The Best Modern Indian Cusine
An amazing Indian dinner with by far the most attentive wait staff and management that I've experienced.
The chef has put an interesting touch to modern Indian cuisine. Amazing flavors. Appropriate levels of spice. Presentation of the meal surpasses that of many Indian and other resteraunts that I've been to.
On top of the food, the staff helped create an amazing experience. Any time we rose from the table and returned someone was there to help with the chair and place a new napkin on our lap. The management, chef and owner all visited with us in a polite way as well. We felt like we were visiting celebrities.

First-Rate Indian in Midtown
Tulsi is a real find, every bit as good as Junoon or Tamarind. The food is inventive, portions are generous, the staff is attentive, and the room is elegant. What more could a diner ask? A real addition to the neighborhood, too!

A Fun Dining Spot
This is a fun dining spot that features food that would pleasantly surprise the most sophisticated palate. Service was prompt and friendly. The mixologist was terrific. The wine list was a bit pricey for the bottles offered, but the array was varied and decent. Overall a very nice evening at a restaurant to which we will definitely return!

Our table of 3 all tried the tasting (meat) menu with wine pairing. The entire table loved the food. The food was creative and yummy. I didn't care for the red wines but I normally don't like red as much as white and am not a wine drinker to begin with. The waiter was accomodating and offered me white instead of the red after I tasted it and didn't like it. Loved the overall decor. I would definitely come back.

Tulsi has now clearly ascended
Tulsi has now clearly ascended to the top spot of Indian restaurants in Manhattan. Their service is top notch, which the first sign of their excellence. Their food follows suit and is not the rich tomato sauce laden offerings of their competitors.

Best Indian food in NYC. The variety of breads, appetizers, entrees, and desert were all one could desire. The Maitre D' was superb in his warm greeting, helpful suggestions, and attention to service.

Wonderful food served by accommodating waitstaff. Gauze curtained tables enhance the experience. Tandoor specialties excel.

Everything except dessert
I would highly recommend Tulsi. Food was delicious, service was great. But, dessert was a disappointment. The chocolate samosas did not cut it, and the nut base on the mango cheesecake just did not work. The pistachio kulfi was decent but nothing out of the ordinary. Overall though, I loved the place and would definitely go back.

Having just come back from
Having just come back from India, where are last meal in Mumbai was at a 2-Michelin star restaurant, we wanted something more upscale than the "typical" Indian restaurant: We found it in Tulsi! Everything was fantastic. The Tandori lamb appetizer was wonderful. I've never had chutneys as fresh and excellent, nor have I had pickles any better. The okra was amazing as were the curries. Chef Hemant Mathur definitely deserves his Michelin star (and another). We loved everything about Tulsi and can't wait to eat there again when we are back in NY next month.

This was one of the best, if not the best, Indian meals we have ever had. The lamb chops were, as other reviewers have mentioned, terrific, with perfect accompaniments. The spinach and corn kofta were wel-seasoned and delicious. Even the plain naan was great! Service was attentive and pleasant, and the seating was very comfortable. We had a wonderful lunch, and will return!

Great find for Indian food lovers
Unique menu and great tasting food. Must try the jackfruit biriyani.

Great Service and Very Good Food
Tulsi has some of the best Indian food in the city. Not all of the dishes are at that level, but the best ones are sublime. It is quite expensive, especially if you have drinks ($14 for a gin and tonic). The service was outstanding. The main problem with this place is the interior design. The lighting is way too white and bright, and the ceiling design is too reflective --- sound to bounces off of it and elevates the noise level considerably.

Appetizer - Crab Cakes were delicious, perfect size for good fried and crab ratio
Entrees - Parsi Halibut was excellent; Hemant’s Tandoor-Grilled Lamb Chops was so tender and juicy, perfectly marinated.
Sides - Tulsi's Dal was very tasty, complex flavours
Cocktail - Indian summer, refreshing. keep it coming!
Dessert - bread pudding, gotta try it.
Michelin 1 star.

