Excellent restaurant, and
Excellent restaurant, and probably much less well-known than it should be.

Booked a first time reservation
Booked a first time reservation on a Monday night, and had no problems getting seated as there were only two other tables in the restaurant (it WAS Monday.) Service was knowledgeable and efficient, and the food was delicious from the first course to the last. I will definitely be back!

Over several visits the past
Over several visits the past few months, we have been very impressed with the menu, the quality of the food, and the presentation of the dishes. This is an excellent restaurant, not really known to many. Everyone should try it!!

This was one of the best dining experiences I've ever had. It helped that the snow seemed to keep others away, so we had our half of the restaurant to ourselves. But the food was also fantastic (not to mention organic and locally grown). And the service was exactly right.

Love, love, love Blue Bird
Love, love, love Blue Bird Bistro. We came for brunch on Easter Sunday and we all loved our meals. It's not the first time we have been here, and each time has always been wonderful.

First time I had been there.
First time I had been there. Very good. Learned about it through St. Elizabeth's School Auction. Very nice. Hidden spot at least for me but fun to discover!

Unique Rest; Unexpected Location
I love the bohemian feel of this casual restaurant that was once a home. There are several different seating areas on both the upper and lower levels, quiet enough for private conversation. We were there for Sunday brunch. I loved the unusual addition of fresh/healthy ingredients to traditional menu items. I had sweet potato and granola pancakes. They were good but mild on flavor and would have benefited from a little spice. The biscuits were excellent, crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. I would definitely return, next time for dinner.

Interesting menu and great food!
Fun overall atmosphere in an edgy area of downtown KC. Close to downtown events. Interesting menu with a lot of good choices. Good smaller plate selections. We experienced poor ventilation of kitchen fumes. Expect to carry the food odors with you on your clothes. All else very good!

Really enjoyed our time at the Blue Bird for dinner. Great suggestion for bottle of wine, appetizer and entrees. It was a bit pricey, but for local food it's worth it. You can taste the difference.

Good food, slow service
The food was good. It seemed we sat there a long time before giving our order & when the food came out 3 of the plates were fine, one had the wrong side item. The missing chips were quickly found & I got a bonus salad. Nice, layed-back place with good food. I wouldn't want to try to eat there if I was on a schedule, but the food was worth the wait.

We went Mother's Day. I had
We went Mother's Day. I had requested a quiet table, as hearing among the 80-somethings is an issue. Blue Bird was very accommodating, however the quietest area happened to be upstairs. Had I been aware of the climb, I would have prioritized "downstairs" instead of "quiet." Second floor is actually a flight and a half - no elevator - so be forewarned if stairs are a problem for your group. All food was great, except an egg and yam or sweet potato dish which was very undercooked (I think the order may have been turned in late). The very nice waitress took it off our bill. All in all, very nice experience, good food, and bright, cheerful, rustic, historical surroundings. Staff was great and accommodated us as best they could. A-

Great weekend lunch spot
We were seated fast. Had their pizza and it was delicious and had a healthy dose of kale. It was a lovely light lunch.

Always good for brunch
We have go to Blue Bird for brunch several times. Every time it has been consistently fresh and good no matter what you get on their ever changing menu.

Great Food but a little slow.
We love the Blue Bird. However, the last few times it seems the wait for food after ordering has been lengthy. Just some constructive criticsm.

DON"T you are
This is probably my 6th visit to Blue Bird since April 2013 and all I can say is "yessss!!!" Some of the best meals I have had in my life. I live in New York and Blue Bird beats out most of my Manhattan favorites in this farm to table genre .
Blue Bird really gets farm-to-table-- I had a spinach salad (New Zealand spinach) with heirloom cherry tomatoes, onions, and sockeye salmon. It's all in the BEST ingredients and the imagination of Matt the chef (forgot his last name) who gets the gold star. Simple delicious fare starts out with the best ingredients and a deft chef -- and that is Blue Bird. Try everything. The catfish. Veg medley. The trout. The smoked chicken ! every day is a different delight! Yes, Blue Bird is THAT good!

The food was so delicious
The food was so delicious that the three of us shared our meals - salmon, steak and risotto. We loved all of them - they were fresh and the preparation was beautiful.
The wait staff were friendly and funny - with exactly the right amount of time at our table.
We had a lovely evening.

first timer.....but coming back
My wife and I loved this place due to the good service and very good food. We recently started dieting and we were able to find great food here with fulfilling portions, not to mention extremely healthy.

