Small and Fresh
While the seating at Akiko's may be limited, the freshness of the sushi is on point. Definitely try the Hawaiian butter fish - it was so silky and light. There is a large selection of specialty rolls, but there seem to be many redundancies in them. However, if you persevere, you should be able to find a few different ones. And, don't miss the cabbage salad/slaw!

If you like sashimi, this is one of the better spots in the bay area. It's not cheap...but quality never is. Yum!

Best sushi I've had in USA and CAD
Chef's choice Omakase was superlative. Just asked them to bring us delicious things, and they obliged.

Very good sushi
The sushi was very good, and the staff was very helpful. The restaurant also has a nice lively vibe to it. If I am ever in the area again, I would definitely go back.

We were in SF for 3 days and ate here twice because the quality of the sushi and service was that outstanding!

Rivals Tokyo sushi house
I visited Tokyo last year and had the most incredibly fresh sushi you could possibly imagine. I never thought I would find a sushi house that rivaled that freshness and "melt in your mouth" taste. I was wrong. This place serves incredible sashimi/sushi (Toro!!!!!). Love every bite. Rolls are great. Try the seaweed salad too. I always take my clients here if I want to impress them.

Best. Sushi. Ever.
This tiny, hidden, unassuming gem is truly amazing. You WILL walk right by it, there is no signage on the front of the restaurant and it's a very small place. While seated immediately, the service was slow to start. Be patient! Once our waiter finally greeted us, he was amazingly informed, charming, and did a terrific job. We were seated originally at a small table near the front and while it wasn't a bad spot, a few minutes after being seated we were moved by our waiter to the best table in the house (private corner spot that opened after our arrival) with no prompting by us. That made our dining experience all the more memorable. We've eaten a lot of sushi at places like Nobu and this beat it. It was literally the best we've ever had.

Sushi with No Name
There is no sign on the building at Akiko, but the sushi is excellent, with some special fish that you will no find elsewhere. Their other Japanese cuisine is also excellent, such as tempura and fried calamari.
7/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
The restaurant is a bit hard to find (there is no sign outside the door) but the search was worth it! Very fresh sushi with unique spice combinations. Loved the 49er roll especially--the lemon on top gives a lovely burst of freshness that enhances the other flavors in theroll. Highly recommend it, but the place is a bit small so difficult for large groups. Service was excellent and gave great recommendations.

One of the best sushi and
One of the best sushi and sashimi bars we have been to. Really good and fresh fish served in an authentic style. Service could definitely be friendlier!

Great quality food
The sushi here are real fresh, as if it came straight from the Tokyo fish market. Had the sashimi sampler and that was delicious, but I didn't appreciate getting a triangular piece of salmon (the ends of a fish) it was way too thick and couldn't really enjoy the fish as much as you would normally with a perfectly cut sashimi. We also had the uni (st Barbara). we normally get ours from Maine. Had the tiger shrimp (Raw) sushi, was a bit over marinated but enough for us to be satisfied. Overall I think this place is great for food tasting, I wouldn't really get full from this as I come from NYC and our sushi are much more affordable but lack the quality of this restaurant. Staff were somewhat helpful but (San Francisco) friendly.
7/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
Akikos is a nice quaint little sushi place. They have excellent food, and a great menu. Since they've re opened it's a little harder to find because they took the sign down. the food is little pricey but not too bad for a sushi place. however it's the service is where lacking. The upside is that the hostess sat us promptly, but after that we had to ask to see where our waiter was. it had been 15 minutes and he was nowhere to be found. go for the food but expect mediocre service.

Best sushi in town
I am very picky with sushi restaurant and I can't say enough good things about the food quality at akiko's. Definitely the best sushi place in town.
7/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Amazing salmon, ikura, tuna, hamachi, hotate! Everything is great here. Just come for the fish. You're missing out if you order anything else.

Super fresh yummy sushi
Visiting San Fran from NYC. Found this restaurant on Yelp. Walked 20 minutes from Hotel and they had no openings. We made a reservation the following night and had to wait 15 minutes for our table, the hostess was very apologetic but being from NYC we were used to waiting even longer with reservations. The owner bought over comp seaweed salad which was fabulous, the best I've had. Even my 14 year old loved it. By far the best food we had in San Fran.