An eclectic menu of not run-of-the-mill Indian dishes. Excellent tastes but not tge place if you want traditional masalas and vindaloos. Thoroughly enjoyable and worthwhile introduction into some fusion Indian cuisine.

outstanding in every way
there was not an item which we tasted which was not extraordinary. these folks even manage to take cauliflower to a previously unimagined level. Lamb chops are my thing and i've had them 100s of times all over the world. These may very well be the best.
I was a bit surprised that the bartender didn't seem to know how to mix a Manhattan but I can confirm that he has no trouble with a classic G&T which was a better choice for the hot summer day. A total winner.

Chef's tasting menu
We ordered the Chef's tasting menu. Be sure to come hungry. Despite small portions there are many! Service was excellent. They even brought over an extra appetizer for my daughter. Both vegetarian and non-vegetarian were very good. Would definitely recommend it!

Best Indian food I've had in a very long time--impossibly tender chicken tikka, succulent jumbo (and I mean seriously jumbo) shrimps. Really fantastic cuisine. Service is very friendly and professional. Worth a visit!

The specialty cocktail was excellent and the food was probably the best Indian food I have ever had. The only less-than-stellar dish was the dessert we shared, perhaps because it was not really an Indian dessert; it was something you might see almost anywhere. We were seated right away and our waiter was superb, friendly but not fawning and very knowledgable. I will definitely go back to this place the next time I am in NY.
7/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
This is my first time to try an Indian restauant in the city. Everything is just absoutly perfect. The food and the services are excellent. The menu is so easy to understand. It is good for romatic lunch during the busy work schedule.
7/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
Flavorful food and very nice place!
Ask the waiter/ress for suggestions, go for the speciality food or dishes that the chef suggests. The fish we had was so nice it has been a while since I could recollect such awesome culinary, the people behind this restaurant are doing a great job! I will definitely revisit in a couple of weeks.

The true "Star of India" !!!
In more than 50 years in the NY area, I have witnessed Indian restaurants proliferate from three to innumerable. My experience at Tulsi stands out as an exceptional and unexpected pleasure. Quiet, knowledgeable, friendly and helpful staff; a menu that offers diversity ; a broad range of drinks including wine and beer; and a satisfying but not excessive amount of food. It could not be further from the typical NY experience of anonymous orange dishes with inventive names but similar tastes.
The visit was an experiment, in connection with restaurant week; however, it is clearly high on a list of desirables from now on.

takes indian cuisine to a new level
the menu is different from your standard indian restaurant's, as are the actual dishes. our waiter had a strong opinion when we asked for his feedback between two choices (love that). somewhat formal environment, but the staff is so relaxed and welcoming.

This a beautiful Indian restaurant with excellent food and service. Outstanding décor -- sheer curtains separate tables, Will definitely be back. Hard to find an appealing restaurant of this quality in midtown east.

Just what we were looking for
In NYC for a week, and we wanted a nice, relaxing Indian restaurant. Found just that with great food at Tulsi. It is a step above the ordinary, with creative dishes, and attentive service. It was quite welcoming, and we will be back.

Excellent Indian Dining Experience
Having eaten at Devi, the chef's former restaurant, we were excited to try his new restaurant and we were not disappointed. The menu is so appealing, we left it up to the kitchen to send out a selection, mostly vegetarian. Everything was beautifully presented and delicious with the beguiling flavors of Indian cuisine at it's finest, the subtle layering of spices and juxtaposition of sweet, spicy, sour, salty. The service is professional and polished and the restaurant itself is beautiful, lovely and peaceful. A wonderful evening in every respect.
8/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
Beautiful, and amazing food...
Delicious food, which was flavorful with every bite.
The presentation was nothing short of was you'd expect from a michilen starred restaurant.
Was a little loud in the beginning, but that was perhaps more because of the group sitting next to us.

A hidden gem
I passed this restaurant several times and recently tried it with a business colleague. It was terrific and a good value. The food is different and delicious, and the ambiance quiet and somewhat serene for a lunch and conversation. I had the two-course prix fixe lunch of Chaat (great) and the Curried Chicken (which the waiter offered to tone down. It came out just right, not too spicy & not too bland.) My colleague had the Mango Yogurt (refreshing w/ a kick) and the Pesto Chicken which was less exotic but tasty. The service is attentive but not hovering, and our food came quickly. My colleague hosted a family birthday at the restaurant earlier in the year and said it was a big success. I plan to return and highly recommend.