Our Intro Brunch at the Blue Bird
A friend gave us a gift certificate to use after we moved to KC. We had brunch upstairs -- arriving just after 27 bicyclists had occupied downstairs. This slowed down the service, but the view from our table was interesting, and the other family in the room was entertaining. We were able to get acquainted and visit and help corral two small children until their food came. Since we were in no hurry, there was not a problem, but the little ones had a hard time waiting.
The food was outstanding -- even for one on a gluten-free diet -- and a good value for the money. The Pork/Blackberry Bowl was out of sight!
Topping off the experience was a walk around the neighborhood -- what a visual feast of architecture! A treasure for KC.

A Gem in Downtown KC
Wonderful all-organic food selections in a hip-trendy oasis near the downtown area.

Great little spot!!
This place is a find! Nestled in a neighborhood overlooking the art district, it is a bit hard to find, but even harder to forget! Only after eating here can one truly understand the beauty of eating fresh food. I really hope we can make this a regular stop whenever we are through Kansas City.

Blue Bird Sings!
The Bistro's food was notable and delicious! Everyone in my party of 4 had a clean plate!

A great destination restaurant
Blue Bird continues to be a wonderful spot for lunch. The menu was varied and now you can get breakfast all day. Huge windows let in light so it is cheery even on a dreary day. Will have to try dinner. Parking is more of a challenge as additional restaurants open in the neighborhood.
9/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
I was looking for a new place to take my wife to Sunday brunch and happened upon Blue Bird Bistro online and liked the menu. I made reservations with Open Table that morning and headed down to the Blue Bird. We loved the area and found the restaurant to be charming inside. We were seated almost as soon as we came in. Our waiter was great, took our food and drink orders with all out changes and got everything right. We loved the food and service and will certainly be back.

We've been visiting the Blue Bird when we're in KC for many years, and it seems to be getting better and better. Love it!

Great for any occasion
This was my first time dining at Blue Bird Bistro, and from the moment we stepped in the door, I had a feeling our experience was going to be a good one. The lighting was dim, the music was calming, and the decor was inviting and relaxing. One can tell that the owners put thought into every last detail of the space, right down to the small, varying decorations on each table. The staff was able to answer any question we could come up with, whether it was about the menu (which changes daily, based on what local ingredients are available) or things to do in the area. The menu seems great for any appetite or budget - entrees varied from $9-30. Overall, it was a great experience.

From comfort food to haute cuisine!
We dined with our neighbors, who had been here for breakfast or brunch and loved it, and dinner did not disappoint! I was aiming for trout, but ended up having meatloaf, which was marvelous. Portions are extremely generous - I didn't leave hungry! Others in our party had bison burger, ratatouille, chicken, all superb. Finished with homemade chocolate ice cream - yum - and a lime-tequila sorbet that was extremely tart at first but mellowed a bit - a perfect palate cleanser. Friendly, attentive and knowledgeable service - all in all a very pleasant evening!

Yay Local-Organic Food!!!
We enjoyed our lunch here very much. Great neighborhood scene and atmosphere. We had the Blueberry Pancakes, Classic Benedict and Breakfast Pizza. All of it was amazing. The wheat blueberry pancakes, so fluffy with juicy berries. Loved the fresh toasted biscuit in the Benedict, some thought the hollandaise was too tart but I liked it - very creamy and fresh. My only complaint is the sunny-side eggs that we had on the side and on top of pizza had a crunchy brown edge that makes the edge inedible IMHO. Loved all the fresh ingredients on the pizza and the handmade crust... so, so good. Pizza is enough for two people. Fresh squeezed orange juice - perfection. Great all around!

Lawrence is an asset to Blue Bird
Lawrence was our waiter, and he made us feel like old friends. His recommendations on the menu were dead-on, and he didn't make you feel like he was fishing for tips. Just really felt like he likes his job and the people he works around (us, the customer). We'll be back. Partly because of the food and the ambience, etc. But mainly because the service was extraordinary.

Blue Bird Bistro Never Let's Down!
What a neat little restaraunt. Entire staff is friendly, the owner is usually on site to greet you. The food has always been very good. So good in fact that we drive two hours one-way to enjoy this place.
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
The food was wonderful and the service great. My friends and I hadn't seen each other in a long time and the staff was attentive when needed but left us alone so we could talk. It was great. The food there is wonderful. I had the Stuffed Butternut Squash. I would come back just for that.

Anniversaries, Birthdays and Brunch
Friendly wait staff and a creatively satisfying menu proves to be a winning combination w/ Blue Bird. I love their assortment of different 'Benedict' offerings (bison, trout, meatloaf, etc.) and even a nice sweet and savory option (the trio?) where I get to have the best of both epicurean worlds on one plate. Their coffee is hearty without feeling like a fur coat on my tongue. The general atmosphere has a nice patina of 'active energy' that coincides nicely with both the 'romantic couple' and the 'growing family' crowds.
If you still have room at the end of your meal, their dessert menu is worth an extra peek.