Hard to find but worth it
Akikio's is hard to find (no sign outside other than street number) but well worth it. Great nigiri and sashimi choices along with a wide selection of other Japanese favorities. Even had a good selection of Japanese beers (including Orion from Okinawa).
8/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
Good but hard to find
There's no sign out side, but the door is right under the Irish Bank sign.

Go for the belly
The salmon belly is amazing.
The chu-toro is amazing.
The wagyu is amazing.
We had nigiri omakase. Several courses of nigiri sushi, no sashimi. And we had an enjoyable night out. We got there especially early and it was not especially busy. The restaurant fills up quickly, but by then we were halfway through our courses and getting full.
I can't wait to go back.

quality sushi downtown
I'm always on the lookout for great sushi but Akiko's is not really obviously a sushi place from the outside. My friend and I were running late so for our reservation so I had called ahead and the staff was understanding and accommodating, which I appreciate because this place was packed for early in the evening. So the service was great in general, but most importantly, the fish was SO GOOD. Fresh, flavorful, and there was a great selection of fish as well as warm dishes. My friend and I ordered a few salads and a sashimi platter and were floored at how delicious everything was. Definitely a must-try if you are serious about sushi and need a great restaurant for after work.

Best sushi and sashimi in the Bay
The is hands down the best fish I've ever had. This place is great. The only thing I would recommend is that the restaurant get a better wait staff or proper training. They need to be more attentive and out going.
8/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
The tempura batter I found a bit too Heavy & thick, not light and crispy as I prefer. The produce and fish they use are very fresh, however, there is a bitter lemon sause on the sushi that I really didn't like which kind of ruined the experience for me. My partner didn't mind it though!
9/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
Best sushi ever!
This is probably the best sushi that I have ever eaten. I cannot wait to come back to try their Omakase.
9/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
Trendy sushi with friendly attitude
We found Akiko after searching online. Very happy with the meal. Carefully prepared fresh sushi and other dishes. The hostess and servers were great., attentive services. Moderate bill was the happy surprise at the end. If we lived here in SFO we would be back for sure.

When I need a treat
I love to eat here. The food is terrific and the service is great. Im on a quest to try everything on the menu. I'm lucky this place is just a block away.

the food is amazing; hands down the best sushi I've ever eaten...the service is on par with the food; attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly.
9/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Truly enjoyed the dining experience. Only drawback - reservation was 9:00 and a number of items were sold out. Since it's a relatively small place and been in business for some time, I would think the chef has a better handle on amounts to order; particularly the more popular selections. Overall experience was very good.

The Sushi was Outstanding
The sushi really was amazing. This is a friendly but no no nonsense place. You won't find soy sauce out and each piece comes complete with what you will need to enjoy it. We had the Omakase menu and I cannot recall having had much better anywhere. We sat at the bar and chatted with the chef who was very friendly as time permitted. The toro was great. Maybe the best in the bay area.
10/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
Oh my, omakase
Dinner was great. We each had about 15 pieces with some sake and the bill was a little over $200 before tip. Some of the specialty items like the Nama Ebi, Kuro Maguro (Akami), Kanpachi (Japan), and of course, the A5 Wagyu offering, were expected standouts, but the care and presentation put into all of the items served made it a very memorable meal. Ray, our server, offered simple explanations of the food and expanded on anything we wanted to know more about. It was a great experience and I can't wait to go again.

Great little spot
Really enjoyed the ambience and the amazing sushi at this spot. The sushi was high quality and was made with care Quite different than that everyday sushi spot you are used to. Visit here and you won't be disappointed.

Finally a great Omakase in SF!
I live in both Los Angeles and San Francisco and am amazed at the selection of great sushi/omakase restaurants in Los Angeles, but have been surprised that with the strong Asian community that there isn't much to choose from. This was what I've been waiting for and both my spouse and I were impressed by the prep, the presentation, the taste and and the selection of dishes offered. I'll definitely be back more often. Am thrilled to have something of this calibre in San Francisco.

Akiko's is for Sushi Lovers
This place is a treasure. The fish is fresh and diverse sourcing, the sushi chef is creative and the sushi is really, really good. I highly recommend the restaurant.

