This was our first time here
This was our first time here since it was the Ugly Duckling / Whistling Swan. We wanted to do something different for Mother's Day, everyone that comes to visit us loves the ambiance of the country setting we live in, taking full advantage of Sturbridge and all it brings. The Duck did not disappoint. The open beam dark wood barn setting is exactly what we had hoped for, the kid friendly environment is what we needed, the attention to dietary restrictions was so important, having a Gluten Free menu was a major plus, and then the service and the food for everyone at the table, party of 7, was amazing. From the Salmon to the scallops and a gluten free menu to the chicken pot pie, everyone was raving about the food and setting.

it's everything it's quacked up to
We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner in the Duck. We were greeted with friendly smiles and good service. The food was good. The shrimp I had was very interesting, spicy and delish. I will return to the duck when we visit this area again. My only disappointment was the the house wine I selected was not very good. Food and service made up for it.

We were very pleased with our meal. Excellent wine choices and delicious martinis!! Will be going back for sure!

We eat at THE DUCK every time we go to Brimfield for the antique fair. Food is always good as is the service. This visit, we had ordered a appetizer that was sub par, we mentioned this to the waitress, and she immediately said she would take it off the bill. Our favorite entree is their fish stew, which never disappoints. They also had a duet singing in the bar area which while close to the dining area, doesn't interfere with dinner conversation.

Another great night at the Duck
Got my favorite table (corner by the stairs), with my favorite drink (Planter's punch), eating my favorite meal (chicken Alfredo) listening to my favorite guitarist (Rob) and of course dining with my favorite wife :^) Carol. My favorite waitress (Tammy) was serving in the main room however I was very impressed with Jammy as our waitress.

Revisiting an old favorite
We lived in Sturbridge for over thirty years and went to the Ugly Duckling frequently. This was our first visit back in six years and we went to The Duck. Brought back good memories. Food was very good and wait staff was very attentive. Definitely recommend The Duck for a pleasant evening.

Great staff...live singer and guitar music....good food made a nice evening out with friends. Very attentive to gluten free...have separate menu bread and pasta.

We have been eating at this
We have been eating at this restaurant for years and have never been disappointed. Our only complaint is the noise level, especially on a Saturday evening.
6/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
Love the Duck
The food is always good, we had a nice waitress and we love the fact it has live music. Awesome guitar player. We will be back. Quack!
6/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
The fried green beans with garlic lemon aioli were a treat to start our meal. My friend was charmed by the chicken salad (sandwich) with grapes, while I enjoyed the crispy chicken wrap with favorful pickled red onions. The pickling kept them from overwhelming my palate, which I appreciated. Fries were crispy and wonderful, but I concentrated on the wrap.
Must say I'm very happy to see the tone of the wood and high-ceilinged room remains, along with the unique bar setup and some favorites like Torta Rustica.
Nicely executed and delicious for a lunch!

Made a special occasion "special"
The Duck's food, service and associates made our gathering a wonderful afternoon. We came for a retirement party from Connecticut and Massachusetts and all agreed it was worth the drive. This was the second of our gatherings and we have all enjoyed the food and appreciated the wonderful service.
6/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
Our out-of-town guests asked "what's good here" when we first arrived. My husband and I looked at each other, and both said "We've never had a bad meal here", and we have been coming for years. As always, the food was great, our server was obviously familiar with the ever-changing menu and made helpful recommendations, service was timely on a busy Saturday evening, and the music was wonderful.
We hadn't been for dinner here in some time. The main reason was the fact that, in the past, The Duck didn't take reservations. We have discovered that is no longer the case, and this will be our go-to place when we have guests.

Quality fod, well prepared
Quality fod, well prepared & presented. Knowlegeable, helpful wait staff. kitchen was flexible in accommodating our needs. Q
Tim, our waiter, was a consummate professional.

The food is always excellent here, and beautifully presented. My orange glazed salmon was grilled perfectly. Homemade wild blueberry ice cream was a treat. Good wine list. Comfortable casual atmosphere.

Great Food Overall
Great Meal. Great Service. Would recommend to friends.
6/23/2013 5:00:00 PM
It was the first time we'd been to The Duck and we found a variety of choices on the menu, including drinks, wine, and beer, good food and service, and reasonable prices. The dinner salads and bowls of soup are large, so be prepared if you add that to your entree. The ribs were good and smoky flavored, meatloaf was excellent, and bouillabaisse was also excellent. The crowd was mixed; not many children or families (but we ate at 7:30) and many couples and small groups of friends, ages 30s-60s. The live music was a little loud; it was difficult to converse with more than one person. The bar is cool - sunken with captain chair seats. We would definitely go back.
6/27/2013 4:00:00 PM
Had not been in a long time. Food was excellent, service was good, server was very outgoing, menu had something for everyone.
6/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
Quack Quack... Quack Quack Quack...
We are local and bring friends for good food and a good time in the great atmosphere. The service and food overall is excellent. My husband, mostly vegetarian, has only 2-3 choices and feels the Caesar salad could have more flavor, our friends and myself find it very good. The big Martinis are wonderful. As is the entertainment.!

