When in Portland, ME go to Fore Str
I am fortunate to go to Portland, ME, When ever I am there I make a point to go to Fore Street. I have never been disappointed in 15 years. This year I was lucky and went two days in a row. The menu changes daily, many items locally sourced. The waitstaff is very knowledgeable and very helpful. Many items are cooked on the open hearth, it is fun to watch them cook. It has always been a great experience!

We have dined at many five star restaurants around the world, and Fore Street does not disappoint! We had high expectations due to the number of great reviews, and it exceeded them all. We had the calamari appetizer as well as the seafood crudo. Both were very fresh and prepared to perfection. For the main course, we had a very savory and juicy thick cut pork chop and a flavorful and moist roasted halibut - outstanding! The signature chocolate pie was delicious as well, and their coffee was of a very high quality. We will be back!

My bf and I came to Portland,
My bf and I came to Portland, ME for the first time. One of his friend recommend this place to us and we made reservations in advance. After a long 6 hr car ride from NYC. We were glad that the hostess seated us on time. The waiter was super nice. We had oysters, pork belly, and mussels for appetizers. The pork belly was so so but the mussels were amazing. The best I had so far. For entrees I had the halibut and he had the duck. Both were great dishes. The bill came out pricey which is what we expected. This is normally what we will pay for a night out in NY. But it was all worth it. I will definitely recommend and come back again.

As good as I remember
Left Maine 14 years ago and came back to celebrate a special occasion. Fore Street was one of our favorite spots then .... and everything was as good as we remembered. The mussels are a special treat. Delicious, roasted under a fire, served with great crusty bread. Perfect. Our entrees were duck and pork loin - both were delicious and perfectly prepared.
The server was terrific - I mentioned that we were celebrating a birthday, and the strawberry rheubarb dessert we ordered came out with a candle and Happy Birthday written on the plate in chocolate sauce. Very thoughtful....
An excellent meal. Always nice to have reality live up to the memory.

I always make reservations
I always make reservations at Fore Street when visiing my grandchildren at camp in Maine. If it was located in New York I would certainly go very often. I have never been disappointed.

the best bread in the world;
the best bread in the world; fabulous crumb, crust and flavor!! best brick oven cooking you can watch from many tables. Best restaurant in maine. top ten we have dined at in the world, when you take into account food quailty and price. Reservations a must. Must book at least two weeks in advance or be there before 5PM. they keep a few tables for walk in but if you get there by 5:30 you will half to wait 2-3 hours.

Another great meal in Portland
We have been to Fore Street on all of our previous visits to Portland, and this dinner probably ranks in the top two of all time. Our waitperson, Lance, was congenial, informative, humourous, and just the right combination of efficient and attentive. All our menu choices were beautifully prepared and presented, as well as very delicious. We took a pass on dessert immediately after dinner, and returned at 9:45 P.M. to enjoy dessert and an after-dinner drink at the bar. The bartender also exhibited the same high-level of customer service as Lance had at dinner. The only unfortunate part is that we, consequently, almost never get to any of the other fine restaurants in Portland!

One of the best spots in Portland.
One of the best spots in Portland. The menu is based on local ingredients so is always different. My wife had the ravioli and I had the duck - both superb. You really can't go wrong here. Plus they make a great Manhatten!

Outstanding the best in Portland
We went here on Friday night and it was so good that we came back on Saturday.

My favorite restaurant
We love Fore Street so much that we make a trip to Portland from Boston just as an excuse to eat dinner there. It is consistently wonderful in all the important areas, food, ambiance and service. It stays true to itself without being self-conscious. It did fresh and local food before the term "locavore" was ever used commonly and has never been trendy; just simply excellent.

Had the lobster entree and a side of sliced tomatoes, pretty amazing, quality fresh produce shines through in every dish!
8/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
Fore is one of our favorite restaurants. Always fresh local produce, seafood and really everything on the menu. The atmosphere is casual with open kitchen. Especially during the summer months always make your reservation at least three weeks early, always busy here!

Wonderful meal with amazing service
We have been trying to get into this restaurant the last couple of visits to Portland. It was everything everyone said it would be. The service was amazing. Everyone starts off with a delicious loaf of fresh bread from the bakery downstairs (the owner of fore owns the bakery as well). I had the mussels to start in a white wine sauce followed by a halibut dish that was out of this world. They change the menus every night so you never really know what's going to be available but the selection is broad and delicious, so there is something for everyone. Make sure to save room for dessert!

Feast prepared/served in cast iron!
The nondescript exterior--with its small, brass sign--reveals immediately, upon entering, the word-of-mouth popularity of "the best restaurant in town," per an exclusive, men clothing store in Portland. Although our reservation had been set for a couple of weeks, confirmation of a careful choice--for early dinner on a last night in town--proved an accurate assessment of our experience. From featured glasses of unknown wines, to the modern "basket" of sliced bread (fresh from the baking company downstairs), to the sumptuous sea bass entree' (broiled and served in a cast iron skillet) that our server kindly fileted at table, dinner exceeded elevated expectations. Sharing a house-made chocolate torte capped a FUL[L]filling epicurean feast.
8/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
All the plates were good, with the fresh bread made just below (the restaurant has its own bakery). Good service in a nice design.

