BEST NIGHT IN MONTREAL
We did a few great restaurants while we were there but this was unanimously the favourite. Food is to die for, service was great. Highly recommend it!

This is a nice restaurant in Montreal for a visitor / newcomer that wants to taste local food, kindly served but not aesthetically overloaded or over-elaborated. The menu offers a variety of dishes carefully choosen within canadian products such as bison, deer or salmon.
It was a bit noisy when I went there but it may depend on the diners.
The wine list could be reacher but includes a bit of everything.
I really recommend the restaurant.

I was in Laval for business and had the munchies for venison. I did a web search for "venison near Laval" and found this place. The food was fantastic. The waitress was very pleasant and the place is located in a nice street in Montreal for an after dinner walk. I went there at 10pm on a Thursday and have nothing but compliments for the food and the service. Business traveler, go there, have a brew from the local brewery, have the venison, and enjoy.

Menu is limited but what is on the menu is very interesting.
Side dishes are excellent.
Waitress was indifferent.

A great find
We wanted a nice dinner out, what we got was a great dining experience in a relaxed atmosphere. The rustic decor fits well with old Montreal setting. Service was spot on, the venison chop with quinoa was amazing. Fresh oyster app was delicious. The calamari pasta was superb just a hint of fennel and a wonderful blend of flavours. We will definitely be back to try the other interesting items on the menu. The deconstructed whiskey cake topped it all off wonderfully.

The place described itself as being 'Canadian' food. Not sure what that meant, so we decided ti find out. Found out. Wild game and off the beaten path meats. One guy in the party was reluctant, as he is not adventurous when it comes to trying things. He could not have been happier. Neither could the rest of us.

One of the Best!
My girlfriend and I went to L' Orignal for our anniversary. Before I even mention the food, I have to give props to the waitress that served us. She was very knowledgeable and all smiles. BEST SERVICE EVER! They have a great selection of wines and cocktails. to fit anyones tastes. As for the food, words cannot describe how amazing it was. We actually started crying when we took a bite from the smoked duck. As foodies, we shared every dish we got. Every single item on the dish was to die for... even the red quinoa that came with the main dish was incredible. This is simply the best dining experience I ever had!

More than enjoyable
This restaurant offers both great food and great service. It has a notable selection of oysters. And you have to taste the desserts!
We also enjoyed the music, quite eclectic, and the relaxed ambience, although a bit noisy.

The specialty of this resto is game. Excellent food. Good wine list and very nicely laid out (by taste rather than country of origin). Great attentive service.

Four of us ate at L'Orignal on Friday--a slightly delayed birthday dinner. Everything was terrific. starting with well made cocktails and including excellent food, nice buzz, and attentive service. We had between us raw oysters (a tad pricey, but well served), boar shoulder, halibut (hold the poivrons, cheerfully done), bison tartare, and rabbit done four ways. We split a white Bordeaux and a s'more for dessert. The place carries off the Canadian conceit without effort. The only slight problem came just as we were finishing: a raucous bachelor party rolled in, and we fled, unable to hear ourselves think. Still and all, a great place; highest recommendation.

Absolutely superb venison chop! Far the best I have ever had, either in a restaurant or at home.

6/29/2013 4:00:00 PM
It was my second time at l'Orignal. We had NS oysters, bison tartare, and a beef flank special.
There is little to say about this place that hasn't been said already. It is a temple of savoury and umami.

cozy restaurant with excellent food
The restaurant is nice and cozy with very good atmosphere. The design is excellent and eye-catching. The tables are a bit closer to each other than could be expected for high end restaurant. The food was excellent, we really enjoyed it. The service was very good, up to the level of the restaurant. The only problem was the noise level - it was too loud. May be it was because our table was right under the speaker, but still we felt the level as excessive. However the overall impression was very positive.

