Beautiful, fresh and delicious food
Everything we ordered was truly delicious. It was as though you could almost taste each individual ingredient....especially with the cucumber and pea soup and the incredible salad with watermelon. The decor is lovely and the noise level was not intrusive. I can't wait to go back!

This place WS great. The food was lovely and unique. I had their Russian mule and highly recommend it. If you go for a romantic date ask to be seated away from the bar where it is quieter.

Tasty but LOUD
Very good food (though small portions on both fish dishes ordered). The big hit was the steak (though fries arrived cold and limp) and the side dish of brussel sprouts which were really excellent. Pass on the chocolate mousse dessert-a disappointment. Try not to be seated near the bar area on the left when you enter from Lex Ave. Even before it filled up, the music was blasting.

Breakfast never disappoints
If you want more than just eggs and bacon but aren't looking for a full scale brunch, this is my go-to place in midtown. I've lost track how many times I've been here but I'm never disappointed. The menu is limited but excellent. The service is typically friendly and not rushed. The whole thing just has an upscale-breakfast vibe for the early morning foodie without the excess of a crazy brunch spot. Can't miss here.

Nice midtown brunch spot
We enjoyed a tasty, reasonably priced summer Sunday brunch here.

Just a little too noisy for
Just a little too noisy for a get together with friends I hadn't seen for a while. We couldn't really hear each other.
8/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
I'd return just fir the sprouts.
This was our second visit to the restaurant and once again we were not disappointed. Five minute wait until our table was ready was most acceptable. Although the restaurant is extremely busy service is professional and fast. Two starters being salad and octopus were excellent. These were followed by ribs off the bone and cod on spicy Red rice. This coupled with the delicious balsamic glazed sprouts was perfect. Finished with the profiteroles and ice cream, excellent. Definitely a return to Restaurant

Try the ugly burger...
We chose the National because the client we were taking out is both a chef and a lover of hamburgers! I heard about the Ugly Burger and thought this would be the perfect venue for lunch. This is a great location for a business lunch. The staff is very friendly, the food is excellent, wonderful atmosphere... I would not hesitate to go back or to recommend it to others. Oh, and my client loved the ugly burger too!

Most special b'day - wow Branzino
The Branzino was amazing. The waiter was delightful. I ordered sorbet for dessert and I wish you could see how they made up the plate with "Happy Birthday" written in chocolate. A candle, too. Oh and the mussels were delicious, absinthe and fennel flavored! Thank you to The National.

Lunch and dinner
Delicious food. Polished but very pleasant and totally unpretentious atmosphere. Mostly biz clients for lunch, but still pleasant. Very lively, packed, vibrant for dinner.

A nice breakfast spot
While we've had a noisy, cramped, crowded dinner (that had great apps and dessert but not great entrees) here before, it seems like breakfast is the thing to do! The atmosphere is relaxed, comfortable and quiet with interesting breakfast options, good coffee and decent service. We had an interesting fruit salad that included fresh figs and dried fruit along with the usual suspects. My hubby loved his pork belly benedict and I liked my short rib "gravy and biscuits. We'd definitely return again for breakfast!

Sunday Brunch-very nice
It was quiet.....The restaurant is nice inside and if you have a booth, it's particularly easy to talk together.....Food was excellent, we had the fruit salad, pork belly Benedict and the biscuits and gravy.......Service was good, everyone was friendly

Nice brunch spot
We have been here twice for Sunday brunch. It's relaxing; the food is good and the service is attentive, but not annoying. And they don't rush the diners.

Noisy, but Delicious
It was unfortunate that we came to this restaurant on the wrong day. The UN was in session and trying to navigate the streets to get here set our mood as we entered. What saved this entire experience was the food. I ordered the pork chop and literally could have drank a bowl of the au jus that was covering the bottom of my plate. If I was at home, I would have licked my plate clean. The pork chop was cooked perfectly and the broccolini and cheese grits were delicious as well. The candied garlic didn't taste "candied" but I mashed them into my cheese grits. My mother ordered the roasted chicken, and it was equally as delicious. The herbed barley risotto was full of flavor and the sauce on the bottom was just as lick-worthy.

Memorable Dinner in Midtown
Had a great meal last night at The National filled with small plates and appetizers. Didn't bother diving into the entree section as all the small plates were too tempting. Steak Tartare was delicious and with unexpected additions like pickled hon shimeji & cherry pepper it makes it memorable. I always have Grilled Octopus when I see it on a menu and that too. It was tender and flavorful. Service was more then attentive and the space is fun. Just note it can be very noisy (even early in the week) so if you are hard of hearing, might want to reconsider for a different time of day. Will go back, again and again!
10/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
I have walked past the National a hundred times and never went in. A colleague suggested we go for dinner and it was very good. I will be backed.

Dinner with friends
I made the reservation for my friends Birthday.
We all watch "Chopped" and were curious how Mr. Zacharian's Restaurant would be.
As I had read in another review they tried to seat us near the Bar which was loud. I asked if we could get another table as I am hard of hearing in one ear. The Hostess did not hesitate and lead us to a banguett table need the window. It was much larger than the
Other. Our waiter was great and had not problem that we were sharing a couple of things. The only thing I can complain of was my pork chop was too salty for my taste.

