Food was excellent and so
Food was excellent and so is the service. The bone marrow was exquisite so are the frog legs. The bench seating against the wall was slightly cramped and uncomfortable as the wall was very straight and kind of hard o our backs.

Good Food Well Served
This is another superb Portland restaurant- courteous service, interesting and very tasty food at reasonable prices.

I really enjoyed my meal here;
I really enjoyed my meal here; our servers were fun, the decorations were very interesting, and the food itself was high-end bistro-style fare. The mussels I had were copious and perfectly done, the appetizer was delicious and unique, and the dessert ( a bowl of madeleines ) was whimsical and easy to share. But the thing that will have me really coming back is the cocktails, which were dangerously delicious!

Over the top food experience
A dinner I will not soon forget. Already planning to go back.

Portland dining month must!!
This was our first trip to St. Jacks and we will absolutely be returning soon. Their 3 course menu for Portland dining month was perfection. I'm not a total foodie and rarely write reviews but I know good food this experience was exceptional. We also were a group of 5 people who were seeing each other for the first time in a year so I know we were a little loud and not as focused as their average guest but I really appreciated that the staff didn't give us any attitude and gave us all the time we needed for conversation- so many restaurants will interrupt conversations at the worst times but at St. Jacks, the staff is polite and understands that dining out can be a social event as much as it is culinary. Thanks for a great night!

Delightful neighborhood gem with amazing food, attentive but unobtrusive service and nice atmosphere.
Cocktails were excellent, charcuterie delicious. Actually, exquisite. But then, I am new to such sophisticated food.
Frites the best I've eaten, onglet steak wonderful with bearnaise. I mean, who does bearnaise anymore? I could have had
a gallon of it. Madeleines fresh and fragrant, so, that's what Proust was talking about....
And the wine list! Totally awesome. Really memorable meal.
6/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
We went in for Portland Dinung month and ended up with the beat steak tartar I've had and two gorgeous salads (the butter lettuce was my favorite.) The lamb was hearty and tender, the cod had the best crispy skin, the chicken was moist and flavorful and the polenta so creamy. We needed 4 desserts of course and each was divine. None were too sweet or too big (American food traits gone overboard) and they were perfect for sharing. Stephan's wine selections were perfect each time. Sometimes it got a bit loud for conversation but my friends and I left full and satisfied and enamored.

Superb food, attentive service, lovely setting in a 19th-century house. (We thought their selections for the cheese course were quite nice.). The evening we were there was very challenging for the wait staff, as it had been a very hot day (unusually so for Pdx), and lacking central AC, the staff was gamely positioning extra fans to cool the room down. This, unfortunately, meant there was a lot of noise from big fans, but it was still a very enjoyable experience. We will definitely go back.l

Paris in Portland
This was our first time dining at St.Jack. The food, service and ambiance were superb. And It had a great feel - like you were in a bistro in Paris but still very Portland (the best of both worlds).
Go, just, go. You won't be sorry.
6/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
Always solid never disapppoints
Return trip to St Jack was very good. Arrived early and they accommodated our party of 4. Had a wide variety of French classics. Engaging wait staff who were great. Drinks. Appetizers. Good wine. Sampled all 3 salads. Steak frites and the oyster special all very well done. We will be back.

Great night out
My hubby & I wanted to try a new restaurant in Portland, so we went to St. Jacks. We are so glad we did! Everything was amazing from our food to the service of all staff members. We will definitely return.

It's spelled Bistrot with 2 T's
I expected top-quality food, French style. I expected fun and imaginative libations that I couldn't necessarily find elsewhere. I also expected a certain level of hoitey-toitey from the staff and expected to be treated a little bit like a peasant. I got everything I expected, and more.
Gentleman reconfirming my reservation called too early (8am!) on a Saturday and sounded neither happy nor gracious to confirm my reservation. Upon arrival later that night, servers pushing past the door to the outdoor tables gave me nary a look or smile. Even the host had a thing or two to say while seating us in a busy doorway (I was bumped in the head 4 times during my meal, no one apologized.)
Food excellent. Service, got better as it got later.
7/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Tasty French Bistro
The coquilles St Jack were amazing. Our waiter knew a lot about the wine, which was different, and nice. Otherwise service was good, but we were left without water for a time.

Consistently excellent food
We've dined at St. Jack many times and it's always wonderful. A fresh and appealing menu and much care taken with the food. We've been there for lunch and watched as staffers examined, washed and dried each leaf of lettuce. Though it may seem over-the-top, when you eat your little gem salad later that night, each bite will be perfect--you will never get a soggy piece of lettuce or one that's turning brown. The other night I ate the crawfish gnocchi. The flavors were fantastic. The gnocchi was a bit soft for my taste but it was all delicious and I scooped up every bite of the sauce. We shared dessert we thought was okay cake wise, but outstanding ice cream wise, with a sharp, fragrant apricot ice cram that made us happy to be alive.

