Great food, comfortable environment, friendly service, great prices. Overall a very good experience, perfect for dining before attending a show at the state theater perhaps.

Great Latin food
Don't be put off by the exterior. This is a darling little eatery. I enjoyed the attentive service and wonderful food. The corn salad and steak was so wonderfully fresh and good!

School Group Visit
I took a small group of Spanish I students there for lunch. Excellent experience for them. Great food! They loved it. Difficult to get pricing ahead of time. Can be pricey depending upon what is ordered. We would all go back again. Watch out for 9% tax.

Taste of Venezuela in Falls Church
Wanted to try this for quite a while and finally got a group of friends together on a Thursday evening. Definitely made a reservation based on Yelp reviews and knowing the size of the place - probably seats 12 inside and maybe 20 outside. It was a great spring evening so we grabbed a table outside. While the beer selection is limited, it is good and beers not usually found in a typical bar or brewery setting. They also have good Latin drinks like mojitos, etc. We all just stuck with dinner, but read through all the arrepes choices and will definitely be back for those. Some salads looked good too, but we all went for the Venezuelan national dish with varying changes (with fried egg, with beans, etc). Will be back to try more on the menu.

Food is outstanding--fresh, high-quality ingredients, well prepared dishes. A delight every time. The place is tiny (reservations recommended!), and the unassuming decor, friendly service and Latin music combine to leave you feeling a world away.

Spotted on Food Network
After living in the area and driving past this restaurant for 4 years, I saw it pop up on Food Network, and knew it was time to go see. The mangorita was serious business, the mechada (pulled beef) arepa was awesome, as was the peanut soup. also, the cuatro leches cake? AMAZING. SERIOUSLY. If you get anything, at least try it. Yucca was quite tasty too! Great place, reasonable prices. Get a reservation, it's a tiny joint and fills up quick.

As seen on DDD
The food is spiced to perfection. The black bean soup is delish and the drinks are out of this world. Not recommended for large groups. Perfect spot for a fun date night dinner.

Food was excellent, service friendly and knowledgable.

As usual, the food was delicious and service was wonderful. Only downside was that they were out of saltenas.

Fantastic Latin American cuisine! The menu is limited but what they have on it is delicious! Especially loved the Arrepas stuffed with avocado and chicken!!! The pulled beef with white cheese was out of this world tender and succulent to no end :-)

great food not so great service
The food is really delicious, flavorful, and fresh tasting. The waiters (unless the lady is waiting on you) will take your order and its hard pressed to see them again. There was one bus boy who tried to be helpful but seemed new. The food does arrive quickly and add I said before its tasty. If they improved the waiters attentiveness then this could be a higher rates review.

Worth putting up in the traffic jam
My husband found this restaurant when searching Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives to add to our vacation plans. The GPS stated a 15 minute drive, but due to the traffic it took over double the time. We got to the restaurant wondering if this was worth the hassle. We shortly found out it was worth the wait! In fact, we ordered several dishes to share as a family, but we ended up buying another bowl of soup and sandwich. We loved the uniqueness of the food. The only flaw was the sound of the traffic as this restaurant is on a busy street. Overall, this restaurant is a MUST TRY. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Three Steps To Heaven
An engaging eye-candy waitress comes to take my order, of which I ask for her recommendations as it was a rare occasion. She returns with the most beautifully grilled arepa, not too thick so that the cornmeal is crispy, and as if I had ordered myself it was loaded with shredded beef and creamy Venezuelan Gouda. It was heaven but heaven does not stop here. With little time to catch my breath she brings me another plate, this one full of shredded beef, fried plantains, and black beans and rice. I was in bliss. Every succulent bite of tried and true traditional Venezuelan cuisine would send shudders down my body. And as I clean my plate and wait for the check I realize, the question would not be if I came back, but when I came back.

Get here early to sit outside
It's a lovely spot for outdoor dining. Food is fresh and good - especially the Venezuelan national dish! Had a great dinner there!