Came from Canada
Booked online & was happy we made the trip. Food took a while but was worth it. Sharper steak knives please. Service was casually NY snobby. Didn't order dessert - needed a yummy chocolate / ice cream option. Thanks Geoffrey!
10/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
Fabulous - a must try!
On every trip to NYC, I try to visit the restaurant of at least one celeb chef. By far, Geoffrey is one of the best! The menu was interesting and offered plenty of intriguing options. The service was great, the food was excellent. We ordered many different dishes and each one we could have licked the plate. It was also nice to see the Chef present in the dining room.

Can't wait to come back...
Overall, the food was excellent, but one of the menu items was sold out. Of course, it was the one I had my heart set on as soon as I saw it. The waiter apologized, and everything else on the menu was spectacular. The restaurant was a bit noisy for its size, but that allowed our group to become equally as noisy. The food, as I said earlier, was excellent, and my only complaint would be a 20 minute wait for a party of 5, despite a reservation and a phone call earlier in the day from the restaurant confirming my reservation and time. If they would have suggested I come in 20 minutes later, it would have been perfect...
The menu here changes frequently - up to monthly, so I'll be back next time I'm in midtown...

We stumbled upon The National the day we arrived in the city. We were looking for lunch and the menu looked great! Most restaurants are impossible to get in without a reservation but we got lucky! We had a fabulous lunch and decided to return on our last day for breakfast. Our server told us the breakfast was amazing. We made reservations this time. The service on our return trip was not as attentive as the first, but it was good nonetheless. Breakfast was wonderful! We had the egg white and goat cheese frittata that came with a nice salad of mixed greens and radishes. We would recommend the restaurant for the food and atmosphere.
10/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
Went with a group of 5 for Saturday brunch. Plenty of options - breakfast and lunch ones. Everyone was happy with what they ordered. I got the portobella mushroom sandwich which was delicious. Others got omelets which they said were very good (not most amazing, but good); and shrimp tacos which said were very good. Good portion sizes. A bit pricey, but for the area it's located, fine. Service was good enough - only one waitress so that was a bit challenging, but she was attentive enough. Would go back and recommend.
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
I was the one who made the selection purely from reading reviews and with the location in mind. We all loved it and although the bar area was noisy the dining area was quieter with ample space between tables so that we could converse with out shouting. The appetizer portions were ample for sharing and we each got what we wanted. We will be back, either together again or on our own.
10/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
Interesting twists to dishes like brussel sprouts (halves roasted with creme fraiche and mustard sauce) made our meal very interesting and special. Great selection of apps and small plates.
10/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
Ask for a better table.
We went for a late night supper after the theater. I was told the kitchen closed at 10:30 so we hurried to get there at 10:00. Even though there were plenty of empty tables available, the hostess tried to seat us in the back at a 2 person table. Not the best table or view of the restaurant. I asked for a better table and got a round booth by the window. Much better. I think this simple change really enhanced our dining experience. We could enjoy the bar scene and it was great for people watching.
10/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
great menu - well prepared
great menu - well prepared and not overly seasoned food. Great atmosphere and nice bar area with a friendly staff. We would go back again.

Fantastic Special Occasion Dinner
We spent my son's 18th birthday celebration dinner at the National. We were a party of 9 and they sat us in a special alcove which was cozy but still part of the great vibe at this restaurant. The waiters were very attentive and efficient even though they had a full house that night. The appetiizers and main course entree's were across the board very outstanding. No one in our party was disappointed in what they got. The food was truly inspired and obviously Zakarian as the award winning Iron Chef is worthy of his reputation. At the end of the meal they brought a desert to my son with Happy Birthday written on it and a candle. He was well pleased and it ended a truly treat night at the National.

Great experience. The Brazino
Great experience. The Brazino was fabulous. The Pork was also excellent and my friend is still raving about the grits!

Everything about this restaurant
Everything about this restaurant is great except the noise level. It is too loud.
11/2/2013 5:00:00 PM
Dinner on sunday night was fantastic. The food is wonderfully prepared and a perfect portion size so you walk away fully satisfied but not over-stuffed. Sunday night had live music in the bar which was nice, but made for an extremely noisy dinner experience as the dining room is situated in close proximity. Would definitely dine again here, but probably only when there isn't live music as it made it difficult to talk.
11/2/2013 5:00:00 PM
we ordered five appetizers, all super, one too many because portions generous.
crispy brussel sprouts, polenta mushrooms, peppers especially yummy
11/3/2013 4:00:00 PM
Beyond good !
After dining at Mario "Lupa" earlier this week , Zarkarian "National " is the clear winner The oysters in the half were divine and the pork chop melted in your mouth
Service was excellent and would have earned 5 stars except that our waiter disappeared after he served us desert and port. After waiting 30 minutes we finally had to ask the manager for our check
11/4/2013 4:00:00 PM
I made a reservation to take a colleague visiting from SF to dinner. The food was very good but the restaurant was very busy and we had to sit in the bar area. If you go, wait for a booth on the other side. We moved tables because the crowd at the bar expanded and were literally standing around our table.
At the new table, the bar noise was still loud but we did enjoy the food and the waiter was very good.
11/6/2013 4:00:00 PM
Cannot wait until we go back!
Our server was competent but had an attitude and was flippant. None of that mattered when we tasted the delicious food and drinks!Excellent cocktails, delicious roasted octopus, steak was perfect, burger was amazing, and the polenta, I am dreaming about it!

