My husband and I had a fish platter for our main, and it was amazing. There were 9 different types of fish all cooked very well. My only negative would be they served the fish with rice and potatoes, I personally would have preferred steamed veggies, but that's probably just me being picky. I would strongly recommend this restaurant.

My family has been dining at Charivari for years. The food, service, and atmosphere are always excellent. Chef and Maria are always friendly and helpful. My granddaughter chooses Charivari for her birthday dinner every year. We look forward to the Oktoberfest specials each year. Love it!

We always look forward to a dinner at Charivari. Maria and all of the staff are always so welcoming and the food is always perfection. We both had steak and both were perfectly cooked. The rhubarb cobbler was just the right finish to a wonderful meal.

Feels like you are back in Europe!
What a gem of a restaurant! The food was just like you get in Germany, Hungary and other places in Europe. They have a nice and varied menu. Did not try the steaks, but I bet they are great. I had the Veal Zurich. It was in a very tasty brown sauce and accompanied by a potato pancake. All was great. My husband had the Weiner Schnitzel and said it way very good. He tasted mine and liked it even better. The lobster bisque (soup) was not heavy like some can be. It even had some nice bits of lobster in it. It is a little pricey, but worth it. Thanks for extending our Europeon memories!

We recently enjoyed the prix fixe 6-course menu for 6. The complementary pork pate - always delicious, was followed by a cappuccino bean soup -wonderful, totally unique. The mushroom risotto with foix gras was perfect, moist and rich. The paper thin carpaccio was the best ever. A roasted hazelnut salad was a light interlude before the entrees. We had salmon - how they get it slightly crusty without overcooking is a mystery - and hanger steak. The dessert a sinful dark chocolate hazelnut torte.
Charivari always pleases. A nice wine could use more selections under $40. Service attentive but not intrusive. If you enjoy inventive modern Euro food served with flair and cooked to perfection, you owe yourself a visit to this midtown gem.

Charivari? YOU BET!
The restaurant is in the Midtown area, which is vibrant with a diverse culture. The restaurant may seem out of place, but it is a wonderful treat! The food is done in a European preparation of exquisite flavors and ingredients. Even the "ordinary" such as Oysters on the Half Shell is done not with the regular "cocktail" sauce, but with a vinaigrette with fresh basil and shallots. The service is perfection, with attention to every detail.
The owner/chef came to our table to talk with us and wanted to make sure we were well taken care of
It is a recommendation that I have already made to quite a few folks. It was a wonderful experience. Though it was our first visit, it will not be our last!!!

Dining here is always a treat!
Dining here is always a treat! The food is outstanding every time and the service is exceptional. The white asparagus menu is divine.

Charivari is unique!
If diners are looking for a quiet, unhurried and unique dining experience in Houston, Charivari is perfect. We have never had a bad meal, the staff is always attentive but not intrusive, and you can actually talk to your companions at table without yelling and you can hear them. (The latter we find to be unusual these days.) There are seasonal specials in addition to the regular menu and lunch has several options as well.

We had dinner here on friday. I found it online after reading reviews and tought we should try it. We like trying different resturantsnevery week. The service was great, food was excellent and the price was very reasonable. The atmosphere was good until a large group was seated next to us and very loud, youn noisy people that had no manners with their phones constantly going off and their very loud conversations, even though they were seated next to each.
Even with this noise the food was very well and would visit again. However if a group like the one that was there returns, we will leave. This resturant does not deserve that type of distraction.

European restaurant in Houston
Such outstanding food and service! Beautiful European looking restaurant. It's always difficult to decide on our selections since the choices are all so good.

Fine dining with friendly service
We had a four course steak dinner just as suggested on the menu and it was magnificent. We were met by a owner as we came in and she was very friendly and accommodating. The service staff were very efficient, friendly, and unobtrusive. Each course was divine and it really made our anniversary memorable. Even a couple weeks later we still talk about our experience. We have mentioned Charivari to many of our friends and will be back.