High Expectations Fulfilled
We had several people give us top recommendations for St. Jack, so we had very high expectations. They did a great job and met those expectations. My wife started with the tomato soup in a puff pastry, which was beautiful and tasty. I had the special salad with smelt. My wife ordered the vegetable crepes and I had the sole in a caper sauce, which was delicious. We finished with a selection of ice cream.

best dining experience!
This was one of, if not THE best dining experience in a very long time! The quality, presentation and flavor of the food is truly amazing! Service was spot-on, along with an excellent wine list and killer cocktails. A must try!
8/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
Service outstanding. Food wonderful
Wonderfully attentive, subtle, personable, and effective service. Excellent beet salad; wonderful foie gras; perfectly prepared bavette. The madeleines are superb. Charming ambiance--both vivacious and curiously calm.
8/15/2013 5:00:00 PM
Not only fantastic food (even by Portland's standards), the service here is also good (not as common in Portland). And the corner location couldn't be any better.
8/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
We were there for desserts on a Saturday night, service was slow even though there were empty tables. The noise level was very high, mostly from the bar counter?, we had to almost yell to talk to someone across from the table. Desserts were great including their signature madeleine.
8/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
Had a terrific first visit to St. Jack. Superb food, excellent service, charming ambiance. Some of these online reviewers have got to get real. My spouse and I thought this place was simply wonderful!
8/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
My boyfriend and I decided to try St Jack for our anniversary. At first I was worried it would feel too casual and noisy, but we were sat at a quiet table near the bar. The service was outstanding- our waiter was very friendly and attentive. He kept our wine glasses full and checked on us often without being obnoxious. The food at St Jack was the most notable part- as it should be! We shared the oyster special and a cheese plate. He had the salmon and I had the braised lamb. Both were outstanding and we kept stealing bites from each other's plates. I would absolutely come back here!
8/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food for foodies
Really enjoyed the good location (inner SE Portland), The staff were very helpful and patient with our questions. Drinks were the best I have had in awhile in PDX. Food orders in between courses was a little slow. So best to go with talkative friends. I would try this restaurant again.
9/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
Another reason to dine in SE PDX
Off the beaten path, St. Jack's is a good option if you are tired of the same restaurants in the Pearl district. The food was good, the service was reasonably fast and the prices were fair. Easy to park, easy to make last minute reservations. The menu is compact and features French-inspired cuisine - the halibut special I had was really good.
9/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
This was my second time dining at St. Jack and the service & food were just as exceptional as the first time. We were seated in the front room which has amazing atmosphere - small, cozy, very cool vibe. I love the bar in the front room! Everything from start to finish was great. Our waiter was friendly and knowledgeable - he made a great white wine selection for me. It's fun to get things to share so you can try more of the menu. I strongly recommend the Coquille St. Jack! I will be back soon.
9/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
You'll need to be well versed on the menu - as it's completely unreadable in the restaurant. Very dim lighting, and the smallest possible font! Food was amazing. I'd go back in a heartbeat for the lamb confit!
9/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food is wonderful but pretty loud
Wonderful French cuisine. Good service. Gnocchi with crayfish was divine. But noise level pretty high. All of that would have been remedied if we could have sat at outdoor tables but we were in the middle of a Portland monsoon. Would still happily return however.
9/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
Vive la France
We chose Saint Jack for a birthday dinner because we love France, and it had good reviews.
The ambience is definitely French bistro, but a little noisy. The service was friendly and attentive.
The food was excellent. The menu is small but interesting.
The wine list by the glass was good if a little spendy, but the carafe option is great.
We will definitely return to enjoy Saint Jack again.
9/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
This is my second time to visit St. Jacks. Very reliable authentic French cuisine. Excellent value! I will go back.

Some Enchanted Evening
Love the ambience of this place. Very close to being in a Parisian bistro. Service is pretty good. The salads are outstanding. Our party of 4 had the beet salads and the butter lettuce salads - I want to jump into a vat of the dressing served on the latter. Wow, great stuff. Main courses ranged from knock-your-socks-off to okay (the gnocchi with oxtail) but overall I would characterize the food as excellent. The lamb literally melts in your mouth. Great place and stays on our Favorites list.