Excellent Business Dinner
Business colleagues and I went to the National for dinner to discuss potential business issues. Used Open Table to book and asked for a quiet table. The National placed us in a round table in the back (away from the more chaotic bar scene in the main dining room), which actually had a curtain we could close if we wanted to (did not). Excellent customer service. The food was outstanding, as would be expected from Iron Chef Zacharian (who was sitting quietly at the front door at a table when I arrived, which give me a chance to say hello again - we met on the street some months before). Two of us had the Branzino, which was recommended by the server, and which was excellent. One ordered a side of Brussels sprouts. Excellent.
11/11/2013 4:00:00 PM
Best burger i've EVER had!! And the Red Carpet cocktail was delicious! Service was great, just a bit slow. Our server was very funny and energetic, too!
11/12/2013 4:00:00 PM
Really good food, attentive wait staff, though the persons delivering the food were the only detraction as they inexpertly reached in front of those seated and then awkwardly removed plates hovering as you took your last bite. Overall good experience though and I would return
11/14/2013 4:00:00 PM
Our waiter, Michal, made some
Our waiter, Michal, made some excellent recommendations from the menu. The pairing of the octopus with the cauliflower salad was a delicious first course . we followed that with the mussels with fennel and a charcuterie board with fresh bread to soak up the lovely broth that bathed the mussels. All the favors worked together along with a bright Prosecco , to create a perfect meal!
We will definitely return!

Birthday Brunch was Amazing
I went to GZ's restaurant The Naitonal for my birthday brunch. It was amazing. I would recommend the shrimp and grits as well as the passion fruit carafe (can't be missed). I expected a lot going here as I am a huge foodie and love Zakarian from Chopped and this place delivered! I will be back....

Nice Night Out
Had been here once before for a fabulous dining experience with a group of six and hoped to replicate it with two friends from London. We were seated in a great booth, far from the loud and bustling bar, which was great. Two of us had the potato leek soup, which was lukewarm at best and not very tasty. I tried to amp up the favor with some pepper, to no avail. The men had the steak tartare and loved it. Fortunately the entrees were superb, especially the pork chop with grits and broccollini - yum! Service for dessert and after-dinner drinks was a bit slow - the drinks did not arrive until we had all polished off our desserts, which was too bad. All in all, a nice evening.

Food was fantastic!
Everytime I go to NYC, I like to try a different celebrity chef's restaurant. I made early reservations as my wife and I were going to the theater afterwards. I liked the menu at the National much better than Lamb's Club. We had grilled octopus for our appetizer which was great. My wife had the pork chop and I had the short ribs...both were cooked perfectly and were flavorful and tender. The real star of the show believe it or not was the brussel sprouts. They were amazing. We also had the polenta. Wine is expensive but good. I wasn't really impressed with the desserts but overall an outstanding NYC dining experience. The restaurant itself is a little loud and not a cozy as I had hoped.

Saw the Jersey Boys; Great play; and had a great dinner.

Would recommend highly

We arrived early so sat in
We arrived early so sat in bar area, which was not very crowded. After waiting 15 + minutes, we were still not waited on. We ordered from the bar and were told by bartender he would have waiter serve us - who arrived a bit later and was distracted or perturbed, he was not rude, just a bit short. It appeared they were having a staff meeting of sorts - but that left the room without any wait staff for quite some time. We were promptly seated for dinner and the dining room staff, experience and food was fabulous - so other than short delay and lapse in service at the beginning, it turned into a great experience.

Best Thanksgiving Dinner
We were visiting from Calgary, Canada and are fans of Geoffrey Zacharian's from the shows we see on the Food Network. The Thanksgiving menu was outstanding.
I will recommend this restaurant to others to visit while in New York City.

A Favourite Destination
I must admit that I tried this restaurant after seeing the owner on T.V. I love everything about dining at the National/NYC. And so do my friends and acquaintances - that is what makes it a favorite destination. There is flexibility too. If a diner doesn't feel like something on the menu - the kitchen whisks up something else (fresh and simple). The icing on the cake is comfortable chairs in the dining room. I so appreciate dining in comfort.

National - A Treasure
Situated in the heart of Lexington Avenue hotel heaven, this American bistro is a haven of sanity, robust cooking, great cocktails and lively ambience. Friendly staff abound and the service is brisk without being brutish. Recently for brunch, there were preparations of short ribe, pork cheeks, omlets, portobello/red pepper sandwiches etc. All well prepared and accompanied by a perfectly spiced bloody mary.

Had dinner with friends from
Had dinner with friends from out of town. Great burgers, excellent soup and especially great scallop special. Had wonderful singer and small band singing background Christmas music. During the day it is very bright and a bit loud, but at night the lighting creates a little halo over your table making it seem very private.