Great all around Steak and pork cooked perfectly.Wonderful service. My most favorite restaurant in all of New England. Worth the 100 mile trip from Marblehead Ma

Every dining experience at Fore St. includes consistently great food and exceptional service.
8/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
Everything else pales in comparison
A big time foodie friend calls Fore Street his favorite US restaurant and now I see why. The food and ambiance is fabulous with service to match. Relaxed yet totally on top of their game. Surely one of the very best you will ever experience.

Did not disappoint
We'd been looking forward to dinner at Fore Street for a long time. From beginning to end, everything was first-rate: excellent cocktails, a nice wine list, well-prepared and delicious food, scrumptious desserts. The waitstaff was friendly, well-informed and efficient. We recommend Fore Street to anyone wanting a truly good meal in Portland.

Excellent as usual!
I took 3 guests to Fore Street & as usual the experience was wonderful. The server was professional & extremely well versed in both the bar & kitchen offerings. The food was imaginative, well presented & delicious. Two of us had the flounder which was moist & was accompanied by a tasty sage sauce, another guest had the lobster dish & my other guest the chicken - all perfectly prepared. Ditto for the appetizers & the side dishes. The chocolate torte & the blueberry cobbler were to die for. The only negative is that the restaurant has a tendency to get very loud at times - I make my reservations early in the evening & it's usually not an issue. As far as consistency, food, & service go, this is probably the best restaurant in Portland!
9/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
We arrived from out of town with a group if 10. EVERYONE loved their food (every course)...wine choices were outstanding.
Service was the best I've experienced in a long time..our waiter knew each menu item in depth...and that is commendable since the menu changes nightly. Absolutely beautiful open kitchen and old brick walls.
9/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
Excellent food service.
Everything was amazing. One of my favorite restaurants. We were on a Maine 5 years ago and ate here and loved it and couldn't wait to go back when we were back in portland this time.
9/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
A bit rushed
While the food and service were very good-the seatings are scheduled in such a way that you feel somewhat rushed for the amount of money that is being spent
9/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
very good meal
best atmosphere in entire US for our tastes (lighting, layout, smells, sightlines). but my wife and I disagree on food: she thinks it peaked a couple of years ago ("it used to be OMG!, but now it's just very good") while I think that other than one completely over-buttered meal we had their last year, the food continues to be excellent. so a 4-star rating for what used to be a 5-star experience.
9/26/2013 5:00:00 PM
Fore St has been a favorite of ours and my husbands most fav place in Portland! We are part time Mainers and eat there a few times each summer and for my husbands birthday, which is where we were last week. The food is amazing, the service is always impeccable, it's fun to watch the open kitchen action, and we always marvel at how busy they are year round. Keep it up guys and see you again soon!
9/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Exceeded our expectations
The way I could describe this gem is the food was simple yet could please the most sophisticated pallet. The presentation AMAZING on every dish served. We were recommended to Fore Street by a business associate that is local and told us if we had to pick only one restaurant this would be it. He was correct. Since the menu changes daily we had no idea of what the prices would be and expected $$$$. To our surprise we found the price to value to be more than fair.
One last thing. You MUST make reservations 30 days in advance
9/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
unbelievable dining experience.....
Being from a larger city, visiting little Portland Maine, we did not expect much even though we had heard great things about Fore Sreet. I tell you, no one exaggerated. This place is fantastic! The food was unique, fresh, tasty and beautifully prepared. The service was friendly and welcoming - no rushing us around even though it was very busy, guiding us with great recommendations. The cocktails were fantastic. My wife and I only wished we lived closer so we could return the next night and get our "second choices!"

We had reservations at Fore
We had reservations at Fore Street for our 10th anniversary. It was our first time there and was even better than expected. We arrived early, had a drink at the bar, were seated right on time. Our waiter was attentive and friendly. The food was amazing! From appetite to dessert we loved every single bite! Would highly recommend! Hope to go back to Portland one day and eat here again!

