Toast! More TOAST!
We willingly broke every single self-imposed dietary restriction to experience The Spice Table. It was well worth it. We enjoyed the flattened chicken and the lamb satay. We were blinded by the magic of Kaya Toast. Is it possible that six ingredients can cause euphoria? Yes.

Good food...Great flavors
The food was good. Flavors were excellent, but a little too much of the same texas toast style white bread on a few plates...at least trim the crust on some of the bread like with the marrow. We ordered a lot of food so maybe thats why it came up a lot, but thats what tapas is for yes? Good flavor, small wine and beer list, but good selections.
Lamb Belly and Tripe skewers were great as well as the fresh red skin peanut dipping sauce.
Fried Cauliflower was enjoyable, slight curry in tempura batter.
Grilled Bone Marrow was on point.Creamed Kale was so so . Shortrib was good but sambal is SPICY!
Chicken livers and toast was good. Coconut Toast was good and I am sure moneymaker.

I love going to The Spice Table. The food is always so good. The only bad thing is that the menu changes regularly so things you like might disappear... so enjoy them while you can!

Great menu, intriguing spices!
We shared about 5 plates, each providing a different combination
of flavors, all providing a very pleasant and intriguing experience.

Outstanding food and ambiance!
The food is really good. It's an eclectic menu, but everything tastes fantastic!

My husband and I tried Spice Table Saturday night after visiting the Japanese American National Museum nearby in Little Tokyo. Everything we chose was delicious--fresh, well prepared and tasty. Service was friendly and efficient, & decor was casual but appealing. Only problem was the red snapper dish was a bit too spicy for us. We'll be back!

A unique find
We enjoyed a varriety of dishes that each had a unique balance of flavors and spices, I would come back to try more of the menu. Each time I looked around I saw more dishes that I would like to have had a chance to try. The Spice Table is located across from MOCHA has a close parking lot, and is with in walking distance of shops in Little Tokoyo. I felt like a guest of the resturant, The staff was very attentive, knowledgeable. The food was fantastic, and unique. I would come back and would want to bring friends.

My wife and I have been to Spice Table a few times and have had a great experience on all occasions. We usually order many small plates and share, so we can try as many things as possible.. I definitely recommend this place

Fun Restaurant with creative dishes
Our party of six was promptly seated outside. We ordered Grilled Eggplant with chile sauce, Grilled Bok Choy in oyster sauce and delicious mushrooms, and fried cauliflower as appetizers. All excellent. Also Samal Fried Potatoes, Grilled Scallops with sambal, Spicy Chicken livers, black pepper crab(both to toast. Larger portions were Grilled Flattened Chixken with honey, lemongrass, served over garlic mashed potatoes. Also Beef Rendeng, Kon Loh Mee (egg noodles with ground pork, pork belly slices. Deserts were a perfect compliment to the unique and spicy flavors. They were Spiced Cognac Ice Cream and Kaffir Lime Custard(excellent). . Nice interprtation of Vietnamese and Thai cooking. Our server was excellent and knowledgable.

Downtown is a dining paradise
This place is a gem. The Laksa is Asian comfort food with a kick. A must order. We had the special black cod with cumin custard. It was Unique and very tasty. This is the best of Southeast Asian cuisine, brought into the modern sophisticated urban food scene. This is one of the very best new restaurants that we have tried.

Was eager to try out this
Was eager to try out this top pick by Jonathan Gold and before they closed down for the Gold Line construction. Ambience was nice and rustic but a bit too loud due to acoustics of the main room. Our server was very friendly and helpful and took excellent care of us. Tried about 6 different dishes and all were very good. Favs were the Gem Lettuce Salad and the Beef Rendang.

tasty small plates
Very tasty food at the Spice Table. All of the dishes were full of flavor, some even spicy-hot, and nicely presented. My only quarrel is that the food is not well-paced, a problem with small plates places. The dishes are delivered at the convenience of the kitchen, and not in any predictable order. As a result, three of the four dishes we ordered were delivered simultaneously. Although all were delicious, having a deluge of dishes does not make for a leisurely meal!

