Cozy and tasty
We had a wonderful lunch in this cozy restaurant. The service and the food were impeccable. Very cozy, with a strong Russian presence. The only thing that I noticed is the fact that they don't have a menu in Russian, which is a little unusual.

This is not a romantic hideaway.
This is not a romantic hideaway. Loud and boisterous, Russian music (live), a table of what looked liked Russian oligarchs with the most amazing women rubles could buy, and surprisingly good food. We'll go back.

Excellent traditional dishes
Excellent traditional dishes prepared very well. If looking for something different than your typical restaurant fare, try Russian Samovar and you will not be disappointed. We have visited for dinner after a matinee twice in the last few months and enjoyed it both times. Nice people and great atmosphere.

Finally Found Russian food
Finally found a Russian restaurant, but had to to the NYC. I'm from CA and they are few and far between. The food was good. I was looking for a Stroganoff. I've been to the place it was created in St. Petersburg. (At least, that's what the tour guide said) My wife had Chicken Kiev. Both very good. Good food, fair service and good conversation with the waiter who is from Russia. Close to several theaters, which helped guide our choice. Bar was very busy. I would go again.

Not only was the food excellent
Not only was the food excellent but they had a piano player with several different singers. Music included songs from the Beatles, Western, Russian, etc. What a great find very close to the Hilton mid-town. We held a business meeting and then sang along with the music. Would definately recommend it and look forward to going there again when next visiting NYC.

A pleasant surprise
Walking down from the street, you enter a long, dark cavern of a space, with the bar, immediately on your right, lined with Russian-speaking patrons. Beyond the bar is a low, narrow room of tables and chairs, with the walls covered in a jumble of art of all types, styles, and qualities. There are also sketches and doodles scattered throughout the menu, which features many classic Russian dishes, as well as a large variety of vodkas, including their featured infusion of the day. Simply put, the food was great. We started with a charcuterie platter, which had a wonderful selection of meats. My wife had the beef stroganoff, which she enjoyed a lot, and I had the rabbit special -- it turned out to be the best rabbit I have ever had.

Good Russian restaurant
We have a favorite Russian restaurant (no frills) in NE Philadelphia and wanted to try Samovar after reading reviews here and on Yelp. It was only 5:30 when we arrived, so that may explain the loose ambience. But the service was efficient if not overly friendly. The food was excellent - we had vareniki, borscht, chicken Kiev and beef stroganoff. All were tasty, although the chicken was served lukewarm. For dessert, the Napoleon, which was obviously homemade, delicious and huge. My wife had the rum balls (actually a log). which my wife also liked. The prices were over two times as expensive as our regular place, but that's NYC. Finally, a piano player started playing near the end of our dinner and he was very good, better than most.

Good food with a nice decor
The restaurant was small with attentive staff. The food was good and authentic (the chicken kiev tasted like the chicken kiev I got in Moscow). The pelemeni was wonderful. The dolma was good but, we did not care for grape leaves - the meat and rice in the middle was moist and tasty. My daughter got the duck and loved it (unfortunately, she will probably want me to cook duck).

Great food, but a little to noisy! The food is always consistently good.

The vodka infusions were superb! The meal was good, smaller portions than expected but tasted delicious, cooked perfectly. I was going to the theater next door, so it was a great location for the 50's.

RUSSIA IN NEW YORK
I was pleasantly surprised at ho delicious the food was. The portions were very large, enough to share an appetize, main course and dessert. A definite find.

Loved the infused vodka. The food was very good, but we had to ask 3-4 times for napkins. And at least that many times for water.

My husband grew up in Russia and was savoring every morsel of the home-style food. A great place to go for a pre-theater bite.

Food was fantastic. Best stroganoff ever. The eggplant appetizer was richly flavored and a generous portion. Infused vodka selection great fun.

Good older restaurant
Very educational for those not familiar with Ukrainian food. Restaurant decor is dated but staff is friendly. Beef stroganoff was wonderful.

Imaginative vodka infusions, Russian speciality dishes, , live piano and a guest opera vocalist in a sweatshirt created a magical evening.
