

Mad Batter is in the heart
Mad Batter is in the heart of Cape May and part of a wonderful B&B. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner and are extremely accommodating. Their porch area is very comfortable and an enjoyable dining area even if the weather isn't perfect. They have clear panels and heaters when needed. They offer from light fare, such as salads, rustic pizzas to wonderful entrees such as Chilean Sea Bass. They have something for everyone and should not be missed when in Cape May.
8/15/2013 5:00:00 PM
We love this place, when every we are in Cape May we always stop in for dinner. They have great food, we like sitting outside. We always walk away full.

Great dinner experience.
I recommend making a reservation. My partner and I enjoyed the entire dining experience. Our waiter was thoughtful and the food was fabulous.
8/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
great casual dining
With all of the "overdone" restaurants in Cape May, it was great to find a simple place with simple and delicious food. We went for the lighter options. Burgers and Crab Cakes. Our server, Dennis, made the meal even more fun!
8/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
We enjoyed our experience,
We enjoyed our experience, we were seated right away, we requested to be seated on the porch, which they were able to do. The food was tasty. The service was friendly and efficient. The atomphere was relaxing. The noise was a pleasant buzz of laughter and conversation.
The only thing was I felt it was a little pricey. For 2 people with no liquor we paid $82.00.
8/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
The portions are big, food good and the set up calls for conversation between patrons.

Never Had A Bad Meal
.Meal was great , service was great. I would not bring my children. As prices to high , but they do not mind kids.

Love this place!
We again had a wonderful seafood dinner for our wedding anniversary on the front porch. This was our third year, and hope to be there a fourth!

Dinner on the porch....
The ambiance of gentle sea breezes, flower -filled surroundings, and the nearby passage of quaint, horse drawn carriages, only enhance the fine quality food served by this restaurant in it's 19th century mansion. The location is elegant and the food matches that elegance. I had a vegetarian mix in a puff pastry as an entre. My choice was a delicious balance of crumbly puff pastry and soft eggplant, spinach, broccoli, onions. My wife had the Crab cake entre and she was very happy with it. The warmed peasant bread served was exceptional as was the very tasty extra virgin olive oil supplied for dipping. Overall, a great dining experience for us and we will surely be back.

Wonderful gem in Cpae May...
This is outdoor porch dining...it was muggy and the bugs were biting. But they did have bug spray which helped alot. Also, parking is really tough on a Saturday night. We had a wonderful time but I wish I had known it was outdoors (no AC).
10/4/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food was great. Waitress was attentive and courteous.
10/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
Gluten free and yummy food
The menu was great for gluten sensitive people. I was able to enjoy a gluten free pizza that was very good. My husband had the duck entree, and my friend had a gluten free burger. We were all pleased with our food. The drink list was also very good. Our server was pleasant and friendly and gave us very good service. We will return next time to try breakfast, since that seems to be what this restaurant is known for. We enjoyed our experience here.

When in Cape May, NJ do not
When in Cape May, NJ do not miss the Mad Batter. The staff, the service and the food is great and they treat us like family (and it is family operated which is an added benefit). Whether you are in the mood for breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner or a light snack, they have it for you. The restaurant is very comfortable with indoor, outdoor and garden room dining and a large bar area. They also feature works of local artists. And, an added benefit is that they can accommodate your stay so you never have to leave. When we are in Cape May, NJ we never miss eating at Mad Batter. It is our favorite.

A Cape May gem!
Everything was fabulous -- the service was lovely, the drinks were great (try the Parisian martini -- not too sweet and not too "not-sweet"!), the shrimp and crab bisque soup was THE best I've ever tasted (good thing my husband ordered his own, cuz sharing with him could have been a problem...) The crabcakes were excellent! I hope to return sometime SOON!.

Good Food but a bit overpriced
I enjoy the Mad Batter more for breakfast, which is great there, than for dinner. I find dinner prices high and the dishes not as creative as other restaurants in Cape May. Unfortunately for the restaurant, the competition is fierce, so you really need to be on top of your game.

Go for dinner. Get the crumble.
The Mad Batter is known for breakfast, but they have great dinner selections as well. We enjoyed the cozy atmosphere and the live guitar music coming from the bar area. Service from our server Kelly was excellent. My husband and I both ordered the skirt steak special, served with asparagus, mashed potatoes and topped with crispy onions. The skirt steak was prepared perfectly medium, and was given a nice salty richness from the sprinkling of melty asiago cheese on top. Dessert was the blueberry crumble, which was the real highlight of the meal. All the desserts looked good, but I'm so glad we chose the crumble! Served warm and topped with ice cream, each bite was a fun mix of hot and cold. Really stellar. Go for dinner. Get the crumble!