L'orignal name says it all
WE LOVE L'orignal. We at there 2yrs ago when visiting Montreal and knew we HAD to go back next time we visited Montreal again. The first time there, my husband had wild boar. 1 of his favorite meals of all time. (we eat out in nyc weekly). He was disappointed they did not have the wild boar this time, however he had the deer special instead. Equally amazing. I had fish BOTH times we were there and both times- excellent. Everything we ate from appetizers to dessert was delicious and perfect. Their mixed drinks are very good as well.
Ambiance is very cool. Laid back, non pretentious. Wait staff is very pleasant and attractive (would never comment, but it was noticeable).
Whether you live or are visiting Montreal it is A MUST TRY.

L'Original punches above its weight
The starters and main courses me and my wife have had were extraordinary. I am slightly less enthusiastic about my dessert (I have only had one) but it was not worse than deserving a grade above the average.

I wrote a lengthy review on this restaurant on Urbanspoon, but to some it all up this was a great experience. Brought a girl here for the first date and it went extremely well. The food was delicious, some of the best fish I have ever had. The service was impeccable.

Best dining experience out vacation
The food was amazing and the service impeccable! The staff did everything to ensure that the evening was unforgettable. And then beyond food suggestions (which were dead on) spent time with our table suggesting things to see and do while we were visiting Montreal. Even so much as getting another staff member to come and answer questions and make additional suggestions. Everyone was extremely helpful, and very courteous! As well I probably had the best pork chop of my life! And the smoked duck appetizer was wonderful. An amazing place to find unique Canadian delicacies and specialty cocktails as well as find some familiar tastes if you're feeling less adventurous. Make sure to stop in while in town!

Before flying into Montreal, I had to make a reservation to one of my favourite restaurants in the city. Wild game can often be difficult to find in some cities, but L'Orignal did it right. My first time there I ordered the elk, the second time I went for the braised venison shank with barley risotto....both were sublime! Great energy without being overbearing, a warm atmosphere with a wooden ambience adds to the experience. Our server was very professional and brought over some complimentary drinks after the bill to say thanks. Overall, an excellent spot in old Montreal.
The only negative thing was that we booked and arrived in time but had to wait an extra 30 minutes for a table, so we sat at the bar with oysters and Caesars :)

This restaurant makes you
This restaurant makes you feel right at home the minute you walk in. Whether dining alone at the bar, having a cocktail with friends, or sitting at a table with your group, you will have a great experience. The music is noticeable but not loud and they play a great mix from the 70's, 80's, and 90's. The staff all seem to enjoy working together which just adds to the comfortable experience. Monica and her husband own the restaurant. She likes wine and is a good resource if you have questions and her husband did the decor for this moose themed restaurant.

I was looking for something slightly classier than the hottest "bistro du jour", hip but not stuffy, and met my expectations in that regard. Every dish we had was v. good to excellent, serving temp perfect, and the menu was sufficiently diverse. What stood out for me: (1) portion sizes were notably larger than the little dishes you sometimes get at foodie joints - you shouldn't leave here hungry (2) the wine menu was quite broad, and it was easy for me to locate a number of great wines (different grapes, regions) at "reasonable" price points. We liked the "buzz", but it was noisy for a mid-summer Thursday - if you hate noise it may be too loud on a Friday or Saturday. Highly recommended.

This is the best meal I have had since I moved to Montreal 4 years ago. My dining companion from Toronto said it was the best meal she could remember having had in a long time herself.
Incredibly original menu. Freshest ingredients prepared in inventive ways and combinations. A flavour revelation with every bite. What dining out should be. Gracious, warm service that you would expect if you were a regular, even though it was our first time there.

Had a great time on a "Industry Monday" where numerous specials were available. After some great oysters, I went for the pork loin schnitzel with German style mashed potatoes, it was huge and delicious! Can't wait to visit again.
8/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
I really enjoyed the food and my service was attentive. The place is very clean with a causal elegance to it. I enjoyed every bite of the Green Salad, Black Cod, and Special German Cake. Good experience!