The Ducky is Just Ducky
Pre-Stageloft Theatre production dinner. Great service, great food, great time.
7/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
Originally, our reservation was for 6 people. We also needed to be seated downstairs, as one of our party was elderly & couldn't walk up the stairs. When we arrived, 15minutes early, the restaurant wasn't quite open, but the hostess was very gracious & said, "I wouldn't just let you stand around!" It was also no problem to change from 6 to 4 people & we could go upstairs because our elderly lady had to cancel. No one ever made us feel "in the way" & our waitress brought us bread & menus very quickly. We all raved about our meals too. We will definitely be back!
7/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
We were passing thru the area and found great reviews on the Duck. We had a very nice dinner, food was very good, waitress service was good, not great. We sat at the Bar afterwards for a drink and the bar tender served us a drink. We sat there for quite some time waiting for her to ask if we wanted a something else. She sort of tried to avoid looking at us. Finally we called her over. Felt like she was trying to push us out.
7/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Good food with a wide selection from sandwiches to pasta to steaks. A few single malts at the bar. Attentive service. Quiet if you go early, but can be fairly noisy later.
7/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Because The Duck is located close to the Mass Pike, it is an easy spot to meet friends and family. The menu has something for every taste.
7/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
The Duck is Great
This is the second time I have eaten at The Duck and once again, had a great meal. All four of us enjoyed our dinner, our waitress, and the atmosphere. Great job!
8/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
The restaurant was too noisey
The restaurant was too noisey for me. They had a folk singer who tried to sing over the patrons, which only made things worse. Also, they need to use real ice tea and not the stuff they have now. The food was good as usual. My husband said his hamburg was outstanding.
8/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
Same location..Great Experience!!
We have dined at "The Duck" ever since it was "The Whistling Swan".....and enjoyed it for many years. We decided we had not been in a long time so we decided to give it a shot once again under the new name and menu. We were not disappointed! The menu offered many new choices, as well as a handful of "classic Swan" choices. The food was prepared perfectly and with generous portions. It was delicious. The service was attentive and thorough, without being annoying. Pricing was about the same....fairly moderate. I remember it was delicious and I would order it again without hesitation! Live musicians were on hand and presented a lovely ambiance to our dinner.