Great European service and food
the menu has many of the traditional German and central European entrees and appetizers but prepared exceptionally well and with an original touch. The service is outstanding, excellent and non- intrusive. Great place for a quiet business or romantic dinner.

Our first time to visit and
Our first time to visit and it's a shame we haven't done so prior. A birthday and a blessing to have a quiet, well-prepared, and
attentively-served dinner. We had escargot and foie gras to start, followed by filet with green peppercorn sauce and the lamb chops. A combo sorbet dessert wrapped up the evening. Each was perfectly prepared. While we may not have dipped into the variety that this restaurant has to offer, we will on the next pass. The only slight miss was that I believe my vodka martinis seemed
watery. My partners lemon drop martinis were fine.
We learned that they are open for lunch: that may be a good way to try them the next time.

A Nice Surprise
We don't venture into the city from the 'burbs for a night out very often, so I put some effort into finding a restaurant that would be worth the drive. We were not disappointed. The atmosphere is perfect, elegant and cozy. The food was absolutely delicious and well proportioned. They have an extensive wine list - we enjoyed a Chilean red. The service was top notch as well - I think our server was one of the owners. Both she and the chef made an effort to visit every table. We almost felt like family by the time we left. We got there at 6:00 p.m. and by the time we left at 7:45, it went from nearly empty to nearly full so I'm sure a reservation would be a good idea if planning to visit for dinner. We highly recommend and plan to return.

Houston Restaurant Week WInner
This little spot was definitely the best we've had so far for this year's HRW. Their foie gras risotto is amazing. Next came a palette cleanser - lemon ginger sorbet. There was only a hit of ginger, just enough to prepare you for your entree. My steak was a little overcooked, but still retained all the moisture with a nice crisp on the outside. Desert was the best. Bacon ice cream doesn't sound appetizing, but Chari Vari's version will have you begging for more. You get the taste of vanilla and then sweetness from the candied bacon followed by a hint of saltiness once the sugar coating on the bacon wears away. The finale is a dash of spiciness combined with the tartness from the fresh berries. Definitely going back to this place.
8/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
We have dined there several times and each time has been a great experience. The menu is unique and the service is outstanding. We plan to go back.
8/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
A great night out.
On occasion, my wife and I go out on the town. Naturally, the big part of any "night out" is where we go for dinner. We have heard good things about Charivari and decided to give them a try. I must say that we had one of the best dining experiences in some time. The food and service were outstanding. We were treated like "special guests". We're certainly planning on another visit to Charivari's very soon.

A true chef
John is both the owner and the chef. He prepares every thing from scrach. It is the only truly 4 star estabishment in Houston.

Brought a friend from Dallas
Brought a friend from Dallas here wanting a nice place for lunch where we could talk. Heard this was a great place with wonderful food and quiet where you can enjoy your meal and talk without shouting over everything and everyone. And it was all of that and more, wonderful meal, had the lunch special, German specialties and it was very good, and liked 4 guys bringing the torts and cakes to the table to choose dessert, and our choices were great, peach cobbler and raspberry gingerbread.
We will be back again and again, got great service, spoke at length with the owner and loved the location near downtown, but not in it, without requiring a valet at lunchtime.
8/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
they've launched a lunch. Excellen
Changing lunch specials that are a real bargain as a/well as regular menu. Chicken and hanger steak selections were tender, succulent and thoroughly enjoyable. Main course tofu salad(not a special) was novel and tasty.
8/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
This restaurant was great, very accommodating with my two year old, the food was great, you don't feel rushed, everything we eat was delicious, we will definitely go back and will recommend it.
8/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
Impeccable flavors and presentation
Don't be swayed by the exterior strip mall box this restaurant is located in nor the absence of sufficient close by parking. Once you step inside you enter into another world. Choosing to select the Houston Restaurant Week special, giving a portion of the proceeds to the Houston Food Bank, I was not disappointed. A $45 mushroom focused gastronomic delight ensued, each course presented as though created by an artist and taste so wonderful that I savored each morsel. This is a unique gem on the Houston restaurant scene.