Fabulous spot for Sunday dinner
I'm in town for business with colleagues and we had a wonderful Sunday night dinner at L'Orignal. The menu was so eclectic that the only issue was trying to decide which entree to go with. The green salad was super fresh and flavorful, two of us ordered the elk and lobster "surf and turf" which was phenomenal and our other colleague ordered the braised venison, which he loved.
The vibe was relaxing but the music really fun and enjoyed by everyone. We almost cancelled because the attire on a few reviews described it as "dressy" and we were a little tired from traveling to get dressed up. Turns out, at least on a Sunday night, "smart casual" is probably more accurate. We could have blended fine in nice jeans and jackets. Great place!

Great Creative Cuisine
Visited Montreal for the weekend and wouldn't miss my favorite restaurant there. Had a delicious duck breast appetizer that had the essence of pastrami seasoning and a nicely prepared venison shank for my entree. What also makes the experience special is the warm room and great staff. It's a completely inviting place.

Smoked Duck was awsome!
I enjoy eating in fun trendy gems in any city... Well Montreal has something to say thanks for with this place!
The service was good, our waitress was very pleasant, maybe not the most versed in terms of wine, but she made up for it in her kind way!
- the food was one fantastic bite after another! The decomposed desserts were just as great at the main courses. My only complaint is that food service is no where near "quick", but it's well worth the wait!

Don't surprise me
We are a foodie family and we review the menu ahead of time since we have an 8 and a 10 year old. While they have adventurous palates, its good to know there will be something for everyone. The menus that are posted in the restaurant app (their own app) lists rabbit and brussel sprouts and leg of boar. The menu at the restaurant did not have any of these items listed. So that was disappointing. It turned out well anyway but they need to make sure the menu they post is accurate. They are one of the only restaurants open on a Monday night in Montreal. Great for people who like something different.

Tucked away in an alley - this energetic, quaint restaurant provided for a great evening filled w curiously, delicious food, friendly service and an energetic vibe - great music!! You will not be disappointed!!!

The food was absolutely delicious. Although the portions appeared small at a first glance, they were definitely very filling. Overall, I had a great time and I enjoyed both the food and the wine.

Toujours aussi surprenant
Quand nous sommes arrivés j'étais un peu déçu du changement de menu, mais après avoir choisi nos entré et plat principal, je peut vous dire que nous étions tous incroyablement ravi de tout nos choix.
9/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
We were seated timely and met by polite waitstaff. Perfectly prepared dishes and ample portions as well.
We traveled to Montreal for a few days and this is a place I would visit again when we return.

If you like your meats...
Great food, especially the meats. We had the chicken and the boar. I was sceptical about ordering chicken in a restaurant since its usually nothing special, but it was the most tender pollo I ever tasted in my life. The boar (sanglier) was also tasty and different.. Overall, great food experience!
10/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
We are regulars at L'Orignal - food is amazing, service is great.
10/26/2013 12:00:00 AM

Food service ambience all
Food service ambience all great.
Had rabbit, wildboar and bison tartare.
All were a little off the wall and weregreat foodexperiences.
A little on th expnsive side - but then you get what you pay for.
Wines in particular were more expensive then at other restarurants intherea.

Great ambience - walked in to a foyer smelling of deep forest pine, and inside we were cocooned in the atmosphere of a trendy but cozy stone cottage (with a bar!) Loved it. Extraordinarily friendly waiter, chummy+accommodating. Dining companion loved the quail starter and juicy pan-seared trout. Seafood plate (oysters, clams, shrimp and 1/2 lobster) good but pricey at $75. Delighted with oysters and perfectly cooked everything. Dessert was supremely cheesy goat cheese-cheesecake and amazing deconstructed s'more with a bar of intense dark chocolate (with no bitter aftertaste), hazelnuts, graham cracker and homemade toasted marshmallow. YUM - perfect dinner for a cold night. Service was a bit slow, place was a bit noisy, would still go back.