The best Indian food we've
The best Indian food we've eaten outside of Mumbai! Chef Hermant Mathur is a truly accomplished chef and well deserving of Michelin stars. The tandoori dishes, breads, chutneys, raita, are all fabulous. This time we had the prawns, each the size of a lobster tail -- fresh and delicious. The biryani was like none we've ever eaten -- incredible. Vegetables are also not to be missed. Tulsi will be a regular whenever we are in New York!!!

We are so glad we found Tulsi.
We are so glad we found Tulsi. We were made welcome from the time we entered. We love Indian food and this dining experience gave us the opportunity to enjoy new flavors and presentations. Our server gave us a greater appreciation of the origins of the dishes we enjoyed. Kudos to the chef and entire staff.

Almost perfect Indian...
The food was absolutely outstanding, probably the best Indian I've ever had. I suppose it's a good sign when the restaurant is packed and we were one of the two tables occupied by non-Indians. I give it 4 stars because of service and atmosphere, but definitely go for the food!
10/17/2013 5:00:00 PM
This is absolutely the best
This is absolutely the best Indian restaurant outside of Mumbai. We've dined here several times and everything we've eaten has been spectacular. Chef Hermant Mathur is a master! The biriyani dishes are absolutely amazing. Great eggplant, okra, kebobs, raita, pickles and chutneys, as well as every main dish we have eaten at Tulsi. We've given up eating Indian food back home and just wait for our next trip to New York to dine at Tulsi.

Simply the best Indian Food
Once you step into this resturant you can tell you are in for a dining experience. The aroma of spices fill the air, and you know your in for a treat. The service is excellent, and the general manager circulates and checks at every table to see if everything is fine.
As for the food, it simply is the best. The lamb and Chicken are excellent, and they offer a Chef Choice and Wine Paring.

Superb Indian Cuisine
My girlfriend and I just happened to pick Tulsi out of numerous Indian restaurant choices offered up by the various search engines and review sites - and we couldn't have found a better restaurant, even in Manhattan. The cauliflower appetizer - not on the menu - was out of this world - caramelized, crunchy, succulent and hardly recognizable as a vegetable. The wait staff were impeccable and our waiter, Mr. Bhatt, made us feel like the only customers in the restaurant. His recommendations were fanastic - from the aforementioned cauliflower to lamb chops served with a divine plum compote and a Goan seafood curry (spicy - but also brilliant). I can't recommend this fantastic experience more!

Not your usual Indian
Tulsi was a great experience. It isn't your typical Indian restaurants with the usual Aloo Mattar and Bainghan Barthas. Instead, beginning with the spinach samosas to the Tandoori tofu, the take on Indian is very different. The entrees are paired with rice or breads or fritters as a part of the dish itsef making it therefore a complet meal in and of itself. The breads are excellent too.
11/3/2013 4:00:00 PM
Tulsi is an excellent restaurant. It well deserves its Michelin star, and we would give it two stars. One of our group thought it was among the best Indian food he'd ever eaten, alamost on a par with Bukhara in New Delhi.

The Best Indian Restaurant
Tulsi is a seemingly undiscovered gem. The quality and variety of Indian food is, I think, unmatched in the city. The service is excellent--there when you need them, with explanations of each dish, but not hovering. We had the tasting menu, and it was wonderful. It is also a vegetarian's paradise. The ambiance is serene and lovely at dinner, maybe a little more bustling at lunch.
Highly, highly recommend.

A NEIGHBORHOOD GEM!
I was visiting New York City for the Thanksgiving weekend and had to go back to Tulsi for dinner before leaving the city. I went there last March and had a great experience. I was not disappointed!! Food is outstanding and the staff is very accommodating to your requests. Some of the dishes are extremely spicy. If you like your food on the mild side they will try to modify the level of heat whenever possible.
