of regional German, Austrian, Hungarian cuisine West to East along Danube River. Excellent food, beautifully prepared, very good, friendly service. Be aware space can be tight and tables are so close in some areas of this small restaurant that you can touch your neighbors. Nevertheless a favorite spot to return to when in Portland.

spring menu was yummy
first time with the spring menu.
the dumplings from the small plates list make me want to go back right now
The coq au riesling was also excellent - much less sweet than i feared, just delicate hints of wine -and the morels were perfect chicken

Incredible food; excellent service
In spare, cleanly modern surroundings, Gruner's German-inspired nouvelle cuisine, excellent waitstaff, thoughtfully chosen beers & wines, and imaginative cocktails made our dinner perfect. Don't miss the pickled deviled eggs!

Great dinner with good friends. The spring onion English pea soup was superb, Alsatian "pizza" just right for a light dinner, and the rhubarb ice cream was a perfect ending. My husband loved his bratwurst and saucisson dinner. Service couldn't have been better. We'll go back with more friends.

There were so many great choices
There were so many great choices on the menu we ended up ordering a little bit of everything. Schnitzle, which they're known for is of course fantastic. The ricotta and kale dumplings were my favorite! We're looking forward to returning!

The wine list, featuring mostly German and Austrian wines, offers an unusual opportunity to try wines generally unfamiliar to us all.

Such a cool find.. Amazing food and great service. Second time there and will definitely be back!! Thanks Gruner!

Great night out
My wife and I went to Gruner for our anniversary and thoroughly enjoyed our dinner there. The food was excellent and the service was outstanding. It was our first time at Gruner but will not be our last.

Second time around
My first time was a few years back and I enjoyed it, but the neighborhood in the intervening years has grown up and evolved and the back bar (Kask) was a fantastic addition. Food was flavorful - the trout was amazing, light and just dissolved with a few bites. Will be back to Gruner and to the other establishments on SW 12th St.

First restaurant in Portland
I saw this advertised in a hotel magazine (which I do not always trust) but when 4 out of 4 bartenders recommend it I have it a try. For wine I had Swedish Pino which was fantastic. Oysters were my favorite. The texture was almost creamy not a speck of sand in it. The pretzel bread I could not get enough of but Ive always had love affair with it. My main dish was the trout cleanly presented, mild, and tasty. Give it a go I loved the lighting inside but they need to re-think those wooden chairs not to comfy glad I sat in the booth side.

We went to Gruners for my husband's birthday. I had a great house-made lemon soda. The beet-pickled deviled eggs were good; the butter poached oysters were only so-so. He had a plate full of meats and sauerkraut, which was very rich (couldn't finish). I had the spaetzle with cheese and ham. It didn't taste at all like my aunt's spaetzle so I was, of course, disappointed. This probably means that I should have ordered something that I've never had before because I'm sure it tasted like someone else's family spaetzle! The dessert was a wonderful rhubarb cake and rhubarb ice cream. The wait staff was excellent.

All Grüner, All the Time
You know when you out to dinner and you have such a great experience you still have a bit of a buzz high from it a couple of days later? That is what happened after eating at Grüner. There was a group of 5 of us and we all had the best time. The decor, ambiance, service, food, wine...just everything is great about this place. Can't wait to go back again.

Delightful Early Dinner Spot
A great place to eat before a downtown show. Incredible wine list, we had a red blend with valpochella that was very good the ricotta dumplings are not to be missed, salads and entrees area the enough to share ( we had the house salad and the trout, scrumptious!), fresh French Pea Soup was very tasty. The service was very friendly and knowledgable. The early evening sunlight streaming through the windows created the perfect ambiance.

So delicious. Was very impressed with the bratwurst and sauerkraut!

Truly gourmet German cuisine.
Don't think for a minute that Bratwurst are relegated to ball parks and sport bar menus. Gruner serves them up in a way that you may have never imagined possible.
Also, the Foie Gras is a MUST-ORDER! So rich and creamy and served with pickled rhubarb - such an amazing flavor/texture combination. Absolutely fantastic.

When in Portland recently, my wife and I dined one evening at Gruner. The restuarant is very minimal and contemporary. The menu is seasonal and my guess would be that the winter months are more hearty than the summer selections, as should be. The small plates were the most interesting; the entrees were very good but not very creative. We did enjoy sampling wines in a "flight," something rarely encountered in restaurants (at least the ones we go to). Overall, we enjoyed it but it wasn't as much fun as our previous evening when we dined at Andina.
7/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
The atmosphere was modern yet warm and inviting, the service was great and the food was excellent!