Great European Restaurant
Great food with time to enjoy the evening. Many web reviews of this place indicate slow service. It's not slow service, it's that they make an evening out of a meal. The restaurant gives you time to enjoy your food and conversation with your guests. This is typical of Europe. We had a very enjoyable evening.
8/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
Another PERFECT evening!!
We have been going to Charivari's for years. We have NEVER had an off night - dinner was amazing as always.
8/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
A safe bet
Forget about showoff, forget about fancy valet parking and a glittering façade, this is a RESTAURANT. A place where you bring friends to enjoy food. Good one. And it has this real European touch, i.e. you can linger if you wish. It is about pleasure, nothing more, nothing less.

Best Birrhday Dinner
WE went for Houston Restaurant Month and my birthday, but the regular menu was so tempting, I went with it. I especially love the old world charm and the low noise level so often missing in my experience at other Houston fine diners. Kudos to the owners and staff!
8/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
This was our second visit
This was our second visit and it in many ways mirrored our first. This time we had a guest.
The food is absolutely outstanding and the little touches like the complimentary appetizer and palate cleanser are nice extras.
We still have had trouble getting that first acknowledgment/drink after seating. We waited better than 10 minutes this time.
And they really have a problem concocting a cocktail. This time we sent the first round back: only God knows what they
Beyond the rough start, however, is a good and varied menu and a reasonable wine list from which to choose. If dessert is your
pleasure you'll not be disappointed by the decadence offered. If you don't believe 'chipotle' and 'chocolate' go together, think again.

Lived up to high expectations
I had been wanting to go to Charivari for some time, and the food was delicious, creative and beautifully presented. Attention to detail and prompt response to requests was notable. Service excellent. It did not disappoint!
8/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
Outstanding gastronomic experience, impeccable service (we had no wait that some reviewers have described). Chef-owner and his wife came by and were engaging and very pleasant. The facade is misleading as is the name- this is one of the very best restaurants in Houston.
9/4/2013 5:00:00 PM
lovely birthday lunch
We enjoyed a lovely lunch for our mother's birthday. Booking was easy through Open Table. Staff was very friendly, especially our waiter and Maria, who is I believe the owner - and it was also her birthday! Food was delicious - we did the lunch specials and for my mother's dessert, they placed a candle and of course sang for her birthday - very thoughtful. We enjoyed our lunch experience so much that time flew by and they didn't say anything when we accidentally ended up staying an hour past their closing time! We felt so bad, but they were so kind about it. Great restaurant - would definitely go back again especially for a nice occasion.

Good Solid Restaurant
The food was good, well executed, well presented what would be expected from a good solid restaurant. Make sure you have time to do this restaurant justice, the food is obviously prepared while you wait and it shows in the quality. Portion size is smallish but typical of european style restaurants.
Cautionary note Make sure you use the complimentary valet parking street parking is not available and you may get your vehicle towed.

Dinner at Charvari
Lovely ambiance, good food and wine. We enjoyed the evening. Food presentation was beautiful and everything tasted good.

My boyfriend and I visited this restaurant for our 2 month anniversary. The hostess was very sweet, she complimented us on what we were wearing and she was very friendly and easy to talk to. Our waiter was very attentive and gave a great wine reccomendation! The dinner was fantastic, the steak was cookes to perfection! The asaparagus by far has been the best I have ever had in my life. The chef/owner came by to our table several times to check to see if everything was to our expectations. I will defintely be coming back to Charivari! Absolutely delightful!!!!
9/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
I love charivari
I am almost never disappointed here. this was a wine dinner with an excellent menu, copious wine and great service and information. The wines were very good.and obtainable locally at a reasonable price. The food was delicious.
9/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
For excellent food, service from the owner, and blessed quiet fine dining this is the place. Do not be in a hurry here. This is a place for slowly savoring both the food and the atmosphere.