Awesome Little French Gem
St Jack is an excellent restaurant - especially if you like French food and a great chef's personal take on classics. I have been there twice and I will keep coming back. It's cozy, inviting, charming and has a great wine list and menu. The servers are very knowledgeable and attentive. I would recommend St Jack to any and all, and...if you're a fan (or even if you're not) of oxtail dishes, you HAVE to try that first!
10/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
Loved the food, quality and variety. I'm a foodie and am hard to impress: I was impressed. Entire family enjoyed everything we ate. Good job!
10/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
We took our niece here for her 16 birthday. We wanted to take her somewhere special and couldn't decide on where to go. I picked up the latest issue of Food and Wine and saw an article about St. Jack and was sold. It was a wonderful choice. Between the food and the ambience it felt like a little piece of France right in Oregon. I will most definitely return.
10/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
EVERYTHING was scrumptious, with complex flavors. The blackstrap molasses ice cream was arguably THE best ice cream I've ever tasted. Lovely, lovely experience, and very reasonably priced for the quality!
10/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
St Jack is great!
We tried St Jack based on a review in Food & Wine magazine. Everything we had was delicious - seasoned perfectly with great presentation.
If we lived in Porland it would be a place we'd frequent often. Looking forward to a return visit!
10/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
Our foursome had a wonderful evening. Pickled mackerel and vegetables was a great starter on an autumn evening. Two of us had a couple appetizers for dinner and two had entrees. All was excellent. Tomato soup in puff pastry and roasted beet salad got raves. the mushroom tart was spot on and the onglet steak was a hit. Try one of the house sodas, and leave room to share a dessert.
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
Wonderful little place
Everything was exceptional. The only thing that bothered my was I expected more attentive service. This is by no means saying the service was bad. I have worked in 5 star restaurants so I notice every little thing. This was a minor thing to a lovely evening.
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
A delightful spot
St Jack has again and again done the impossible. Every time I try escargot there it is wonderfully prepared. With ham, butter, and garlic. I used to hate it. The lamb was perfect and the mushroom tart blew me away. If you have not gone to St. Jack make a reservation now!
10/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
Delicious but a little bit rude
The food was top notch and for most of the night the server was very helpful. But after I had paid my date and I were still chatting for a bit. At this point the waiter began to make it slightly obvious that he would like us to leave. All the courtesy and professionalism that was there before the check came had vanished. I am sure this was probably just a reflection of this waiter and not the restaurant but it is what sticks in my mind the most. It was a poor way to end a very pleasant evening and a erased all my enjoyable thoughts of the food and drinks.

A bit of France in SE Portland
Terrific food and service was even better! The steak frites was fabulous, as was the mushroom tart. Pear sorbet was heavenly and the chocolate ice cream was the best I gave had. Ever.
10/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
We loved it!
It was our anniversary & we wanted to try a place we haven't been. The service was fantastic. I ordered a Manhattan but I didn't like it. I set it aside & drank some wine. A server picked it up & told our waitress I didn't care for it. She came right over & apologized & told me there would be no charge! The food was excellent and we had a great bottle of wine & St. Jack is now on our favorite places to eat in Pdx
11/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
What amazingly great food!
What amazingly great food! I was so excited to find oxtails on the menu, and they were absolutely wonderful. So very rich and delicious. Our waiter was also wonderful, and the wine he recommended went beautifully. The cheese plate is always to die for. The desserts weren't to my liking on this visit, but they have been in the past.

I truly enjoyed my dining
I truly enjoyed my dining experience at St. Jack. I had had lunch here several weeks prior which was my first introduction to St. Jack. On that day, I had a most delicious tomato bisque with possibly the best grilled cheese sandwich I have ever tasted. I decided to bring my boyfriend to dinner a few weeks later. We did not have to wait for our table and it was fine for the two of us. I would have rather had a table in the corner, but, I still felt it was very romantic. Our waiter, Matthew, was very nice and incredibly knowledgeable. He directed in both our food and our wine selections and was spot on with his description. All the food was excellent.

Pretty good food but for the
Pretty good food but for the prices, was expecting excellent food. Very dim lighting which makes reading the menus difficult.

Excellent French bistro food
We had just returned from 2weeks in Paris, so French food was appealing. St.jack did not disappoint. The food was simple, well-prepared bistro food. I had muscles, while my husband had steak Frits.for appetizers, he has tomato soup en crout (yum) and I had pork rind with a maple syrup dip, also very good. We will be going back.
11/16/2013 4:00:00 PM
Another great birthday dinner!
We came back to St. Jacks to celebrate a a birthday once again. The meal was fabulous, the service outstanding (attentive but not interruptive) and the suggested wine was a perfect pairing for the pork special and steak/frites. St. Jacks calls itself a French bistro and indeed it is. It is one of our favorite places in Portland and a must stop for anyone looking for a small but creative menu and an awesome wine list.

A night to remember
We couldn't have asked for a better setting to celebrate our 25th anniversary. The food was fantastic, from the appetizer to the entree'. The city of Portland has yet to disappoint me with its many epicurean gem, and this is just another.
11/25/2013 4:00:00 PM
Great dining experience
Went to St Jack Sunday night to celebrate my birthday. It was my first time there. What a nice, cozy space. The service was perfect. I ordered a cocktail , cherry ginger crush. One of the best cocktails I have ever had! My husband and I both ordered the braised lamb shoulder. It was so tender, flavorful. Served with fall vegetables. Real comfort food, but with quality and finesse.
I will be returning !