First time, won't be my last
Great food and service. Creative presentation, knowledgeable waitstaff. Good pace-nothing rushed, did not wait too long for courses.
7/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
This is one of my favorite restaurants in Portland and that's saying a lot since Portland is full of really great spots. I'm sure the rest of the menu is fantastic as well but my go to here is the burger in the bar area only. Even the mushroom burger is great. The service is friendly and spot on. Drinks are creative, interesting and delicious.

Tasty and beautifully presented
Excellent and fresh choices across the board. Beautiful plates and portioned correctly. Inventive and accurate wine list of well matched choices mostly from the "motherland"

Delicious and unusual menu
Food-centric friends who come to town have already read about Gruner and suggest they would like to go here. Others might be doubtful when I announce it is "sort of German" food, but all are amazed and very pleased with their meals. Not only is the food well prepared and nicely portioned, but they are surprisingly light and with subtle tastes and textures. Cocktails are well made and generous. Our table of four enjoyed shared snacks (two orders of the polenta croquettes with raclette cheese), then appetizers of foie gras and the zucchini-ricotta dumplings and moved on to trout, choucroute and duck breast schnitzel. Eveything was prepared perfectly and served with perfect timing. This would be a lovely meal anywhere.

#1 German restaurant in America!
Our business partners from Germany came to Portland and remarked that Gruner is the #1 German restaurant in America! That's all the recommendation I need...! Delicious food, great beer selection, excellent atmosphere. My only complaint is that it gets a little loud inside, but everything else makes up for that.

best dining experience ever
We've lived in Portland a long time and go out to eat a lot. Portland is full of great restaurants so to say this is the best dining experience ever is saying a lot. The food could not be better -- intriguing menu but not one where you need a dictionary to translate, perfect size portions, and unbelievably, unbelievably tasty. Every course we had (and we had several of them) was divine. The service was exceptional also, friendly, attentive and unobtrusive wait staff, professional in a way you don't often find in Portland. We are in love with this restaurant.
7/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
We had a lovely meal here this week. Excellent food. Wonderful flavors. Different menu than most restaurants, which was a wonderful reprieve. Great recipes from Austria, Germany, France, and Switzerland. Wine list to accompany. My dad is older and has hearing loss and was fine here, even though the floors are shiny wood. Highly recommend!

Awesome all around
What delicious food with sincere and excellent service. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the food and drinks we ordered and took great care of us. Everything from the salad through to the desert was amazing.

Modern German Cuisine
My partner and I both found the food and service outstanding at Gruner. We both enjoyed the classic German ingredients prepared in an updated, lighter fashion. Very fresh ingredients, thoughtfully assembled.
8/20/2013 5:00:00 PM
The air conditioning nearly drove us to an outside table but when we talked to the server, the temperature was immediately adjusted. Great customer service. I'm a diner who doesn't appreciate an 'energetic' noise level so I always hope for a more peaceful dining scene. This wasn't as loud as some places but not as peaceful as I like.
8/22/2013 5:00:00 PM

Had the deviled eggs, peach salad, and mixed grill -- all were amazing. Wine list isn't as difficult to navigate as it looks. Professional service, too!

Great Germanic food
Everything my wife and I had, from the appetizer and house bread, to beverages, to entrees and dessert was tasty and of high quality. We highly recommend!

Becoming my favorite restaurant!
Whether we sit in the bar to order a burger, beer, and the Gruner salad or step it up to sit in the main restaurant, the food is consistently outstanding. Great variety and seasonal changes. Among so many stand-out restaurants in Portland, Gruner has risen to the top of my list for any occasion!
9/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
I loved the schnitzel. I'm an Austrian French girl and this menu was awesome. It was a real treat to enjoy some unique cuisine In a cool neighbourhood. Thankyou. And I'm still laughing that I asked for a half order but managed to scarf down the entire full order!
9/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food was great, I enjoy this place. The problem was that we had a reservation but it took over an hour after our reservation time to be seated - by they we were overly hungry.

My friend and I had an awesome
My friend and I had an awesome time at Gruner! The waiter we had was very courteous and his recommendations for drinks to get were very helpful. This wasn't our first time at Gruner, but we were impressed again by the quality of food and friendliness of staff.

We went to Grüner as a group
We went to Grüner as a group of 8, and it was fantastic! The service was great, they easily split our bill, food was amazing, and we were able to split multiple appetisers and a few entrees, ordered four bottles of wine and the bill still came to $35 per person. I want to go back with my hubby for a romantic dinner!