The mix of Asian flavors was amazing. Having been to Singapore I can say the chef really knows what he is doing. Great food!

Addiction Begins Here
I can't say enough about Kaya Toast. Can a meal made of five ingredients be so perfect? Each time we visit, we try one new dish. It's flavorful, salty, spicy excitement! We'll be back for dishes involving duck soon.

Great food but noisy
Fabulous Singaporean/Malaysian inspired cuisine. Best Lahksa I've had outside of Asia. But quite noisy to the point of being uncomfortable.
6/26/2013 4:00:00 PM
Despite our thoughtless ordering (too much sambal), we had a great dinner.
Food was uniformly delicious, with unusual but accessible spice combinations. The burger was as good as advertised. Potatoes sambal were perfectly done: each small potato became the world's best tot. Menu is wide enough to accommodate all kinds of tastes (and, I suspect, dietary restrictions). I could even see bringing a well-behaved child here.
Had a nice Craftsman Cabernale on tap, and the soft drinks are thoughtfully done, too (which is particularly unusual).
Service was prompt without being intrusive and we ended up feeling, well, served.
I can see why this is such a hot ticket.

The reviews were right
What you may have read about The Spice Table is true. The food is excellent. The combination of flavors in the dishes were both subtle and unique. Our favorites were the soft shell crab and the pigs tail. The former was perfectly fried in a wonderful light batter, and the latter was an unexpected pleasure, offering a great combination of meat, fat and crispness. No wonder this restaurant is on so many "best" lists.

Elevated Southeast Asian
Everything we ordered was fresh, vibrant, cooked perfectly and nailed that lovely Southeast Asian spice profile while still having their own take. Elevated Southeast Asian for sure. A very hip, and noisey spot for foodies, hipsters and downtown neighborhoodies. It's worth a drive from anywhere in LA if you want to get this style of food in a well run restaraunt. Service was impeccable and friendly.

spice it up with family or friends
With it's warm brick walls and intimate scale, The Spice Table cozily wakes you up with spicy variations on some familiar asian treats. The cereal prawns, anchovy peanuts and scallop small plates were delicious starters to share amongst "pescatarians". And the fried cauliflower with a tangy dipping sauce was so good we ordered more. Our party of four shared the Laksa large plate-seafood and rice noodles in a diabolically spicy and creamy coconut broth-Yum! The desserts are not to be missed-a spiced soft serve ice cream and a custard with lemongrass notes were the perfect endings. Good wine and beer selection as well.

amazing dinner for 7
Brought 6 other friends. About half were out of towners and everyone enjoyed the spices and sophisticated flavors. Enjoyed the Craftsman beers on tap and everyone had a great time.

The Resturant is closing next year, so get there soon.

amazing food. the pig tail and black cod custard had to be my favorite although lamb belly satay follows shortly after.

Love it - Again
We've been here many time over the last couple of years. It's a great date night place in a cool part of town with a great vibe. We'll be back in the near future.

Excellent food. Way too noisy.
Shared dinner with two other adventurous dinners. Great variety of southeast Asian tastes, best to share the plates. The sauces served with each dish were outstanding; with sour and hot tastes nicely melded. The staff, particularly at the bar, were helpful. However, the noise level (8:30 pm on a Wednesday) distracted from the experience. Hard to have a conversation to get info about the dishes from the server. I'd like to go back but will avoid a peak time.

Birthday to remember
This was a spot I had picked out for my 33rd birthday and had been scoping for awhile being I moved to downtown Los Angeles the year before. Looked inviting from the outside and even better when my family and I entered. The host greeted me and acknowledged my reservation and greeted me for my birthday showing that she had read my online comments. The waitress and various chefs were quick and not without smile. Service a plus aside, the food was spectacular. Each dish with full flavor and spice that lived up to the name. I definitely recommend this place to couples and groups looking for an energetic, friendly and romantic atmosphere. And to top it all off they gave me a complimentary Kaffir Lime Custard Dessert with candle! We will return.