Europe in Midtown
It's always a pleasure. Just remember that your hosts allow you to linger, and you need to ask for your check. Great for a business lunch. The lunch special also worked for a ladies' lunch. One of my frequent recommendations.

I have been to Charivari many
I have been to Charivari many times and will return again. The food and the ambiance remind me of many restaurants I have enjoyed when I have traveled in Europe.

Good Meal - Euro Service
Food was great. Comments about slow service are ignorant. European-style dining are meant to be leisurely. Timing was perfect for a comfortable meal and piano lent a nice ambiance. Wine is reasonably priced and pre-fixe menu is worthwhile.
10/4/2013 5:00:00 PM
Nice place for a quiet dinner
We had a fixed price steak meal. It was excellent. The service was a little spotty but otherwise a great evening.
10/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
This restaurant is wonderful we highly enjoyed the food, service, and environment. The owner Maria is amazing. She took wonderful care of us! I recommend trying this place. My husband is from Europe and we have had a hard time finding a nice place with European dishes and we have finally found our place!
10/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
Consistently great European
Consistently great European food with great friendly service at reasonable prices. The normal menu is great and frequently there are special menus such as Oktobertfest or Hungarian and dishes that span Europe from Germany to Romania and places in between. The deserts are homemade and very delicious.
10/20/2013 5:00:00 PM
Able to sustain a conversation in an elegant setting with wonderful food and wine!!

Wonderful food & Excellent Service
This was my first time to eat here, but I wanted to try something new and have some German food. Wow--great choice! I felt that I had been invited into someone's formal dining room at their home. Such warm and inviting mannerisms from the staff, helped make us feel that we werent just eating but experiencing a meal. Excellent quality and delicious food! Great assistance with our wine selection. I am so happy to have found this neighborhood treasure!

A Touch of Class in Houston
If you need high energy, loud music and rushed service, go someplace else. If you want a European experience of slow dining, white tablecloths, entrees brought in covered dishes by a team of servers, quiet ambience with classical music, special touches and a chef that checks on your satisfaction, try Charivari's. They did offer a nice prix fixe lunch but we opted for the salmon/shrimp/tomato basil fettuccine entrée and I had the mushroom, arugula risotto. The salmon dish was outstanding. The risotto taste was very good - needed a bit more creaminess. We had some lovely seven layer torte with chocolate ganache for the dessert but all of the dessert are European style loveliness.
A must try for the discriminating foodie.

Excellent food and service
Great food. Excellent staff. Both times I have eaten here the food has been excellent. After trying the deserts, twice, would choose to skip those. Will definitely go again. The staff was wonderful both times. One of best restaurants in 20 years.

Secret no longer
We had a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner at Charivari. We were pleased to see so many others enjoying it, too. It was rather quiet last Thanksgiving, but busy this year — the secret is out and that's a good thing.
The European/Continental food here is delicious. On our initial visits, we ordered familiar-sounding items, which proved excellent, and became increasingly willing to try things that sounded "a little different" for us, gaining confidence that everything coming out of their kitchen is tasty and beautiful, while enjoying the chance to get educated a bit in the process.
The service is caring, personable, and first rate, including handling some special requests for our Thanksgiving meal with smiles and class. Highly recommended!
11/27/2013 4:00:00 PM
great dining experience
From the beginning to the end the experience was great. We had excellent service and the food was fresh, nicely served and of excellent taste. Everything from the apetizer to desserts were first class.
This is a great place for European cusine. Prices are reasonable for the quality.

German Owner and Chef
Having worked on many projects in Germany, this was like going home! Marie, the co-owner and wife of the chef, was delightful. Although it is a one hour drive for us, we plan on returning from time to time. In my opinion, the portions were great and you did not need a garbage bag for leftovers. We knew in advance that the gratuity was included in the bill but it was the same as we would have paid anyhow.