We used Gruner for a business
We used Gruner for a business gathering of 12 and used The Glacier Room for privacy and to make it a special occassio. We were able to work with the restaraunt to design our menu ahead of time. The service and wine assistance was great and was the food. It was an excellent event and we could not have made a better choice.
9/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food and service
Table for seven set in back, almost private area near kitchen. Nice in a way but also a bit removed from the action. Would rather have sat in the main room,. Food and service was terrific. Enjoyed the night. Wouldn't hesitate to return. The croquettes, which were provided on the house, were fantastic. Also memorable was the beet appetizer, and the drink at KASK while we waiting the half hour for our table (which was not quite ready).

Gruner's creative, delicious food
Every dish at Gruner is unique and prepared with care. The pretzel bread and seed bread brought to the table to start are made in house and are wonderful. The Gruner salad has a variety of wonderful flavors and textures, and it's the smoothest vinegar dressing we've ever tasted. The menu has something for everyone in their "Alsatian" oriented cuisine -- from trout to noodles to sausage -- each dish is served with unique complimentary sauces and elements, and it's not your typical German cuisine. The staff are very helpful and can recommend one of the excellent wines. The bartender creates deliciously creative unique cocktails, and there is always something new to try. Round off the meal with the delicious cheese plate or dessert.

We had not been aware of Gruner's
We had not been aware of Gruner's until we received a Fandango gift certificate from our daughter and chose to use it at Gruner's because of the German theme. We were not disappointed. The wine, beer and faire were all great choices for a European evening. To top it off we ordered Rudesheim coffees and they were just as delicious as the ones we have had in Germany. Adam our waiter was very knowledgeable about all aspects of the menu as far as interesting tidbits about the beers and food we ordered. An all around enjoyable evening, and we will go back.
10/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
Overall, the best service
Overall, the best service we had while in Portland--the dishes we ordered to share were coursed and paced well. Gruner has a fun cocktail and wine list, and our server was very knowledgeable about both food and drink.
Charcuterie plate was great as was the endive salad. The beet dumplings were also very good, but could've benefited from a touch more salt.

Gruner is lovely. It's pretty
Gruner is lovely. It's pretty hard to find that type of food outside of Germany or atleast Europe so it's nice to find it in Portland. The sausages are excellent. The main portions are rather large, just something to keep in mind.
10/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
For some reason, I'd put off going to Gruner, though many had told me how good it was. I thought I didn't like German food...probably from past experiences of overly heavy, cream laden dishes. Gruner has an excellent variety of things from small plates to larger entrees and everything I've had the 3 times I've been there have been spot on. I also really liked the servers who are casual, friendly and extremely professional. The food is also not overly expensive and good value for the dollar, including their happy hour. I would highly recommend this restaurant.
10/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
Noisy and a little slow, but good!
My wife and I, her besty and parents really enjoyed out dinner, it was really noisy and hard to interact. We were seated at the table in the back and it was hard at times to get out server to give us some attention. But when the food came, it was amazing!! Worth the wait. Just wish the wait was a little more comfortable.
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
Dined there on a Friday night with my fiancé. Fantastic food and service with an extensive drink menu as well. I would definitely go back! The house made bratwurst and trout dish were amazing!
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
not your typical German restaurant
I had dinner at Gruener's last weekend. Very fun atmosphere. Very fun cocktails. . Hacker Pschorr on tap! Great German and Austrian wines.
Loved the Maultaschen. Homemade sausages. Looking forward to going back and explore the menu further.

gourmet comfort food
Preperations are consistently good, creative. (Who knew you could put chestnuts in salad and it would taste so good.) Wines are often unfamiliar(to me) and servers are quite knowledgable. One of my favs.
11/5/2013 4:00:00 PM
I could not recommend this restaurant more highly. Not one complaint.
Not the place for you if you want a quiet dinner for two but the food, the service and the energy all made an evening to remember.
11/7/2013 4:00:00 PM
Last week, I had dinner at Gruner with three friends. We had a great time - the food was excellent and so was the service. It was my first dinner there - I'd been for lunch 2 times. They were great too!
I will definitely return and suggest it to others!

Nailed Every Course
We started with cocktails, both were very inventive and delicious. We then had the deviled eggs - yes - they were superb, particularly with the dusting of horseradish. Next were salads. The radish & greens were dressed very well and the kale salad was delicious with the right amount of starch for mouthfeel. For the main course, I had the sausages and my spouse had the trout. Both were really delicious. We finished with the berliners, which is the perfect sized dessert after that meal. Amazing. Through the entire evening, the server was magnificent. It was a great experience.