An all around fantastic experience. Do not miss the Kaya toast
8/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
Been to Spice Table 4 or 5 times now and every time has been fantastic. The fatty but superbly seasoned lamb belly satays, the fried cauliflower, and the spicy and crisp potatoes are mandatory for our table every time. It is amazing how so many dishes can be so spicy but not unbearably hot. The one problem on this latest visit was the service. On a slow night the waitress was not having a good day. She didn't get everyone's drink order, then she forgot to input two of the dishes we ordered. She made up for it with a free dessert and many apologies.
Still, after also visiting Lukshon, a similarly styled Asian fusion restaurant, just as often as Spice Table, I would say my appetite for both places has been satiated.
On to something new...

Unique Spices and Flavors
Staff could not be more accomodating. Service efficient and unobtrusive. Some menu selections better than others. Cauliflower, black cod, spicy chicken livers, rib-eye all delicious. Lamb belly satay not so much. Decor dark with brick walls and curtains; although view is none existent. Fun place for groups to share many small plates and flavors. Nice selection of beer.

Spice Table won our hearts
We enjoyed everything we had. Four dishes were enough for the two of us, because one of the four was the outstanding burger. I especially enjoyed the creamed kale with pork belly.
We appreciated that you could order 4 ounce beers (or the normal larger sizes) because it allowed us to try some different things.
The servers were nice, went out of their way to explain the dishes and their ingredients.

My favorite restaurant in LA!
The chef Bryant NG and his wife/co-owner/front of house Kim make for a spectacular evening. The choices are such clever twists on both sophisticated and yet local Asian food, but brought down to a very approachable and accessible level. I have eaten there several times and each time is better than before. Go for the creamed kale, Kaya toast, spicy chicken livers, the fried chicken and their own Spice Table Cheeseberger. I almost hate to admit I way over order there to have a lot of different tastes. Bryant was awarded the Chef of the Year 2012 by Food and Wine Magazine and you will see why. They may have to close because the Metro line is planned to go right through their building, so hurry over there!
8/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
Two of us split the creamed kale, bone marrow, pig's tail and lamb satay. It was the right amount of food for two. The lamb satay and the bone marrow were the stand outs and both were excellent. The creamed kale was good... for kale. The pig's tail was tasty but really really fatty. I would not order it again. The service was excellent. The food came out quickly and our server was on top of our drink needs. The space itself has a lot of character although I could see the main dining room being noisy. Absolutely worth checking out if you're in downtown.

We have been here a few times
We have been here a few times and it has always been great. Our only suggestions, there is a little too much noise for easy conversation and the A/C did not seem adequate on a rare hot and humid LA day.
8/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
Weak wine list.
Weak wine list.
Great small bites.
-Grilled bak choy
Some dishes were a hit and miss :
Grilled Bone marrow was texturally off.
The crab dish with a toast had an uninteresting flavor.
Great overall experience, great service, great ambiance,
Will definitely come back.

Try it before it's gone
They are having to close in March - get there before they go.
Varied menu of basically tapas. Everything we had was super
tasty, somewhat spicy and oh so good.

A Must Visit!!
Loved it! We had the Kaya Toast, Laska, and the Lamb Belly Satay. Perfect amount to share between 2 people. Food did not disappoint. I would highly recommend this place to anybody looking for amazing Vietnamese/Singaporean cuisine in downtown. Service was excellent, environment was warm, and food was delicious. Make your next dining outing here.