Falls Church Restaurant Gem
Do not let the location in a very old motel on the main road through Falls Church keep you from experiencing this wonderful restaurant! The Latin American dishes are fabulous, and the prices are quite reasonable for this area. The wait staff is very friendly, but plan on a wait for your food because the kitchen isn't real speedy. However, the wait is worth it, as the food is delicious!
7/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
food very good as usual
We had platanos and arepas and shared a custard dessert. We had hoped to order peanut soup but were told after the order was placed that they hadn't made any. I love the food there and will certainly go back.
7/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
We saw it on Diners Drive-ins and Dives and had to try it. It was wonderful! The food was delicious. The wait staff was very attentive. Can't wait to go back. You must try the peanut soup! Out of this world. And the fried plantains - yummy.

Best food and service in the DC/NoVA area, no doubt about it! The Chef is world-class and takes great care to ensure the food is served hot and delicious. The staff is extremely friendly and everything on the menu is fantastic. I highly recommend La Caraquena.

Small but impressive
The food was quite good. Fresh ingredients prepared in a unique way. The quatro leches cake was to die for!

We'll be back
Wonderful food- we *all* had the sopa de mani (wow!), and various arepas (all excellent), and the cuatro leches cake (to die for). My spouse and I also had the plantains appetizer- the savory toppings (the green chili sauce was particularly good) on top of a sweet dish were really something special. The wait staff were very friendly and energetic, but I think they may need one more person during the rush- the wait times were a bit long. We made reservations, which is probably a good idea- it's a *tiny* place. We'll be back- there's still most of the menu to explore!

Great Anniversary Dinner
My husband and I went there recently for our anniversary dinner. We'd been meaning to try it for some time and we finally made reservations and got there. It was great! We had to wait a bit to sit down, even with a reservation, but we weren't in a rush, so it was fine. We sat outside and it was a good, moderate temp evening, so it was really nice and less loud than inside.
The food was great, too. We had the appetizer equivalent of cheese sticks, 2 arepas, and an entree that we split. That was definitely a lot of food for us, but we wanted to try everything. We could probably have either had appetizers and an arepa or 1 arepa and the entree to split. Also, the mango margarita was really good! We will definitely be back!
7/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
I have been here a number of times and every time the food is delicious. It's really simple fare and just tastes great. The atmosphere is ordinary and plain but they did have some great Latin music playing that had people tapping their feet. I had pulled beef with black beans - Yumm, oh, also, plantains - sweet. . For an appetizer we shared yucca that came with a spicy jalapeno sauce; the yucca was tender and tasty. The young lady that waited on our table was happy to meet our every request. The pricing is so reasonable that you just want to go again and again - best to make a reservation because it is a small place.

Amazing food, mediocre service. They lost our reservation and we sat for 20 minutes or so waiting for menus. Once we got our food it was delicious. So go prepared to wait for a bit, surprisingly it is worth it!!!

I found this place almost
I found this place almost two years ago (from DDD of course), and was so impressed the first time I came. I moved away, and talked about the place often, and how good the food was. I recently returned, and of course made sure to put in a reservation for my friends and I (a total of 5). The food here is phenomenal. A little pricey, but definitely worth it. Make sure you make a reservation, and plan on being there awhile because the service, while wonderfully friendly, is a little bit slower than most would like.

Delightful Latin Surprise!
First thing that hit us was EXCRUCIATINGLY loud music. They tuned it down a bit or we wouldn't have stayed. The waiter and waitress were delightful. I had the pulled beef with plantains and black beans with the egg atop. Absolutely delicious! The beans were smokey and the best I've ever had. Others had the steak or dinner salad & were equally pleased. The margarita was amazing and others said their mojitos were, as well. If the music had been lower I would give this little place an A but it was almost impossible to have a conversation with anyone who wasn't right next to you. If this were a bar scene I would understand the music. I will definitely go back and try it one more time & request lowering the volume if it's as loud.