Great but could have been better
I've been to Fore st many times and typically the food is excellent. I'll certainly be back but the dinner I had this past weekend was not the best I have had there. I ordered the soup (delicious), the clams (also wonderful) and the duck as my entree. The Duck was very good but it came on a bed of wild rice mixed with a sauce that had way too much honey(?) in it. It did not compliment the duck at all and seemed like a real "miss" from the kitchen. I mentioned this to my server and she apologized but did not offer any sort of consolation - I'm not the type to complain for perks but I think in my case it was warranted. That said, Fore st is almost always amazing. Just not that night :(

Best restaurant in Portland
Made a reservation at Fore Street based on reviews I read online. I was skeptical since there was no posted menu to preview and I am a foodie, wanted to be sure this was going to be a great dinner. Upon arrival we immediately loved the ambiance. A beautiful space with large windows, lots of wood, soft lighting and a view of the open ovens and spit. Meats, fish, and vegetables are either locally farmed and/or organic. Our waiter was very calm, informative and suggested a spectacular wine to accompany our dinner. I had pacific roasted salmon with a cassoulet of cured pork and duck confit that was off the map in terms of flavor composition. Amazing! My husband had duck breast with wild rice and delicious sweet berry glaze. Exquisite!

A Gem in Portland
No visit to Portland would be complete without dinner at Fore Street! We enjoyed a wonderful dinner and excellent service. This restaurant is apparently one of the top rated in the country and it certainly lives up to that!

Relaxed atmosphere- great service. Food was very fresh. We both loved our salads. Hake was excellent- salmon was good. Prices a bit high, but will visit again.

Fore Street is consistently
Fore Street is consistently good. The food is locally sourced, well prepared, nicely plated and well served. However, if you are looking for GREAT (which is what we are) it isn't here. A rocket & apple salad, greens were fresh, apples were tasty, nothing special.. The quail appetizer was well prepared but lacked seasoning & cauliflower puree was cold. Oven roasted mussels were good with a well seasoned sauce. Halibut was a bit overdone and for $36, the portion was small and served with no vegetable. The roasted beets were good, but again lacked salt & pepper. tarte tatin - delicious w/cinnamon ice cream.
Nothing wrong with Fore Street but after Grace and Street & Co. this week, the comparison is natural.
10/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
I've tried to go to Fore street a few times and I'm so glad we made it. The seared foie gras was incredible. Rib eye delicious and pork loin was scrumptious. The staff was so friendly - treated so very special for our anniversary. And wine list was plentiful with fantastic wines.

This was an incredible special occasion dinner for us! The food was delicious on a chilly fall night in Portland. We will definitely return when we are back in Portland.

Exceeded the highest expectations
Wow. Dining at Fore Street was definitely a memorable experience. After talking to several people familiar with Portland, and reading the reviews, my expectations were definitely high. The experience delivered and then some, with fantastic ingredients, sublimely prepared food, knowledgeable service, and beautiful atmosphere. We walked in about ten minutes before our reservation, and were immediately ushered to a sweet two-top that I would have picked myself if given the choice. This was a highlight of our visit to super foodie Portland! Fore Street is clearly a fantastic restaurant with people who care deeply about what they do. If you have the chance, go! I hope to visit many more times to taste many seasons worth of wonderful food.

Unusual menu does not disappoint!
Loved some of the choices on the Fore Street menu which changes nightly. I sampled for the first time ever, despite spending months along the seashore every year, razor clams baked in a very tasty sauce. Lots of choices for adventuresome eaters, and for more typical diners too. My husband loved his pork loin. Our waiter gave good recommendations for a wine, and was very friendly. Prices not bad at all for the quality of the food and atmosphere. Delicious homemade bread. Would love to go again, next tie I am in Portland.
10/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
Way too noisy
It's a great restaurant with inventive and delicious food. But we had the misfortune of sitting at a table next to an incredibly loud group of inebriated people, one of whom whistled through her fingers piercingly and repeatedly, as if summoning a cab. While it was not the fault of the restaurant, they probably should have done something to ameliorate the situation, as it was disturbing to many of the diners and definitely affected our experience.

I had been waiting to eat at Fore Street for over three years and the experience did not disappoint! All menus are created that day with local ingredients with shows the dedication and skill they put into their kitchen. The mussels are by far the best I have ever had and the fish and meat options were great. The ambience is fun and romantic at the same time.

Fore Street is First on My List
Restaurant was warm. With wood oven burning away; the wait staff was great, stopping periodically to check in with us. Food was superb! Greens salad was just right; a sampling of raw oysters from various waters near & in Portland; our waitress explained in detail. The crusty bread was wonderful. I had flounder, the filet was thicker & seared to perfection with a small dollap of root vegetable hash, for a differing taste, was a nice addition. My husband had a med. rare ribeye steak; again, cooked to perfection, accompanied by a side of chunky garlic mashed potatoes; the best steak ever! I ended my meal with a samplers plate of locally made chocolates; the ones taken to go never made it to daylight! Just a great experience.

Have been there many times
Have been there many times when we visit Portland and always forget menu does not have "plain" food. Always have to ask for sauce on side. Would be nice to have plain roasted chicken rather than something with "extras" I do not care for. Also they have a policy of no substitution. Need better lighting at some tables - could not read menu with one small candle and no overhead lights. Took out small flashlight, but felt ridiculous doing it.