Duck is good!
We were three couples, coming from CT, NH and Rockport, MA to meet for our annual get-together. We men are classmates from the Naval Academy, Class of 1957. When we arrived we were dismayed to find that we had reserved for a place that is upstairs with no elevator, and we're all in varying stages of low mobility. No problem for Duck! They set us up downstairs and gave us great service and food! The waitress even put up with our elderly humor!
8/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
Gotta love The Duck
On a Friday night, the atmosphere is perfect. Dim lighting, good wine, perfectly cooked steak (medium-rare, thank you) and live music. The noise level was higher than most restaurants, but it was lively, and not so loud that I had to yell to carry on a conversation. Definitely worth the 25 minute ride to get there!
8/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
Good food, great service convenient
We had a wonderful dinner. I had a steak perfectly prepared from grass fed local cattle, and the best truffle fries ever... I can't recommend them highly enough... they alone are worth the drive from where ever you are coming. The Duck is convenient for us because it is in Sturbridge where the Mass Pike and 84 merge. It is just perfect as a local stop for us. The service is welcoming and attentive.and we look forward to our next visit
8/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
A very nice evening
The steak and lobster was excellent. The music was good and the drinks were also very good. Was anything exceptional? No, but still a nice evening out...
8/28/2013 5:00:00 PM
Better than last year
We eat at the Duck every time we go to Brimfield for the antique fair and this time it was the best it has been. We had their heirloom tomato salad and bouillabaisse. The bouillabaisse was the best we've had all year, the spicy broth was full of vegetables, and the seafood was well cooked. Hard to find better in the area.
9/4/2013 5:00:00 PM
Good, but ask for the big room
Came for the third time in 10 days, this time with five guests and got seated in the overflow room! Which was disappointing, as I chose the Duck this time to have fun in the main room...
9/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
We were their with 4 other people and it was a little noisy for conversation but everything else was fine. Reasonable prices. Excellent prime rib. Sorry we hadn't gone sooner this summer.
9/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
Excellent Saturday Night
Our dinner at The Duck was excellent, the service was good, the live music was terrific, the ambience created by the architecture as well as the delight that was obvious in all of the patrons at the restaurant, made for a great night out. I highly recommend The Duck.
9/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
A great find in Sturbridge. Food was outstanding from start to finish. Scrod was prepared beautifully and the soups, French Onion and Clam Chowder were some of the best. Well worth the short drive if at a conference in Southbridge.
9/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
Cute Old Building
The Duck is in an historic building like so many places in Sturbridge. The food was very good, but there's not much room at the tables. It's a fun place.
9/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Pleasant atmosphere although
Pleasant atmosphere although a bit dark, good food, live entertainment.
9/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
What an unexpected find
A little hidden gem. The service was terrific, food dynamite and the atmosphere was intimate with low level ambient lighting. I was there for a business meeting but would definitely return for a romantic dinner. A must if you are in Sturbridge.
10/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great Neighborhood place
Great place with reasonable prices. Come here all the time.
10/10/2013 5:00:00 PM
Our friends recommended we go. We were not disappointed.
10/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
We Like to Eat
All of the meals were really good and my husband and I finished our meals in the restaurant. The kids had plenty to eat and leftovers to take home.
10/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
First Time at The Duck
I met my mom for dinner at The Duck and we had a really good meal. My grilled scallops came with butternut squash rizzoto and sauteed kale, and everything was delicious! A perfect fall meal. We shared some oysters which were pretty good, and the bread with olive oil was very tasty as well. I will definitely go back when I'm in the area again.
10/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
We loved the place...
The Duck was was chosen for our first date. .and all we could say was. ."I love this place"..the ambience was awesome. The view from our window. .colors of red, orange, yellow from the fall foliage. ..it took us us less than 15 seconds to choose our meal...Salmon..wish was delicious. I had a glass of Moscato..very good..a beautiful place for an unforgettable experience.
10/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
good mid point between CT and MA
Old barn, very charming, Clean, nicely lit, good and diverse menu with reasonable prices. I would highly recommend it
10/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
Stuck in the corner.
We were seated right away. We ordered martinis, the red velvet We split the apple, cranberry, pear, blue cheese, walnut salad. It was delicious. The main course I ordered the special 10 oz pork chop with an apple cream sauce, roasted actors squash, and I asked them to substitute rice pilaf for the house garlic mashed potatoes. Pork was grilled to perfection not over cooked still tender and juicy, acorn squash was delicious, the rice pilaf was the best I've ever eaten. My guest ordered the top sirloin. His was not as good. The steak was served sliced and over cooked not medium rare as ordered. It was medium well and drowning in sauce. He had the garlic mashed and green beans. Nothing special. Service was outstanding. Overall good experience.
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
Exceptional - yet again!
We choose The Duck for special occassions based on both their Gluten Free Menu and their outstanding service. While the seating itself can sometimes be less than desireable, once we have settled in and venture on the sensory journey, it is customary that we can tune out our close neighbors. The chef is so passionate, you can taste it in his meals, and the short ribs we were apprehensive about ordering have fast become one of our favorites!
Dont pass on the cheese plate special as there is always something for everyone and one of our delights. Decent wine list and service with a smile and quite often a good laugh too. We will continue to come back!
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
Our standby for a great lunch.
Three friends drive up from CT and I drive down from Holden ,Ma and this is our standard meeting place for lunch several times per year. It is always great and service is always good. Our favorite is the grilled cheese with apricot jelly but we do branch out. I had the thinly sliced prime rib with cheese and greens on a ciabatta roll with sweet potato fries this time and it was excellent. Good choices of wine as well.

Love The Duck
We had dined at The Duck once before and enjoyed it, so when we were meeting friends for dinner recently we suggested The Duck. Neither of the two couples had ever dined there before and we were all very happy with the quality and presentation of the food. I especially enjoyed the organically grown local grass fed beef from Brimfield that was offered. It was delicious!! We're looking forward to celebrating our daughter's boyfriend's birthday in a couple of weeks at The Duck.
11/7/2013 4:00:00 PM
Dinner for four
All of the food was great except the chicken parm. It was very stringy and tough. But the wait staff was very pleasant.

The Duck at the Whistling Swan
The Whistling Swan has two restaurants located in the building, an Italian restaurant on the ground level, Avellino, and the Duck, upstairs. The Duck is a lovely, if a little old-fashioned restaurant with a vaulted ceiling and large wrought iron chandeliers. Our server, Cheryl, was very knowledgeable and took great care of us. We had the calamari, lobster mac n cheese and fried oysters for appetizers. All delicious! For entrees we had the duck and scallops. Both good choices with unusual and delicious side dishes such as butternut squash risotto. We had chocolate cake for dessert since we were celebrating a birthday. Overall a very nice restaurant! We would return. We would also be tempted to try Avellino too.