I love this place, have been here several times. It's very small, my only complaint would be that it's a little warm and there is usually only 1 server, but I love this place and would definitely recommend it to everyone and will definitely be coming back! Love love love this place. :)

Our go-to spot when visiting DC
Great, little restaurant in Falls Church, VA. Food is delicious and reasonably priced. Service is always excellent.
10/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food was fabulous as always.
Food was fabulous as always. I had made a reservation for 5 but when I got there, they hadn't noted the time and hadn't really had a table appropriate for the group size. They took the next 15 minutes trying to figure out how they could accomodate our group. They ended up squeezing at a table meant for 3 and one person had to sit on the end and block another table from getting out of their booth.
The food did not come at the same time. At one point, food was delivered, only to be picked up off our table a minute later and was told it wasn't for us but another table. We watched them removed the food in front of us and deliver it across the restaurant.. ours did not come out for another 10 minutes.
Odd service..but food was fabulous!!

Diners Driveins and Dives was right
Heard about this place on the food network show, so glad we went!! Food was delicious! Little mom and pop place with good food which is exactly what we wanted! Will definitely come back, a neighborhood gem! Arepas....yes please!
10/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
Excellent Food & Atmosphere!
Second time at this place & better than the first! Plantains & Tequeñones are out of this world; arepas delicious, passion fruit drinks, delectable. On top of that they sing Happy Birthday to the patrons and the owner played the drums. Oh, did I say we danced too? Fun place! Will keep coming back for more!
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food and cocktails here were fantastic, wanted to come back the following night but without a reservation you basically have no chance of getting a table. Will definitely be returning but make reservations and make them for half hour before you want to sit bc ur going to have to wait with a cocktail anyway but it is worth it, the arepas are out of this world and the beef with beans and rice was amazing!
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food-decent service!
I love La Caraquena! Tucked away in a motel, it is a tiny gem of a restaurant with genuine, delicious food! The service is a little slow both times I've been there, and the servers seems to forget about some of the tables. However, as long as you have one of their delicious cocktails it's a fun place to sit back and relax--just don't come when you're in a hurry!
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
worth a visit!
had lunch there twice. both times were great. flavorful and interesting food. plan to try dinner sometime.

Loved the Venezuelan cuisine
Loved the Venezuelan cuisine here. It brought back wonderful memories of the time I lived in Caracas years ago. Especially the excellent Arepas on the menu, of which there was an even greater selection than I remember from when I was actually in Venezuela! Service was excellent too, and the whole experience was made very warm and friendly by the staff at the restaurant.
11/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
We've lived in the area for over 4 years, and La Caraquena has been on our list to try. We finally tried it this weekend, and my only regret is not finding it sooner! Based on some reviews that we read, I was tempted to just order a bunch of arepas for our dinner, however, we wanted to give the place a fair chance, so we got two arepas, two entrees, a side of fried yuca, and the quatros leches cake. Everything was amaaaazing, though the arepas (and the awesome chili sauce!) did beat out the rest of the meal by a bit. We can't wait to go back!
Please note that seating is very limited, so reservations are highly recommended. Also, parking is available in any of the motel spots.
11/15/2013 4:00:00 PM
I will look for them again next time I am in DC. The food was excellent from the plantain appetizer to to the three milk sponge cake. The facilities were clean and friendly. The restaurant was doing a great business and I was glad that I had taken the last reviewers advice and called ahead for reservations.
11/22/2013 4:00:00 PM
Excellent food, worth the wait
If you make reservations, prepare to wait. And there is no place to wait except in front of the door or outside (brrrr). Once you are seated 1/2 hour late, prepare to be amazed by the excellent food. Try the corn salad. yummm. The beef dishes are all excellent and the shrimp diablo dish is also excllent.
But leave room for the quattro leches dessert. Incredible.
As I said, worth the wait.

Don't be fooled by the building
Don't be fooled by the building (in front of a lower end motel), the food is authentic and very good, and the service was amiable and timely. A pleasant surprise.