Hidden Sushi Gem
The restaurant doesn't have a name on he door, but my foodie friends from out of town had read about it being the best sushi spot in town. We let the waiter order for us and everything was superb and so fresh! $550 with gratuity for four people, we brought the wine so only corkage on top. We ate a lot of food so we can't complain, but be prepared. The last bite was heaven and we'll be dreaming about it until our next visit...hopefully soon.

The omakase menu was delightful--ev
The omakase menu was delightful--everything was perfectly prepared. Spinach-sesame salad, bitter greens and avocado, oysters and caviar, sashimi, three nigiri courses, and one lightly seared beef wrap followed by mochi ice cream. My only slight criticism is that the menu would have been improved by the addition of a hot course--a traditional pork and winter squash soup, something else brothy, or a fried dish.
10/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
I had read about this restaurant and was curious to see if it was as good as the article mentioned. It was not only as good, but better. Having worked in the sushi restaurant business many years ago, I have been on the search for as good as it gets and this comes close. The sushi/sashimi melted in our mouths with freshness and flavors that were gentle and yet strong. The broiled yellow tail collar was cooked perfectly with crispness and intense goodness. The staff was knowledgeable and friendly and always aware of our needs, answered our questions readily, but was never obtrusive. Thanks for a wonderful Union Square lunch!
10/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
We had the sunomono with octopus, grilled saba, kurodai, and some specials recommended by our server. If you're at a loss, ask the server for recommendations because they know what they're talking about. Everything was fabulous. We stayed away from the rolls because with fish that good, I think the purity of the flavor is wasted when combined with other more mundane ingredients. Definitely one of the better Japanese restaurants in SF.
10/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
Very nice place for lunch. Everything from the place settings to the service was great. I had the nabeyaki and the forty-niner roll. Really fresh, good seafood.

Spider roll- awesome

Good food and good service
I went there alone and ordered Tempura and Unagi. The quality was that of a good restaurant you could find in Japan. For some reason, the waiter had forgotten my order and I waited 30 min before they realized it. To apologize, I was offered my diner. That is what I call good service !
11/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
Every bite a delight!
We went for the omekase dinner which was a new delight with eveyr dish. Our server was most helpful in choosing sake to match the dishes and expand our sake repertoire!
11/5/2013 4:00:00 PM
I'll keep it simple - this is the best sushi that I've had in San Francisco. The options are fantastic and varied and the staff was incredibly friendly! If you are someone that loves omakase, this is the place for you!
11/12/2013 4:00:00 PM
We had a seaweed salad and 3 types of sushi rolls, all of which were very tasty! Our server was super nice and very attentive, refilled drinks in a timely manner and was very knowledgable about the menu, giving us some great recommendations!

Best Sushi Anywhere
I ate at the sushi bar, and could not have been happier with the food. I had the most pristine fish and types I've never heard of. The chefs were helpful and made good suggestions. I can't wait to go back.

A Saturday evening
My husband and I went to this sushi restaurant while visiting San Francisco the past week-end and we really enjoyed the great "omakase". Together with a half bottle of cold sake Daiginjo, everything was just perfect!!! The omakase included not only sushi and sashimi but also salads, soups and a delicious piece of meat at the end of the meal!!! I highly recommend this restaurant to any person who likes Japanese food!!
NB! Be aware that there is another sushi restaurant also with the name of Akiko not far away from Union Square. It was confusing to know which one was “the famous one”, but finally the concierge in our hotel told us to visit this one at Bush Street.
11/15/2013 4:00:00 PM
Salmon like butter!
Fish was impeccable, the sauces were delicate and delicious. Prices were reasonable for the quality of the sushi!
11/18/2013 4:00:00 PM
We had the Omakase and Alan hooked us up with one of the best meals we've ever had. The quality of fish was incredible. The husband and i can't stop talking our experience.

Wonderful find down from DragonGate
We first found this place when trying to get into the Irish Pub down the alley. The sushi was great and they had a great variety. I tried the Sake tasting and it was fabulous. Will be returning next time we are in town.
11/20/2013 4:00:00 PM
This is the way sushi/sashimi should be. The list was interesting and pristine fresh. Presentation was innovative and thoughtful. The sake and wine lists are both very good. Pair it with excellent service and we now have a new favorite. We did not get a chance to try some of the other menu offerings on this visit, but will next time. This is not a place to rush, but to enjoy each dish as it comes - I can't wait to come back!