Spice Table is a warm and friendly restaurant in an old renovated building in Little Tokyo. An interesting variety of Asian-influenced plates--easy to share and try different things. Delicious. Also a nice bar.
9/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food was really delicious -- everything we tried was good. We want to come back so we can try the rest of the food. The place was kinda small, though, so it didn't feel relaxing. As far as service, there certainly was a lot of attention (e.g., refilling our glasses with water, taking away plates), but it almost felt like we were being rushed, too.
9/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
There's a party in my tummy....
ok, apologies for the yo-gabba-gabba reference but it just seemed a fitting description for our meal. have read about this
place for awhile and was not disappointed. everything we ordered was delicious with the exception of the fried chicken. we were a party of 4 so some of the small plates were a little too small to share but entrees were good sized portions. can't wait to go back.

Superior Vietnamese Cuisine
A very interesting menu very well executed. Yes the prices are a bit on the high side for Asian food in LA, but not for gourmet food of this caliber. Also, I'm not sure why the complaints on Yelp about the portion sizes. Visually they're not very big, but much of the food is very rich. For two people we ordered 2 small plates and one large plate to share and had to take food home. Plus one glass of wine and one beer and tip and we were still looking at less than $40 a person. Nice space too, albeit very loud.
9/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
My friends have a variety of dietary restrictions, but we were all able to eat - a lot! - at Spice Table. And though upon first blush you might think items like, cauliflower, broccoli, bone marrow, eggplant might sound dour, but let me assure you that the Spice Table knows their way around spice. Each dish was layered with flavor. We left feeling very full and very satisfied. I will be back often!

All is well at the "Table"
Really liked the fusion of Asian cuisines. I've lived in Thailand and was there with a friend from Laos. We both really enjoyed our meal. The staff could not have been more helpful and more knowledgable!!

Absolutely one of the best meals and dining experience I've had in...forever. Get the spareribs.
10/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
I didn't know what to expect when I went to Spice Table, but I was delighted at the quality of the food. Everything was fit for sharing, Each small dish could be split between two people, the larger ones between three. Every dish was pretty good, but two specifically were outstanding. The spare ribs were awesomely tender and flavorful. The meat fell off the bone so easily I was able to eat them with chop sticks. The best dish of the evening was the Kaya (spelling?) toast. It was two pieces of toasted bread with some kind of jam (I think it was coconut) between two slices. Then they mix slow cooked egg, white pepper, and soy sauce into an incredibly divine dipping sauce. I'd return to the restaurant just to have that again. Also good marrow.

The Spice Table Delivers
Took my fiancee here on a busy Saturday night to celebrate our engagement that afternoon. Had made a 6:30 reservation and due toLA Traffic we did not arrive until just past 7 PM. I called the restaurant from the road explaining we were running late. Upon arrival they had held our table despite it being a busy night. Complimentary champagne and congratulations from the owner and staff despite our late arrival. Service was outstanding, matching the food. Creamed Kale with pork bellies and Black pepper crab toast were exquisite and complex. Grilled Chinese broccoli and raw yellow tail were subtle, tasty interludes before the Beef Rendang. The BF was the only large plate we ordered. It was an intricate yet hearty delight. Love this place.

Enjoyed my meal
Went to this restaurant with my boyfriend - our reservation was for 9pm. We were running a little late and around 9:15pm we got a call from the restaurant asking if we were still making it because the kitchen closes at 9:30pm and they wanted to make sure that we made it before that so we could order! We ended up making it and we ordered: Fried Cauliflower, Sambal Potatoes, Pepper Crab on Toast, and the Beef Rendeng. The cauliflower was my favorite (it is basically a cauliflower in a tempura batter, deep fried) and the potatoes were great as well! The crab and beef were ok, not my favorite. Overall, a really good experience. The waitress was really nice as well and very attentive.

Great litte gem in downtown LA
Incredible Food; great atmosphere. Was my first time visiting and I will definitely be returning
11/25/2013 4:00:00 PM
What a great venue. We really had a fantastic experience here. The crab toast in particular blew us away!
I'm really sad to hear they're closing in order for the city to build a parking lot. What a shame! I'm sure the restaurant, in whatever form it ends up taking, will land on its feet and continue to impress.

Unique flavors in an awesome building with great ambiance! I would definitely go back (and would have a hard time not ordering everything again it was all so delicious)
